* AdaptationalNiceGuy: In the comics, Veronica is a mega AlphaBitch and RichBitch, though she has plenty of PetTheDog moments. In the TV show, Veronica is a reformed AlphaBitch who's become a NiceGirl.

* AmbiguouslyBi: Her first thought when she and Betty get in trouble during cheer trials is "Let's make out!" She was invoking GirlOnGirlIsHot to make them seem more interesting, but still. Her desperation to get Betty's friendship back in 1.02 also comes off as more of a jilted lover than a spurned BFF. Her actress has expressed interest in making her genuinely bisexual.

However, it's subverted since her kiss with Betty was more for shock value and a case of BaitAndSwitchLesbians. She, along with Betty, is canonically straight and has only shown romantic and sexual interest in men.

* AnimalMotifs: Cats. She's a member of the music group Josie and the Pussycats and wears a CatEaredHeadband as part of her attire.

* BattleCouple: She's this with Archie. Archie is an ActionHero and Veronica is an ActionGirl. Together, they help to solve the problems of Riverdale together.

* BigEater: If Veronica isn't seen with a giant cup of coffee in her hand, then she's constantly seen to be eating something.

to:

* BigEater: If Veronica isn't seen with a giant cup of coffee in her hand, then she's constantly seen to be eating something. She mostly eats rather healthy, but she does have a penchant for indulging in comfort food and junk food quite a lot.

* {{Bookworm}: Veronica loves to read books and she has a fascination with literature. She's constantly making references to novels and books on the show. One of her favorite authors is Truman Capote and she lampshades this in 1.01.

* BrutalHonesty: Veronica does ''not'' mince her words.

to:

* BrutalHonesty: Veronica does ''not'' mince her words.words and says exactly what's on her mind, no matter how frank, blunt or cutting it may be. She's especially blunt and cutting when she's angry or irritated.

* ColorMotif: Black and Navy Blue. She's commonly wearing these colors.

* CuteBruiser: She's petite and the shortest of all the characters, but she's also tough, badass and can kick major ass.

* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: In some promotional photos for the series, Veronica appears to have very pale skin and black hair. However, she's actually light olive complected since she's Latina and it's just the lighting that makes her appear lighter skinned.

* HugeGuyTinyGirl: The Tiny Girl (5'0") to Archie (5'11"), Reggie (6'2") and Jughead's (6'0") Huge Guy. The height difference is very noticeable when Veronica is standing next to them in scenes.

to:

* HeterosexualLifePartners: Veronica is best friends with Betty. The two are so close they are pretty much a RomanticTwoGirlFriendship.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: The Tiny Girl (5'0") to Archie (5'11"), Reggie (6'2") (6'3"/6'0") and Jughead's (6'0") Huge Guy. The height difference is very noticeable when Veronica is standing next to them in scenes.

* NiceGirl: Veronica is kind, caring, compassionate and friendly, but it's unwise to [[BewareTheNiceOnes get on her bad side]]. She's a reformed mean girl and AlphaBitch after all.

* PopCulturedBadass: She's very knowledgeable about pop culture including film, art, music, literature. She's the character who consistently makes pop culture references throughout the series. The only other character who rivals her in this regard is Jughead.

* WellDoneDaughterGal: Veronica desperately craves her father Hiram's approval. Justified since he's a DaddysGirl who's devoted to her father and to making him pleased with her. Part of the reason why she wanted to be part of the Lodge family business was so she could prove herself to Hiram that she's capable of being business savvy.

* BrattyTeenageSon: It's justified because he comes from such a dysfunctional family with somewhat of a deadbeat alcoholic father. He's the epitome of an EmoTeen because he lacks a stable home life so whenever is calling out his father for his mistakes and bad behavior, his brattiness is very much understandable.
* BreakoutCharacter: Archie may be the main character and TheHero but Jughead is the most popular character on the show. A lot of his popularity is because his character is being portrayed by [[PrettyBoy Cole]] [[TallDarkAndHandsome Sprouse]], but in addition because Jughead is a very interesting, complex character according to the audience.

* BroughtToYouByTheLetterS: One of Jughead's signature clothing items besides his crown beanie are his shirts with a large "S" logo in the middle. He commonly wears these S shirts in black, maroon or grey. His comic book counterpart famously wears the same "S" shirts along with his crown beanie being emblazoned with a "J" for his name Jughead.

* CannotSpitItOut: Jughead has difficulties with expressing his emotions and saying how he feels at times. He's become significantly better at expressing himself once getting into a relationship with Betty.

* ColorMotif: Black and Grey. He's commonly wearing these colors.
* TheComicallySerious: Jughead from the comics is more PluckyComicRelief and light-hearted in his humor. Jughead on eat television show is more of a DeadpanSnarker with a very dry, cutting sense of humor.
* CoolBigBro: He was this to Jellybean when he was younger as they were very close. He's currently estranged from her since she is living with their mom and grandparents in Ohio.

* TheCynic: He's very pessimistic, cynical and brooding. Considering how crappy his life is, it's no shock. He needs optimistic and idealistic people like Archie, Betty and Veronica to bring him out of his sullen, cynical moods.
* DaddyIssues: He has major issues with his father FP but justifiable since his dad is involved in tons of criminal activity that has gotten him and the family in trouble on numerous occasions. His father is an AlcoholicParent who falls on and off the wagon repeatedly and cares more about drinking than putting his life back together. Jughead's relationship with FP was very tensioned filled and strained in season one and the two constantly got into arguments and fights. Things were so bad between Jughead and FP at one point that he [[TheRunaway ran away from home]] and was homeless for a time. Despite the issues with his dad, Jughead still loves him and is undying loyalty to him. He has a desperate need to gain his father's support and approval. It's a toss up between Jughead and Veronica on who has worst issues with their father.
* DarkerAndEdgier: Jughead has become less of the nerdy loner he was in season one to someone who is more badass, edgy and tough in season two. Much of the dramatic change in his personality is due to officially becoming a Southside Serpent. Along with this, he's become a morally ambiguous person though he's still a heroic and good person.

* DeadGuyJunior: Jughead's full legal name is Forsythe Pendleton Jones III. He's named after his paternal grandfather (Forsythe Pendleton Jones I) and his father (Forsythe Pendleton Jones II). His younger sister has the feminine version of his name which is Forsythia Jones, but she's known as Jellybean.

* TheDeterminator: Jughead's one of the most determined and persistent characters on the show. Once he's got his mind set on something or wants to achieve or accomplish a goal or agenda, he'll stop at nothing to get it.
* DidNotSeeThatComing: Jughead was completely blindsided and shocked when his father was arrested for the "murder" of Jason Blossom. Jughead wasn't only shocked, but horrified so much he went to his trailer and started to trash it.
* DontYouDarePityMe: Hates when people feel sorry for him or pity him. Most likely because he doesn't like appearing emotionally weak or vulnerable.
* DoNotCallMePaul: His given name is Forsythe but he apparently dislikes his name so much that he prefers to be called Jughead. Toni referenced him by his full name of Forsythe Pendleton Jones III the first time she met him at Southside High only for Jughead to quickly correct her and tell her his name is Jughead.
* DracoInLeatherPants: It's downplayed. Jughead isn't a villain but instead an AntiHero who does morally ambiguous and questionable things on occasion. This doesn't stop the fangirls from constantly trying to brush his wrongdoings under the rug and make him appear as though he's still perfect. They even resort to [[RonTheDeathEater bashing and putting down Archie]] in order to make Jughead look better or good in comparison.

* EmotionlessBoy: It's subverted. Jughead appears to be emotionless, aloof and distant on the surface, but he's very emotional, passionate and intense underneath. He's become a lot more open about expressing his emotions since getting involved with Betty and having friendships with Archie and Veronica.
* FingerlessGloves: As a member of the Southside Serpents, Jughead has worn black fingerless gloves with his Serpent attire.

* FreudianExcuse: His is an heroic example. He's no villain but the reason why Jughead is so distant, moody, aloof and anti social is cause he's from such a highly troubled, dysfunctional gamily background that lacks stability. He has serious DaddyIssues as well as MommyIssues with an AlcoholicParent in FP who's involved in criminal gang activity. He has a MissingMom because she left the family along with taking his younger sister out of Riverdale to move to Ohio to live with her parents. He's afraid of getting too close or attached to others out of fear of being rejected or abandoned by others.
* FriendlessBackground: It's downplayed as Jughead self identifies as a loner who's anti social and doesn't belong. However, Jughead's social circle becomes expanded though it's still limited to Betty, Archie, Veronica and sometimes Kevin and Cheryl.
* GenerationXerox: He's turning out somewhat like FP in that he's following in his father's footsteps by becoming a member of the Southside Serpents. It was presumed that Jughead was nothing like his father as in high school, FP was a popular athlete and BigManOnCampus while Jughead is a social outcast and a nerdy loner who loves to write and read.

* GreatDetective: It's downplayed since Jughead is more of an AmateurSleuth who's curiosity gets the best of him and causes him to want to investigate and solve the many mysteries that goes on in Riverdale.
* GreenEyedMonster: Has a strong jealous streak and it can easily be activated from time to time.
* GrumpyBear: He's very cynical and pessimistic in his attitude. He's a PerpetualFrowner and is brooding and intense. He's this way because of his dysfunctional background so it's justified why he doesn't have an idealistic approach to things in general. He needs optimistic, upbeat and idealistic people such as Betty, Archie and Veronica to pull him out of his sullen, brooding and funky moods.
* GuileHero: Uses his brains and his intelligence to solve the mysteries of Riverdale.

* HeterosexualLifePartners: He and Archie view each other as brothers.

to:

* HeterosexualLifePartners: He and Archie Jughead is Archie's best friends. They're so close that they view each other as brothers.brothers even though they aren't related.

* HugeGuyTinyGirl: The Huge Guy to Veronica's Tiny Girl. The height difference between the two is quite noticeable whenever they share scenes together.

to:

* HugeGuyTinyGirl: The Huge Guy (6'0") to Veronica's Tiny Girl.Girl (5'0"). The height difference between the two is quite noticeable whenever they share scenes together.

Added DiffLines:

* IcyBlueEyes: Technically, they are more grey eyes, but it still counts since Jughead has a very intense, penetrating gaze or stare.

Added DiffLines:

* PopCulturedBadass: Jughead makes consistent pop culture references on the show because he's very knowledgable and savvy about film, art, literature, and music. The only other character to rival him in his pop culture savviness is Veronica.

Added DiffLines:

* WellDoneSonGuy: Jughead strongly craves his father FP's approval. He wanted to become a Southside Serpent so that he could prove himself to his father and part of his father's legacy.

* AdaptationalAngstUpgrade: in the television adaptation, Veronica has much more personal and family issues that she's constantly dealing with in comparison to the comic book adaptation. For example, her family is incredibly dysfunctional and she has a criminal father who went to jail and was absent from her life for a period of time. She has deep seated issues and is emotionally repressed because she grew up in a family where love and affection weren't expressed or shown between her parents.

** Jughead has called her "Raven-Haired Princess" to Archie in 1.11.
* AFriendInNeed: Veronica is very supportive to her friends especially when they need comfort or support. She's always there for Archie, Betty, Cheryl and Jughead when they are having personal issues.
* AllLovingHeroine: Constantly tries to see the good in others and believe the best in people even those who don't always deserve it.

* AmbiguousDisorder: Some fans have speculated that Veronica may have undiagnosed ADHD because she needs constant attention, gets bored easily and has an excitable personality.

* BigDamnKiss: Veronica has one with [[spoiler: Jughead in 2.14 and lets just say it's a pretty steamy, passionate, and intense kiss with underlying BelligerentSexualTension between the two.]]

* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: The Gentle Girl to Jughead's Brooding Boy. Veronica has a habit of making an intense, moody and brooding Jughead break a smile from time to time.

* GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak: She's very feminine and girly but she's also tough, edgy and strong. She's also into wearing dark colors such as black and navy blue and is rarely seen wearing pastel colors like light pink or baby blue.

* IdleRich: It's subverted because Veronica may be wealthy but she likes to be involved in things. She's hardworking, ambitious and dedicated. She was openly passionate about being a part of the Lodge family business and she took an interest in having a much larger role in Lodge Industries. She's far from idle or lazy.

* LonelyRichKid: This is subverted because Veronica is rich but she's also popular and well-liked.

* MaleGaze: Is subjected to these occasionally, Archie [[DistractedByTheSexy being awestruck by her]] the first time he laid eyes on her.

The dark and edgy big city girl who was a RichBitch takes an almost instant liking to the sweet and peppy small town girl Betty. Betty even lampshades it when Veronica stands up to Cheryl for not accepting Betty into the River Vixens:

** Veronica's friendship with Jughead. Veronica is a rich big city girl from New York City while Jughead is a poor small town boy from the Southside of Riverdale. They couldn't be more opposite on the surface yet they share tons of things in common and do have a special connection. Since they come from differing socio-economic backgrounds, they're an InterClassFriendship. They're also VitriolicBestBuds since they banter, argue, bicker and tease each other frequently.

* ProperLady: She's a combo of this and SpiritedYoungLady. She comes from a wealthy background with tons of money, status, and privilege and acts accordingly.

* RebelliousPrincess: Will gladly go against authority or her parents if she doesn't agree with them. She went against her parents when she wanted to pay Fred's medical bills.

* RichesToRags: Her family temporarily loses everything after her father is arrested for fraud and embezzlement and is sent to prison. She and her mother have to leave New York and move back to Riverdale following the scandal with the Lodge family. But the Lodge family's loss of wealth and status is only temporary since the Lodge family is now wealthy and powerful once again once Hiram is released from jail.

* ScrewTheRulesIMakeThem: Pretty much Veronica's motto. She says it word for word in 1.03.

* SlobsVersusSnobs: Veronica is the Snob to Jughead's Slob. He's poor and comes from the Southside while Veronica is rich and comes from the Northside. Due to the contrasting socio-economic statuses between the two, they have a tension filled relationship. it's gotten worse since Jughead has [[spoiler: discover that Veronica's father Hiram has some very shady and underhanded plans for the Southside and Riverdale in general]].

* SpoiledBrat: She was more this while she was living in New York. She's now more SpoiledSweet.

to:

* SpiritedYoungLady: Veronica is high status and upper crust but passionate, feisty, opinionated and outspoken.
* SpoiledBrat: She was more this while she was living in New York. Now she's more SpoiledSweet.
* SpoiledSweet: She used to be a SpoiledBrat while living in New York but since her CharacterDevelopment, she's become a much nicer and kinder person as well as less selfish and entitled.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Along with being a {{Tsundere}}.
She's now more SpoiledSweet.nice most of the time, but she does have an edge to her depending on who she's interacting with.

* UpperClassTwit: An inverted example. Being a rich girl, it's expected that Veronica would be nothing more than a ditz with a trust fund who likes going on endless shopping sprees and attending parties. But she's very intelligent, savvy and knowledgeable about a wide variety of things so much she's a BrainyBrunette. She certainly breaks the stereotype of rich girls being stupid and shallow.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Her relationship with Jughead is marked in constant banter, bickering and sarcasm. They still have a bond and genuinely care about each other when they aren't fighting or arguing with each other.

* AdaptationalAngstUpgrade: Jughead in the comics is more light hearted and fun. But Jughead in the television adaptation is much more serious, moody and brooding because he comes from a dysfunctional family and has loads of personal and emotional issues.

* AdaptationalBadass: Jughead in the comic books adaptation is merely a BigEater and the PluckyComicRelief who's meant to be the funny character that incites constant laughs. But Jughead in the television adaptation is edgy, tough and badass. He's a member of the Southside Serpents a criminal biker gang from the rough side of Riverdale called the Southside. Jughead on the show is willing to use physical violence and aggression while Jughead in the comics wouldn't ever think of using violence against anyone.
* AdaptationalJerkass: Jughead in the comics is merely a BigEater and the PluckyComicRelief meant to incite tons of laughs. But Jughead in the television show is more aloof, distant, cutting, sarcastic and edgy. He's a social misfit who doesn't belong and is rather anti-social.

* AffectionateNickname: Betty and Archie tend to use "Juggie" or "Jug". "Jughead" itself is a nickname, as his legal name is "Forsythe Pendleton Jones III".

to:

* AerithAndBob: Jughead with anybody on the show whether it's Archie, Betty, Veronica, since his name is so unusual and unique. His actual name Forstyhe is just as strange as his nickname.
* AffectionateNickname: Betty and Archie tend to use "Juggie" or "Jug". "Jughead" itself is a nickname, as his legal name is "Forsythe Pendleton Jones III". Veronica has called him Holden Caufield in 1.07.
* AllBikersAreHellsAngels: Jughead drives a motorcycle since becoming a member of the Southside Serpents. The Serpents are a criminal biker gang and motorcycles are the main mode of transportation.

* AllGuysWantCheerleaders: He's currently in a relationship Betty who is a cheerleader on the high school cheerleading squad, the River Vixens.
* AlliterativeName: '''J'''ughead '''J'''ones. It's subverted because his actual name is Forsythe Jones.
* AloofBigBrother: Subverted because though Jughead currently has an estranged relationship with his younger sister Jellybean, he's still very fond of her and talks highly of her. They were very close when he was younger.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Feels rather inferior next to Archie because Archie is popular, athletic, charming and attractive. He's expressed insecurities when it pertains to Betty feeling like once Archie reciprocates Betty's feelings, she'll drop him for Archie in a heartbeat.
* AmateurSleuth: Loves investigating and solving the mysteries of Riverdale. He's clearly cut out to be a detective since he's introspective and loves theorizing to the point of being a ConspiracyTheorist. He's a curious person who wants to know anything and that plays into his need to investigate everything that's happening in the town.
* AnimalMotifs: Snakes. It's the official symbol of his gang, the Southside Serpents. He wears a black leather jacket with a green serpent on the back.
* AntagonisticOffspring: This is downplayed because Jughead loves his father FP but frequently calls him out and tells him to stop making mistakes and get his act together.
* AwesomeMcCoolname: His name (more like nickname) is ''Jughead''. Talk about unique and interesting.

* AxCrazy: Jughead is sane but has a very threatening, violent and aggressive side when angered. He cut off Penny Peabody's tattoo with a dirty knife and left her in a ditch to die!
* BadassBiker: He has a CoolBike and drives a motorcycle and is a member of a biker gang called the Southside Serpents.
* BadassBoast: Definitely one to make threats to those who are in a higher power of position or authority over him such as Mayor [=McCoy=], Penny Peabody, Tall Boy, Hiram Lodge and even his father. He doesn't back down from making his thoughts and feelings known even if it lands him in trouble.
* BadassBookworm: It's downplayed. He's not overly athletic or a bruiser but he likes to use his intelligence to solve problems. He has a passion for writing and is currently writing his very own novel.
* BashBrothers: He's this with Archie. Archie plays the role of TheHero while Jughead plays the role of TheLancer and right hand man to Archie. They are a BrainsAndBrawn duo because Archie likes using his athletic prowess and Jughead likes using his intelligence.

In the TV show, Veronica is a reformed mean girl who's become a NiceGirl and DefrostingIceQueen. She's become a nicer and kinder person after going through CharacterDevelopment.

* {{Adorkable}}: Veronica has plenty of moments when she can be very endearing and lovable, mostly when she's interacting with her friends.

* AllWomenLoveShoes: There's no doubt that Veronica probably has an entire closet full of hundreds of different high heels considering that's all she seems to wear. She has a shoe addiction much like her comic book counterpart.

* AlphaBitch: Back in New York, Veronica was infamous for being the ultimate mean girl with a bad attitude. She was at the top of her school and treated others like her subordinates. She was also a bully and tormented other people for her own amusement. Once she realized how horrible the media portrayed her, she actively chose to become a better person. After CharacterDevelopment, she's become more of a LovableAlphaBitch.

* AmbiguouslyBrown: She's stated to be Latina, but her last name is Anglo-Saxon and isn't an Hispanic last name. It's uncertain if Veronica and her parents of of mixed Latina and Caucasian heritage therefore.
* AntagonisticOffspring: This is downplayed since Veronica evidently loves her father but upon finding out some of the horrible things he's done, she feared some resentment towards him for a time.

* BelligerentSexualTension: With Jughead as they constantly argue, snark and bicker with each other but underneath all of that, there's clear shades of sexual tension between the two. [[spoiler: In 2.14, Jughead and Veronica share an intense, passionate kiss with each other.]]

* BigFancyHouse: She's currently residing in the expensive, luxurious and large apartment called The Pembrooke.
* BigOlEyebrows: Veronica's eyebrows are very a dominant and noticeable feature on her face.

They have parallel lives, similar family backgrounds, similar interests and hobbies, and similar personality traits and qualities. They also have parallel storylines.
* BlackCloak: One of her signature clothing items is a black hooded cloak that she wears. She was seen wearing it in 1.01 when she first entered Pop's Diner.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead:
** Of the main trio, Veronica is the Brunette, Betty is the Blonde and Archie is the Redhead.

* BrainyBrunette: Veronica is intelligent, hard working and a good student. She has very good business acumen and has strong manipulation tactics.
* BrattyTeenageDaughter: Can act very spoiled and entitled from time to time but since she's a rich girl who had parents that spoiled her, it's understandable why she always wants to get her way and when she doesn't, she'll pout and act entitled.
* BrokenAce: Sure, she has everything going for her on the surface such as beauty, intelligence, popularity, and money, but underneath, she has a lot of deep seated emotional issues and family troubles that she doesn't talk about or discuss all that often.

* TheBully: Back in New York, she was a bully and mean girl who tormented other people for her own amusement. She realized how horrible she was and decided to change for the better. * DarkAndTroubledPast: She has a history and past of being a mean girl and a bully who caused pain to others. She chose to change her bad attitude once she saw how negatively she was being portrayed in the news. Her family also went through a terrible scandal when her father was arrested and sent to jail for fraud and embezzlement. Her family lost everything and she and her mom were forced to move to Riverdale to start over and escape the shame that the Lodge family acclaimed in the media. Veronica uses the move to Riverdale as a fresh start and to move on from her past.
* DarkIsNotEvil: She has a presence for dark or black clothes but she's a heroic and good person.
* DeadpanSnarker: Veronica has a very dry, sarcastic sense of humor.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Becomes kinder and nicer once she realizes what a horrible person she was being portrayed as in the media. Her friends and family also bring out a gentler and kinder side of her as well.
* TheDeterminator: Probably the most persistent and determined character on the show. Once Veronica once something, she never gives up.
* DisappearedDad: Her father Hiram Lodge is currently on trial for fraud and embezzlement, and is thus not in Veronica's life. [[spoiler: he later starts sending her messages from jail, some including threats, and by the end of season 1, it is revealed that he is about to be released from prison.]]]]

* TheDreaded: Veronica had an infamous reputation for being spoiled RichBitch and mega AlphaBitch who was a bully while living in New York. The news portrayed her this way and that was when she realized how horrible she really was and decided to change.
* DysfunctionalFamily: The Lodge family may be wealthy and privileged but do they ever have tons of baggage filled with utter dysfunction.
* EmotionallyTongueTied: She has repressed emotions and had difficulty telling Archie that she loves him. It's revealed that the reason for her inability to express herself is because she grew up in a cold, dysfunctional home with parents who are in a [[AwfulWeddedLife loveless marriage]] and have never said the L word to each other.
* FagHag: Veronica loves gay guys as she was extremely enthusiastic once she found out that Kevin was gay. Kevin has become her GayBestFriend.

* LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: Her interactions with Jughead are commonly marked in snark and sarcasm and they banter with each other.

* LovableSexManiac: Veronica is a highly sexual and flirtatious person so it's never really a surprise when Veronica constantly wants to engage in sexy times with Archie.

* MsFanservice: She is a very beautiful, latin american teenaged girl who tends to wear attractive outfits that highlight her slender yet voluptuous body and show off her long shapely legs.

* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: The Energetic Girl to Jughead's Savvy Guy. Veronica is a sociable, popular and upbeat extrovert while Jughead is an anti-social, serious, moody introvert.

* SpicyLatina: Averted. She's even-tempered and was a noted IceQueen before, and still demonstrates SugarAndIcePersonality tendencies.

to:

* SpicyLatina: Averted. She's even-tempered Veronica is Hispanic in this interpretation. However, she's not overly passionate and HotBlooded. Instead, she's even-tempered, aloof, calm and was a noted IceQueen before, and still demonstrates SugarAndIcePersonality tendencies.and {{Tsundere}} tendencies.
* SpoiledBrat: She was more this while she was living in New York. She's now more SpoiledSweet.

* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The Girly Girl to Betty's Tomboy. Veronica is very girly while Betty is more tomboyish.
* {{Tsundere}}: She used to be Type A Pre-Series but now she fits Type B. She has a SugarAndIcePersonality and can mostly be nice, but don't piss her off or get on her nerves.

* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Jughead is technically a "bad boy" since he's intense moody edgy and comes from a dysfunctional background. Not to mention that he's a poor delinquent who's a member of a criminal biker gang on the Southside. However, it's subverted because Betty wasn't attracted to Jughead because of his bad boy appeal but because he was there to support her during an emotionally hard time.
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: Jughead argues, bickers and fights with Veronica on occasion but he does care about her and sees her as a friend.
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Veronica as they constantly argue, snark and bicker with each other but underneath all of that, there's clear shades of sexual tension between the two. [[spoiler: In 2.14, Jughead and Veronica share an intense, passionate kiss with each other.]]

They have parallel lives, similar family backgrounds, similar interests and hobbies, and similar personality traits and qualities. They also have parallel storylines.

* BrilliantButLazy: He's very smart and intelligent, but sometimes he slacks off and lets his personal problems and Serpent business overtake his life. FP even calls him out for it by telling him that he doesn't want the Serpent life for him and he wants him to focus on his writing, going to college and main something of himself in the future.

* BrutalHonesty: Says exactly what is on his mind and can be cuttingly sarcastic and blunt, especially when angry, irritated or annoyed.

* GoodOldFisticuffs: Lacking any formal training, when it comes to fights Archie is purely a brawler, relying on his physical strength, reflexes and durability, over actual fighting skill. This is best demonstrated when facing the serpents in Chapter 17.

* {{Hunk}}: Archie's features are that of a PrettyBoy, but a [[MrFanservice lot of attention]] is given to his athleticism.
* IconicOutfit: His classic blue and yellow Riverdale letterman jacket, a piece of clothing that Archie is always seen wearing in the comic books. He’s rarely seen without it.

* ItsAllMyFault: In the Season 2 premiere, [[spoiler: Archie ends up blaming himself for his father being shot. He calls himself a coward because he ended up freezing and didn't do anything to stop the man from shooting.]]
* JustFriends: What he proclaims his relationship with Betty to be. However, going by the longing and lingering looks that he's been giving Betty lately, that's clearly not the case...
* KidAnova: Archie was already kissing or making out with Betty when he was in second grade (which means he was about '''7-years-old!''') and he's also slept with a [[LikesOlderWomen much older woman]] ([[TeacherStudentRomance Miss Grundy]]) at the tender age of ''15-years-old''. Archie has been TheCasanova in the making since he was a child.
* TheLeader: Combined with TheHero. Archie is the obvious leader of the group including himself, Betty, Jughead, Veronica, Josie and Cheryl. The others always seem to follow Archie's lead in almost everything. Jughead serves as right hand man and TheLancer to Archie.
* LikeFatherLikeSon: Archie most definitely took after Fred in many ways. Both Fred and Archie were in the middle of a BettyAndVeronica type of love triangle, share a love of music, and are kind hearted, caring and friendly towards everyone.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch:
** For Betty. Archie was Betty's emotional support since they were ''four years old''. They were presumably rather codependent on each other and they always turned to one another for emotional comfort and affection. Archie and Betty's deep connection and strong attachment towards each other was one of the reasons why Betty was so deeply attached to Archie because Archie was pretty much all she had outside of her troubled, dysfunctional family. Archie's friendship with her was Betty's escape from her problems and he kept her emotionally sane and stable.
** For Jughead. Archie and Jughead have been best friends since childhood and the two strongly depend on one another. Jughead is especially dependent on Archie because he has a lot of troubles and he comes from a dysfunctional background. Therefore, he often requires the emotional support of his best friend.
** For Veronica. Archie has provided Veronica with a sense of happiness away from her dysfunctional family. He was also one of the few people who didn't care about her DarkAndTroubledPast and he's able to break through her IceQueen facade and bring out her more tender, vulnerable and emotional side. Interestingly enough, Veronica has become this to Archie in Season 2 and is the one who's emotionally supporting Archie after he ends up traumatized and suffering from PTSD.

* MrFanservice: Unlike his original counterpart in the comics, ''this'' Archie actually warrants the attention he receives from girls.
* NiceGuy: He's got his flaws, but he's all around polite and a good natured fellow.

* LookingForLoveInAllTheWrongPlaces: As a result of DesperatelyCravesAffection, Archie craves validation and thus has a really bad habit of falling for every single girl that he meets.
* LovableJock: Archie may be an athlete and a football player but he's very much a NiceGuy who's incredibly goodhearted and noble. He's the opposite of Reggie, who fits the JerkJock type.
* LoveAtFirstSight: More like Attraction At First Sight to Veronica. Archie was clearly DistractedByTheSexy when he first laid eyes on Veronica in the first episode.
* LoveHungry: Due to DesperatelyCravesAffection. Archie seems to crave constant emotional connection from others whether it be in the form of love or affirmation. It's why the guy can't settle down with one person for too long.
* '''LoveHurts''': Archie's love life is an absolute mess. He's been involved with many different girls because he's a SerialRomeo that is LookingForLoveInAllTheWrongPlaces. He DesperatelyCravesAffection and approval from others and that is why his love life is always so confusing for him. His best friend Betty was in love with him but he didn't feel the same way and he rejected her, only for him to end up having unrequited feelings for her when she ends up being with Jughead. He was in a relationship with Miss Grundy, which was morally wrong since she was much older than him and was his music teacher and he was an underage student. [[spoiler: She also ends up being killed by the mysterious gunman who shot his father and Archie is heartbroken over her death.]] He's in a relationship with Veronica, but his relationship with her is distant and confusing because of his ever ambiguous feelings for Betty and being distracted by his trauma and PTSD. Archie's love life has been one giant rollercoaster.
* MagneticHero: Due to being highly charismatic and charming, Archie is popular, well liked and is the SchoolIdol and BigManOnCampus.

* MissingMom: Downplayed. Since his parents separated, his mother Mary now lives in Chicago and she's a lawyer for a living. She comes back to Riverdale in 1x10 to visit Archie and Fred.
* MrFanservice: Unlike his original counterpart in the comics, ''this'' Archie actually warrants the attention he receives from girls. It helps that he's always got a ShirtlessScene in almost every single episode.
* NervousWreck: Since his father Fred had been shot, Archie has been completely anxious and paranoid about his surroundings. Justified since he's going through some serious trauma and is obviously suffering from the effects of PTSD.

* NiceGuy: He's got his flaws, but he's all around friendly, kind, caring, polite and a good natured fellow.fellow.
* ObliviousToLove: Archie has never noticed that Betty has been in love with him since they were kids, and is surprised by her confession. This causes him to freak out and reject her because he doesn't think he's good enough for her.
* OfficialCouple: With Veronica since Season 1. They consummated their relationship in the Season 1 finale.
* PrettyBoy: Unlike his comic book counterpart, who was very much TheGenericGuy and the RidiculouslyAverageGuy, this adaptation of Archie manages to be a combination of both this and a {{Hunk}}.
* PrimaryColorChampion: Archie is commonly seen wearing blue, red and yellow colors, which are all colors that are commonly worn by heroic characters. Archie is TheHero so it's fitting that a lot of his wardrobe consists of these colors.
* TheProtagonist: Although ''Riverdale'' is essentially an ensemble cast that focuses on many characters, the story generally centres on Archie and how the other characters affect Archie's life. It comes with being TheFace of the ''ArchieComics'' franchise.

Added DiffLines:

Archie is even willing to use first a bat and then [[spoiler: a gun]] to use against the man for protection shall he come face to face with him. It's evident that Archie's trauma and PTSD is manifesting into anger (TranquilFury to be exact).

Added DiffLines:

* RedheadedHero: ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin. Archie is a redhead who's also TheHero.
* RedOniBlueOni: The Red Oni (passionate, idealistic, ambitious) to Jughead's Blue Oni (aloof, distant, brooding)

Added DiffLines:

* SecretRelationship: With Veronica, at first. Archie and Veronica haven't progressed past handholding with everything that's going on, but they're still hiding that from their friends. This is later subverted when Archie and Veronica tell Betty that they are officially together and Betty being totally accepting of their relationship.
* SerialRomeo: Dear God, Archie seems to ReallyGetAround so much that he appears as if he can't settle down into one relationship for too long. In the span of 13 episodes, he's dated or been romantically involved with ''four different girls'' including Betty (although it was unrequited on his part), Ms Grundy, Valerie and Veronica. The guy can't seem to settle down with one girl for the life of him although he seems to have settled for Veronica for now.
* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend: In the first episode, Veronica asks Archie upfront if he's in love with Betty or if he's ever been in a relationship with her. Archie tells Veronica that Betty is not his girlfriend and that they are JustFriends. However, it's subverted at the end of the season as Archie seems to finally be reciprocating Betty's feelings. Too bad that she's now with Jughead and it's now an UnrequitedLoveSwitcheroo.
* ShirtlessScene: Archie seriously seems to be allergic to an article of clothing called a shirt. Is there ever a single episode when Archie is not shirtless at least once?
* TheSoCalledCoward: In the Season 2 premiere, Archie calls himself a coward during the time that his father was shot because he happened to freeze out of fear of what the gunman would do. In reality, Archie is actually very brave and heroic. His friends and his father try to convince him that's the opposite of a coward and that his reaction was completely normal in that type of situation.
* StepfordSmiler: Archie puts on a smile but underneath, he has a lot of insecurities and emotional issues that he hides behind it.

Added DiffLines:

* TookALevelInJerkass: [[spoiler: During the beginning of Season 2, Archie becomes less and less of the NiceGuy he is. Getting consumed with vengeance against the Black Hood, and letting his rage get out of his control becoming more of an AntiHero. He's already showing negative changes to his personality such as taking drugs, acting emotionally distant from his loved ones, and using weapons. Granted, the negative change in Archie's personality is justified since it's apparent that Archie has some serious trauma and is suffering from PTSD.]]
* WellDoneSonGuy: Archie has openly admitted that he wants to make his father proud and that he wants his approval and support, no matter what he chooses to do with his life.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Grows into this in season two. After the Black Hood almost kills his father, Archie takes it upon himself to protect him. When it becomes clear the Black Hood is terrorising all of Riverdale, worried that Sheriff Keller isn’t doing enough, Archie starts the Red Circle as a neighbourhood watch group just to keep the town safe. But on Hiram’s prompting and his growing obsession, Archie shifts, causing the Red Circle to become proactive and him to grow obsessed with taking the Black Hood down to keep the town safe.
* WillTheyOrWontThey: With Betty. They have clear UnresolvedSexualTension and history, but due to Archie's ever ambiguous feelings for Betty especially as of the Season 1 finale, it's hard to tell what the future of their relationship will be.

Added DiffLines:

* TheAce: Betty is beautiful, popular, smart (she gets straight A's and is a stellar student), and a cheerleader for the high school cheerleading squad (the Riverdale Vixens). Jughead even lampshades this during an argument with Betty by calling her the perfect girl in every way possible. Even Betty refers to herself as the perfect daughter who does everything right.
* AdaptationalAngstUpgrade: Betty in the comics is much more light hearted and doesn't seem to have a bunch of personal and emotional issues weighing her down. However, her television counterpart struggles with a highly dysfunctional family, love and relationship problems, and mental health issues.
* AdaptationalBadass: Comics Betty is more of the regular GirlNextDoor who's down to earth and spends most of her time pining for Archie and his affections (although she's a GoGetterGirl who's intelligent and hardworking). On the other hand, in show Betty likes to take part in all of the drama and action that occurs in Riverdale and she seems to be more of an adventure seeker. She purposely seeks to solve the mysteries and the dark stuff that goes on in the town she lives in. Unlike the Comics, this Betty also has a significantly darker, aggressive side to her personality which makes her much more badass.
* AdaptationalJerkass: Downplayed. Comics Betty was super sweet and the epitome of a NiceGirl. However, show Betty is a nice girl but with a dark and edgy side. She battles serious anger management issues and she can be very manipulative and cunning as well. It's a side of her called "Dark Betty".
* AdaptationalPersonalityChange: Comics Betty is light hearted, enthusiastic, peppy and a GenkiGirl to boot, but in the show Betty is much more of a StepfordSmiler who's hiding a lot of emotional issues and has a darker side to her.

Unless this show is an adaption of the newer comics, there is no adaptional sexuality because Jughead was not asexual in the orginal comics.

* AdaptationalSexuality: In the newer comics canon, he is asexual. The show changes this up yet again by making him straight, and without the romantic obliviousness that initially defined his--at first presumably heterosexual, but also possibly asexual--comics counterpart. Needless to say, this earned the [[TheyChangedItNowItSucks ire of some fans of the newer direct-market comics]].

!! Archibald "Archie" Andrews
[[quoteright:300:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_ojdrqkqb4h1rotpp7o5_1280.jpg]]
->'''Played by:''' K.J. Apa

A sophomore at Riverdale High School who struggles with his conflicting interests of football and music, as well as the newfound attention he receives from girls after becoming [[HeIsAllGrownUp newly attractive over the summer]].
----
* TheAce: A handsome, athletic, popular and talented singer-song writer. Lampshaded by Veronica in pilot episode:
-->'''Veronica''': You play football too? What don't you do?
* ActionHero: Archie is always involved in the middle of all the drama and he's most certainly not afraid to take action either. He saved a drowning Cheryl by punching through solid ice. Jughead even compared Archie to being a SuperHero, referring to him as "Pureheart The Powerful".
* AdaptationalAngstUpgrade: In the Comics is much more light-hearted and laidback. In the show Archie is angst ridden and bogged down with constant insecurities. In addition to his insecurities, he's also surrounded by constant drama and the toll of bad things happening to him, his friends and family.
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: Much like the [[ComicBook/ArchieComics2015 2015 reboot]] of ComicBook/ArchieComics, this interpretation of the character is noted for his looks, which is a new development for him as the series begins.
* AdaptationalBadass: Comic book Archie is TheKlutz and is also a bit of a wimp or coward despite his noble intentions and good heart. On the other hand, the television version of Archie is much braver. Its hard to imagine comic Archie punching through rock hard, solid ice (to the point where his hand ends up bloodied and bruised and he has to wear a cast on it) to save someone from drowning and dying.
* AdaptationalPersonalityChange: Whilst in both the Comic’s and the show are both innocent NiceGuy who's TheHero, in the Comics Archie is something of a CoolLoser, being nerdier and socially awkward. Plus he's very much TheKlutz. In the Show is more of a MrFanservice who is much more confident and athletic than his comic book counterpart.
* {{Adorkable}}: Despite the fact that Archie is a BigManOnCampus who is also a ChickMagnet, he can also be very awkward but endearing, especially when it comes to his interactions with girls.
* AdultFear: When his father Fred ends up getting shot, Archie becomes so traumatized by his shooting and the possibility of his father dying that he ends up suffering from PTSD.
* AffectionateNickname: He is often called "Arch" by his BestFriend, Jughead. Veronica calls him Archiekins.
* AllGuysWantCheerleaders: Veronica and Betty have caught Archie's attention and they are both cheerleaders. Plus, Veronica, Betty and Cheryl, who's also a cheerleader and the head of Riverdale Vixens, have all expressed romantic interest in Archie as well.
* AllLovingHero: Archie always tries to see the best in people and he's always willing to give people second chances. He's very much like Betty in this regard.
* AlliterativeName: '''A'''rchibald "'''A'''rchie" '''A'''ndrews.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Archie may appear to be TheAce who has it all and is seemingly good at everything that he does, but the boy has serious insecurity issues. He's even proclaimed to Betty that he's not good enough for a perfect girl like her and that he doesn't believe he'll ever be worthy of someone like her. Archie seriously lacks confidence and self esteem underneath it all.
* AmbiguousDisorder: After all of the traumatic events that he's gone through since the Season 1 and into Season 2 especially [[spoiler: with his father being unexpectedly shot by the Black Hood]], Archie is showing signs and symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
* BadLiar: Archie is terrible at lying as it goes against his good-hearted and noble character. Plus, he's very expressive with his facial and body language and it gives away how he's truly feeling.
* BashBrothers: With Jughead. The two have been best friends and HeterosexualLifePartners since they were kids and they think of each other as brothers. Combines with RedOniBlueOni and BrainsAndBrawn.
* BatterUp: In the Season 2 premiere, [[spoiler: Archie decides to use a baseball bat as his WeaponOfChoice to protect his father if he ever confronts the masked man who shot his father.]] He later exchanges the bat [[spoiler: for a gun]].
* BettyAndVeronica: He is the Veronica for Veronica herself (with the Betty being Betty herself), and also the Veronica for Betty (with her Betty being either Veronica or [[PromotedToLoveInterest Jughead]].) His own Betty and Veronica are either Betty and Veronica themselves, or Veronica as the Betty and Miss Grundy as the Veronica.
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Veronica. They engaged in SnarkToSnarkCombat with each other occasionally and it was apparent that they were mutually attracted to each other from the start. They finally end up consummating their relationship and getting together in the Season 1 finale.
* BeneathTheMask: Archie appears to he a confident NiceGuy who gets all the girls and is TheAce at everything that he does. But in reality, he actually battles numerous insecurities and doesn't believe that he's good enough. Plus, it's clear that Archie is a complete emotional mess who has no clue on what he wants.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Archie is a NiceGuy, but that doesn't mean he's any pushover either.
* BigDamnHeroes: In the Season 1 finale, [[spoiler: he ends up saving Cheryl from committing suicide by punching through ice and brutally hurting his hand in the process so that he could stop a drowning Cheryl from dying.]] His heroic acts continue in the Season 2 premiere when [[spoiler: he rushes his father Fred to the hospital after he had been shot.]]
* BigManOnCampus: Archie is handsome, smart, popular and athletic and he's clearly a ChickMagnet and a SchoolIdol. What's not to like about him?
* BirdsOfAFeather: Archie has a lot in common with Betty. Both are well-liked at school, are nice people who try to see the good in others but also have a dark side to their personalities. Both of them care deeply about their family and friends. Both of them have an appreciation for music. Both of them have family troubles of some kind. Both have major insecurities about themselves. Being ChildhoodFriends may have played a part in this.
* BigOlEyebrows: Since this was a trait of his comic counterpart, it's only natural his actor would share such a feature. It helps that his eyebrows are a dark brown while his hair is red, leading to a striking contrast.
* BrainsAndBrawn: The Brawn (athletic and often uses his strength and athleticism to accomplish things) to Jughead's Brains (intelligent and often uses logic and smarts to achieve things). They very much compliment each other when it comes to solving things together because they each have what the other lacks.
* BreakTheCutie: Archie is slowly starting to break down emotionally and mentally. It starts to reach its peak at the beginning of Season 2 when his father Fred is unexpectedly shot by the Black Hood.
* BrokenAce: Over time, it becomes clear that Archie has numerous self-esteem issues, from doubt in his athletic and song-writing abilities to thinking he "isn't good enough" for Betty. [[TruthInTelevision These insecurities make him susceptible to someone like Grundy for comfort.]]
* TheCasanova: Archie clearly loves women and he ReallyGetsAround. Fred, even lampshades this and called him such after he realizes that he spent the night with Veronica.
* CharacterFocus: Averted. ''Riverdale'' is more of an ensemble piece rather than focusing on the Creator/ArchieComics namesake, hence the show's title reflecting the town as a whole.
* CharacterTics: Archie often runs his hands through his hair or places his hands on his head, normally when he's stressed or anxious about something.
* TheCharmer: Archie is very charming, magnetic and charismatic and he attracts people with ease, especially the opposite sex.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Since the Season 1 finale [[spoiler: after he ended up saving a suicidal Cheryl from killing herself to be with Jason at Sweetwater River]], Archie has grown a bit of a hero complex and feels the constant need to save other people. He repeated the same heroic act when he went to drastic measures to save his dying father who had been shot.
* CluelessChickMagnet: Combined with being a ChickMagnet. Betty has had a crush on him since childhood, he grabs Veronica's attention in minutes, and he strikes up chemistry with Valerie. Cheryl was a tiny bit flirty with him too after he helped her be cleared of suspicion of Jason's murder. He also had a fling with Miss Grundy, not that it's treated as a good thing. There's a bit of EvenTheGuysWantHim there, too, as Kevin is amazed to see his post-summer body in 1.01. Despite all this, Archie doesn't seem to realize just how appealing he is to girls (and guys too!). For example, he was completely oblivious to Betty's crush. However, when he ''does'' figure out the interest, [[TheCasanova he'll indulge in it]].
* CorruptTheCutie: Archie is easily manipulated and influenced due to his gullible and naive personality. After The Black Hood unexpectedly shot his father, Archie has started to suffer negative changes to his personality. He's beginning to spiral out of control emotionally and is currently walking down a darker and more dangerous path. [[spoiler: Archie is starting to take drugs as well as handle dangerous weapons like a gun, things that are considered to be abnormal behavior for Archie.]] In many ways, The Black Hood is indirectly corrupting Archie because of the chaos he's causing in Riverdale.
* ChickMagnet: Betty has had a crush on him since childhood, he grabs Veronica's attention in minutes, and he strikes up chemistry with Valerie. Cheryl was a tiny bit flirty with him too after he helped her be cleared of suspicion of Jason's murder. [[spoiler:He also had a fling with Miss Grundy, not that it's treated as a good thing.]] There's a bit of EvenTheGuysWantHim there, too, as Kevin is amazed to see his post-summer body in 1.01.
* ChildhoodMarriagePromise: After she helped him pass the second grade, he kissed Betty and asked her to marry him. Neither of them take it seriously now, but Betty humorously told him to ask her when she was eighteen.
* TheCutie: Archie's incredibly likeable, endearing, charismatic and {{Adorkable}} at times (especially in his interactions with girls). His kind, caring, goodhearted and endearing personality make it highly easy to root for him to succeed.
* DarkSkinnedRedhead: Due to his actor [[DyeingForYourArt not being a natural, pale-skinned redhead]].
* DesperatelyCravesAffection: He's constantly looking for validation and stability from the people around him. As a result, he frequently gets used by people like Grundy and the Blossoms. It's also the source of his famous dating indecisiveness.
* TheDeterminator: Indecisive sure, but unless he’s outright backed against the wall, he will not give up on anything, no matter how hard it gets.
* DumbJock: Subverted. Archie seems like the kind of athlete who has no intelligence, but overall he’s got average intelligence, and can quite smart and logical when he puts his mind to something. His real problems are that he impulsive and naïve.
* TheFace: Of the core group including himself, Veronica, Betty, Jughead, Josie and Cheryl. Archie's also "the face" of the show considering that the show is generally centred around him, his story and his journey.
* FieryRedhead: Downplayed. Most of the time, Archie is a very calm, mellow and down to earth guy. However, he does have a very passionate and fiery side when he's provoked. Even though Archie is cordial and diplomatic most of the time, it's really unwise [[BewareTheNiceOnes to push him to far]].
* {{Fingore}}: [[spoiler:In the Season 1 finale he has to punch through the frozen river to rescue Cheryl from her suicide attempt, with the ice more red than white by the time he succeeds.]]
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Phlegmatic.
* FunctionalAddict: Downplayed. To help him deal with the effects of his trauma and PTSD, Archie has started [[spoiler: taking a drug called Jingle Jangle, supplied to him by Reggie. Although he's not addicted to the drug, it's definitely cause for concern.]]
* GoodIsNotSoft: Archie is a NiceGuy who's friendly and caring to everyone....with the exception of those that he considers to be his enemies. If someone is an enemy to Archie, then they better watch out because there's a high probability that he won't show them any mercy. His obsession with [[spoiler: hunting down and getting revenge against the Black Hood, for shooting his father and terrorising Riverdale is clear sign of this.]]
* TheHeart: Archie is TheHero and he's the one who brings everyone together for a common goal or purpose. He seems to share this role with Betty.
* HeIsAllGrownUp: Turns out that working in construction over the summer does a body good.
* TheHero: Archie is clearly being set up as this, especially in the Season 1 finale when he brutally punches his hand through hard ice to save Cheryl from committing suicide. His hero complex continues in Season 2 where he ends up driving to the hospital (even though he doesn't even have a drivers license to begin with) so that he can get his dad who had been shot to the hospital. Jughead even lampshades Archie's heroic side by calling him "Pureheart The Powerful".
* HeroesLoveDogs: Archie has a fondness for dogs, going by how much he adores his dog Vegas. At one point he tells Veronica about how badly he wanted to have a dog.
* HeroicBSOD: Has a HUGE one when his father ends up getting shot. After that, Archie seems to be on an emotional downward spiral as a result of the trauma. He's also suffering from a serious case of PTSD.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Jughead, of whom Archie thinks as a brother.
-->'''Archie:''' You're like my brother.\\
'''Jughead:''' Nice bro-whisper, Archie. You ''are'' my brother.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: He really believed that [[spoiler:Ms. Grundy cared about him]], and later that the Blossoms would truly help him in his music ventures, though he does wisen up later.
* TheIdealist: Especially in comparison to his more cynical best friend, Archie is the sort of person who believes the best of people and that things will work out. This proves to be something of a double-edged sword. On the one hand it means [[HorribleJudgeOfCharacter he is more easily manipulated by others such as Miss Grundy and the Blossoms]]. On the other hand it also makes him a genuinely nice person, and able to see the hidden good side of others. He’s one of the few people who can see through Cheryl’s flaws to the better person underneath.
* LikesOlderWomen: Downplayed, since this iteration of Ms. Grundy isn't an elderly woman, but it still applies.
* LogicalLatecomer: Despite being a bit more naive than the others (due to being introduced to the complicated web of Jason’s murder later than his friends) Archie is able to think and react just a bit more rationally than his friends, who have grown jaded and gotten so used to the events not being what they seem they outright expect some new shocking twist or link. Examples include having to remind Veronica that the finding no evidence that links FP to her father is a good thing and that continuing to search his home won’t cause it to just appear, or that dealing with finding a dead body is well beyond anything they are capable of or should be involved in, and that they need to bring in the police and their parents.
* MrFanservice: Unlike his original counterpart in the comics, ''this'' Archie actually warrants the attention he receives from girls.
* NiceGuy: He's got his flaws, but he's all around polite and a good natured fellow.
* RaceLift: Averted, despite K.J. Apa (who plays him) being of Polynesian descent.
* ReallyGetsAround: As if Betty ''and'' Veronica weren't enough to keep him busy, this version of Archie also has a sexual relationship with [[TeacherStudentRomance Ms. Grundy, his teacher]]. Valerie of the Pussycats and Cheryl are also interested in him.
* ReplacementGoldfish: Archie is constantly compared to the deceased Jason Blossom in looks as well as personality; it's implied that this is why Blossoms want to use Archie as a replacement for Jason, with Cheryl even developing a crush on Archie [[IncestSubtext after noticing his similarities to Jason.]]
* SchoolIdol: Well liked and currently the object of desire by five different individuals.
* StrongButUnskilled: A variation in that for a teenager, he's incredibly well-toned, strong, and physically fit but he's so far been shown to be terrible at defending himself in a fight seeing how [[spoiler: Reggie knocked him out with a single blow]] and [[spoiler: a Southside Serpent was able to easily take him down and almost maim him]].
* SubmissiveBadass: Extremely non-confrontational, openly dislikes violence or disagreement in general. He’s also perfectly willing to walk into a den of potential murderers to help his father, and continues to punch through a sheet of solid ice, even after breaking his wrist, [[spoiler:to save Cheryl.]]
* TeacherStudentRomance: He had sexual relations with Ms. Grundy.

!! Elizabeth "Betty" Cooper
[[quoteright:300:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_ojdrqkqb4h1rotpp7o4_1280.jpg]]
->'''Played by:''' Lili Reinhart

An archetypical GirlNextDoor currently harboring a crush on childhood friend Archie, who becomes fast friends with Veronica--at the expense of her high-strung mother's approval.
----
* {{Adorkable}}: She gets very excited each time she figures out a new clue. When she’s confessing to Veronica about [[spoiler:Jughead kissing her]] the day before, her giddiness is both very dorky and very cute.
* AffectionateNickname: She is called "Bets" by both Jughead and Archie, and "B" by Veronica.
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: [[spoiler:Archie loves her, but not romantically. Averted with Jughead whom she develops mutual feelings for.]]
* AmbiguousDisorder: She's on Adderall for ADD or ADHD and doesn't precisely remember her behavior towards Chuck the next day in 1.03.
* AmateurSleuth: Together with Jughead, she’s slowly turning into a downplayed version of the trope, [[spoiler:if her ‘truth session’ with Alice and the speech she gave at the Jubilee in the season one’s finale is any indication]].
** This is lampshaded by Kevin, who calls her Nancy Drew.
* BerserkButton: Talking shit about her sister is a big no-no.
* BettyAndVeronica: She is of course Archie's Betty (with Veronica being the Veronica), but she's also Veronica's Betty (with the Veronica being Archie). Her Betty is actually Jughead, while her Veronica is Archie.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She is a kind-hearted and loving individual, but if you continually talk shit about the people she cares for, she will set you straight.
-->'''Betty''': ...get out of my house.\\
'''Cheryl''': Not until you tell me--\\
'''Betty''': Cheryl, get out of my house ''before I kill you''.
** It's also made clear that, despite her sweet nature, she is no pushover, as she stands up to people like Chuck and her own mother on multiple occasions.
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: She's the gentle girl to [[spoiler:Jughead]]'s brooding boy.
* CantSpitItOut: Has had a crush on Archie since second grade, but it's only until sophomore year that she actually says something. [[spoiler:It doesn't have a happy ending.]]
* ChildhoodFriends: She and Archie have known each other their whole lives. She tried to upgrade it to ChildhoodFriendRomance, with failed results.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: [[spoiler:Being close to Archie for such a long time made her think it was going this route, but he doesn't return the sentiment. She pulls it off with Jughead, though.]]
* ChildhoodMarriagePromise: Archie asked her to marry him after she helped him pass the second grade. Neither of them hold it seriously now.
* TheCheerleader: Naturally, given she's one of the most iconic in American Pop-Culture, Veronica pushes her into trying out for the squad and becomes one, to her mother's horror. (Notably, the horror had more to do with the captain of the Vixens, Cheryl, than the cheerleading per say).
* CuteAndPsycho: Betty seems to have some deep-seated rage issues at the least (not that Cheryl and Chuck weren't deserving targets) and may be suffering from some kind of mental illness, based on her apparent dissociation and identity crisis in 1.03.
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: Within five minutes of knowing Betty, Veronica asks if Archie is her boyfriend.
* FormerlyFat: The year before the events of the first season Betty was overweight enough for Cheryl to compare her to [[Series/MadMen "season 5 Betty Draper"]]. Though, this being [[AlphaBitch Cheryl]], Betty could've just been HollywoodPudgy at the time.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Sanguine.
* GoGetterGirl: Partially at the urging of her abusive, controlling mother, Betty has numerous extracurriculars and stellar grades.
* GoodGirlGoneBad: What Betty's mother fears will happen because of her friendship with Veronica.
* GirlNextDoor: Her bedroom window looks literally into Archie's.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Betty is a sweet girl with blonde hair.
* InnocentBlueEyes: Betty has very blue eyes that highlight her sweet, friendly personality. They, however, can become very [[IcyBlueEyes icy and intense]] when her berserk button is pressed.
* InterClassRomance: Betty’s clearly upper middle-class while Jughead’s a lot poorer and comes from the bad side of town. [[note]] Aside from Jughead alluding to it once, the issue hasn’t been an overtly addressed disparity in the show, but given where Season Two might be headed, it might come in play later.[[/note]]
* IntrepidReporter: Restarts the ''Blue and Gold'', Riverdale High’s newspaper.
* LightFeminineDarkFeminine: The light to Veronica's dark. She's a sweet GirlNextDoor while Veronica is an edgy FallenPrincess.
* LikeParentLikeChild: Betty is kind and pleasant most of the time, but if you push her BerserkButton, she will turn unbelievably nasty so fast your head will spin, a trait she shares with her [[spoiler:father.]]
** It is also revealed by Jughead's dad that her parents relation might have an inverted take on the UptownGirl relation she has with [[spoiler: Jughead. Her mother was also a South Side Serpent, while her father, who comes from an offspring of the Blossom clan, was upper middle class]].
* LoveConfession: Attempts one on Archie in 1.01. [[AllLoveIsUnrequited It doesn't end well.]]
** [[spoiler:Finally shares a mutual one with Jughead in 1.13.]]
* MoralityPet: Veronica's a good person, but rough around the edges and prone to occasional bitchiness. However she will always--''always''--put Betty first. It's clear that no matter how she feels about Archie, Veronica treasures Betty's friendship above all else.
* NiceGirl: For the most part. When Cheryl tries to use Betty's sister's relationship with Jason against her in cheer tryouts, Betty doesn't take the bait and remains civil. She does, however, have a tightly suppressed dark side, as seen in 1.02 when she threatens to kill Cheryl.
* OppositesAttract: [[spoiler:Outwardly, she and Jughead are very different with [[DeadpanSnarker contrasting]] [[GirlNextDoor personalities]], [[WrongSideOfTheTracks up]][[{{Suburbia}} bringing]] and even [[HairOfGoldHeartofGold hair]] [[TallDarkAndSnarky colours]]. Inwardly, they are [[AbusiveParents more]] [[TheWoobie well]]-[[StepfordSmiler matched]]]].
* ThePerfectionist: Sees herself as this. Has to be a star academic and the good girl and slim. She grows more confident in her skin later on.
* PromotedToLoveInterest: To [[spoiler:Jughead]].
* SelfHarm: A minor example; in 1.01 when Cheryl is berating her, she squeezes her hands so tight that her nails cut into her palms. She does this again in 1.10 when Chuck mentions her going "Dark Betty" as she is barely able to contain her anger.
* RelatedInTheAdaptation: [[spoiler:It's revealed in 1.12 that her ancestors and the Blossom's were brothers, Thus making her and Polly third cousins with Cheryl and Jason.]]
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: One of the reasons Betty got into a romantic relationship with [[spoiler:Jughead]] was because he’s compassionate, and was understanding and supportive during an emotionally difficult time.
-->'''Veronica''': Did I just notice Riverdale High’s very own Holden Caulfield, put his arm around you?\\
'''Betty''': ''[smiling]'' Okay, so, the past couple of days I haven’t been in a great place emotionally and, Jughead was really there for me.\\
'''Veronica:''' Oh my god, swoon!
* StepfordSmiler: Betty has a lot of complex emotional issues which she typically keeps behind a peppy smile, especially apparent when she interacts with her parents.
* WrenchWench: We see her help her dad fix a car. Like her comic book counterpart, she appears to be a competent mechanic.

[[folder:Veronica Lodge]]
!! Veronica Lodge
[[quoteright:300:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_ojdrqkqb4h1rotpp7o2_1280.jpg]]
->'''Played by:''' Camila Mendes

A NewTransferStudent from UsefulNotes/NewYorkCity who returns to her family's native Riverdale after a scandal involving her father makes the news, making quick friends with Betty--and taking a romantic interest in Archie.
----
* AdaptationalPersonalityChange: Veronica's personality in the comics bounced between being genuinely friendly, if not a bit snobby, and a full-out RichBitch. Here, she's a NiceGirl with a past of being a RichBitch like Cheryl.
* AffectionateNickname:
** Her mother sometimes calls her "mija," which is a Spanish affectionate term for "my daughter."
** Her friends, especially Betty and Archie, call her Ronnie, Ron or V.
* TheAtoner: A lot of her dialogue implies that she was a former AlphaBitch; however, in the present day, she's trying to be a better person.
** Later on, in her friendship with Ethel [[spoiler: after the latter's father attempts suicide after losing everything because of Veronica's father's embezzlement]] she attempts to also atone for the wrongs of her father.
* BerserkButton: 1.03 makes it clear that SlutShaming is hers. She goes full "scorched earth" on Chuck and his cronies for it, and rips into Cheryl for perpetuating it.
* BettyAndVeronica: She is either the Veronica to Archie (with Betty being the Betty), or his Betty (with Miss Grundy being the Veronica). She is also Betty's Betty (with the Veronica being Archie). Her Betty is Betty, and her Veronica is Archie.
* BrokenPedestal: Indicated she loved and admired her father and thus ripped apart to realize he was a massive fraud whose actions have humiliated and bankrupted the family. It gets even worse when she discovers [[spoiler:her mother not only knew but is helping her father with his plans to destroy land values in Riverdale.]]
* BrutalHonesty: Veronica does ''not'' mince her words.
* CharacterDevelopment: She's actively trying to force it on herself, not wanting to be the person she was pre-series.
* DaddysGirl: It is clear from the way that she talks about him that Veronica was very close to her father. Even after going through a major BrokenPedestal at discovering how corrupt he is, she still clearly loves him and openly calls him "Daddy."
* DisappearedDad: Hiram Lodge is currently on trial for fraud and embezzlement, and is thus not in Veronica's life. [[spoiler: he later starts sending her messages from jail, some including threats, and by the end of season 1, it is revealed that he is about to be released from prison.]]
* FallenPrincess: Thanks to her father's scandal.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Choleric.
* GenreSavvy: She is well aware of most of the tropes she is expected to fulfill, and refuses to play along. She is also very aware of the tropes about Riverdale itself, forshadowing the murder plot of the season by comparing the town's vibe to Literature/InColdBlood, without having early knowledge about the death of Jason Blossom.
* HardDrinkingPartyGirl: She used to be one, going on benders when her mother and her would argue when they lived in New York--she goes on one in Riverdale for the same reasons, but not to the same extent.
* HeelRealization: Pre-series, she had one, after her father's scandal. The media made her out to be a RichBitch IceQueen with no heart... and she realized they were ''right''. Veronica then vowed to use the move to Riverdale as a chance to change her ways.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's a little rough around the edges, but she is a good person deep down.
* IceQueen: Directly calls the pre-Riverdale Veronica one. She can still be frosty when she needs to be, but she's actively trying to be a warmer individual.
* IconicItem: Veronica almost always accessorizes her outfits with pearls, whether it be necklaces, chokers, bracelets, earrings, headbands, or even belts.
* LightFeminineDarkFeminine: The dark to Betty's light. This is highlighted in their dress choices in the pilot--Betty wears a more conservative, vintage-styled pink dress, while Veronica's is darker and more modern.
* LovableAlphaBitch: Her standing up for Betty, and bringing out the claws against deserving victim Cheryl earn her this status.
* MaleGaze: Is subjected to these occasionally, Archie [[DistractedByTheSexy being awestruck by her]] the first time he laid eyes on her.
* OddFriendship: The dark and edgy big city girl who was a RichBitch takes an almost instant liking to the sweet and peppy small town girl Betty. Betty even lampshades it when Veronica stands up to Cheryl for not accepting Betty into the River Vixens:
-->'''Betty''': Why did you defend me? I know the crowd you ran with in New York.
* OnlyFriend: A variant of this to Cheryl.
* PassiveAggressiveKombat: Her usual method of warfare whenever she and her mother are fighting; she gets her displeasure across via clubbing, shopping, and snide comments until she caves.
* RaceLift: This interpretation of Veronica is Latina, unlike her counterpart in the comics.
* RichBitch: A deconstruction. The Lodges were filthy rich, and flaunted it in New York. She admitted she was even worse than [[AlphaBitch Cheryl]]. But following the scandal around her father, she is actively trying to change, though the edge is still there.
* ShipperOnDeck:
** Says "I ship it" when talking to Kevin about his relationship with Moose.
** Says "Oh my god, ''swoon''!" about Betty's relationship with [[spoiler:Jughead]], adding that she approves.
** She also openly "endorses" the idea of Archie dating Valerie. In general, Veronica ''really'' wants her friends to be happy.
* TheSocialExpert: She manages to talk herself in or out of any situation she wants. In the pilot, she gets Betty onto the cheer squad by deconstructing Cheryl in front of everyone.
* {{Socialite}}: She and her mother were ones in New York. She mentions how she used to attend high-profile events such as The Met Ball.
* SpicyLatina: Averted. She's even-tempered and was a noted IceQueen before, and still demonstrates SugarAndIcePersonality tendencies.
* [[ThatManIsDead That Girl Is Dead]]: She references her past behavior before moving to Riverdale with shame, and whenever she occasionally comments about "the old Veronica," it's clear she doesn't think much of her.
* UndyingLoyalty: To her best friend, Betty. There's nothing Veronica wouldn't do for her, no matter how insane or illegal.
* WhatYouAreInTheDark: If she hadn't gone to comfort Cheryl, very few people would've known, and even fewer would've blamed her, given Cheryl's behavior. Veronica helps her anyway.

[[folder:Jughead Jones]]
!! Forsythe Pendleton "Jughead" Jones III
[[quoteright:300:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_ojdrqkqb4h1rotpp7o3_1280.jpg]]
->'''Played by:''' Cole Sprouse
Archie's former best friend and the series's {{Narrator}}, who is investigating Jason Blossom's murder as part of a TrueCrime novel he is writing about Riverdale in an attempt to expose the town's dark underbelly.
----
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: While Jughead has never been particularly ''bad'' looking in the comics, here he's more conventionally handsome, if looking a little grumpy and weary.
* AdaptationalPersonalityChange: Comics Jughead was more of the PluckyComicRelief, but is far more serious here.
* {{Adorkable}}: Jughead can be very endearingly awkward, most apparent where [[spoiler:Betty and his feelings for her]] are concerned.
* AffectionateNickname: Betty and Archie tend to use "Juggie" or "Jug". "Jughead" itself is a nickname, as his legal name is "Forsythe Pendleton Jones III".
* BetaCouple: Strongly subverted. While Jughead himself may be a supporting character to the main character Archie, the girl he's going out with, Betty, is considered one of ''the'' top two girls in the Archie-verse.
* BettyAndVeronica: He plays the Betty to Archie's Veronica for Betty Cooper herself.
* BewareTheQuietOnes: When [[spoiler:Chuck]] uses a party game to emotionally corner Betty about Betty's shaky mental health, Jughead, with no warning, punches him.
* BigBrotherInstinct: By the way he speaks about Jellybean, he seems very fond and protective of his ten year old sister.
* BigEater: Still a part of his characterization like in the comics, but greatly downplayed. His hunger isn't cartoonishly insatiable here, but he's seen frequently eating regardless. [[spoiler: Takes a darker edge when it's revealed he's homeless so his food fixation probably comes from being genuinely underfed and having to eat whatever he can get his hands on.]]
* BreakThemByTalking: Quite often, but given his [[DeadpanSnarker snarky]] IntrepidReporter status, understandable.
-->'''Jughead''': ''[to Archie]'' Weirdest thing. This summer we were supposed to go on a road trip over the July 4th weekend. Which you bailed on at the last minute. Is there something you wanna tell me, pal?\\
'''Jughead''': ''[to Dilton]'' Save it for your statement. Which you can make to Sheriff Keller, or to me. I suggest the latter.
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: The brooding boy to [[spoiler:Betty]]’s gentle girl.
* ByronicHero: Known to be ''very'' intense.
* ChildhoodFriend: With Archie.
** With Betty, too, but less prominently.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: [[spoiler:With Betty]]
* CreepyGood: Jughead is a good guy whose quiet, introspective nature and [[EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette striking appearance]] make him a tad bit intimidating. [[spoiler:His appearance and sketchy history eventually lead to him being a suspect for the murder.]]
* CreepyShadowedUndereyes: Downplayed. He has perpetual dark shadows under his eyes, which are more pronounced because of his dark hair and pale skin. With his life being increasingly [[TheWoobie difficult]] over the course of the season, it makes sense that he wouldn't get [[JustifiedTrope healthy amounts of sleep]].
* DeadpanSnarker: While Comic!Jughead had his moments, here he's a snarker through-and-through.
-->'''Jughead''': It's called "necrophilia," Reggie. Can you spell it
* {{Delinquent}}: Formerly. [[spoiler:He spent time in the juvenile detention centre when he was younger for playing with matches, which the teachers took to mean he was trying to [[NotWhatItLooksLike burn down his elementary school]]]].
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: Quiet, to-himself, with jet black hair. Reggie lampshades it when he accuses Jug of killing Jason Blossom.
* {{Emo}}: His wardrobe reflects this trope, as does his attitude (he's not quite playful or flamboyant enough in his cynicism and pessimism to be {{goth}}) and he is compared at least once to DonnieDarko.
* EmotionallyTongueTied: He seems to have trouble expressing himself when it comes to his deeper feelings. He gets flustered when trying to [[spoiler:articulate his romantic feelings for Betty]] and seems unable to speak beyond some simple "okay"s when his [[spoiler:father leaves him in Fred Andrews' care]].
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Melancholic.
* GrayEyes: Jughead has greenish grey eyes, which highlight his resilience, determination and intense, introverted personality.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: He has a really low opinion of himself and is highly insecure about [[spoiler:his relationship with Betty.]]
* HeterosexualLifePartners: He and Archie view each other as brothers.
* InnerCitySchool: [[spoiler:As of 1.13, Jughead’s transfers to Southside High. The contrast between it and Riverdale High is staggering.]]
* IntrepidReporter: For the ''Blue and Gold'', the first that Betty asks to join.
-->'''Jughead''': I'd love to stay, but I got to shake down an evil Adventure Scout. See you.
* InsecureLoveInterest: He fears rejection and being hurt, which strains his relationship with [[spoiler:Betty]] before they talk it out.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Distant, sarcastic, and moody, sure, but he genuinely cares about his friends.
* JockDadNerdSon: Downplayed. According to Fred Andrews, Jughead's dad was popular when he was a student, while Jughead himself is an introspective loner who prefers to read or write over playing sports.
* LikeFatherUnlikeSon: He's a serious, snarky, bookish and responsible young man, while his father is more boisterous, talkative and prone to making bad decisions. FP is aware of their difference and openly praises Jughead for taking after his mother by being smart, creative and responsible.
* LoveConfession: [[spoiler:To Betty in 1.13. Her response is positive: she happily says it back.]]
* ManHug: Justifiably Averted. After he and Archie finally mended their friendship before the start of Archie’s football game, Jughead humorously discourages the trope.
-->'''Jughead''': We're not going to hug it out in front of this whole town! So why don’t we just do that bro thing where we nod like douches and mutually suppress our emotions?
* MissingMom: Zig-zagged. His mother and sister are no longer in Riverdale, but he is in touch with them. [[spoiler:His father lives on the "south side" of Riverdale and runs with the local biker gang.]]
* MistakenForMurderer: Because of his and Betty's intricate "murder board," a perfect recreation of Sheriff Keller's, [[spoiler:Jughead is brought to the police station as a suspect in Jason Blossom's death.]]
* MrFanservice: Without actually having much in the way of any deliberate fanservice like Archie or Kevin get, Juggy drives the audience nuts just by being broody and smouldering. It helps that he's played by [[PrettyBoy Cole Sprouse]].
* TheNarrator: The show is told from his POV with narration.
* NiceHat: His beanie. In the comics, it was a "whoopee hat", while here, the hem of the beanie is cut like a crown.
* NotSoStoic: When Jughead is alone and talking with Betty after being [[spoiler:questioned by Sheriff Keller]] he seems genuinely ''terrified'' of what might happen to him.
* OppositesAttract: [[spoiler:He's TallDarkAndSnarky compared to bubbly NiceGirl Betty. It starts off as an OddFriendship until it reaches RelationshipUpgrade.]]
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Goes by Jughead, rather than either of his given names.
* ParentalAbandonment: Inverted with his father, who he voluntarily no longer lives with even after he becomes homeless. Played straight by his mother, who took Jughead's sister and left to go live with her parents. [[spoiler:When FP confesses to Jason's murder and Jughead calls her to propose reuniting with her, she turns him down.]]
* PerpetualFrowner: Well let's just say he isn't one to smiling a lot.
* PreppyName: As his school records show, his name is still Forsythe Pendleton Jones III.
* PromotedToLoveInterest: To [[spoiler:Betty]]
* RedOniBlueOni: Jughead’s rational, pragmatic, and [[LonersAreFreaks aloof]] Blue Oni to Archie’s big-hearted, enthusiastic, [[DidntThinkThisThrough hot-headed]] Red Oni.
* SeriousBusiness: Justified example with the local drive-in theatre. He takes it being closed ''extremely'' seriously and dramatically compares it shutting down to the death of the 'American Dream', something ''no one else'' takes any interest in. It becomes darkly justified when we find out that [[spoiler:he's been ''living there'' and shutting it down is basically kicking him to the streets.]]
* SnarkKnight: Intelligent, world-weary, and full of biting quips about the idiocy that’s surrounding him.
--> '''Jughead:''' Not saying anything to either you or Betty was the most moral, apathetic choice I could make.
--> '''Jughead''': ''[regarding Archie’s romance with Mrs Grundy [[spoiler:and his own campaign to save the drive-in he works in/living at from demolition]]]'' Yep, I feel that. Trying to hold onto something a lot older than me, too.
* SociallyAwkwardHero: Visibly uncomfortable around large groups of people and openly refers to himself as weird and dislikes being around anyone other than Betty and Archie. When his birthday party turns into a rager, he very quickly retreats.
** Averted when he [[spoiler:is transferred to a school in a less-preppy and more crime-ridden area. The rest of the gang bursts into his new school, worried about him... Only to find him surrounded by other similarly dressed students who laugh heartily at one of his jokes, and he's completely at ease.]]
* StepfordSnarker: Jughead has a very tumultuous home life, is a bullied loner and recently had a falling out with his best friend, but he hides most of his true feelings behind sarcasm.
-->'''Jughead''': Sardonic humour is just my way of relating to the world.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: He is distant, aloof and apathetic to everyone except from Betty, Veronica and Archie.
* SurroundedByIdiots: There’s a clear sense of general exasperation with his fellow peers.
-->'''Jughead''': Oh, look; it’s the rich kids from the Goonies.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: 6'0"? Check. A dark ensemble? Check. Played by Cole Sprouse, who could (and sometimes does) moonlight as a model? Check.
* TallDarkAndSnarky: Jughead is a natural snarker and is 6'0", as per his actor's height.
* TranquilFury: After witnessing Betty being harassed at a party over her mental health, he [[BewareTheQuietOnes snaps]] and gets into a fight with [[spoiler:Chuck]].
* WeUsedToBeFriends: He and Archie used to be close friends, but something came between them before the start of the series. They end up repairing their friendship shortly into the series.
* WhatTheHellHero: He ''rips'' into Archie for staying quiet about what he knows about Jason's death, and for sleeping with a teacher.
* WrongSideOfTheTracks: In 1.04, the audience learns that Jughead grew up in a home that didn't have much money. He calls himself this trope, word for word, in 1.10.[[spoiler:As of the finale, seems to have officially joined the ranks of the Serpents.]]
