It's revealed that ever since he was young, his aunt forced him to work as a help in richer people's households because she saw reading and writing as a waste of time. When Mr. Carpenter announces that the class has an contest to write a speech about their hopes for the future, Emily and Ilse urge him to join. They even ask Mr. Carpenter to make an exception for him though he's not a student, which he grants. Perry, however, reminds them of his aunt and how she looks down on reading and writing. When Ilse and Emily try to convince her to let him join it and she refuses, Perry is angered and insists that he will join it and win. That night, a storm attacks New Moon and Perry's aunt, concerned anout his safety, slips on some ice and falls. Perry skips the contest to visit her in the hospital, and she admits that she thinks Perry has the potential to be a great writer. When Emily, Teddy and Ilse return from school, Emily is happy to hear that he had finally gained her permission to be a writer, and reveals that she actually won the contest. However, she gives Perry the prize - a pretty laurel wreath.
