* AllLovingHero: She is very idealistic, believes humans are kind, and does good things without expecting anything in return.
* BreakTheCutie: At a young age, Sandybell's father dies of disease, the Countess dies, Mark runs away and she's sent to a foster home where the only other child hates her. She's also subject to Kitty's nasty behaviour on a regular basis.

* ChronicHeroSyndrome: She risks her life to save a sheep from Kitty's car, Edward from the rushing stream, and [[spoiler: Jirobi from the exploding oil cannisters]]. Whenever Sandybell sees anyone in danger, she won't think and will instantly act to save them.

* BreakTheCutie: Mark's family is struggling to adapt to their new lifestyle after losing their money, and just as he makes some new friends, his mother is brutally killed in a traffic accident. To save face, he's told to marry a girl he can't stand, and Mark is so full of grief he runs away.

* AbhorrentAdmirer: Mark himself does not like her because he knows her true self is an unpleasant, pushy woman who treats everyone around her cruelly. [[spoiler: He outright admits to not wanting to marry her to her [[BrokenTears duress]]. Kitty is sad, but eventually accepts that she cannot force him to love her]].
* AnimalJingoism: Of sorts. Her name is ''Kitty'' and she's deathly afraid of rats.

* LoveHurts: When Linda told her father about the man she wanted to marry, he rejected him. Linda is seen crying in her flashback as Edward pleads with him to reconsider. Later, she and her husband had Sandybell. One day, when the two were on a cruise ship, the engine malfunctioned and the ship began to sink. The two managed to make it on a lifeboat, but Linda was severely injured, lost her memory, while he was swept by a current and later died.

* MissingMom: She was raised by a single father, Leslie, and would constantly question him about her mother. However, he refused to tell her anything about her, just that she was a very pretty lady who died of a disease when she was little. He eventually confesses that he never knew her mother when he's on the brink of death and she's adopted. The last arc of the anime is about Sandybell looking for her, [[spoiler: and eventually finding her in the Greek island of Lefkada]].

* DubNameChange: In the European Portugeuese dub his name is changed to '''Gustavo Petersen'''.

* RefugeInAudacity: His very first meeting with Sandybell. He was in the hospital for a broken leg, and he was brought flowers by some strangers (who actually wished to curry his favour because of his BlueBlood). Edward insulted them and called them out for only caring about him because of his standing in High Society, then saw the flowers Sandybell was bringing for her father Leslie and ''demanded those instead''. Sandybell was angry and refused, and wouldn't have befriended him if it wasn't for Leslie overhearing everything and asking her to share them with him.

* ExactEavesdropping: Sandybell happens to hear Mrs. Ronwood shit-talk her to her husband, and is deeply hurt at the woman's cruelty.

* GreenThumb: Sandybell is a NatureLover, and works for the Countess by tending to the Wellington castle's garden, after she rejected the Shearer's gardener to do it for her.

* KiddyCoveralls:Sandybell wears orange overalls and enjoys playing with animals and in nature, defies the adults who tell her where she can't play, and is the ringleader of the RagtagBunchOfMisfits.

* CoolOldGuy: He has saved Sandybell's life many times, and she views him as a protector.

* MeaningfulAppearance: Despite his tan, he has blonde hair and blue eyes, [[spoiler: just like Sandybell]].
* ParentalSubstitute: [[spoiler:By the end of the series, Sandybell's mother returns to Greece to care for the orphans[[note]]Having built a bond for them for years, and feeling attached to them as if they were her own children[[/note]], but not without going to Scotland first and paying her respects to Leslie's grave, while also attending Sandybell and Mark's party. Thus Edward becomes this trope fully, having taken over as Sandybell's parental figure in place of Kern and Leslie, alongside Mr. and Mrs. Scott]].

* FairytaleWeddingDress: During Mark's party, Kitty wears a blue, frilly dress with her signature cravat. At the engagement party, she wears a blue dress with a yellow flower on the chest.
* FieryRedhead: She has red hair and is very haughty and ill-tempered to Sandybell and her friends.

* MissFanservice: When Mark is going to draw her, she strips down to her bikini. Notably, it's the first time the show enters racy territory.

* VagueAge: Kitty is old enough to drive her own car and get married, but she also has eyes for Mark, who has a crush on twelve-year-old Sandybell. In Scotland, the marriageable age is 16, and to get a license for driving you have to be at least 17 years old, unless you are getting or have applied for the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in which case the minimum age is 16. Not helping that the anime gratuitously shows Sandybell and Ricky as KidsDrivingCars, though that's only with one specific do-anything vehicle.
