The Land of Wano is a powerful, isolated country in the New World that is not affiliated with the World Government. It is based on feudal Japan and is renowned for its isolationism, and being inhabited by powerful samurai. The land was previously ruled by the Kozuki Family, until Kaido conspired with the family's usurper, Shogun Kurozumi Orochi, to overthrow their rule 18 years before the beginning of the story. It remains ruled by Orochi in allegiance with Kaido's faction.

* ArtisticLicenseGeography: Just like most of the New World, Wano's hydrography [[ItRunsOnNonsensoleum runs on nonsensoleum]]. The sea currents flow into the country like some sort of reverse river, and yet the Straw Hats come across a waterfall that brings freshwater into the sea just like a traditional river. This all happens ''in the same water stream''. The whole thing gets lampshaded.
* BystanderSyndrome: For many years, Wano has kept themselves isolated from the outside world, ignoring several major events such as the Paramount War.
* CloseRangeCombatant: Wano citizens traditionally favor swords or spears, which poses a problem for the rebellion as Orochi's been outlawing weapon possession for 20 years and the weapon factories have been producing neither as their products are slated for export.
* CrapsackWorld: Life outside of Wano's capital is not happy, to say the least. Because of Kaido's factories, the land has become a wasteland, not unlike that of Manga/FistOfTheNorthStar.
* EdibleThemeNaming: Five of the six major regions in Wano, Ringo, Kibi, Kuri, Hakumai, and Udon, are all named after food. They are however spelled slightly differently in Japanese to sound more like locations.
* GaiasLament: Kaido's factories have turned the countryside of Wano into a wasteland where the rivers are poisoned and wild animals roam free in abandoned villages.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Thanks to their BystanderSyndrome, most of the natives of Wano are completely ignorant of events and individuals that are well-known to the rest of the world. [[spoiler:This becomes extremely prevalent when Big Mom enters the picture, especially after she briefly becomes amnesiac. With the exception of Momo (who has experienced part of the world outside of Wano), locals like Tama, Kiku, and Hyogoro haven't a clue of who she is, let alone the fact that she's as dangerous as Kaido, the brutal warlord they’re trying to overthrow. As a result, they're confused when Chopper, Luffy, and, most of all, the Beast Pirates, including one of Kaido's top lieutenants in Queen, show themselves to be absolutely ''terrified'' of her]].
* OneSteveLimit: Averted. Several characters in Wano share names with other characters, though the names themselves are in kanji rather than katakana.
* RealIsBrown: Completely inverted. Sure, One Piece is a very outlandish and cartoonish series, but the country of Wano is even more colorful than [[CrapsaccharineWorld Whole Cake Island]], with every building having bright colours and the inhabitants wearing colorful clothing and [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair having strange hair colors]]. The author is said to have deliberately made the Land of Wano this colorful.
* RedLightDistrict: There is a literal one in the Flower Capital, where there are multiple courtesans.
* SamuraiPonytail: All the samurai from the Land of Wano, which is based on feudal Japan, wear their hair in a ponytail, making them easy to recognize. One of them, Kiku, ties her usual HimeCut into a high ponytail in combat.
* SceneryPorn: The Land of Wano looks absolutely ''gorgeous'', to say the least. Subverted in a big way though when we see what the country looks like ''outside'' the capital, however.
* StayInTheKitchen: Being based on feudal Japan, this is the country's general view on women. This isn't to say all the women in Wano are [[ActionGirl subservient]] [[SilkHidingSteel and submissive]] however.
* TokyoIsTheCenterOfTheUniverse: Well, considering Wano is basically the Japan of the ''One Piece'' world... Flashbacks of Wano's past and Kozuki Oden show how the major powers of the world are related to Wano one way or another. [[spoiler:In short, three out of the Four Emperors and the Pirate King himself worked with Wano in the past, and in the present Kaidou and the World Government are having long-term relationships with Wano.]] A fact that ex-Fleet Admiral Sengoku himself lampshades in Chapter 957.
* WorldOfBadass: ''In'' a World Of Badass, no less. Wano has managed to maintain its isolation thanks to this, in addition to being backed with one of the most powerful pirate fleets in the world. Their samurai, in particular, are powerful enough to kill a dragon in one hit, [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomp]] a top officer of the aforementioned pirate fleet, and in general, make the Marines not want anything to do with the country.
* {{Wutai}}: Wano is just one giant love letter to traditional Japanese culture and heritage. The country is heavily styled after feudal Japan, complete with samurai, ninjas, geishas, and the like. What natural beauty untouched by the ravages of Kaido resemble the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukiyo-e Ukiyo-e]] genre of Japanese art with gorgeous locations looking like they came straight out of Japanese woodblock prints and paintings. This aesthetic also is prevalent in varying degrees in Wano's people such as Kin'emon and the country's fauna. * DespairEventHorizon: Kozuki supporters imprisoned in Udon have had their spirit beaten out of them, that they willingly restrain Luffy despite rooting for him as they believe they no longer have any hope left even if they break out. Luckily, Luffy breaks them out of this.
* EdibleThemeNaming: Certain names within the Kozuki clan are named after food. Kozuki Oden and his father, Kozuki Sukiyaki are named after Japanese soup dishes, [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oden Oden]] and [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukiyaki Sukiyaki]] respectively. With the various allusions to [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Momotar%C5%8D Momotarō]], Kozuki Momosuke is obviously named after the titular hero whose name translates to "Peach Boy". The family name, Kozuki means moonlight but if the "o" sound is shortened, it can mean red bean. The Akazaya Nine that serves the family is called Akazaya in the original Japanese, which roughly means red scabbard/sheath. However, there is also a type of food called Akazaya Mochi, which is a red bean paste in baked mochi.

The Kozuki clan is made out to be villains of the land with schools teaching their students that them trying to open the gates to foreigners was a heinous act and that Orochi is considered a "hero" for stopping them. * LostLanguage: [[spoiler:The Kozuki Clan passed down knowledge of the ancient letters on the Poneglyphs from generation to generation unbeknownst to the World Government because of Wano's isolation. Unfortunately, Oden was murdered by Kaido and Orochi before he could pass down his knowledge to Momonosuke, leaving Robin as the last person alive capable of reading the Poneglyphs.]]
* OurGhostsAreDifferent: Subverted. When Luffy joins Law in Wano, the latter shows him the Kozuki Family and its servants' graves and explains they can only come out once the sun is set. The previous Daimyo of the Kuri region in the Land of Wano and Momonosuke's father. He was also a former member of the Whitebeard Pirates and, later, the Roger Pirates. Oden was a carefree man who couldn't stand the strict rules of Wano and, despite having the best intentions, tended to cause troubles with his unorthodox methods. He was murdered by the Shogun Orochi, who had allied with Kaido.

* ZeroPercentApprovalRating: In his young days, before attaining OneHundredPercentAdorationRating, he was a complete ''nightmare'' to his family and the citizens of Wano, not so much out of malice but his totally carefree and reckless lifestyle- running up gambling debts, accidentally causing a flood, eating people out of house and home, constantly trying to sail away and failing due to being a terrible navigator, always getting into fights, etc. PlayedWith in that many secretly admired him because of his carefree nature but had Wano's traditions so ingrained in their minds that they didn't have the guts to admit it.
* OneHundredPercentAdorationRating: He was such a good shogun that he used to be so adored by the residents of Kuri that Kuri Castle was called Oden Castle by the residents. Unfortunately, twenty years of MaliciousSlander and propaganda threw that reputation down the crapper. However, the people who have lived under Oden's rule still fondly remember him. During his absence, his wife helped everyone keep faith in him. If it wasn't for her, his reputation would plummeted much sooner.
* AnimeHair: His hair has a round flat top resembling a huge mushroom, fittingly as shiitake are used in Oden.
* AsskickingEqualsAuthority: He tamed Kuri by challenging Ashura Doji and his gang alone and won against all of them.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Was the beloved Daimyo of the Kuri region and such a skilled fighter that he managed to put a permanent scar on ''[[WorldsStrongestMan Kaido]]''.
* AwesomenessIsAForce: He's a user of Conqueror's Haki, made evident by his clash with Whitebeard, another Conqueror's Haki user.
* BigOlEyebrows: His rough face had a pair of big and expressive brows.
* BrilliantButLazy: In his youth, the man had great strength and was not as dumb as he looked like, as the incident with the "God of the Mountain" showcased. But Oden preferred to go at his own pace and not exactly trying to be in a position of authority despite knowing his father wanted him to succeed him. The first chance he got, he abandoned his duties to Wano to go travel the world with Whitebeard. Even when he was on Whitebeard's crew, when Whitebeard decided to start division commanders and he was suggested for a position, Oden wasn't exactly thrilled at the notion and had to be forced into taking it
* BeyondTheImpossible: His scarring of Kaido was described as such InUniverse and out.
* BloodKnight: He loved getting into fights, he even took on anyone who tried to kill him over his kidnapping of girls for his harem.
* BodyHorror: A rare PlayedForLaughs example. After enduring for three days, tied to a rope into the sea, he emerged with is body swollen to ridiculous proportions ([[RealityEnsues the result of having absorbed a lot of water]]) and scared away some slave traders.
* CallToAdventure: Oden invoked this on himself. Oden had always wanted to leave Wano and see the world outside and, upon learning about the arrival of a pirate crew (Whitebeard's), he immediately asked to join them. Whitebeard refused, but Oden secretly followed them when they sailed, and Oden's determination and honor convinced Whitebeard to make Oden part of the crew. Oden then narrated his epic adventure across the world with the Whitebeard Pirates, and later the Roger Pirates, in a diary.
* CatchPhrase: "This is too cramped!", which would often mark another effort to improve the region, especially regarding its isolationism.
* ChickMagnet: Oden was very charismatic and good looking and, when he was fifteen, he kidnapped a bunch of women for his harem. Said women could leave whenever they wanted, but simply wanted to remain with him.
* ChivalrousPervert: When he was 15, he took over a mountain temple (threatening the High Priest) and started kidnapping beautiful women from the capital to form his personal, giant harem. All the women apparently found him irresistible and stayed with him despite being free to leave.
* CoolSword: He has ''two'' of them, both of which are of Great Grade. One of the famous swords he wielded is Enma, which he wielded to gave Kaido his one and only scar, is said to be able to cut through the bottom of hell. It was inherited by Hiyori before being passed down to Zoro in exchange for the return of Shuusui to the Land of Wano. It's also a HungryWeapon which would ''drain'' your Haki with each slash. You have to be a MasterSwordsman of the highest caliber just to ''wield'' it. The other sword is Ameno Habakiri, crafted by Tenguyama Hitetsu, which is said to powerful enough to cut even the heavens, which is to be bequeathed to his son Momonosuke.
* DesecratingTheDead: Played with. He's introduced eating oden using the burned corpse of a man to heat the meal which was disrespectful from the point of view of the dead's family, but for Oden, it was a way to send off his deceased friend, by having one last meal with him.
* {{Determinator}}: When he asked Whitebeard to let him join his crew, Whitebeard initially didn't want him to upon learning he was next in line to be a Shogun and tried to leave quietly. Oden figured he would and managed to snag his ship with a rope just as the ship was headed for the falls, dragging him behind. Despite his vassal objections to pulling him aboard, Whitebeard instead issued a challenge to Oden: Hang onto the rope for three days. If he could endure, Whitebeard would allow him to join the crew. Oden actually managed for two days and came very close on the third but let go ten minutes shy of the three days to follow a woman's pledge for help. Regardless Whitebeard understood Oden let go because of his desire to help and allowed him on board.
* DestructiveSaviour: He wanted to help others, but his methods often brought more problems. For instance, his father said Oden once tried to help out a region that was experiencing a drought by redirecting a river and caused a flood as a result.
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: He was the only one to have left a permanent scar on Kaido, who has otherwise survived any execution attempt.
* DirtyKid: Exaggerated. He had been frequenting the red light district and spending lots of money there since he was six years old. He didn't lose his perverted personality [[HormoneAddledTeenager as a teenager]]: at sixteen years old, he kidnapped many women and brought them to a temple as part of his harem.
* DisappearedDad: To his children, Momonosuke and Hiyori, having given his life to protect them from Kaido.
* DualWielding: He was a “Daitō Nitōryū” user, using two longswords of Great Grade in combat. He was strong enough to cut a giant boar in half with a single hit.
* DueToTheDead: He's introduced paying respect to an old friend of his... [[RefugeInAudacity cooking and eating a whole pot of Oden on his funeral pyre]] and toasting at him. At least he does apologize to the traumatized family.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: During his official introduction in Chapter 960, Oden is first mentioned as wracking up numerous crimes before he even turned 20 and is first seen ''cooking a hot pot over a comrade's bones''. While this seems to establish him as a real {{Jerkass}}, Oden finishes the meal and thanks his friend for the hospitality, and it becomes clear to the audience that Oden wasn't doing this to disrespect his fallen comrade, but to rather honor him with one last meal. This establishes Oden as both a JerkWithAHeartOfGold and someone who doesn't care at all what other people think of him, which ultimately leads him to be insensitive. In short, this scene summed up what has been said about Oden: he has good intentions and a complete disregard for consequences or social norms that led him being disliked.
* EvilOverlord: Subverted. As a young man, he was described as wild and often caused violent problems, so much that they kicked him out from the capital. From there, he went to the most lawless area of the land, united all the outlaws under his banner and... turned the area into a veritable paradise of the land.
* TheFaceless: His face prior to his own flashback is continuously kept in shadow likely to give his first true introduction as much impact as possible.
* FantasticRacism: Averted. When the young Dogstorm, Cat Viper and Kawamatsu were about to be burned at the stakes, he did not share his subjects' prejudice against them and instead admonished them for their treatment of the trio. This played a big part in the three's loyalty to him.
* FluffyTamer: After cutting in half the Kaiju-like Mountain God (now sporting [[AmusingInjuries visible stiches]], he also tamed him and his child, the latter of which he used to carry his palanquin.
* GeniusBruiser: He's primarily a fighter, yet he's also smart enough to [[spoiler:learn the ancient script of the Poneglyphs despite having no need for the skill.]]
* GooGooGodlike: As a toddler, he had already shown absurd feats of strength, like hurling his wet-nurse across the room when he ''was one-year-old'' and killing a bear by hurling a boulder at it when he was four. Big Mom was seeing doing similar feats at five years of age and she was already giant-sized. Oden only avoids being an EnfanteTerrible by the fact that he generally means well, even if he can be insensitive.
* HappilyMarried: With Toki. Despite having the possibility to have a harem all for himself, he decided to marry her and is said it was a loving marriage.
* HistoricalVillainUpgrade: InUniverse example. Oden in life was a good man, despite being rather rough around the edges. Twenty years later, Orochi's propaganda has changed his image from the beloved daimyo of Kuri to the villain who nearly destroyed Wano by opening its borders to the world.
* HonorBeforeReason: After Oden tried to follow the Whitebeard Pirates, Whitebeard offered him a challenge: to remain tied to the rope, in the sea, for three entire days. If he had won, Oden could've joined the crew. Only a few minutes from the end of the three days, however, Oden left the rope and gave up the challenge to follow a woman's cry for help. This choice impressed Whitebeard enough for him to let Oden join the crew anyway.
* HungryWeapon: His Meitou Enma is a sword of the highest quality, but also eats up your Haki whenever is used, to the point of unnaturally withering your arm with each slash. The user needs to possess an iron will to tame the weapon and have it return your Haki and arm back to normal. Even [[PraetorianGuard a badass like Kin'emon]] remarks that he'd rather not wield the blade. Oden, however, was strong enough to wield it.
* ImprobableAge: Before he's properly introduced, a servant makes a ListOfTransgressions which chronicles his infamous activities since he was ''barely 1 year old''. Among various things, he killed a bear with a thrown boulder at 4, visited the red light district at 6, took up drinking at 8, [[TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior burnt down a Yakuza casino at 9]] and worked in a quarry at 10. He was also famous for having united the outlaws and transformed the wildland of Kuri into a paradise ''before'' he reached 20 years old.
* LadyKillerInLove: When he was sixteen he had a harem of women, all of whom preferred him to their husbands, but after meeting Toki he fell in love with her and had two children.
* LargeHam: Oden was extremely energetic and boastful. His presence was impossible for anyone near him to ignore and left a mark (literally, often by destroying something) whenever he went.

The previous Daimyo of the Kuri region in the Land of Wano and Momonosuke's father. He was also a former member of the Whitebeard Pirates and, later, the Roger Pirates. Oden was a carefree man who couldn't stand the strict rules of Wano and, despite having the best intentions, tended to cause troubles with his unhortodox methods. He was murdered by the Shogun Orochi, who had allied with Kaido.

* ZeroPercentApprovalRating: In his young days, before attaining OneHundredPercentAdorationRating, he was a complete ''nightmare'' to his family and the citizens of Wano, not so much out of malice but his totally carefree and reckless lifestyle- running up gambling debts, accidentally causing a flood, eating people out of house and home, constantly trying to sail away and failing due to being a terrible navigator, always getting into fights etc. PlayedWith in that many secretly admired him because of his carefree nature but had Wano's traditions so ingrained in their minds that they didn't have the guts to admit it.

* BrilliantButLazy: In his youth, the man had great strength and was not as dumb as he looked as the incident with the "God of the Mountain" showcased. But Oden preferred to go at his own pace and not exactly trying to be in a position of authority despite knowing his father wanted him to succeed him. First chance he got, he abandoned his duties to Wano to go travel the world with Whitebeard. Even when he was on Whitebeard's crew, when Whitebeard decided to start division commanders and he was suggested for a position, Oden wasn't exactly thrilled at the notion and had to be forced into taking it

* CoolSword: He has ''two'' of them, both of which are of Great Grade. One of the famous sword he wielded is Enma, which he wielded to gave Kaido his one and only scar, is said to be able to cut through the bottom of hell. It was inherited by Hiyori before being passed down to Zoro in exchange for the return of Shuusui to the Land of Wano. It's also a HungryWeapon which would ''drain'' your Haki with each slash. You have to be a MasterSwordsman of the highest caliber just to ''wield'' it. The other sword is Ameno Habakiri, crafted by Tenguyama Hitetsu, which is said to powerful enough to cut even the heavens, which is to be bequeathed to his son Momonosuke.

* {{Determinator}}: When he asked Whitebeard to let him join his crew, Whitebeard initially didn't want him to upon learning he was next in line to be a Shogun and tried to leave quietly. Oden figured he would and managed to snag his ship with a rope just as the ship was headed for the falls, dragging him behind. Despite his vassal objections to pull him aboard, Whitebeard instead issued a challenge to Oden: Hang onto the rope for three days. If he could endure, Whitebeard would allow him to join the crew. Oden actually managed for two days and came very close on the third but let go ten minutes shy of the three days to follow a woman's pledge for help. Regardless Whitebeard understood Oden let go because of his desire to help and allowed him onboard.
* DestructiveSaviour: He wanted to help others, but his methods often brought more problem. For instance, his father said Oden once tried to help out a region that was experiencing a drought by redirecting a river and caused a flood as a result.

* FantasticRacism: Averted. When the young Dogstorm, Cat Viper and Kawamatsu were about to be burned at the stakes, he did not share his subjects' prejudice against them and instead admonished them for their treatment of the trio. This played a big part on the three's loyalty to him.

* GooGooGodlike: As a toddler he had already shown absurd feats of strength, like hurling his wet-nurse across the room when he ''was one-year-old'' and killing a bear by hurling a boulder at it when he was four. Big Mom was seeing doing similar feats at five years of age and she was already giant-sized. Oden only avoids being an EnfanteTerrible by the fact that he generally means well, even if he can be insensitive.
* HappilyMarried: With Toki. Despite having the possibility to have an harem all for himself, he decied to marry her and is said it was a loving marriage.

* ImprobableAge: Before he's properly introduced, a servant makes a ListOfTransgressions which chronicles his infamous activities since he was ''barely 1 year old''. Among various things, he killed a bear with a thrown boulder at 4, visited the red light district at 6, took up drinking at 8, [[TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior burnt down a Yakuza casino at 9]] and worked in a quarry at 10. He was also famous for having united the outlaws and transformed the wild land of Kuri into a paradise ''before'' he reached 20 years old.
* LadyKillerInLove: When he was sixteen he had an harem of women, all of whom preferred him to their husbands, but after meeting Toki he fell in love with her and had two children.

* LeeroyJenkins: After being taken up into Whitebeard's crew he acted impulsively, mostly out of excitment to see new things, like running ahead of the rest into new strange islands and getting himself into trouble or sinking ships before they could be looted.
* LikeFatherLikeSon: He took a liking to the red light districts when he was 6, to the point that he exhausted his father's coffers on it, and at 15 his efforts to build a harem caused a war. Momonosuke's clearly his father's child.

* MaliciousSlander: When he was the shogun, he was beloved by anyone, but his name is all but cursed by the current generation of Wano citizens due to smear campaign perpetrated for 20 years. However, those who remembers his times still have a good opinion of him and his clan, but showing any sympathy toward him is illegal and would lead to being caught and imprisoned.
* MasterSwordsman: He tamed Kuri by his swordplay, defeating all of the outlaws that leaved there, including the infamous Ashura Dohji. He was strong enough to clash evenly with Whitebeard ''in his prime'' and leave a marking scar on Kaido. To prove it futher, he wielded Enma, a HungryWeapon that only a Master could even pick up without being killed.
* NoRegerts: When confronting Kaido and laughing at him for falling for his ruse to allow time to build up his forces by playing the fool via Orochi's wishes. Oden firmly states he doesn't have any regrets for his what he had to do if it kept his family, men and the citizen's safe.
* OneManArmy: Sliced a rampaging {{Kaiju}} boar singlehandedly and even challenged the bandit king Ashura Doji and his entire gang and stomped them all by himself over the course of a night. Once returned after his long journey, Oden learns of Orochi's rise to shogunate and how Toki got hurt, which angered Oden enough to rush toward the Flower Capital, defeating all of the palace guards. And once more during his battle against Kaido's men when he plow them many of them to get to Kaido himself. Even Kaido noted how fearsome he was and had to resort to trickery to bolster his forces to stand a chance against him.

* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: Upon returning to Wano after sailing with the Roger Pirates, he learns of Orochi's abuse of Wano, while that angered him enough what really got him was learning that Orochi was after his family and Toki took an arrow to the knee protecting her children. After which, he ''instantly'' grabbed his swords and made a beeline for the Flower Capital, throttling all the guards that stood in his way, kicked in the door to the throne room and rushed directly at the panicking Orochi, ignoring his pleas that Kaido won't take this attack lying down and major intent to kill. He was only prevented from doing so due to one of the Orochi's benefactors having the Barrier-Barrier Fruit at the time which he couldn't cut through and was forced to retreat.

* TakingTheHeat: After the "Montain God Incident" in which he defeated a giant white boar, everyone assumed he was responsible due to being seen with the boar's child. Kin'emon, the one who had really brought the infant boar to the Flower Capital, was perfectly willing to admit he was to blame, but Oden clonked him and allowed everyone to think he was responsible. This is what caused Kin'emon to become Oden's follower.

* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Oden's five years long absence allowed Orochi's rise to Shogunate and their country's enslavement and pollution by the Beast Pirates. Once he comes back, he regrets to have allowed his country to be ruined by Orochi's reign.
