Added DiffLines:

* MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold: Possibly, before losing his mind. He was shown in a flashback to be perfectly willing to share his monkey meat with starving villagers, who refused out of disgust. This may have been an attempt to deliberately to unsettle others or just a shot at winning Suzu over, but given his loneliness he may really have been trying to make friends with kindness.

Added DiffLines:

* ValuesDissonance: He was ostracized by villagers for "feeding on beasts". This may seem to the moderm reader like a strange hang-up, especially in a period of famine, but at the time there were serious religious taboos to eating non-fish meat, particularly quadrupedal mammals. He even defends eating monkeys, as they are technically not four-legged.

[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:Shoukichi]]
A young Ashina peasant who serves in his village's militia.
----
* BigBrotherInstinct: Very protective of his older sister Suzu, [[spoiler:to the point of even defying his own lord in order to save her]].
* CombatPragmatist: [[spoiler:Manages to kill one of Takamine's samurai by throwing ash into his one good eye. He also saves Hanbei from Kodou Takamine by tossing a firebomb at the latter.]]
* CowardlyLion: Despite his gung-ho attitude when out of danger, he always becomes visibly nervous in an actual fight. Nonetheless, he'll still unhesitatingly hold his ground even in the face of imminent death.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Ends up dying to give Hanbei the chance to defeat Kodou Takamine.]]
* HomeGuard: Since the Ashina military has its hands full dealing with the Interior Ministry, Shoukichi and his comrades are their village's first line of defense against bandits.
* SoleSurvivor: In ''Sekiro Side Story: Hanbei the Undying'', he's sent out with two different militia patrols, and both times it's only Hanbei's intervention that saves him from dying with the rest of his comrades.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Suzu]]
The older sister of Shoukichi, Suzu is a kind single mother widowed by war.
----
* AndThenJohnWasAZombie: [[spoiler:After her abduction, she ends up being turned into a Test Subject by Doujun.]]
* DamselInDistress: [[spoiler:Is kidnapped by Takamine in order to lure out Hanbei.]]
* KillTheCutie: [[spoiler:Hanbei ends up giving her a MercyKill rather than have her live as nothing more than one of Doujun's mindless test subjects.]]
* NiceGirl: Upon finding Hanbei passed out near her village, she unhesitatingly takes him into her home to feed him despite barely having enough food to feed her own household.
* WidowWoman: Her husband was killed in the conflicts ravaging Ashina, leaving her with only her brother to help care for her young son.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Hermit]]
A former resident of Shoukichi's village who was ostracized for being a hunter who fed on meat, he eventually left the village to live alone in the nearby mountains.
----
* AbhorrentAdmirer: He expresses an interest in marrying Suzu, even after the full extent of his madness is revealed.
* AchillesHeel: Like other red-eyed beings, he fears fire.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Was pretty much the village outcast, and the monkeys never accepted him back into their ranks either (though that last part might be because he had been hunting and eating them).
* ChildOfTwoWorlds: He was raised by monkeys for part of his childhood before some villagers took him in. As such, he finds himself unable to fit in with either the village or the monkeys.
* CombatPragmatist: Despite his ferocity in a direct fight, he prefers to stealthily ambush his prey like a hunter.
* CraftedFromAnimals: Uses the pelts from the monkeys he's killed to dress himself up like one. He even wears an entire monkey head as a mask!
* DualWielding: Wields two katanas in battle.
* EscapedFromTheLab: [[spoiler:It's implied that after leaving the village, he ended up becoming one of Doujun's test subjects for sometime before managing to escape, explaining his red eyes and nigh-supernatural toughness.]]
* HisNameReallyIsBarkeep: "Hermit" is literally the name given to him by the village.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Ultimately, all he really wants is a community to belong to.
* KarmicDeath: [[spoiler:After a lifetime feeding on monkeys, he ends up being devoured by the Guardian Ape.]]
* LonersAreFreaks: Even before his social isolation drove him completely insane, he was a rather creepy guy.
* MadeOfIron: Despite not technically being immortal, he can survive being sliced and impaled multiple times without losing a single step. [[spoiler:It takes being eaten by the Guardian Ape to finally put him down for good.]]
* RaisedByWolves: Courtesy of some monkeys who took him in for part of his childhood.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Has the glowing red eyes linked in the lore to both increased vitality and decreased sanity, [[spoiler:thanks to Doujun experimenting on him]].
* SerialKiller: Has been going around killing anyone who's wandered into the mountains, with his twisted logic being that only the dead are able to share his loneliness.
* UnskilledButStrong: Though Hermit is a powerful fighter capable of cutting his way through entire groups of hardened bandits, Hanbei notes that his attacks are wild and rely entirely on brute strength.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Takamine Hirachika]]
An elderly retainer of the Ashina who fought alongside Isshin during his coup, where he earned a reputation as a mighty spearman. He is the lord of Shoukichi's and Suzu's village.
----
* AristocratsAreEvil: [[spoiler:Has been sending bandits to kidnap his own subjects for Doujun's experiments.]]
* {{BFS}}: Wielded an enormous ''omi yari'' spear.
* BigBad: [[spoiler:Is the one responsible for all the troubles faced by the village, even if he's ultimately doing it on behalf of Genichiro and Doujun.]]
* CareerEndingInjury: It's implied that he would have become the eighth Ashina Spear had it not been for Hanbei dealing a crippling blow to his left arm during the war.
* CoolHelmet: One with a crest identical to the [[https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mitsuuroko.svg famous emblem of the Hōjō clan]].
* CoolMask: In battle, he wore a menpō with a particularly fierce scowl.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Genuinely cares for his son.
* {{Foil}}: Similar to Isshin, he's an old warrior who's past his prime but still a deadly foe to face. However, while Isshin has made peace with Ashina's inevitable defeat and refuses to have anything to do with Genichiro's interest in heretical powers, Takamine still festers with resentment at the sidelining of his clan [[spoiler:and has been helping to carry out the Ashina clan's experiments]].
* NameOrderConfusion: For some reason, his name is still rendered in Eastern naming order in the English translation, even though Isshin's was changed to reflect Western naming order.
* NeckSnap: [[spoiler:Meets his end from a rather gruesome version of this, courtesy of Hanbei shoving his hand down his mouth in order to break his throat from the inside.]]
* OldRetainer: Despite his age and injuries, he's still a fearsome warrior.
* RedBaron: Was known as "Takamine the Spear" during his prime.
* TheResenter: Is rather resentful about the Ashina choosing to promote former enemies like Gyoubu Masataka Oniwa over people from his own clan, believing it's because the Ashina don't want the Takamine to gain any more power.
[[/folder]]

* MasterSwordsman: Good enough to deal what would be mortal blows for anyone else to Hanbei in both of their fights.
* MookPromotion: In his first appearance, he's seemingly just a nameless bandit who happens to know Ashina sword techniques. By the end of ''Sekiro Side Story: Hanbei the Dying'', he's been powered up with the Rejuvenating Waters and serves as Hanbei's final and most difficult foe.
* SignatureMove: Has a fondness for the "Ichimonji: Double" sword technique.
* TheStarscream: His ultimate desire is to overthrow the Ashina.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Like Genichiro, he's a clan heir who will go to any lengths to restore his clan's power. They even both end up imbibing the Rejuvenating Waters.
