A sinister alicorn mare who first appears at the end of the ''Make Your Mark'' special.

* AbusiveMom: Opaline is Misty's adoptive mother, having rescued (rather, kidnapped from her father) and raised her as a filly, but despite her claims to the contrary she is NOT nice to her AT ALL. Not only does Opaline prey on Misty's insecurities and desire for a Cutie Mark to secure her loyalty, but she constantly berates and belittles her for even the littlest mistakes or just for doing things she doesn't like, and has also lied to her about the origins of Equestria. On the very few occasions that Opaline does praise Misty, there is no warmth behind it. The result is that Misty is a nervous, emotionally stunted wreck who desperately craves Opaline's approval, but is utterly terrified of displeasing her and is deeply hurt by her coldness.

* AncientEvil: She's been around since the days of peace in Equestria during Twilight's reign. In fact, she's the one who ''caused'' the social divide between ponies in the first place. This is taken ''much'' further when it's revealed she shared childhoods with Celestia and Luna.

* BadBoss: Opaline's assistant and adoptive daughter, Misty, is visibly intimidated by her, and for good reason. Not only is Opaline an extremely powerful and evil villain, but she constantly abuses Misty emotionally and verbally.

** Opaline claims to have rescued and raised Misty out of kindness, but considering the appalling way she treats Misty, it is likely she just needed or wanted a servant.

* BelievingTheirOwnLies: She seems to honestly believe that Misty was her "friend" even after all the times she abused and belittled her.
* BigBad: She's the main antagonist of Generation 5, being a sinister alicorn who intends to take over the world and causes problems for the Mane 5 behind the scenes.
* BrightIsNotGood: While first seen in dimly lit areas, it is later revealed that in the light, her body appears very bright and colorful. When she absorbs magic, her wings and horn glow with a fiery, purple-white aura.
* CardCarryingVillain: Opaline refers to her own EvilLaugh as a "maniacal laugh". She also reveals to herself as "evil", "wicked", and "villainous" in her VillainSong, and blatantly calls her own goals "selfish".
* CharacterShilling: Twilight Sparkle's recording and Spike state Opaline was such a threat they [[GodzillaThreshold had to seal away Equestria's magic to keep it out of her hooves]], and Misty states Opaline's cunning and unpredictable. While Misty might be justified by being raised by them given a skewed perspective, Opaline's ability to live up to that [[InformedAbility has been subpar]].

* ContrastingSequelAntagonist: The {{Big Bad}}s of ''Friendship is Magic'' tended to appear at the start or end of a season, with their schemes being self-contained and having little bearing on other episodes (Season 9 being the only exception due to a LegionOfDoom scenario). In contrast, Opaline is a recurring character (appearing in every episode of Chapter Two of ''Make Your Mark''), with her desire to regain her power and conquer Equestria being an ongoing goal for her, and setting up the conflicts of several episodes. And while most of the major villains of ''FIM'' were quick to make themselves known to the heroes, the Mane Five only had a vague knowledge of Opaline's existence (due to Twilight Sparkle's warning message glitching out as she was about to name the villainous Alicorn she clashed with), with Opaline herself preferring to stay in the shadows until she regains her power.
* TheCorruptor: She attempts to be this to Sunny in "Ali-Conned", posing as Sunny's conscience through the compact to convince her to embrace being an alicorn and the idea that it makes her better than other ponies, hoping to turn Sunny into an ally. All it does is remind Sunny that other ponies only care about her when she's an alicorn, and further strengthens her bond with her friends, who care about her as an individual.

In ''Tell Your Tale'', Sparky is absent and the ponies' Unity Magic is what turns the Together Tree against her, steal her mark, and drag her into its trunk. In ''Make Your Mark'', the ponies' Unity Magic powers Sunny's locket to trap Opaline long enough for Sparky to take back the Dragonstone and turn the Together Tree against her. The Together Tree also ''only'' takes her mark and uses it to lure her to its trunk to trap her. Her reactions upon her defeat also differ, as in ''Tell Your Tale'', Opaline [[DefiantToTheEnd defiantly claims that "This [wasn't] over" as she is dragged into the trunk]], while in ''Make Your Mark'', she desperately chases her stolen cutie mark into the trunk and lets out a BigNo when she realizes that she's about to be sealed in.
* DisproportionateRetribution: In "Sunny Side Up" Opaline claims that Princess Celestia and Princess Luna dismissed her when she tried to be their friend. Opaline took such offense that she decided to dedicate herself to becoming a more powerful Alicorn than either of them.
* TheDreaded: Twilight Sparkle considered her a big enough threat to not only place all the ponies' magic into the Unity Crystals (and embed a message warning future pony generations of Opaline's menace within the crystals), but also create a barrier around Equestria to hide it from Opaline's view.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: In "Nightmare on Mane Street", she finds a way around the barrier Twilight formed around Equestria, arriving in Maretime Bay. But since she did so during Nightmare Night, everypony thinks she's simply wearing an alicorn costume and putting on a show of villainy (to her deep annoyance).
* EntitledBitch: The end of the special has her claim that now that magic has returned, it's time to "take back what is mine", implying she feels she's entitled to magic itself. She also makes it very clear that she believes that alicorns are inherently better than normal ponies and should be the ''only'' wielders of powerful magic. Opaline also fully expects Misty to do anything for her.
* EvilBrit: She has a light Mid-Atlantic accent in a similar manner to Rarity's.

** She gifts Sunny with a magic compact mirror that transmits back to her castle, only to be annoyed that Sunny barely uses it, having assumed Sunny to be as vain as herself.
** In "Ali-Conned", she fails to comprehend why Sunny doesn't want to stay in Alicorn form. She is also nonplussed to hear that her "wildest dream" is a community garden.
** In "Roots of All Evil", she believed making friends included brainwashing and/or kidnapping others and this was why her Together Tree wouldn't grow properly and be as powerful as the other trees.
* EvilCounterpart:
** To Sunny Starscout. Both are ponies who eventually became alicorns and have knowledge of ancient Equestria. However, she is a prejudiced, greedy, manipulative mare who broke the three pony kinds apart in a quest for power eventually ending up mostly [[DePower powerless]], alone, with almost nothing she wanted, whereas Sunny is a kind, open-minded pony who brought the three pony kinds together again, was granted great power for her noble deeds, has a plentiful amount of friends, and has just about everything she needs.
** To Twilight Sparkle. Both are Alicorns, but while Twilight never asked to rule, and treated others as equals, and did her best to be a good queen, Opaline believes she deserves to rule Equestria and sees the other kinds of ponies as beneath her, and attempted to rule as a dictator.
* EvilEyebrows: Like with Sprout when he was a villain, though hers are thinner and not as pronounced.
* EvilHasABadSenseOfHumor: "Opaline Alone" has her in hysterics over Sunny's banana peel video that she keeps replaying for all the wrong reasons.
* EvilIsBigger: As with most alicorns, she is noticeably larger than most ponies. Even in flashbacks to ancient Equestria, back when she was an unicorn, she is already shown to have towered over other ponies.
* EvilIsHammy: Incredibly evil and incredibly dramatic in her intonations.
* EvilIsNotWellLit: Her debut scene is set inside a dark castle room. Appropriately, she is credited as "Shadowy Alicorn". In flashbacks to ancient Equestria in the second issue of the G5 comics, her body is entirely [[SinisterSilhouettes hidden in shadow]].
* EvilLaugh:
** Her laugh makes it pretty clear that she is ObviouslyEvil.
** She goes into another one alongside her minion Misty but gets annoyed that Misty isn't laughing in synch with her.
* ExcessiveEvilEyeshadow: Has silver glitter eyeshadow that highlights her vanity.
* TheExile: According to Spike, Opaline was banished from Skyros; her alicorn homeland.
* FreudianExcuse: She claims to have one, but even if it is real, it is ridiculously petty. As a filly growing up in Skyros, Opaline was overshadowed by Celestia and Luna, who supposedly ignored her when she tried to befriend them. This led Opaline to vow to become more powerful than anypony else, so that she would never be underestimated again.
* FreudianExcuseDenial: In "Roots of All Evil Pt. 2", Misty and Sunny accuse Opaline of being evil [[IJustWantToHaveFriends due to never having friends and the real reason she wanted power was to force others to be hers]], she rebuffs those attempts to reach out to her. Notably when she gives a {{Flashback}} claiming her FreudianExcuse was Celestia and Luna being favored over her, what's shown make it look like it was jealousy of the their friendship and them ignoring her.
* GaveUpTooSoon: Many of Opaline's plans to try and steal the Crystal Brighthouse's magic would succeed if she were patient enough to learn from her failures rather than immediately switch to a new plan. For example, when she sends Misty to [[Recap/MyLittlePonyMakeYourMarkS2E6TheTraditionalUnicornSleepOver steal the Hope Lantern from the Crystal Brighthouse]], Misty only fails because she buried the Lantern in the yard overnight and Pipp found it in the morning first, rather than heading straight to Opaline. Instead of just having Misty try again, since Misty was never revealed as the thief, she decides to target Sparky and steal ''his'' magic so she'll be strong enough to steal the Lantern herself.
* GodSaveUsFromTheQueen: Unlike every other alicorn in the franchise, who were called princesses no matter their actual duties specifically because of this trope, she envisions herself as a tyrannical queen over all ponykind.
* GreaterScopeVillain: She is revealed to have been responsible for starting a racial divide in the past, prompting Twilight to create the Unity Crystals to try and stabilize harmony. After tensions soured over time and the crystals were separated, magic was removed from Equestria completely. This retroactively makes her the overarching villain of the G5, since she caused all the ponies to lose their magic in the first place.
* GreenAndMean: She has a part-green mane and is an evil villain.

** Her overarching motivation is revealed to be petty childhood jealousy towards Celestia and Luna, who "stole her spotlight" with their sun and moon spectacle.

* HiddenVillain: Aside from a garbled warning made by Twilight Sparkle, none of the Main Five were even aware of Opaline's existence until the end of Chapter 4.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: The end of the special has her claim that now that magic has returned, it's time to take back what belongs to her, implying that she feels entitled to magic. However, she's also the one who started the racial tensions between the pony races centuries ago, which would eventually lead to the magic being sealed away and her being banished from its magic.
** The Together Tree that she planted ends up being what ultimately defeats her, by acting as a conduit for Equestria's friendship magic to unlock Sunny's locket, before taking her cutie mark and sealing her away.
* HornsOfVillainy: Aside from her alicorn horn, her ears are so long and pointed that they look like additional horns. This is particularly noticeable in [[ComicBook/MyLittlePony2022 the second issue of the comics]], where we see her in ancient Equestria with her body completely hidden in silhouette.
* IcyBlueEyes: She has blue eyes and is a villainous Alicorn. Her debut at the end of ''Make Your Mark'' even ends with a close-up of her left eye.
* ILied: She strings Misty along with the promise of a Cutie Mark. Even assuming it to be within her power (she can at least steal Cutie Marks and transfer them to other objects), her attitude makes it clear she could care less about actually following through. She later outright admits in Chapter 5 that she never intended to give Misty a Cutie Mark.
* IneffectualLoner: Her attempt to retrieve the Dragonstone in "Sunny Side Up" showcases exactly why Twilight needed to embrace of the Magic of Friendship during her tenure. All alone, Opaline is forced to rely on her limited amounts of magic power to blast her way up the mountain where the artifact is being held, not even being able to lift herself off the ground due to her lack of virtue. The Dragonstone falls into a crevice that she can't reach and she is forced to go return to her castle empty handed. A FetchQuest tends to go easier when you have a group of friends backing you up to thwart any otherwise avoidable/dangerous phenomena that may come about. While she does obtain the stone in the following episode, she possibly wouldn't have had all that trouble if she had had the help.
* InformedAbility:
** Twilight Sparkle's recording and Spike state Opaline [[TheDreaded was so dangerous]], she had to seal away all of Equestria's magic and hide the land away to stop her. But Opaline's ability to [[ManaDrain steal magic]] that made her such a threat is identical to Lord Tirek's, failed to show his and other villains' competence, and like him at the [[NearVillainVictory peak of her power]], she was defeated by friendship magic. Also the heroes, with only a fraction of the experience or power Twilight had, put up good fights [[CurbStompCushion even when losing due to Opaline being near-peak power]]. So, while a legitimate threat, Opaline fell short of showing herself to be so much more threatening than prior villains Twilight defeated to warrant [[GodzillaThreshold such drastic measures]] to stop.
** The comics had Discord recount her as such an effective {{manipulat|ive Bitch}}or she was able turn the pony tribes racist against each other during the golden age of harmony. But it was near-identical to what the villains pulled in the ''[=FiM=]'' finale and the lessons that let the tribes see through it in time would be more widespread, making [[TakeOurWordForIt its apparent effectiveness]] come off as contrivance rather than her manipulative skill, which in the show was sub-par (completely failing to manipulate Sunny, only succeeding with Misty due to her being a sheltered child who she quickly lost influence over, and Opaline herself being frequently tricked).
* ItsAllAboutMe: Her treatment of Misty makes it pretty clear that she only cares about herself. The story she told Misty about the separation of ponykind -- that ponies selfishly hoarded the magic that was rightfully hers before the "evil" Twilight Sparkle sealed it away -- is similarly [[SelfServingMemory self-serving]].
* {{Jerkass}}: She is racist toward Pegasi and Earth Ponies, ''Sunny Starscout's Book of Adventure'' stating she doesn't think better of unicorns. She treats Misty awfully, no matter how nice the poor kid is to her. In "Nightmare Night Party", she also states she enjoys ruining parties.
* KickTheDog:
** Opaline's general mistreatment of Misty. Special mention goes to destroying her smoothie and telling her that she will never be enough until she delivers Sparky, even after Misty managed to deliver some dragon fire.
** She [[WouldHurtAChild intended to kill Sparky]] by letting him fall to his death from her tower after draining him, meaning it was unnecessary for her goal of regaining her powers, simply out of spite for the times he's interfered with her plans.
* KnightOfCerebus: Downplayed, but still present. Opaline does have some comical moments due to her tendency to start ChewingTheScenery, but she is the evilest, most frightening, and most dangerous character introduced in G5 so far. Her mistreatment of Misty is a disturbingly realistic portrayal of ParentalAbuse, and she is an out-and-out ''[[PhysicalGoddess alicorn]]'' who has [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld lived long enough]] to have met Twilight Sparkle, who, despite having defeated many dangerous villains before, deemed Opaline such a severe threat to Equestria that she locked away all of its magic.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Sparky uses the Dragonstone to strip Opaline of her stolen magic, both pony and dragon, and purifies her corrupted Together Tree. The tree also becomes her new prison after it strips her of her Cutie Mark, forcing her to chase after it, before dragging it deep into its core, where she'll never be able to reach it, then sealing the doorway behind her.
* LaughablyEvil: She's constantly cracking jokes and making evil laughs, and lampshading how evil she is. She's also quite dumb and oblivious.
* LongLived: As first revealed in the comics, she was around during the reign of Twilight Sparkle. She is still alive in present Equestria. This is somewhat confirmed in the show, where she says that alicorns are actually immortal. She also grew up alongside Luna and Celestia who themselves were implied to be well over a thousand years old when Twilight was still young.
* ManipulativeBitch: Opaline is this to everyone she meets. In the past, she manipulated ponies into turning on each other, and in the present, she tries to turn Sunny evil and has also deceived her adoptive daughter Misty into believing lies about Equestria and that she can be given a cutie mark. It's implied by Discord in the comics that she was able to turn all three tribes against each other in Ancient Equestria by spreading bad rumors and psychological warfare that even Equestria's then-heroes were unable to dispel.
* MeaningfulName: Opaline means to be opalescent, i.e, of varying colors. She becomes very bright and colorful in the light.
* MindControl: She can cast a brainwashing spell on her captives to force them to do her bidding.
* MultipleChoicePast: The 2022 comics show she was born a unicorn (but her appearance was obscured enough she could have been hiding being an alicorn), while ''Make Your Mark'' shows her as being an alicorn when Celestia and Luna were young long before that. Note that both accounts come from {{Unreliable Expositor}}s.
* MysteriousPast: Nothing concrete is known about Opaline's past beyond that she somehow was such a threat Twilight was forced to seal magic in the Unity Crystals and create an invisibility barrier to keep her from acquiring it. What little is given is [[MultipleChoicePast seemingly contradictory]] or raises more questions than it answers. "Nightmare on Mane Street" reveals that she somehow created a Together Tree, which form when ponies join together in harmony, although the present Opaline strongly opposes such. "The Isle of Scaly" reveals that she was banished from her homeland, Skyros, but the reasons why are never stated.
* NearVillainVictory:
** In her message, Twilight mentions Opaline nearly succeeded in stealing all the magic in Equestria before she was stopped.
** She's close to victory yet again in the "Roots of All Evil" two-parter, having stolen the Cutie Marks of every pony in Equestria, had Spike under her control, and stripped Sunny of her Alicorn Powers.
* NeverMyFault: In the TYT short "Ponykind Parade-emonium", she has Misty use "Blazeberries" to drive the critters of Maretime Bay into a frenzy. When Misty is targeted by one of these critters and asks for help, Opaline scoffs that this is ''Misty's'' mess.
* NoNameGiven: She is left nameless in her debut, simply credited as "Shadowy Alicorn". Her true name is first given in promotional material revealing an updated map of Generation 5 Equestria, which includes the location of her castle, referred to as "Opaline's dark castle".
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: A downplayed example. Her horn is more curved than the other unicorns/alicorns we've seen, marking her as someone from Mistmane's region or someone using dark magic like Sombra's (an umbrum according to the comics). Though it may be because she's a different type of alicorn entirely, as Misty describes Opaline to be someone "made of fire" in ''Make Your Mark'' and Opaline herself boasts that dragon fire would make her "the most powerful '''fire alicorn''' of all time" in ''[[WebAnimation/MyLittlePonyTellYourTale Tell Your Tale]]''.
* NoSocialSkills: Unsurprisingly, when an ancient race elitist goes out in public for the first time in thousands of years, she proves to be very out-of-touch, thinking Nightmare Night costumes are indicative of Equestrian fashion and demanding everyone fear her.
* NotSoAboveItAll: In "Under The Mistytoe", it is shown that she secretly likes dressing up for Wishing Day and singing songs. "Opaline Alone" takes this up to eleven, showing her playing with dolls, watching and laughing at Sunny's My Bananas video and trying and failing to give herself a hooficure based on a tutorial video from Jazz among other things.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: In "Roots of All Evil Part 2", she claims that she and Sunny are similar, due to them both seeking magical knowledge and keeping certain magical artifacts in their possession.
* ObviouslyEvil: Lurking in a dark, shadowy throne room while observing the heroes from afar and laughing maniacally while boasting about taking back what is yours clearly shows you're evil.
* OnlyFriend: She calls herself this to Misty during "Hoof Done It". [[BadBoss Considering how she usually treats her]], it's clear she's either lying or trying to manipulate the unicorn.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: Even in her diminished state, Opaline is by demonstration still one of the most powerful spellcasters alive, certainly far above anyone in Maretime Bay. Despite this, she's unwilling to directly confront the heroes until she's been restored to her full power, leaving such schemes to Misty. ''Tell Your Tale'' has her unable to even cast enough magic to scare away a raccoon unicorn, making her reluctance to personally act more understandable. She starts to subvert it in Chapter 4, after getting tired of Misty's failures, and throws it off completely once she regains her power by draining Sparky. Chapter 5 shows that she's unable to even enter Equestria thanks to Twilight's cloaking barrier, despite the fact that ponies can come to and from her castle at will, explaining why she can't confront the heroes unless they come to her. She relies on Misty because, for the most part, she has no other choice. Lampshaded by herself when she finally gets off her ass to go retrieve the Dragonstone herself.

* BrokenPedestal: The pegasi of Zephyr Heights were despondent at having lost the ability to fly and looked up to the royal family for still being able to, clinging onto them as their one sliver of hope. Then it is revealed they faked flying via wires and lighting tricks. This sparks an immediate revolution and Haven's arrest.
* FakeWizardry: The royal family of Zephyr Heights uses wires and strategic lighting to make it appear as if they can still fly, all to provide a small sliver of hope for the grounded pegasi.

Home of the earth ponies, Maretime Bay is a peaceful seaside town whose residents are nevertheless living in constant fear of the unicorns and the pegasi, something which the local main business Canterlogic exploited to sell their anti-unicorn/pegasus defense products. After the events of the first movie, a number of pegasi and unicorns begin to move into the town, although relationships between them and the earth ponies aren't always ideal.

* CrapolaTech: [=CanterLogic's=] protection gear has obviously never been field tested. For one, most of it is for protection from things the earth ponies ''think'' the unicorns and pegasi can do, not for things they can actually do. The first time any of it is used in a real "invasion" -- that is, Izzy just walking casually into town -- the safety tech either does nothing at all or backfires on the citizens. This contrasts with the pegasi having tech analogous to the real world -- cell phones, biometric scanners, etc. -- that works precisely as it's supposed to. Needless to say, [[spoiler:by Chapter 4 the company has been dissolved and the factory is abandoned, and seemingly has been for quite a while]].
* TheDictatorship: In ''A New Generation'', after Sunny and Hitch leave, [[spoiler:Sprout becomes a rabble-rousing dictator and turns Maretime Bay into a miniature military dictatorship under himself]].
