The ''Gato''-class submarines of the USN were the first mass-produced subs during the war, at an incredible 77 submarines in service. [[note]]Although some say only 73 were built due to the shifting of nature of the first four boats that was supposedly orignally going to be of the ''Balao''-class.[[/note]] Their original design was supposed to be working alongside the standard-type battleships back during World War I, namely as scouts, but the early concepts were failures. One of the most distinguishing features of the ''Gato''-class subs were the accomodations for their sailors, from air conditioning to individual bunks to refrigerated food storage, luxuries that was quite unheard of in other navies. Of the 77 boats, only six have survived to the modern day as museum ships - ''Cod'' (SS-224), ''Drum'' (SS-228), ''Silversides'' (SS-236), ''Cavalla'' (SS-244), ''Cobia'' (SS-245), and ''Croaker'' (SS-246).

Luckily, 'big fast long-range submarine' is a fairly easy concept to work with, and the ''Gato''s did good work in the vast expanses of the Pacific Ocean. The USN's dreadnought battleships - ''Nevada'' and ''Oklahoma'' - built during World War I, taking lessons learned from the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Jutland Battle of Jutland]] that the RN had went through, namely in developing [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_or_nothing_(armor) all or nothing armor]] that emphasized protection against long-range engagement, and introducing three-gun turrets arrangement and improved boilers. Their developments laid the foundations for the later [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard-type_battleship standard-type battleships]], being the ''Pennsylvania'', ''New Mexico'', ''Tennessee'', and ''Colorado''-class battleships. ''Nevada'' and ''Oklahoma'' were moored at Pearl Harbor when the IJN attacked, which resulted in ''Oklahoma'' capsizing while ''Nevada'' was able to escape sinking into deeper waters. Nevada would be raised and returned to duty, but Oklahoma was considered too badly damaged (didn't help that she was also upside-down) and would only be righted and refloated after the war was over so the US could re-use her berth and properly scrap her. Oklahoma's hulk sank during a Pacific storm while being towed to San Francisco for scrapping.

** In her default art, the smokestacks are shown in their up-right position on her flight deck carrying case, yet they're rotated parallel to her deck as seen in her damage art. Ranger's smokestacks were hinged so that they could be rotated down during flight operations since she was designed as a flush-deck carrier, lacking the island seen in later carriers, which is referenced in her idle line and several of her hourlies.

Some of the destroyers and cruisers use what is a combination of a real life gun stock and grip with their turrets.

waters.
