Cool Loser TRS cleanup, has been renamed to Unconvincingly Unpopular Character and is a YMMV audience reaction.

* CoolLoser: Elmore Evans. Known far and wide for his ability as a sheriff for his humbleness, dedication, vigilance, unflappability, and of course ImprobableAimingSkills. Brings in more criminals on the frontier than anyone else. Literally tamed a bear once to impress a lady. Barely has any friends and never lost his virginity. His freakin' 12-year-old deputy has a girlfriend while he doesn't! He's also rather unacquainted to more fashionable things due to doing his best to seem MarriedToTheJob, and thus feels out of place at the likes of a party or a barbershop.

* CoolLoser: Phoebe Oakley is a bit like Evans in this regard, though there's occasions which shows she does at least have a few more friends than him while remaining as destitute with regards to the opposite sex.

* NiceHat: [[NeverBareheaded He's always wearing his cowboy hat]], aside from one chapter where he got sick and was wearing pajamas along with a nightcap to match (which he makes sure to not be seen in by Oakley and dons his regular hat to talk to her face-to-face). Oakley once seeing him go to a barber while she's getting her hair cut there excites her greatly, as it gives her a chance to see him with his hat off.

* GogglesDoNothing: SubvertedTrope - Evans ''usually'' doesn't wear his sunglasses that he has atop his hat, which one would imagine would get a lot more use in the sunbeat west even with [[Never Bareheaded his constantly worn hat]], but he will wear them at times along with wearing a scarf over his face to help conceal his identity.

* BeneathTheMask: Evans projects himself as a composed, ever-vigilant, incorruptible man who is basically the perfect, ideal sheriff. His internal thoughts and the narration make it pretty clear he's definitely not so much those things when you look inside his head, but he manages to get by presenting as much.

* CasualKink: Chapter 89 ends with Oakley brandishing a gun on a bounty target after bursting open the doors of a dresser while standing on Evans' back while his hands and knees, because there wasn't a lot of space in the dresser. Despite Oakley's apologies about how it made him look ridiculous, he was secretly kind of OK with it. Chapter 99 has him find he enjoys the sight of Oakley in a {{Meido}} uniform so much that he buys it for her (the reason neither find propriety's failed in the situation was Oakley's excuse that she was trying it on wondering if she could use it to infiltrate a mansion for a bounty target) and was trying to take a picture of her in it.

* ConsummateLiar: It's called Lies of the Sheriff Evans for a reason. Evans rarely ever talks in a straightforward manner unless he thinks his reputation calls for it (such as honestly telling caught criminals what's going to happen to them) - at best, he's probably ambiguous and vague to best portray his stoic, always-vigilant persona. She ends up deciding to donate to charity by the chapter's end.

* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Oakley might be one of the best {{Bounty Hunter}}s ever, second only ({{Always|SecondBest}}) to Evans in collars, and usually puts up a strong front to others but she's got a few especially-feminine characteristics about her, like her mostly-sensible clothing still having her always wearing a red ribbon tied on the top of her head and a skirt, or her quite-girly hopeful romantic notions from examining Evans' actions (granted, Evans goes over her with as much of a fine comb, though it's clearly at the impetus of his father's teachings), and some that she keeps under wraps (like keeping a {{Meido}} outfit that she never wears in public, but she looks in the mirror with it on in private).

His internal thoughts and the narration make it pretty clear he's definitely not so much those things when you look inside his head, but he manages to get by presenting as much.

* ChivalrousPervert: Elmore Evans literally became a gunslinging sheriff in the expectation it would make him popular with women. Unfortunately, that has not come to pass as he presents himself off so chivalrously that even if he does have a chance with one, he blows it by acting disinterested in the topic if he's just not terribly unlucky otherwise. He makes due with occasionally desperately trying to steal a glance at a pretty lady whenever he can.

Unfortunately, that has not come to pass as he presents himself off so chivalrously that even if he does have a chance with one, he blows it by acting disinterested in the topic if he's just not terribly unlucky otherwise. He takes his chivalry so seriously that he's quite horrified when a thieving woman tries to throw him off her trail by accusing him of perversely bothering her. He of course has his moments of acting chivalrous toward Oakley, to her delight. He makes due with occasionally desperately trying to steal a glance at a pretty lady whenever he can.

But of course, [[FailureIsTheOnlyOption he doesn't get to see anywhere near as much sexy as he'd like no matter how he tries]], [[UnluckilyLucky but his attempts at least never break his veneer of imperturbability]].

!!Phoebe Oakley

The famed BountyHunter, said to be the second-best shot in the west after Evans. Because of this, she never fails to take every opportunity to appear to him to show off or try to show him up.

[[RivalryAsCourtship Or so she says that is her motive]].

----
* ActionGirl: Phoebe Oakley being AlwaysSecondBest to Elmore Evans at shooting means she's miles better than a very long list of other gunslinging men of the West.
* AlwaysSecondBest: Oakley's always just a bit behind Evans in shooting ability and collars, which is why they're rivals. Well, [[RivalryAsCourtship rivals-ish]].
* ClingyJealousGirl: Despite not being Evans' girlfriend, Oakley will pretty much immediately feel threatened and try to do something about any sort of woman associating with Evans that Oakley can't rule having a romantic relationship with him.
* CoolLoser: Phoebe Oakley is a bit like Evans in this regard, though there's occasions which shows she does at least have a few more friends than him while remaining as destitute with regards to the opposite sex.
* TheGunslinger: Oakley's [[AlwaysSecondBest only second]] to Evans at this schtick, and she already won various shooting contests when she was only ''10''.
* KickingAssInAllHerFinery: Due to [[PoorCommunicationKills the usual communication issues]] in Chapter 105, Oakley dolls herself up thinking Evans invited her to a party while he actually thought she got word that the mayor ordered an attack on a gang's hideout. The volume's omake shows she just went along with it and still shot up the place in her gloves and dress, passing the events of the assault off as like a party anyway.
* TheRival: Oakley considers herself to be Evans' rival, ever since he handed her her first defeat in a shooting competition when they were younger. She takes it so seriously that she'll bypass several other closer towns with sheriffs just to drag a bounty to Evans, for the sole purpose of showing off and claiming she's better than him. [[RivalryAsCourtship Until it's clearly just an excuse to see him as much as possible for its own sake]].
* StalkerShrine: {{Downplayed|Trope}}, Oakley's never outright seen to have one of these for Evans, but she ''did'' weirdly collect as many different wanted posters of him as she could, so she might be close for being capable of making one.
* TrueBlueFemininity: The shirtdress that Oakley usually wears makes the dominant color of her outfit blue, along with her blue eyes. This is in contrast to Evans' red shirt.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Oakley is just as scared of the possibility of ghosts as Evans is, [[BirdsOfAFeather unsurprisingly]].

* Catch22Dilemma: The volume omake shows that Evans slept in and was late for his duel in Chapter 109 because...he stayed up all night trying to think of a good plan to make his victory magnificent and show off to Oakley. This tardiness ends up causing Oakley to doubt him the entire time as much as he tries to pass off arriving late as intentional.

----
* BlessedWithSuck: Even if he became a stoic lawman just to be popular with women, Evans is legitimately a good sheriff and a terrific gunslinger. Sadly, his inability to get a date comes from both the way he interprets his old man's teachings about girls and from how highly people think of him. Even if he doesn't notice/doesn't have time to act, Evans is popular with women, but some circumstance always gets in his way (she's too young, too vain, a criminal etc). Being popular in general mean he must always keep up his stoic facade, so he sometimes has problems doing even the most simple of tasks (like buying porn), as he's afraid of being caught.
