* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler:In ''Immortal Hulk'' issue 0, it turns out the Leader's been torturing Brian by making him relive his death over and over again.]]

* AssholeVictim: This man was an utter bastard. Even if it wasn't entirely an accident... no-one in their right mind would hold it against Bruce for killing his father.
* AxCrazy: He spent his married life terrorising his wife and son, killing the former after she tried to leave him - which got him sent to a mental institiution - and ultimately would attempt to murder Bruce himself later on in a crazed episode. Death has only made him worse in this regard, as he’s come back from the dead multiple times to launch more attempts on the life of his son, a major one of which was helping [[spoiler:The One Below All]] cross into and destroy the Universe just to see his son suffer in the resulting carnage.

* CommanderContrarian: He despised baby Bruce, seeing him as a monster, but at the same time would lose his temper (well, lose it ''more'') at the thought of someone taking him away.

* {{Retcon}}: Originally, Bill Mantlo's run said that Bruce and Brian's last meeting Brian had attacked Bruce and ran off into the night, to be killed by muggers. Several years later, Peter David established that actually, Bruce had killed Brian by accident, and ''he'' was the one who ran off into the night, blocking the memories out.

* BodyHorror: That time he ascended, his body bloated until it didn't look remotely human anymore. In his depiction in ''Immortal Hulk'', his body proportions are just slightly off.

* DemonicPossession: [[spoiler:In ''Immortal Hulk'', he figures out a way to hijack control of anyone who's been in the Below Place, starting with Rick Jones, then moving on to the Green Scar and Del Frye. However, after that, his attention starts slipping due to the four-way split.]]

* MyBrainIsBig: And depending upon the artist and how advanced his mental state is, may be exposed. Sometimes he has even worn external braces to help support his head upright. Once when he nearly lost his intellect and had to get it back, he instead wound up with a thick, gigantic cranium that made it ''look'' like he had a giant brain.

Bruce's deceased father. The horrific abuse he gave him as a child, coupled with the violent murder of Bruce's mother, was responsible for fracturing Bruce's psyche and therefore the path that led him to becoming the Incredible Hulk. He himself was killed by Bruce (accidentally...or not) during a confrontation, ironically on the anniversary of his mother's death. On a personal level, he is Bruce's very first enemy, and remains one of his greatest foes even though he's long-dead. Part of it is due to Bruce/Hulk's difficulty of dealing with the abuse he suffered at a young age. The fact that he ''actually does come back to plague him again'' doesn't help matters.

Dr. [=McGowan=] is forced to dig up Rick Jone's corpse and turn it into an abomination on ''his'' orders? Her fault. Said abomination starts killing people? Needed to be done. * BelievingTheirOwnLies: Fortean claims that he wants to stop chaos and bring order. But in reality, he wants control, and to dominate. Unlike Ross it was never about helping make the world a better place. It was always about control and he used other members of the military unter the pretext of getting revenge for Ross' death to acquire the resources to pursue his own goals. Once he had his resources and people he started doing whatever it took to gain power and exert control over what he calls the shadows or chaos but really just wanted to set himself up as the one in charge behind the shadows. It's even stated that they have no interest in destroying the Hulk and the aim of Fortean's organization is to weaponize gamma mutation.

A malevolent entity that resides in the Below-Place - the deepest layer of Hell, the One Below All is the dark counterpart of the One Above All. Sealed behind a metaphysical Green Door, it is the source of the elusive mutagenic third form of Gamma energy, and in a way every Gamma mutate is a facet of it.

* TheAntiGod: As the opposite of the One Above All, using terms to describe itself that are a dark mirror of its benevolent counterpart.
* BigDumbBody: Pretty much the main reason a lot of gamma mutates end up super strong giants with impaired minds. Its ultimate goal is becoming a Galactus level Hulk capable of destroying everything.
* ColorMotif: Heavily associated with the color green as a part of its connection to gamma radiation. To a far lesser extent it's also associated with the red gamma mutations. What the latter means, especially since it only comes about from adding cosmic radiation is not yet clear.
* {{Cumulonemesis}}: The closest thing to its true appearance is a giant, storming green thunderhead with glowing pinholes for eyes and a gaping maw in the Below Place.
* DeathIsCheap: Under its auspices death is meaningless. Gamma mutates won't stay dead if it doesn't want them to.
* DeathOfPersonality: Extended possession allows it to gradually erode all other personalities in it's host until all that's left is the emptiness that is it.
* DemonicPossession: The One Below All can possess Gamma mutates by slipping through them from the Green Door. If another superhuman then absorbs the mutate's Gamma, the One Below All can then pass into them.
** [[spoiler: In a BadFuture, the One Below All has completely possessed the body of the Hulk, having eaten all of Banner's identities.]]
* EmeraldPower: Is the source of power behind gamma mutation.
* AFormYouAreComfortableWith: {{Inverted|Trope}}; The One Below All uses avatars to avoid breaking mortal minds because it wants them to suffer instead. It most often is shown using David Banner, specifically because it unnerves the Devil Hulk. For others it uses a NightmareFace.
* HeroKiller: In the BadFuture, it [[spoiler: eats Franklin Richards, Galactus, Mr Immortal and every Hulk persona.]]
* EmptyShell: A recurring motif is emptiness or being a hollowed out husk. It wants to make the universe as empty as it is within, by destroying all life and snuffing out all light.
* LeakingCanOfEvil: It's largely sealed in the Below Place behind the Green Door but as its debut series show this does almost nothing to prevents its influence from reaching across the multiverse.
* LegacyCharacter: [[spoiler: In the BadFuture, the One Below All possesses the Hulk and becomes the last living being in the universe, thereby becoming Galactus' heir in the next universe. The One Below All also takes on the Green Scar's outfit, nickname of 'Worldbreaker', and [[ArcWords never stops making the universe's inhabitants pay]].]]
* OmnicidalManiac: It's ultimate goal is the freedom to destroy everything in the universe if not the multiverse, leaving only a dark, empty ruin for all time.
* SicklyGreenGlow: Its association with gamma radiation comes with a lot of neon green.
* ThePowerOfHate: Hate is its weapon but fortunately it only has as much power as it is given.
