A parasitic alien race responsible for wiping out many other species. The Imperium invaded Mars about 1000 years ago and waged a genocidal war against the Martians that lasted several centuries until a small group of survivors raided their fortress and finally managed to defeat them with a powerful nerve toxin that incapacitated them. Only one Martian managed to survive the raid, J'onn J'onzz, who was also the last surviving Martian on the planet. J'onn sealed away the Imperium within their underground fortress and, for the next 500 years, took it upon himself to watch over them to ensure they would never awaken again. Unfortunately, while J'onn was in a hibernation cycle, an astronaut from Earth found and accidentally unsealed the fortress, awakening the Imperium. With no Martians left to conquer, the Imperium set their sights on Earth.

* DeadlyGas: This is how the Imperium were defeated on Mars. The surviving Martians, including J'onn, launched a raid on their underground fortress and unleashed a powerful nerve toxin that incapacitated them. Unfortunately, the nerve gas couldn't be used again when the Imperium were reawakened because it was created from a rare Martian plant, and the only living sample J'onn brought with him to Earth was destroyed when he was captured and imprisoned by the military.

* {{Shapeshifting}}: One of the powers that they assimilated from the Martians is the ability to transform. This is how their invasion force managed to get Earth, by sending advanced agents disguied as humans to sabotage Earth's defenses and to convince Earth's political leaders into nuclear disarmament.

Added DiffLines:

* HostileTerraforming. Upon landing on Earth, the Imperium began setting up terraforming devices to block out the sun because of their weakness to sunlight.
* KryptoniteFactor: The Imperium are fatally weak to sunlight, which is why their main invasion strategy relied on blotting out the sun with their terraforming devices.
