The page was not that crowded, but the series does have many characters, and it is better to be prepared for that.

!Main Characters
[[folder: Sultan Süleyman Khan]]
!![[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suleiman_the_Magnificent Sultan Süleyman Khan]]
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/magnificentcentury_sultansleyman.jpg]]
[-(Played by Halit Ergenç)-]\\
[-(Voiced by René Sagastume and Andrés Skoknic [Latin American Spanish dub])-]\\
Sultan Süleyman is the 10th sultan of the Ottoman Empire.
* BadassBeard: His beard grows with age, as does his badassery.
* GoodParents: At least before the PrincelingRivalry began, Süleyman was a nurturing father who sought to educate his children well.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With İbrahim. He calls him [[BloodBrothers his brother]].
* HeroesWantRedheads: Since everyone else is Turkish, Hürrem's red hair is a sign that she's European--exotic, and thereby sexy.
* HistoricalHeroUpgrade: The only person who's above all the endless intrigues and backstabbing, and who's unambiguously honest, is probably Süleyman himself.
* TheMagnificent: Süleyman the Magnificent, in Turkish ''Muhteşem Süleyman'', which is where the show's name comes from.
* TheParanoiac: Sultan sees others' mistakes as (often) almost unforgivable treason. For example, when [[spoiler: Nasuh]] hides some facts about Sultan's sons since he didn't think they were of great importance (but could have angered Sultan anyway), Sultan sends him off of the palace, even though he was one of his most trusted servants he ever had. Another example can be his reaction to a fabricated letter that was to 'confirm' Mustafa's vile intents. Sultan always feared Mustafa would overthrow him (for no good reason) and instead of at least having a talk with Mustafa, he decides to [[spoiler: have him strangled]]. And of course let's not forget about [[spoiler:Ibrahim]]--Sultan thought he tried to usurp power due to his pride, so, despite [[spoiler: Ibrahim being his best friend]] he orders to [[spoiler: have him strangled]]. It turned out later, however, that [[spoiler:all his fears and suspicions were him being paranoid--Sultan got Ibrahim's diary which read that Ibrahim admired Sultan and it was strongly implied he would never act against Sultan]]

[[folder: Hürrem Sultan]]
!![[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurrem_Haseki_Sultan Aleksandra aka Roxelana aka Hürrem Sultan]]
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/magnificentcentury_hrremsultan.jpg]]
[-(Played by Meryem Uzerli & Vahide Perçin)-]\\
[-(Voiced by: Noelia Socolovsky [Latin American Spanish dub])-]\\
Süleyman's second wife and favorite, Aleksandra aka Roxelana aka Hürrem is a Crimean girl who comes to the harem a slave, kidnapped in a raid that killed her family. In the harem, she rises to great heights after she catches his attention, and more so after she has a son.
* AntiHero: She's not above killing her political opponents, though she sometimes shows some remorse later [[spoiler:(like after Mustafa's death).]]
* CharacterDevelopment: At the beginning of the show she's quite naive, bratty and very impulsive. In later seasons she grows more ladylike, but also more ruthless, calculating and wiser in political game.
* ConvertingForLove: She converts to Islam after Sümbül Ağa tells her Süleyman will never marry a Christian.
* EasilyForgiven: Süleyman himself [[LampshadeHanging is quite aware]] that he lets her get away with things that would get any other person executed, simply because he loves her that much.
* FakePregnancy: Her first time. She claims to be pregnant to prevent being sent away and married off. [[spoiler:An AccidentalTruth--she actually ''was'' pregnant with her firstborn, Mehmet, at the time, though she didn't know yet.]]
* FieryRedhead: She first appears as a captive on a slave ship, and even there she is unbroken and defiant.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: She was a peasant more in her hometown, but after being captured she has to fight for her life.
* LadyInRed: Hürrem wears more red than any other character.
* LaserGuidedKarma: [[spoiler:Soon after she finally manages to gets Mustafa executed, her youngest son Cihangir dies of grief after his brother's death]].
* MamaBear: Hurrem isnt exactly morally upstanding, but she adores her children and goes ballistic if anyone threatens them. Her chief goal is to make one of her sons the next sultan- because, according to Ottoman law, if it's their half-brother Mustafa who ascends the throne, he's got the right to strangle all his brothers to avoid civil war in future. (Though with the show's portrayal of Mustafa, it's quite clear he wouldn't do that. His mother, Mahidevran, on the other hand...)
* ManipulativeBastard: She relies on manipulating people around her to survive.
* MeaningfulRename: Named Aleksandra at birth, Süleyman gives her the name Hürrem when she becomes a favorite. It means "joy"--that she's his joy.
* MeetCute: Completely planned on her part, playing the {{Adorkable}} card in order to catch the Sultan's eye.
* RagsToRoyalty, Cinderella style, played darker than usual.
* RedheadInGreen
* SensualSlavs: She begins her "career" in harem with seducing sultan. She's Ukrainian.
* {{Yandere}}: Mahidevran and Hürrem are both, almost equally, yanderes over Süleyman. Justified because their children's fates are on the line, but there's still a lot of petty jealousy involved too.

[[folder: Pargalı İbrahim Pasha]]
!![[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pargali_Ibrahim_Pasha Pargalı İbrahim Pasha]]
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/magnificentcentury_ibrahim.jpg]]
[-(Played by Okan Yalabık)-]
[-(Voiced by: Juan Manuel Echave [Latin American Spanish dub])-]\\
->''"I'm İbrahim, who was taken from Parga and was turned at the age of 10. What is it to be turned? Where does one turn to? Where is that place? Is it possible to turn back, or does destiny only point forward? Does the place you came from wait for you? Would you be able to see it? Would your heart be your compass? Would it be possible, to go back home by following your trails backwards? Or is one still seen only as a convert, in every place one has com from converted and changed, in every language and in every religion? Is conversion not an ability, but a necessity, İbrahim?"''

İbrahim is Süleyman's oldest friend, and right hand--grand vizier for much of the story. İbrahim was kidnapped from Parga as a child, and after gaining Süleyman's favor, he rose high when Süleyman became sultan.

* ArchEnemy: Hürrem loathes him with all her heart for putting her in a situation in which she has to be into a PsychoticLoveTriangle to save herself and her children, not to mention he put her and her ex-boyfriend into a situation in which one of them had to eat poison.
* AntiVillain: He is largely a corrupt man who will cross lines and cover things up, but he does love Süleyman and his family.
* BadassBeard: He always has had a beard that becomes thicker with time, and is a key leader of the military.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: İbrahim is actually pretty open about his past; in the WelcomeEpisode, he explains it all. Born in Parga, İbrahim was kidnapped at the age of 10. He very purposely made himself forget so it wouldn't haunt him.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Süleyman.
** Süleyman calls İbrahim [[BloodBrothers his brother]], and later they're BestFriendsInLaw.
** His friend
* LongLostRelative: Later, when he gets the chance to return to Parga as an adult, he finds his father and brother again.
* MistakenForCheating: With Prenses İsabella. He is very miffed when Hatice confronts him about it.
* NumberTwo: He's Süleyman's.
* PromotionNotPunishment: When Süleyman finds a love poem İbrahim wrote about Hatice, İbrahim think he's dead. But then he's made grand vizier.
* SuddenlyShouting: İbrahim is ''very'' prone to this.
* TakingTheBullet: He does this for Süleyman, with a throwing knife in an assassination attempt.
* YourCheatingHeart: He has an affair with [[spoiler:Nigar and impregnates her despite not truly loving her.]]

[[folder:Valide Sultan]]
!![[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hafsa_Sultan_(wife_of_Selim_I) Valide Sultan]]
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/magnificentcentury_validesultan.jpg]]
[-(Played by Nebahat Çehre)-]\\
[-(Voiced by: Luciana Falcón [Latin American Spanish dub])-]\\
Also of Crimean origin, the Valide Sultan is Süleyman's mother and by Ottoman tradition, effectively his queen. While Hürrem and Mahidevran are queens of a sort as well, they have very little power. The Valide Sultan completely rules the harem, and even wields some power outside it.

* AlphaBitch: Very rich, very proud, and ''no one'' should disobey her.
* AndIMustScream: At her final moments, [[spoiler:she becomes unable to speak]].
* DeathByDespair: After realizing [[spoiler:Ibrahim cheated on his wife with Nigar]] and attacking [[spoiler:Nigar]] angrily, [[spoiler:she enters in a catatonic condition and eventually dies]].
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: Her title is Valide Sultan, which in Turkish means "Queen Mother". She is almost ''always'' called by her title, though sometimes shortened to just Valide. In case you're wondering, her real name is Ayşe Hafsa.
* GrandmaWhatMassiveHotnessYouHave: She is ocassionally called "charming". [[spoiler:At deathbed]], Hatice praises her beauty.
* MyBelovedSmother: Completely allowed, and even expected under this system, though her son still get angry and tells her off for it sometimes.
** Hatice gets annoyed by her mother's overbearing tendencies too.
* UngratefulBastard: Daye always sought to protect the Valide Sultan and serve her, but that did not save Daye from being scapegoated in an attack to burn Hürrem's face. [[EveryoneHasStandards Even Hürrem was disgusted with this]].

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mahidevran Sultan]]
!![[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahidevran Mahidevran Sultan]]
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/magnificentcentury_mahidevransultan.jpg]]
[-(Played by Nur Fettahoğlu)-]\\
[-(Voiced by: Angélica Vargas [Latin American Spanish dub])-]\\
Süleyman's first wife and the mother of his eldest son, Mahidevran falls from favor after Süleyman becomes sultan and Hürrem arrives. Her abuse of Hürrem brings his wrath, and significantly hurries this process.

* DisposableFiance: Mahidevran was Süleyman's wife, but after he falls in love with Hürrem she becomes relegated. Mahidevran's attempts to attack Hürrem end up estranging even more her relationship with Süleyman, to the point he has not impregnated her since Mustafa.
* DrivenByEnvy: Mahidevran is ''very'' unhappy about being demoted. She goes as far as to try to MurderTheHypotenuse.
* NeverMyFault: When meeting Suleyman after Mustafa's death, she blames him for his death and accuses him of pointlessly protecting the Sultanate. The problem is that she failed to recognize her blame in all the tragedy when she did conspiracies to attack Hürrem.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: Mahidevran's various attempts to destroy Hürrem lead to Süleyman being angry with Mahidevran for hurting Hürrem, and caring for poor Hürrem even more ''because'' she was hurt.
* {{Yandere}}: Mahidevran and Hürrem are both, almost equally, yanderes over Süleyman. Justified because their children's fates are on the line, but there's still a lot of petty jealousy involved too.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Hatice Sultan]]
!![[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatice_Sultan_(daughter_of_Selim_I) Hatice Sultan]]
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/magnificentcentury_haticesultan0.jpg]]
[-(Played by Selma Ergeç)-]\\
[-(Voiced by: Agostina Longo and Mariana de Iraola [Latin American Spanish dub])-]\\

The Valide Sultan's daughter and Süleyman's sister--the only one of his sisters who lives in Constantinople. Once widowed, she later marries İbrahim.

* BungledSuicide: Out of despair and a broken heart, she tries to commit suicide in the first season. It doesn't work, and because she's a Muslim and Islam condemns suicide, Hatice doesn't try again, although she is depressed for a while more and discusses suicide once again.
* GrewASpine: Initially very meek, the first noticeable change occurs when and after she snaps at Hürrem and Mahidevran about halfway through the first season. Once she gets married and moves out of the harem, becoming the mistress of her own house and getting out from under her mother's thumb, the process keeps going.
* LawOfInverseFertility: In the time that Hürrem has ''two'' healthy babies, maternal Hatice who so wants a baby, has a miscarriage. Hürrem seems almost sheepish to bring her baby around Hatice--embarrassed by her unfair fertility.
* MyBelovedSmother: [[spoiler:After a miscarriage, she's understandably overprotective of her firstborn, Mehmet. She's right to be…]]
* PrincessClassic: Hatice begins as something like this. She was married and widowed once before, and more mature for it, but still more or less a pure, feminine, beautiful, and kind princess.
* StaircaseTumble: During the Janissaries riots, [[spoiler:Hatice falls down the stairs, causing the miscarriage of her first baby.]]

[-(Played by Yusuf Berkan Demirbağ, Tunç Oral, & Mehmet Günsür)-]\\
[-(Voiced by: Andrea Higa (child), Pablo Gandolfo (older) [Latin American Spanish dub])-]\\
Mahidevran and Süleyman's only son; the first of the royal princes.

* ChickMagnet: Once he becomes an adult, the Harem girls fantasize about him.
* MoralityPet: Mahidevran is hardly a saint, but genuinely cares for her son Mustafa.
* PrincelingRivalry: With Mehmet. They start arguing about it when they're about 10 and 5.
* TheWisePrince: He is doing efforts to be a genuinely good ruler. At Season 4 Hürrem admits that she would want him to be her son and doesn't actually want to fight him.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Şehzade Mehmet]]
!![[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sehzade_Mehmed Şehzade Mehmet]]
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/magnificentcentury_sehzademehmet.jpg]]
[-(Played by Efe Bartu Yavuz, Arda Aranat, & Gürbey İleri)-]\\
[-(Voiced by: Alejandro Graue [Latin American Spanish dub])-]\\

Hürrem and Süleyman's firstborn; the second of the royal princes.

* BabiesMakeEverythingBetter: His existence solves a ''lot'' of problems for his mother, even in utero. Initially a FakePregnancy, Hürrem actually ''was'' pregnant and just didn't know it yet. Little fetus Mehmet meant that Hürrem didn't get killed for lying about that, didn't get married off, and became Süleyman's wife.
* ParentalFavoritism: Süleyman imagines Mehmed as his succesor because of the dream he had the night the boy was born. [[spoiler: Later when Mehmed is dead, he builds a throne on his tomb.]] Mehemed is also likely Hürrem's favourite son as her first-born and thus the one to make her sultana. She does everything she can to give him the throne and [[spoiler:only after his death she starts thinking of Bayezid as a future sultan.]]
* PrincelingRivalry: With Mustafa. They start arguing about it when they're about 10 and 5.

[-(Played by Ayda Acar, Melis Mutluç, & Pelin Karahan)-]\\
[-(Voiced by: Natalia Pupato [Latin American Spanish dub])-]\\
Hürrem and Süleyman's second child, and [[OutnumberedSibling only daughter]].

* ArrangedMarriage: To Rüstem Pasha whom she marries with tears in her eyes.
* BrainyBrunette: While her hair is darker than Hürrem's, she is every bit as cunning and manipulative as her.
* BrattyTeenageDaughter: Being Süleyman's only daughter she has shades of this, but grows out of it later.
* CoolBigSis: To Bayezid whom she supports in his quest to the throne. Also to Cihangir.
* DaddysGirl: Süleyman himself states there are only two persons he can't refuse: Hürrem and Mihrimah
* LikeParentLikeChild: [[LampshadeHanging Lampshaded]] by Şah Sultan in season 3 final: "You're not behaving like Hürrem, you are Hürrem." Also, Süleyman says he loves her that much, because she's so much like her mother.
* MayDecemberRomance: Her husband is around 20 years older than her.
* PrecociousCrush: On Balı Bey.
* OutnumberedSibling: She has 5 brothers.
* WhyCouldntYouBeDifferent: When Mihrimah is born, Hürrem is horrified that her daughter is a daughter, ruining Hürrem's BadassBoast that she would only have sons. (Ironically, the historical Mihrimah would be an extremely powerful figure in the ''Sultanate of Women'')
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Şehzade Selim]]
!![[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selim_II Şehzade Selim.]]
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/magnificentcentury_sehzadeselim.jpg]]
[-(Played by Yiğit Üst & Engin Öztürk)-]\\
[-(Voiced by: Patricio Lago [Latin American Spanish dub])-]\\

Hürrem and Süleyman's third child and second son; the third of the royal princes.

* TheAlcoholic
* BlackSheep: The alcoholic, as mentioned above, the one most prone to intrigues, as mentioned below, and the least talented of princes. None of his siblings seems particularly fond of him and his own mother sends him to Manisa so that their enemies attack rather Selim than Bayezid whom she descibes as her hope.
* DeadGuyJunior: Süleyman named his son after his father, Sultan Selim Khan--the boy's grandfather.
* EvilRedhead: He's the only one of Hürrem's children to inherit her red hair and also the one of the princes most prone to intrigues and backstabbing.
[[/folder]]

* BigBrotherWorship: For Mustafa.
* GentlemanAndAScholar: The most bookish of princes, and one of the nicest.
* IllBoy: He was born with a problem in the back. [[spoiler:Ultimately goes into TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth]]
[[/folder]]

!In the Harem
[[folder:Sümbül Ağa]]
!!Sümbül Ağa

[-(Played by Selim Bayraktar)-]\\
[-(Voiced by: Sebastián Castro Saavedra [Latin American Spanish dub])-]\\
The chief eunuch in the harem.

* LargeHam: He keeps it professional around the royal family, but with other servants he can get hammy.
* MadeASlave: Once, he was a free child, but was captured and his testicles were cut. He was eventually sold to the palace.
* InTouchWithHisFeminineSide: An interesting example. Sümbül Ağa's a eunuch, but EunuchsAreEvil notably averted--he's not creepy nor immoral. He's rather feminine, but that isn't seen as a bad thing--perhaps a little unusual, but it's expected of eunuchs.
[[/folder]]

* ConflictingLoyalty: She's supposed to obey the sultana. But who is the sultana?
* EroticDream: She has one about [[spoiler:İbrahim]]. It's awkward.
** She also may have a CasualKink. In the dream, he pushes her against a wall, yells at her, strangles her, then kisses her.
* HypercompetentSidekick
* LoveMartyr: She was so obsessed with her infatuation to Ibrahim, a man who is not above disposing of her.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: In 01x08, she gives one to Hürrem rather magnificently.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Gülfem Hatun]]

-[-(Played by Selen Öztürk)-]\\
[-(Voiced by: Erika Martens [Latin American Spanish dub])-]\\
An earlier concubine of Süleyman's, Gülfem never had any live babies. She remained in the harem, though not as a favorite, and is a dear friend of Hatice's.

* AmicableExes: She is accepted in the palace even after Suleyman dumps her in favor of Mahidevran due to her infertility. It is clear Suleyman trusts her.
* TheConfidant: She is Hatice's best friend and confidant.

[[/folder]]

[-(Voiced by: Mariana Correa [Latin American Spanish dub])-]\\
The Valide Sultan's servant.

* ILetGwenStacyDie: She believes herself to be an instigator of [[spoiler:the Valide Sultan's illness and death]], because she kept a particular secret of one servant. After the latter dies, she relinquishes the jewels and prestige of her role in the palace, [[spoiler:eventually killing herself.]]
* LadyInWaiting: To the Valide.
* OldRetainer: Atypical in that Daye and her mistress are of equal age, but Daye has been the Valide Sultan's for 30 years and loves her dearly, filling this trope.
* ShippingTorpedo: Daye is disapproving of [[spoiler:Nigar's affair with Ibrahim]], due to her poor opinion on the latter.

Mahidevran's main servant.

* BodyHorror: After [[spoiler:Ibrahim orders henchmen to stab Gülsah, her body is deeply wounded]].
* HeKnowsTooMuch: After realizing about [[spoiler:Ibrahim and Nigar's affair]], [[spoiler:Ibrahim has her stabbed in a way so horrific that Hürrem becomes sympathetic of her. While she got much better, the wounds were still evident enough to persuade Hatice that Ibrahim did cheat on her]]
* LadyInWaiting: To Mahidevran. She takes her job very seriously. [[spoiler:An estrangement with Mahidevran, knowledge about something against Ibrahim and a suggestion from Gul Aga motivates her to switch to Hürrem's side.]]
* MistreatmentInducedBetrayal: Being fully rejected by Mahidevran [[spoiler:makes her join Hürrem since Gul Aga told her she never dumps her employees]].
* MurderIsTheBestSolution: Gülşah is always quick to jump to murder. [[spoiler:This eventually becomes her undoing]].
* NeverSuicide: The girl who served Hürrem poisoned sweets is found having hanged herself in the cellars. Gülşah killed her and then staged her suicide as a cover-up.

A new ağa in the harem, brought specially at Hürrem's request.

* AppealToFlattery: He's such a sycophant.
* DoubleAgent: Since Mahidevran forces him to spy Hürrem [[spoiler:after pardoning him]], he is forced to be a spy for both. [[spoiler:His allegiances remain with Hürrem.]]
* InTouchWithHisFeminineSide: Like the other eunuchs, Gül Ağa is feminine, but not evil, averting EunuchsAreEvil. Gül Ağa takes the role of a GayBestFriend to Hürrem more than anything else, although he's not actually gay.
* PutOnABus: He is forced to leave the Topkapi palace after being exposed as [[spoiler:an accesory to the incrimination to Mahidevran]].

Born Maria, she is another Crimean girl kidnapped as a slave, and was sold to the harem alongside Hürrem.

* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: Gülnihal's face is scarred by a poisoned fur sent by Hürrem. First awful boils, then rough scaring, which soon fades. Several episodes later, her face is healed and scarless, much to Hürrem's shock.
* EtTuBrute: Due to unfair allegations of BackstabbingTheAlphaBitch, Hürrem [[KickTheDog poisons Gülnihal]]--her supposed best friend--to ruin her prospects, so Gülnihal's only possibility will be to be her servant. Gülnihal is horrified, as is everyone else.
* LadyInWaiting: She's Hürrem's personal servant, which mostly involves taking care of her children.
* PutOnABus: At the end of the first season, after surviving a stabbing, Gülnihal is sent to another palace to recover.
* TurnTheOtherCheek: She forgives her treacherous friend Hürrem for attempting to damage her face. Hürrem thanks her for that.

[-(Voiced by: Mara Brenner [Latin American Spanish dub])-]\\
Born Victoria, Sadıka is a Hungarian girl. After her husband is killed by the Süleyman, she infiltrates the harem to kill him.

* AlasPoorVillain: Her [[spoiler:death scene]] is very tragic.
* AttemptedRape: Sadıka by her [[TheMole co-conspirator]]. The rape is prevented by someone hearing her and coming, and partly by her stabbing him.
** Later she [[spoiler:is actually raped--by Süleyman no less--because she's too afraid to refuse the sultan.]] Her ShowerOfAngst afterwards is heartbreaking.
* SympatheticMurderer: She may be trying to assassinate the sultan, but her story is tragic enough to justify it.
* VengefulWidow: She is fighting to get revenge on her husband. She attempts so by infiltrating in Süleyman's Harem and doing an unsincere conversion to Islam so she can be able to murder Süleyman.
* WidowedAtTheWedding: Her husband was killed during their WartimeWedding.

* BaitAndSwitchTyrant: She is first introduced as a stern woman who will punish strictly any wrongdoer and who will make Hürrem's life impossible, but was revealed as a much more honest women than the Sultanas.
* HeroAntagonist: When initially brought, she worked alongside Mahidevran and Hatice to sabotage Hürrem's romance with Süleyman, thus becoming an antagonist to Hürrem. However, she was decidedly honest and she condemned the two Sultanas for exposing an innocent girl to be a decoy. Eventually her relationship with Hürrem improves.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: After Daye stopped appearing in Season 2 [[spoiler:due to Valide Sultan's death and her own suicide]], she was brought to fulfill her role as the old supervisor of the harem. When she is announced to come, Sümbul calls her the Daye of Dayes.

Characters/MagnificentCenturyServantsAndConcubines

* RedheadInGreen
* SensualSlavs: She begins her "career" in harem with seducing sultan. She's Ukrainian.
