Bovril is one of Nora Barlow's creations, the "''Nycticebus perscitus''" ("smart lemur") or Perspicacious Loris. He was originally supposed to be gift for the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, but after hatching in Alek's presence, he bonds with the prince and accompanies him and Deryn.

* BondCreatures: He bonds with the first person he sees after hatching - Alek in this case - but has a strong bond with Deryn as well.

* CoolPet: He's a genetically modified lemur that specializes in attention and analysis.
* CreepyChild: He's actually very young (barely few months by the end of the story) and his speaking freaks Alek out.
* FlawedPrototype: Nora considers him this, as the events of ''Leviathan'' may have damaged him - for example, he bonds with two people and acts oddly sometimes. Alek and Deryn consider him rather a SuperPrototype, though.
* IntelligentGerbil: It's probably the most intelligent beastie of the crew (he's called "perspicacious" for a reason) and he talks, although he mostly repeats relevant words that he'd previously heard.

* ShoulderTeammate: He travels on Deryn's or Alek's shoulder.

* NotSoDifferent: They're no more saintly than the Clankers, or less likely to use dirty strategies. Also, while Clanker industry is seen as a great source of pollution, a few people (like Count Volger) point out that Darwinist fabricated animals have escaped into the wild many times and pose a dancer to natural species.

Daughter of balloon flyer from pre-darwinist era, she always wanted to fly. However, as woman are not permitted in military forces, she masks as a boy. With aid of her brother Jaspert, she joins Air Force as her nonexistent cousin Dylan Sharp and arrives on Leviathan when one of the exams go wrong.

* OneOfTheBoys: She quickly figures out how to match her behavior with the lads and rather enjoys it.

Granddaughter of ''this'' Charles Darwin. She works in London Zoological Association, which is MoreThanMeetsTheEye, and appears aboard ''Leviathan'' in a mission to Turkey, which kickstarts most of the plot.

* DullSurprise [[InvokedTrope Deliberately]]; it's useful for a diplomat to appear in control when there are shocking developments. She admits that her ability to maintain it is quite strained [[spoiler:when Deryn reveals her gender]].

The other midshipman left on ''Leviathan'' after doctor Barlow moved in, he wants to participate in war, but doesn't like beasties very much.

American journalist. He first appears in Istanbul in ''Behemoth'', chronicling the Clanker-Darwinist conflict in the city, and then in ''Goliath'' to write about Nicola Tesla.

Alek for most people, Aleksandar is the only child of archduke Franz Ferdinand. Duchess Sophia, his mother, was commoner enough to exclude him from inheriting Austro-Hungarian throne, but after his parents' assassination, he is taken away with intent of returning and claiming the throne once war ends.

* AcePilot: Can pilot a [[HumongousMecha Stormwalker]] easily - and at night, too. [[CaptainObvious (Yeah, it's not a common skill. You can't SEE at night.)]]

A low-level noble, Volger is Alek's fencing tutor and his father's strong supporter. After Franz Ferdinand's assassination he whisks Alek out of his family estate and becomes de-facto leader of the group. He's trying to achieve the best of Alek, stopping at nothing to achieve his goals.

* GuileHero: He's very crafty and tries a number of measures to keep themselves secure while on a nominally hostile ship, such as concealing his fluency in English.

* TheStrategist: He's been involved in the plans to keep Alek safe for years and plots their way through many dangers. Not that it always helps when dealing with [[SpannerInTheWorks Alek]].
* SternTeacher: He has very little patience for Alek's moodiness or foolishness.

* AcePilot: Alek consideres him the best mechanik in Austro-Hungary.

Daughter of the revolution movement's leader, Lilit is a definite ActionGirl who's cause for revolution is achieving the equal rights for woman.

Revolutionary leader of the CUP (Committee for Union and Progress) and Lilit's father.

A brilliant scientist and creator of Goliath, the world's first WeaponOfMassDestruction. He's an idealist, believing he has a moral obligation to end the war - whatever the cost.

* BadassBoast: About the capabilities of his Goliath superweapon; it caused TheTunguskaEvent. [[spoiler:It later comes out that this was untrue. Tesla kept the remains of the meteorite in his luggage to hide this fact.]]

* {{Foreshadowing}}: In the first scene with him we find out that to stop the warbears that were around his camp from starving, he fed them his airship, which is horrible for everybody in air force. He's explanation is "I couldn't bear seeing them suffer, so I let the nature take it's course". The entire situation foreshadows his plan to end the war.
* HistoricalVillainUpgrade: The plans for his DeathRay bear fruit in this story. Though he's not ''evil'', it does make him extremely dangerous. [[spoiler:He does eventually decide to use it on Berlin, but Alek kills him and it comes out that it probably wouldn't have worked anyway.]]

Darwinists consider themselves superior, as they use clean technology and, according to them, have no prejudices, in opposite to so-called "monkeys", who believe that beasties are work of Satan.

* BearsAreBadNews: Russian fighting bears are 'taller than a house'', and often ate their handlers (at least according to Mr. Rigby, the man in charge of the middies). In short, terrifying.
