''VisualNovel/TheFruitOfGrisaia'' is the first of a series of Visual Novels by Front Wing. Unlike the later novels, it serves mostly to introduce the cast and is mostly a school based romance with only occasional hints as to Yuuji's true profession and life.

[[folder:Kazami Yuuji]]
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuuji_6428.jpg]]
-> Voiced in the anime adaptation by: Creator/TakahiroSakurai

The main protagonist of the Grisaia trilogy. Ace number 9029, Yuuji is the “janitor” for the underworld. Tired of the life, he wanted to live a normal school life. Cool, philosophical, and minimalist, Yuuji is a realist, but also tsundere. Being very cowardly, he always plans and scouts before action. Other than his occasional orthodontic military methods, he’s just a fit young man. However, his choice of disguising as a second year “exchange student from Canada” is questionable at best.

----
* AbusiveParents: [[spoiler:His father definitely counts, due to treating him like trash and, in Yuuji's own words, as the leftovers from his more prodigal sister. His mother counts as well, but hers is arguably more by way of apathy - if nothing else, she did show some form of affection for him by the end]].
* TheAce: Skilled at martial arts and a deadly sniper.
* AnArmAndALeg: [[spoiler:Loses his right arm in Makina’s route when his shoulder is pulverized by a shotgun. He does get a [[ArtificialLimbs prosthetic arm]] but it's barely noticeable in the CG image due to it being hidden beneath the sleeve of his shirt and his "hand's" position being obscured behind his crossed left arm. On the bright side however, at least he was able to part with the "devil" that tormented him from within his right hand.]]
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:Yuuji's reason for living is, in his own words, to pay back his master Asako's kindness in saving his life by saving someone else's in turn. In fact, his desire to live a normal life is because he's tired of being a tool to use and, in several of the routes - chiefly Makina's - he expresses a desire to try and atone for a lot of the acts he's carried out]].
* AwkwardFatherSonBondingActivity: Yuuji’s idea of fatherly activities is running Makina through exercise routines. Oddly enough, she’s okay with that while everyone else is uneasy or embarrassed to watch them. To his surprise, she’s actually really good at stuff like that despite being really weak for her age.
* BadassBookworm: His sister and his master insisted on him reading in order to broaden his experience.
* BadLiar: There’s a reason Yuuji has a reputation for honesty, even if he may hide things. Namely, his lies suck.
* {{Bishonen}}: Amane will comment on Yuuji looking similar to his sister Kazuki. [[spoiler:This gets taken to a nightmarish level in the sequel where Yuuji's backstory is revealed]].
* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler:Due to the trauma of losing his entire family, being trained and brainwashed by a terrorist, and killing several people, he ends up having nightmares that'll haunt him for most of his life.]]
* BrokenAce: Yuuji has went through a lot in the past, and many of it will stay with him untill the end. He may be the best agent at the company wearing the legendary number 9029, a codename reserved for the best agent, but to get here at such a young age meant he was actually trained as a child soldier. Being treated as disposable piece of defense equipment for so long, under constant supervision with a leash so short, that stepping away from the phone for too long would earn him a swift execution by a hit squad, has eroded him considerably. This is one of the main reasons he came to Mihama, to have a shot at a normal life, yet he can't help feeling out of place, wondering if he even deserves peace or happiness from life.
* BrotherSisterIncest: He had a rather... "close" relationship with his sister when she was still around. In ''Labyrinth of Grisaia'', it's revealed that Kazuki often molested him when they were children although no actual sex was preformed.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: When Yuuji goes out on a mission, JB will invariably chew him out for breaking protocol in some way, but he always gets results. According to JB, all of the 9029 agents are these to Ichigaya.
* CaptainOblivious: Yuuji is genuinely baffled as to why anyone would even care that he’s accepted the role as Makina’s new dad let alone have any complaints about it.
* ChickMagnet: It’s hinted that Yuuji is probably quite popular with girls, though considering the small cast size it’s difficult to tell. What is clear, though, is that there’s some UST not only with the girls, but also with the principal and even JB. Makina and Sachi's routes make it painfully obvious.
* ChildSoldier: [[spoiler:Raised from a young age to be a killer and soldier by his master Asako. His backstory later reveals he was was being trained in this even before that]].
* CodeName: 9029, the number reserved for agents who are [[BunnyEarsLawyer both highly skilled and highly obnoxious]].
* ColdSniper: He's a DeadpanSnarker and rather detached outwardly, and he is most commonly noted by others for his skill at sniping - in Makina's route, he even notes it was his specialty.
* ConvenientlySeated: Yuuji sits in the back seat next to the window. He's one of only six people in a classroom that inexplicably has thirty-six seats, but he ''still'' chooses a window seat.
* CoolTeacher: [[spoiler:Ends up teaching English at Mihama Academy in Amane's Good Ending after finally being put into permanent reserve.]]
* CruelToBeKind: Michiru’s [[spoiler:transplanted personality]] tries to make everything easier for her. Much to her surprise, Yuuji refuses to play along and makes Michiru do her own difficult work. He doesn’t make even that easy for her. Considering Michiru’s earlier insecurities, he’s clearly doing it on purpose. The result is still him forcing Michiru to embarrass herself at length and repeatedly when he could make it easy for her or at least play dumb and ignore Michiru’s guardian completely.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler: He went through a ''lot'' of crap, [[TraumaCongaLine much of it in quick succession]]]].
* DeadpanSnarker: When accosted by police, Yuuji moves between bare basic compliance, absolute silence and heavy sarcasm.
* DeathGlare: He is often noted to involuntary give one when he's thinking darker thoughts related to his job or his past by the girls at Mihama, particularly Yumiko. [[spoiler: And when he has Irisu Kiyoka at gunpoint, we actually get to see said expression and it is ''chilling''.]]
* {{Determinator}}: [[spoiler:For all his talking about how easy it is for one to die at any time, Yuuji is seen shrugging off rather severe injuries ranging from stabs and gunshots to full-on shotgun blasts - although in Makina's route, he does die from it if he's too reckless and he gets crippled in both Amane's bad end and Makina's good end]].
* DotingParent: Amane and Yuuji become Makina’s doting parents in Makina’s route. Yuuji takes the strict but fair approach while Amane is nudged into being the overprotective mom. Not that she needed much convincing.
* DrillSergeantNasty: When he gets worked up, in some of the more comical scenes.
* EvilStoleMyFaith: Yuuji calmly and clearly states his own atheism, but unlike much of what he says it appears to be nothing more than an opinion and not necessarily something the audience is supposed to believe. It’s simply a conclusion he reached based on his own harsh experiences. [[spoiler:The heart donor girl pretty flatly calls him out on acting so confident about it when he has no experience in the matter. She is, after all, sort of proof that it’s not as simple as he thinks if nothing else.]]
* {{Expy}}: Has some similarities to [[LightNovel/FateZero Kiritsugu Emiya]].
* FacePalm:
** When Makina asks if Yuuji will be her new papa, he begins massaging his eyebrows.
** During Yumiko's route, after she and Yuuji come back to the dorm after a downpour, this is his reaction when Amane tell him not to "do" her while she has a cold.
* FingerForcedSmile: Though we doesn't get to see it, Yuuji does this to himself in Michiru's route when Yumiko questions him about the frightening expression on his face. Since he was just lost in thought he tries to reassure her this way.
* FriendshipMoment: Early in Makina’s route, Yuuji tells Amane he doesn’t feel comfortable bringing anyone with him to visit and clean Asako’s grave. The first day after Amane leaves to visit her grandparents, Makina suggests that she and Yuuji move the grave visit up a little and he agrees without any sign of true hesitation. When the pair arrive at Asako’s old cabin she also realizes how important a visit this is to him and is uncharacteristically quiet and serious.
* FriendToAllChildren: Shown on several occasions to be good with people younger than himself.
* TheGadfly: Yuuji spends a lot of his time picking on the girls, but he doesn’t seem to be doing it on purpose about half of the time. It seems to be a special favorite of his to take people’s jokes seriously.
* GiverOfLameNames: Invoked to make sure Michiru never calls him by a nickname again. He starts calling her Mitcher and all the other girls similarly annoying, lazy things based off their real names and she just can’t take it.
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:Seems to go through this when Makina is shot and hospitalized in the rising climax of her route, but especially so in Sachi's bad end when she's splattered by a truck running a red light right in front of him]].
* HomeNudist: In the first episode of the anime, it's shown that he SleepsInTheNude and even goes through his morning routine without putting any clothes on, with the camera staying [[ShouldersUpNudity above his waist]] most of the time.
* HypocrisyNod: While talking down to Amane for assuming she has any common sense, he admits that he’s probably even worse than her.
* ICantBelieveAGuyLikeYouWouldNoticeMe: Amane’s devotion to Yuuji actually makes him a little uncomfortable. She’s beautiful, kind, domestic and easy to get along with while he views himself in an unspecified but rather negative way. [[spoiler:In a way, he’s not wrong: Amane admits that she needs him more than she loves him at the start. Quite possibly it was his instincts cluing him in given his lack of similar sentiments for Sachi.]]
* IgnoreTheFanservice:
** Manages to hold completely normal conversations with a mostly naked Amane on several occasions.
** He calmly gets a drink from his fridge while Amane is in his room rolling on his bed and sniffing his sheets.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Sometimes Yuuji [[TheGadfly picks on people for fun]] but a surprising amount of the time he just has no idea how to behave with even a modicum of politeness or tact.
* ItAmusedMe: In front of Makina, he claims that sending her flying with shoves while teaching her to ride a bike was tough love, but when talking to Amane in private admits that it was actually just hilarious watching her crash into trees and stuff.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: [[spoiler:Goes hand in hand with his slight {{Tsundere}} leanings; he often feigns disinterest in the affairs of the other girls, but he is shown to truly be a good-natured person at heart, if not a bit standoffish]].
* {{Keigo}}: One of the ways that Yuuji drastically stands out against his peers is his use of extremely formal, awkward speech. No slang, no casual speech, all keigo all the time.
* LastNameBasis: Yumiko Sakaki is the only person Yuuji really speaks to on a last name basis and getting less formal requires two rather emotional moments.
* MadeOfIron: [[spoiler:Yuuji has shown to shrug off being shot by a shotgun, twice (in Makina's route and in Amane's route), despite knowing the fact that such injuries sustained from this weapon can be fatal and would kill a normal person. In Makina's route, it's even worse because his shoulder was completely pulverized, but he was still able to get out of the Irisu headquaters out of sheer willpower before eventually passing out from blood loss and almost dying]].
* MyCountryTisOfTheeThatISting: Yuuji doesn’t have a lot of nice things to say about the Japanese military or general Japanese goals. For example, training only to do well on a test and not being able to actually perform under stress, blinding themselves to obvious facts around them and committing to unwinnable wars like WWII and [[ItCantBeHelped the general passivity of Japanese culture]].
* {{Naytheist}}: Yuuji is pretty disinterested when it comes to religion, but he does state that he finds the idea of intelligent design plausible. Only some deity with a nasty sense of humor could explain his master.
* NecessaryEvil: Yuuji says early on that his "Company" is based on this.
* NewTransferStudent: How Yuuji is introduced, being the first and only male transfer student to Mihama Academy.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: All the death and suffering in Makina's route is ultimately caused by him accepting her money.
* NoSocialSkills: Yuuji just isn’t much for tact.
--> “Hey Yumiko… [[spoiler:you touched my dick last night, didn’t you?]]
* NotDistractedByTheSexy: When walking in on a half-naked Amane, Yuuji’s reaction is no reaction at all. He asks if someone ordered him a stripper and then gets a glass of water. It’s hot out, you know?
* NotSoAboveItAll: While normally played as the OnlySaneMan, Yuuji isn't above getting caught up in his own abnormal moments. The most noteworthy is when he zones out during a conversation with Sachi and Michiru, unwittingly agreeing to the former's request to make him a rhinestone-covered shark pouch. Upon realizing the situation, he starts acting in an increasingly panicked manner while trying to undo the request, with his failure to do so causing him to start beating on the walls and screaming at himself for having not gotten the sleep needed to stay awake during Sachi's conversation - a display that even ''[[TheDitz Mich]]''''[[ClassClown iru]]'' considers undignified.
* ObliviousToLove: Yuuji is very perceptive except when it comes to love. When Amane gives him a direct confession early on after a long period of flirty behavior, he’s actually really uneasy and feels like it’s something that is inappropriate for him. [[spoiler:The fact that she's lying doesn't help: He knew something wasn't right here.]]
* OnlyAFleshWound: Averted. [[spoiler:When Yuuji takes a shotgun blast that pulverizes his shoulder, ]]he knows perfectly well it could easily be fatal, but tells himself it’s not so he doesn’t freeze up. [[spoiler:He does live, but only barely and loses his right arm.]]
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Yuuji being serious in front of JB instead of snarking at or insulting her tends to throw her off.
%%* ParentalSubstitute: To Makina.
* PerpetualFrowner: He very rarely smiles, and even when he does both he and others note that it feels and looks unnatural and unused. [[spoiler:The only times an actual image of him smiling is shown in-game is in the good end of Makina's route, and in the good end of Yumiko's route]].
* PolitenessJudo: As a ‘courtesy’ Yuuji waves to the man tailing him and to make the job ‘easier’ goes and sits next to him until the man feels so uncomfortable that he simply leaves.
* RaceForYourLove: After Yumiko’s father [[spoiler: successfully grabs her, Yuuji pursues the kidnappers]] first on a bicycle through mountain roads and then ‘borrows’ a man’s ridiculously fast and expensive car to beat a helicopter to the airport.
* RenaissanceMan: He was raised by Asako so that even if he couldn’t do everything well, there wouldn’t be anything he couldn’t do at all. If nothing else, it’s a good way to inspire self-confidence.
* ReplacementGoldfish: Makina’s father died some time ago and after a while she wonders if she can make Yuuji into her new papa.
* StalkerWithoutACrush: When Yuuji gets bored, he sometimes starts following around his classmates for no real reason. They don’t notice unless he wants them to. He IS a professional, after all.
* TheStoic: Most of the girls take note of his normally-taciturn demeanor, to the point that Michiru tries to nickname him "Mr. Standoffish Man." In fact, he's so deeply rooted in this behavior that, when he does finally laugh at something, he bursts into a coughing fit due to being so unused to it.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Yuuji is called a {{Tsundere}} a few times, but really fits here better. He acts cool and sarcastic all the time, but when he gets involved with someone he tends to devote himself strongly to helping them out, no matter how much he claims it was all their own work that they improved.
* SuperSenses: Yuuji is actually kind of confused that Makina can barely even see a bird in the distance while he can tell you the color of its eyes. He has to bring her a telescope to see the same thing.
* TheTease: Upon seeing Amane attempt to act provocatively, he ignores the fanservice and simply starts teasing her back much more effectively.
* TechnicallyASmile: For the most part, Yuuji can only fake smiles. Upon seeing his attempt at a smile, Amane immediately resolves to get a genuine one out of him at some point. He does laugh once, but he’s so unused to it that he actually starts coughing.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Yuuji tends to choose food based on nutritional content, and goes for beans when he cooks for himself. He also likes oolong tea.
* TraumaCongaLine: [[spoiler:''[[PunctuatedForEmphasis Where. To. Start?]]'' That his parents were dirtbags to him? That his sister, the only person who valued him in any way was reported dead in a bus crash, which drove his parents insane and made the father kill the mother? That he killed the father himself in retaliation for the mother's death? That he had to abandon his only childhood friend because of all the chaos? That he got adopted by a black-ops soldier and trained to be a professional killer and child soldier? And that's not even ''touching'' on what's revealed about him in the [[VisualNovel/TheLabyrinthOfGrisaia second game]]]].
* {{Tsundere}}: According to Makina, Yuuji himself is tsundere. He generally just considers himself as having a soft spot for kids and it would perhaps be more accurate to call say he has a SugarAndIcePersonality. Except when it comes to JB. Definite tsundere when it comes to her.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: When he was little, Yuuji was a little introverted but very nice and friendly to anyone that would talk to him. Now, he’s sarcastic, secretly gloomy and has a terrible self-image.
* WillNotTellALie: Yuuji dislikes telling lies. He thinks that once you’ve told a lie you’re probably going to get caught eventually.

[[folder:Sakaki Yumiko]]
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yumikogrisaia_943.jpg]]
-> Voiced by: Creator/RyoukoTanaka (Credited as: Hikaru Isshiki)

A second-year student in Mihama Academy, Yumiko is the only daughter of the tycoon of the East Beach Railway Express Group. After Mihama academy had been established, she was the first student to enroll. Her characteristic is a waist-length black hair. Because of her bluntness and hard-to-please personality, her association with strangers is bad. Always trying to be alone, she hardly meets with the others. She always carries a box cutter with her and use it to threaten others when she’s getting angry. She reads so many books that she’s called a “Bookworm”, especially when it comes to mystery novels. Although she acts like a proper lady most of the time, she also enjoys eating junk foods like a cup of fried soba noodles and surfing the internet.

Her representative fruit is grape.
----
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: Yumiko is perpetually hostile and distant, though she'll at least participate in some group activities if she isn't expected to get too involved.
* ApologizesALot: Once she's mellowed out, she's the type who always tries to apologize. It irritates Yuuji because it reminds him of his useless mother, who could never do anything but offer apologies.
* AttackHello: Yumiko generally greets Yuuji early on by trying to slam his finger in the door or attacking him with a knife. She gives up mostly because Yuuji points out that she’s never going to succeed in landing an attack.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler:Both of her endings have her married to Yuuji with a child.]]
* BewareTheQuietOnes: She may be the least social of the Mihama students, usually keeping to her books or locking herself up in her room, however, she is also the last person you want to piss off. That could easily result in an outburst of violence, making her draw her [[KnifeNut signature boxcutter]] and brandish it menacingly.
* BittersweetEnding: Her bad ending [[spoiler: has her HappilyMarried to Yuuji with a son, but her father has disowned her. Yuuji's been fired from Ichigaya for running away with her and is working a menial job.]]
* {{Bookworm}}: She apparently spends a lot of her free time simply reading, though Sachi catches on that she just wants people to think she's a big reader and isn't really that interested.
* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler:Her mother's delirious words to her, asking why she couldn't have been born a boy, broke Yumiko down into lamenting her existence based on factors she couldn't control. It ultimately culminated in her injuring a classmate with her box-cutter in a [[LaughingMad hysterical fit of laughter]].]]
* BrokenBird: [[spoiler:She has little in the way of self-value, equating her life the black comedic tragedy of some cruel deity's design]].
* CallingTheOldManOut: [[spoiler:The entire point of Yumiko's good ending. When she finally confronts her father Michiaki after months of hiding, she calls him out on his actions and even outright says that he's not a human being. Of course, this doesn't phase him and it takes an unprecedented phone call of his removal as the president of his company to finally put him in his place, but it was a critical moment for Yumiko's character development as a whole as it shows that she's no longer afraid of him.]]
* TheComicallySerious: Yumiko always acts dignified and aloof, but she’s pretty goofy when given the chance. And still acting all aloof then.
* TheConfidant: She might be antisocial and prickly at best, but Yumiko’s judgment is probably the clearest of any of the Mihama girls, so Yuuji always depends on her if he needs advice or an ally.
* CovertPervert: Though at first she seems to be the one modest female in the story, it turns out Yumiko just has the sense to hide her interest. She probably thinks more about sex than the secretly timid [[LovableSexManiac Amane]]. The only one to really catch on is Sachi who says pretty bluntly that if you want to keep your internet searches secret you should probably put a password longer than six characters on your computer.
** She admits to being masochist in Makina's route, and fails to conceal her interest in observing impromptu "Soft S&M" session in Sachi's route.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler:Her father never loved her or her mother, which led her mentally and physically weak mother to be hospitalised, and her to be shipped to her mother's parents. Her grandparents only saw her as an asset, as only her extremely wealthy father kept their business afloat. It was always bemoaned for her not to be born as a boy, because then she would have been able to [[HeirClubForMen become a proper heir to her father]]. When her mother started to get better and they started to get their relationship normalized for the first time since her birth, her father had conceived a bastard, and planned to divorce her mother, and the mere news completely broke her. Then her father took back Yumiko, acting resentful of his actions, only to turn out, that his bastard died and he needed an heir again. Even in school she had to find out that her classmate only pretended to be her friend to screw with her, which led her to attack said classmate with a box cutter.]]
* ADateWithRosiePalms: Having caught on after the incident with Amane, he seems to have learned his lesson in Yumiko's route by pretending he was asleep the whole time. [[spoiler:Until the next morning, anyway.]]
* DefrostingIceQueen: She is rich, sheltered, [[ProudBeauty prideful]], and most certainly [[AloofDarkHairedGirl cold and aloof]]. In her route, she defrosts so much that she eventually turns into complete mush. Outside it, she simply mellows out like Makina said she would.
* DudeHesLikeInAComa: [[spoiler:Of all people, Yumiko begins ‘massaging’ Yuuji in what she assumes to be his sleep, much to his confusion.]]
* {{Expy}}: Is basically Hitagi Senjougahara from ''LightNovel/{{Bakemonogatari}}'' in all but name and with a [[AttackHello box cutter]] instead of Senjougahara's [[ImprobableWeapon iconic stapler]]. They even shared the ''same illustrator'', Watanabe Akio.
* {{Foil}}: The friendly, social Michiru plays the foil to the gloomy, isolated Yumiko [[spoiler:though it’s actually in their basic similarity rather than their differences: Both have severe abandonment issues and merely cope with it in different ways.]] Because of this, their personalities are noted to clash a lot.
* GenerationXerox: She’s Chizuru as she was about ten years ago. Chizuru herself tries to give her love advice and Amane looks on her with pity.
* GirlsAreReallyScaredOfHorrorMovies: She reacts exactly this way when Yuuji drags her into a haunted house attraction.
* HappilyMarried: In both the good and bad endings, [[spoiler:to Yuuji]].
* HeyYou: Yumiko addresses Yuuji this way at first, so he responds by using her first name and forcing her to come to a compromise with both using last names.
* KnifeNut: She carries a box-cutter with her and has a habit of wiping it out whenever anyone so much as annoys her. She even tries (unsuccessfully) to slash Yuuji throughout the course of the prologue.
* LaughingMad: [[spoiler: When she stabs her classmate with a box cutter in her backstory.]]
* LethalChef: To her shame, she can't cook at all. It leaves her feeling useless and like Yuuji is the one doing all the work and getting nothing out of it.
* LonelyRichKid: She's never had a real friend before and her parents view her as either a tool or just something that's around sometimes. Only one person in her life has really cared about her before and when she died, her family didn't even let Yumiko attend the funeral.
* {{Ojou}}: She tries to deemphasize it, but Yumiko is quite the sheltered rich girl. She’s prone to flattery, easily startled and has opinions she knows make her a total stereotype like finding the ocean unsanitary. The others also all come from decently wealthy families, but none are nearly as sheltered as her barring ''maybe'' Michiru.
* OnlySaneWoman: As Makina puts it, deep down she wants to be the girl on the fringe of the group offering sarcastic quips about the rest of the group. Of course, she's probably the one with the most normal attitude once you get past the prickly rejection.
* ParentalNeglect: Yumiko is estranged from her father because [[spoiler:he never really even acknowledged her existence as a child. Building on that, her mother was completely indifferent to her, her grandparents treat her with irritation and it just continued on for years.]]
* RescueRomance: Yumiko’s feelings go from implied crush to utter faith in Yuuji when [[spoiler:her father starts attempting to kidnap her.]]
* SarcasticConfession: Seeing Yumiko and Sachi looking awkward, Makina instantly yells out that they must have used a study session as an excuse to watch porn together. Yumiko just says "Yeah, more or less" and Makina just thinks that she's grown more resistant to teasing. The pair were, in fact, simply watching porn.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: According to Makina, Yumiko is your standard by the book {{Kuudere}}. Once she stops with the knife attacks, perhaps she has a point there. The full dere mode is something to behold, but she tends to defrost to a decent level by the point any route begins. In Michiru’s route she even seems pretty hurt when Michiru starts acting distant instead of her when she’s trying to be nice. Later in that route, she [[spoiler:completely broke down crying and frantically tried to wake Michiru up after Yuuji began moving her to her "grave", something nobody else did.]]
* TraumaCongaLine: Yumiko backstory is a long parade of {{Hope Spot}}s and everyone around her being a complete asshole apart from one old woman. Overall, her backstory is less horrible than the likes of Makina or Amane, but it was consistent throughout her entire development.
* {{Tsundere}}: Despite being more of a {{Kuudere}}, Yumiko is also a natural at being this, which makes a dismayed Michiru tell Yumiko to stop stealing her gimmick, even though Yuuji Kazami is more {{Kuudere}} then {{Tsundere}}.
%%* TsurimeEyes
* WhyCouldntYouBeDifferent: Her entire family at one point expressed that they wished she was a boy.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: While it may seem like Yumiko has black hair, her hair is actually a darker shade of purple.

[[folder:Suou Amane]]
[[quoteright:320:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amane_4213.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:260:[[labelnote:click here]][[quoteright:230:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/345610_screenshots_20160926120629_1.jpg]][[/labelnote]] to see her younger self.]]
-> Voiced by: Creator/HirokoTaguchi (Credited as: Sora Yukimi)

A third-year student in Mihama Academy, Amane is the big sister type who always takes care of others. For her own personal reasons and circumstances, she was forced to repeat one school year at her previous school, so in reality she is actually 2 years older than Yuuji. She is tall and has a well-developed body, a fact that causes Yuuji some degree of discomfort due to his past experiences in dealing with large women. Her family manages a long-established restaurant in Ginza, so she has been well-trained at cooking from an early age. Because her mother comes from Kyoto, when getting excited or panic, she sometimes talks in Kansai dialect. She has a deep interest in automobiles, and owns a two-wheeled vehicle license along with "Bobatarou", a heavily modified dirt bike currently sitting in the garage of the academy.

Her representative fruit is cherry.
----
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: She was constantly tormented after she was revealed to be the only one who survived.
* ApologizesALot: Has a habit of apologizing frequently since her childhood days because she's been taught by her mother to do so if she did something wrong. [[spoiler:Which she takes to its logical extreme when she feels it's all her fault for not being able to save everyone in the ravine, including Kazuki, and all she could do is apologize. Yuuji takes measures to ensure she stops this habit since their was nothing she could really do about it.]]
* BadassBoast: "There's a fire in my belly and a vacuum in my mouth!"
* BigSisterInstinct: Tries to become Yuuji's big sister if he doesn't want to be her boyfriend. [[spoiler: She believes it's her responsibility to Yuuji for not being able to save Kazuki.]]
* BuxomIsBetter: Amane is rather well endowed, which mostly played for [[GagBoobs laughs]], but protagonist Yuuji is by self-admission, likes breasts bigger, and since Amane is aware of that kind of tendency in man, she is not afraid to take advantage of it. In fact Amane deliberately dresses in skimpy outfits, not only to show off her "assets" more, but because she noticed, that the elderly male shopkeepers tend to shower her with freebies.
* CannotTellAJoke: Humor isn't exactly Amane's specialty. Her attempts at jokes usually come off as way too believable to even be funny and are usually met with awkward stares from everyone around her.
* CoolBigSis: Amane likes to be seen as the big sister figure. She even asks Yuuji to treat her like a big sister [[spoiler:since she feels it’s her fault he doesn’t have one anymore.]]
* CoolBike: Owns a modified American chopper-style motorcycle named "Bobataro".
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler:Her entire basketball team were stranded in a ravine for weeks after their bus crashed there, where the situation gradually went to hell. Her classmates died one after another, until starvation drove the rest to resort to cannibalism, and when trying to escape from her crazed classmates she was forced to leave behind her best friend, making her the sole survivor of the accident. Even after being rescued, thanks to malicious media coverage, everyone suspected her only surviving by resorting to cannibalism and leaving everyone else to die, earning her the nickname: The cockroach.]]
* ADateWithRosiePalms: Nearly attempted when she sneaks into Yuuji’s room and doesn’t see him there. A disinterested Yuuji had entered the room behind her and upon seeing her simply went to the fridge to get a drink while wondering if he should let her know he was actually there.
* DemotedToExtra: In the ''Leisure of Grisaia'' short story, Amane doesn't get involved with Michiru's activities at all and her only onscreen appearance was when she was counseling Michiru at a restaurant, followed by an end gag of her entering Yumiko's room while the latter was about to buy a set of fetish cuffs off the internet. Kind of [[{{Irony}} ironic]] actually considering her role as the {{Deuteragonist}} in the main series.
* DevilsAdvocate: When playing as Makina’s papa, Yuuji drafts Amane into playing the mama role with the express purpose of having her always disagree with him to make Makina consider both sides of the issue. Trouble is, Yuuji is pretty convincing and often raises arguments she agrees with.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Out of all the heroines, she is the one with most screentime and the only one who plays an important role in most of the other routes. [[spoiler:Her story is the longest of the visual novel, and the only one with an incorporated side story. Her ending has the most developed ending and epilogue, as it is the one who goes the furthest in the future, to the point that it actually shows [[DeadlyDistantFinale the main characters dying]], making it a complete story with no scope of continuation.]]
* {{Determinator}}: There's nothing she wouldn't do to protect Yuuji. [[spoiler:In her bad end, that includes attacking a crazed gunman even after she's taken a shotgun blast to the stomach, and refusing to let go of the man even after she's been killed.]]
* DoggedNiceGirl: Amane confesses pretty early and lets it be known that she’s still interested from time to time, but for the most part tries not to get in the way or anything.
* DotingParent: Amane and Yuuji become Makina’s doting parents in Makina’s route. Yuuji takes the strict but fair approach while Amane is nudged into being the overprotective mom. Not that she needed much convincing.
* DrivesLikeCrazy: Amane is not to be trusted with a vehicle. Get her excited and she’ll start street racing.
* GagBoobs: Let's be honest, her breasts are ''colossal''.
* {{Golden Ending}}: According to the majority of the fans, her ending is this.
* GoOutWithASmile: [[spoiler: In her good end, an elderly Amane dies happily after making peace with what happened on the camping trip so many years ago.]]
* GrowOldWithMe: [[spoiler: The conclusion of her good end, with Yuuji. Features an aging Amane's thoughts following their graduation, parenthood, retirement, and peaceful passing.]]
* IHaveBoobsYouMustObey:
** Attempted, but Yuuji couldn’t care less about Amane’s boobs.
** Yuuji convinces her to, well, act like she normally does in the shopping district in order to get Makina a part time job at the bakery.
* InSeriesNickname: [[spoiler: Cockroach]]
* IResembleThatRemark: Loudly protests that she’s not hopeless at social etiquette only for Yuuji to drily note her habit of rubbing her breasts on him.
* KansaiRegionalDialect: Amane normally speaks standard Japanese, but sometimes relaxes a little and speaks with an accent. Despite [[BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine the region's reputation]], she couldn't tell a good joke to save her life.
* LovableSexManiac: Amane is aware that the impression she gives off is the ‘horny big sister’ type, which isn’t helped by breaking into Yuuji’s room early in the morning, not finding him and then starting to sniff his clothes and sheet because the ‘manstink’ smells good. Goes downhill from there. [[OnceDoneNeverForgotten Especially her reputation, which never really recovers.]]
* LoveAtFirstSight: Amane claims to have fallen for Yuuji at first sight because she thinks he looks hopeless. [[spoiler:Not really true. Mild attraction at first sight at best that eventually developed into something more genuine.]]
* MeaningfulName: Amane means "The Sound of the Heaven", [[spoiler:which is actually significant in her good ending because she goes to heaven with Yuuji.]]
* {{Meganekko}}: [[spoiler:Amane had originally worn glasses when she was in middle school which you can see in her backstory. While it's never revealed why she stopped wearing them afterwards, it's likely that she did so out of old shame as a result of the horrifying events in the ravine.]]
* MsFanservice: She's the character most often seen in the nude, and also the one who minds being seen nude the least - she even dresses in such a way as to accentuate her being the "sexy chick".
* MyGreatestFailure: [[spoiler:Amane feels it's her fault for not being able to save Kazuki in the ravine and thinks she deserves punishment for it. When she meets Yuuji at Mihama Academy, she sees him as a chance to finally atone for her "sins" and becomes his replacement big sister. Later, after Yuuji learns about her backstory, he gives Amane her official "punishment": to say "thank you" instead of apologizing as a way to show gratitude to Kazuki and her deceased classmates, and eventually save Amane from her own past burdens.]]
* NiceGirl: Amane is the friendly, social and responsible member of the group. She likes to think of herself as the big sister of the group, but in truth acts something like the TeamMom. Yuuji actually finds her a little TOO convenient in that respect.
* OverprotectiveMom: To Makina. During Makina's route, Amane worried over the prospect of Makina doing a part-time job by herself so much that Yuuji had to talk her out of it.
* PostVictoryCollapse: When Amane finally gets Yuuji to accept her, she seems calm and in control at first, but then she falls down as all the strength leaves her body.
* RapunzelHair: Amane’s hair is so long and thick that it probably weighs more than Makina. Or should, anyway. It's also genuinely long enough that she sits on it sometimes and manages to hurt herself once as a result.
* ReplacementGoldfish: Amane wants to be Yuuji's big sister [[spoiler:since she feels responsible for him not having one anymore.]]
* SelectiveObliviousness: Amane doesn’t want to find out what Yuuji does for a living. So she doesn’t.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: Amane goes around dressed skimpily since she appreciates the reactions. When she starts getting changed in Yuuji’s room and he walks in, she refuses to get embarrassed until she realizes that he doesn’t mind, at which point she finally tells him to leave.
* SoleSurvivor: [[spoiler:Amane is the sole survivor of the bus crash that claimed Yuuji’s sister and their club. Officially, anyway, since Kazuki did survive.]]
* StatuesqueStunner: Amane is nearly as tall as Yuuji and held to be quite attractive [[{{Tsundere}} even if he won't admit it.]]
* StepfordSmiler: Amane can tell Yuuji fakes his smile because she simply happens to be much better than he is at faking them.
* SurvivorGuilt: [[spoiler: This trope combined with SoleSurvivor above is the core of her trauma both due to the loss of her friends in a terrible accident in which she survived, and the victimization she suffered from the angry and sorrowful relatives of the dead and the cruel gossipers who believe that her survival was due to her heartlessly engaging in NoPartyLikeADonnerParty to survive.]]
* TheTease: Amane flirts with Yuuji a lot, though she seems to be pretty serious. Unfortunately for her, she can dish it out but can't take it while Yuuji is immune to teasing.
%%* TsurimeEyes
* TeamChef: Goes hand in hand with being the TeamMom, as she is the one who tends to cook meals for the dorm. [[spoiler:Becomes one of her official duties in the sequal]].
* TeamMom: Often plays this for Makina. [[spoiler:Gets elevated to Dorm Mother as her official role and job at Mihama in the sequel]].
* TogetherInDeath: [[spoiler: In her good ending, after she dies, there's a CG of her coming up to Heaven to meet Yuuji once again after he'd passed away several years earlier.]]
* WrenchWench: She loves cars, especially her mini-truck and motorcycle.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She has magenta hair.

[[folder:Matsushima Michiru]]
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/michiru_3309.jpg]]
-> Voiced by: Creator/KaoriMizuhashi (Credited as: Urara Hani)

A second-year in Mihama academy, Michiru is a wannabe tsundere with bleached blonde twin-tails. She has a deep interest in tsundere-ness and tries to act like a tsundere herself, though she often falls short in hilarious fashion. With her silly and energetic personality, she acts as the mood-maker of the class, though she's academically somewhat weak and - even ignoring her ditzy personality - isn't the brightest spark. She always carries a shark-shaped pouch which contains lemonade-flavored "ramune" candy. Despite having difficulty dealing with sour foods, she still tries to drink 100% pure Vitamin C juice boxes in order to ostensibly “improve her intelligence”. She's been on the bad side of Lady Luck since birth, it seems, but she always manages to get through it in one way or another.

Her representative fruit is the lemon.
----
* ACupAngst: Michiru is pretty touchy about her chest size. Her only consolation is comparing herself to Makina. Notable is that she isn't ''that'' small; it's just that she's small in comparison to Yumiko and especially Amane.
* AllTakeAndNoGive: Yuuji suspects that Michiru is acting as selfish as possible towards Sachi precisely to see how much she can get away with. Apparently quite a lot. [[SubvertedTrope However]], she does have a way of stepping in with really bad lies to help Sachi feel better when she messes up. There’re also a lot of little things that she takes care of that Yuuji doesn’t notice.
* AttendingYourOwnFuneral: To make a point, Yuuji [[spoiler:fakes Michiru’s death and buries her. She’s quite astonished to hear that people actually do care about her and the letters they left her push her to making a real decision instead of just running away.]] So then she has a choice to make: [[spoiler:Stay dead, or come out of the box?]]
* AttentionWhore: Michiru acts like a tsundere so she’ll stand out more.
* BadLiar: Michiru is an absolutely terrible liar whether attempting to use her ‘skills’ for good (comforting Sachi by claiming she loves melted ice cream) or evil (claiming she has no idea where this cat that is most certainly not named Kittymeow came from) though most people are generally willing to let it slide.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: Michiru unwisely commands Sachi to help her overcome her weaknesses and not to spoil her. The end result is that Sachi’s sadist side awakens.
* BornUnlucky: Yuuji at least believes Michiru must be cursed or something.
* BreakoutCharacter: Michiru became popular enough to star in her own spin-off MagicalGirl series called ''Idol Mahou Shoujo Chiru Chiru Michiru'', and also became the main focus of the ''Leisure of Grisaia'' short story.
* BuriedAlive: [[spoiler:To make a point about how she should be living in a brutally direct way, Yuuji buries Michiru alive when she requests to die. However, he leaves her close enough to the surface to easily escape on her own, makes the lid flimsy, makes sure there’s an air passage and leaves her a phone to call him on.]]
* ButtMonkey: Michiru is frequently the butt of jokes, though she gets genuinely upset about it once or twice. [[spoiler:She’s actually playing the clown since it at least lets her feel useful is she can amuse people.]]
* ClassClown: Michiru acts like a spaz [[spoiler:because even amusing others with her own failure lets her feel a little less useless.]]
* CordonBleughChef: Despite making food such as an entire loaf of bread hollowed out and filled with salad, Michiru’s food is surprisingly edible. Not great, but not bad. Unfortunately, Yuuji considers herself a mini JB and therefore useless as a cook because even if her food is edible, she makes the kitchen into a disaster in the process and refuses to clean up after herself.
* TheCuckoolanderWasRight: Michiru is slightly uneasy regarding Yuuji since his background is so mysterious. [[spoiler:In Amane’s route, before giving her approval she tells Amane that if he turns out to be a secret agent, spy, terrorist or something it’s not her fault Amane got involved with him. As should be clear from this point despite it never being stated, Yuuji is exactly that sort of person]].
* CuteLittleFangs: Given Michiru’s attempts to act tsundere, maybe the little pointy tooth is also an affectation.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler: She was never a bright student, so when she underperformed with her private tutors, her father always blamed and humiliated them. Out of petty revenge her tutors took out their frustration on her, abusing her both mentally and physically, forcing her to admit being completely useless, which left her with severe depression and cripplingly low self-esteem. Which then lead her parents growing distant with her. When she went to a normal school and finally managed to make a friend, her friend committed suicide. She had a bad heart, which had to be replaced, however when the heart donor girl's conscience awakened inside her even being capable of taking control of her body, she tried to commit suicide, which caused her to be locked in a psychiatric ward, from which she only got out of by faking a different personality.]]
* DespairEventHorizon: She crosses this when [[spoiler: her cat Meowmell dies, worsening her depression to the point that she attempts suicide, and only at the climax of her route does she finally gets better.]]
* TheDitz: Michiru tends to be pretty flaky and doesn’t seem too bright, though the issues she’s had with stress in the past certainly don’t help her in the present.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: Michiru apparently hates both cinnamon and sour things, though she’s convinced herself that drinking a horribly sour Vitamin C drink is good for her.
* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler:Michiru has attempted suicide twice over the course of her life due to severe anxiety and the feeling of being useless and not needed to everyone, even her own parents. Once, she tried to jump off the roof of her previous school but much to her dismay, she couldn't gain the courage to do it, making friends with a girl who was about to jump off in the process. For a moment, that friendship was a small HopeSpot for Michiru until the girl said she couldn't go on living anymore in front of her, and commits suicide anyway, leaving her an emotional wreck. And again, after her HeadPet Meowmel was killed in an accident in her route, she tried to overdose herself with her own medicine, prompting Yuuji to save her via pressing on her stomach to spit out the contents and getting Chizuru for aid.]]
** [[spoiler:And if you pursue her bad ending, Michiru does a third attempt at the hospital by downing large amounts of medicine with alcohol which leaves her with [[FateWorseThanDeath brain damage from hypoxia.]]]]
* DumbBlonde: To TooDumbToLive levels at times.
* EmptyEyes: [[spoiler: On her bad ending she suffers permanent brain damage leaving her with no sense of self, that emptiness is reflected in her eyes.]]
* EmptyShell: [[spoiler:Michiru becomes this on her bad ending, where her attempted suicide leaves her with permanent brain damage.]]
* FateWorseThanDeath: On her bad ending [[spoiler:her attempted suicide causes her to suffer permanent brain damage, leaving her with no sense of self, and Yuuji to live out the rest his life with her and the knowledge that he could not help her, twisting the knife further, Michiru shows signs that she is still vaguely aware that she loves Yuuji.]]
* FriendshipMoment: Michiru gives a standard tsundere farewell [[spoiler:when Yuuji and Makina go into hiding]] and when Yuuji accepts it at face value she quietly admits that she’s lying and really is concerned for his wellbeing.
* GenericCuteness: Michiru seems to be a victim of this. The other girls are noted at several points to be quite attractive while Michiru is trying to make herself stand out more by dyeing her hair and acting tsundere. By appearances, however, she’s about on par with the rest apart from the goofy faces she makes.
* GeneticMemory: Michiru's alternate personality is theorized by her doctor to be an extreme version of this.
* GirlishPigtails: Michiru attempts to cultivate a tsundere image and first bleaches her hair and then puts it in twin-tails to complete it.
* GiverOfLameNames: Michiru names the stray cat she sort of adopted Kittymeow (Nekonya) though she at least realizes this is a terrible name. Eventually, she grudgingly admits that maybe the cat is sorta kinda hers, but that she’s been calling it Kittymeow [[SubvertedTrope because she doesn’t want to give it a real name]] and get attached. [[DoubleSubversion Then she starts calling it Meowmmel]] as a portmanteau of Kittymeow and Rommel.
* HeadPet: The black cat Michiru finds in the common route named Kittymeow (Nekonya), and later, renames him Meowmel in her route after she gets fed up of Yuuji calling him Rommel. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, he doesn't stick around for too long in her route as he gets ran over by a car offscreen and later dies in Michiru's hands.]]
* TheHeart: Surprisingly, Michiru acts in many ways as the emotional center of the group. She helps keep everyone in balance. Without her around, Makina and Sakaki begin to clash, Sachi gets exhausted and Amane begins to notice the little mistakes Sachi does make.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: In the past [[spoiler:it became obvious at an early age that Michiru is not the brightest mind, something her father blamed on her tutors, as petty revenge, the tutors abused Michiru both mentally and physically, convincing her that she is utterly useless]], which crippled her self-esteem for life. [[spoiler:This mental issue and other events escalated the situation, until she ended up locked up in psychiatry. Where she realised that [[ObfuscatingStupidity making an idiot out of herself]] makes people laugh.]] Now she acts like the [[spoiler:[[ButtMonkey Butt-Monkey]] and the [[ClassClown Class Clown]]]], because she feels this is the only thing she is even remotely good at, making people laugh and bringing at least that much happiness in their life.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Sachi. In most of the routes that are not theirs, it's pretty clear that both Michiru and Sachi share a special friendship bond with each other and are willing to help each other out in times of need. Yumiko's good ending [[spoiler:even mentions that they're going to attend the same boarding school together]].
* IdiotHair: Yuuji manages to convince Michiru that her idiot hair, which he calls Charlie[[note]]Her twin-tails are Alpha and Bravo[[/note]], is cat repellant. She gains a HeadPet for her trouble when she believes him.
* IllGirl: Whenever she gets stressed out, Michiru appears to have chest pains, but then she’s back to normal again. [[spoiler:She had a chronic heart disease, but she got a transplant. So she’s healthy now, but it’s still a sign her personality is going to change.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Michiru likes to act pompous and bratty, but she secretly acts as TheHeart of the group and helps out Sachi on a lot of her requests to help her actually be able to manage all the things she’s asked to do. [[spoiler:She's also known to demonstrate sincere kindness and concern for others in some routes, sometimes momentarily dropping the tsundere act to express her honest feelings.]]
* NotSoInnocentWhistle: Michiru tries this one during Makina’s route, but since she actually can’t whistle the impact is somewhat diminished.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Played with; [[spoiler:While she's not the sharpest crayon in the box, much of Michiru's more outlandish behavior is revealed in her route to be artificial, as being the ClassClown and PluckyComicRelief is [[HeroicSelfDeprecation the only thing she feels she can succeed at and give to others]].]]
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: When Michiru finally responds to normal prodding with something other than more silliness, Amane is shocked. [[spoiler:Probably because Michiru was nearly screaming at her over what wasn’t even really teasing but simply normal curiosity.]] Not that much later, Yumiko is confused and a little sad because she's trying to be nice for once but Michiru is too depressed to respond properly.
* ParentalNeglect: Compared to Yumiko's, Michiru’s family was much more supportive and caring, but when [[spoiler:anxiety and heart disease made her both extremely depressed and look like a failure,]] the relationship started to grow distant. Given her extremely low self-esteem, it's not certain how much of it was their genuine lack if interest in her, or [[UnreliableNarrator her interpreting]] their nervous concern over her well-being through her self-perceived worthlessness.
* PostKissCatatonia: When Michiru refuses to admit she doesn’t know what ‘first base’ is, she asks Yuuji to show her and refuses to listen when he attempts to explain she shouldn’t ask him that. So he goes and kisses her, reducing her vocabulary to ‘y-yeah’ and causing a zombie state where she repeatedly walks into a bucket. It lasts until she tries eating her entire stock of ramune candies at once and throws up.
* RemovedFromThePicture: On her route [[spoiler:Michiru removes herself from all the pictures she have taken with the other girls of Mihama, symbolizing how she has given up on life and they are better off without her.]]
* SadClown: [[spoiler:Michiru does a very convincing [[ClassClown clown act]]. However it is revealed on her route that there is a rather depressing [[HeroicSelfDeprecation reason]] why she acts like this. Basicly acting like a clown is the only thing she feels she is not completely useless at, making people laugh, and making them at least that much happier.]]
* SharingABody: [[spoiler:As it turns out, Michiru shares her body with a separate personality - specifically that of the girl who's heart was transplanted into her to save her life]].
* SmarterThanYouLook: Michiru, unlike Makina, is not a potential genius. However, she’s explicitly acting stupider than she really is and some of her poor performance appears to be a result of anxiety rather than lack of ability. [[spoiler:As mentioned above, in Amane's route she's revealed to have a keen sense of intuition, as she gets close to guessing Yuuji's profession on pure gut instinct.]]
* SplitPersonality: Near the end of the common route, when Michiru has a minor heart issue she begins acting completely differently. [[spoiler:She got a heart transplant from a comatose American girl and the American girl takes over to help Michiru out when she gets too stressed. Michiru knows but doesn't want to admit it.]]
* StepfordSmiler: Michiru acts like a goofball so that she can feel less useless and more popular. She actually has a really depressed natural state [[spoiler:and has been on the verge of or outright attempted suicide at least twice.]]
* TalkingToThemself: [[spoiler:Only at the end of her route when Michiru finally manages to accept her other side, managing to coexist with her, do they become able to communicate.]]
* TraumaCongaLine: Let's just say that after her lackluster academic skills were discovered as a child her life went downhill.
* {{Tsundere}}: Michiru is seen at the start of the story giving herself tsundere practice. She keeps fumbling at it and being decently polite and friendly. She gets called out on it in short order and no one takes it seriously. However, when she’s not playacting at tsundere, she does seem to be a little tsuntsun towards Yuuji and tends to get a little jealous when he starts dating someone else. She actually fantasizes about being able to be open with her feelings and simply snuggling with Yuuji. Much to her displeasure, the only ones who seem to really ''like'' her tsundere schtick are a bunch of kids and Michiru hates children.
%%* TsurimeEyes
* TheUnfavorite: Michiru's parents doted on her when she was little, but when [[spoiler:she turned out to be easily stressed, gloomy and not very intelligent]] they grew distant, especially when she had a new little brother. It did reverse itself a little [[spoiler:but only because her second personality started interacting with people on her behalf and acting bright and cheerful, which caused her parents to think of that as her normal personality.]]
* VerbalTic: While she doesn't say it all the time, Michiru does have a habit of spouting "Mkiiiiii!" whenever she's irritated or angry. She also has a habit of reflexively repeating the last word someone else says if they place emphasis on it, as demonstrated by Yuuji in one scene.
* YankTheDogsChain: When Michiru finally manages to beat the others at something (namely, scoring points off how ‘close’ you can get to Yumiko) it’s by complete fluke. Then she brags about it, except Yumiko is standing right behind her and apparently believes her when she says it was intentional. Woops.

[[folder:Irisu Makina]]
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/makina_8500.jpg]]
-> Voiced by: Creator/TomoeTamiyasu

A first-year in Mihama academy, Makina is an innocent and carefree girl. For some unexplainable reasons, it’s hard to understand her personality. Though generally she could be most aptly described as a "fool", sometimes her speech and behavior make people shed cold sweat. She adores Yuuji as a brother and Amane as a sister. She calls Yuuji “Onii-chan”. Although she has her own room in the dormitory, she always stays in Amane’s room. She always wears knee-socks with 2 different colors. Because of her parents' work, she stayed in foreign countries until she was 6 so she can speak English, though not as well as she thinks. Her family is rumored to be a large financial clique which controls the underworld of Japan, but few people know of the unhappiness she suffers from for having been born to such a troublesome family. She was previously the successor to the Irisu family, but her right to inheritance was transferred to her younger sister, Irisu Sarina, after she suffered serious mental trauma following an incident.

Her representative fruit is strawberry.
----
* BigEater: She only eats the stuff she likes and will occasionally skip meals, so when she is hungry it's not unusual for her to eat a large full meal and five minutes later start talking about how hungry she is.
* BigScrewedUpFamily: Makina’s family is an ugly mess with a sociopathic mother running the group and the relatives at best useless. Her own sad suspicion when a car bombing happens is that the main family was attempting to assassinate the current heir, a daughter of the branch family.
* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler:She was kidnapped and tied up in a warehouse by thugs hired by her own family - specifically her mother - and watched her father be killed right in front of her. Than she was left trapped with his decaying body for almost a week - an experience that left her both cripplingly shy of outsiders and seemed to give her a speech impediment due to her time in the hospital]].
* ChildProdigy: Makina considers herself stupid, but Yuuji quickly discovers that she has a photographic memory and she can actually be quite witty. [[spoiler:She did better before she was left in a room with her father's rotting corpse for six days straight. Afterwards, she was so traumatized that she could barely communicate for years, which led to her current scatterbrained personality.]]
* CordonBleughChef: The question of whether or not Makina can cook competently is overshadowed by whether or not she would ever bother to try cooking apart from items like melon bread stuffed with whipped cream and melon jam. It’s bad enough that even Garbage Eater Yuuji is apprehensive. She’s pretty good at making bread, though.
* TheCuckoolanderWasRight: Makina’s interpretations of everyone’s character is occasionally spot on. For example, claiming that Yumiko is distant now but secretly wants to play the long-suffering OnlySaneMan. Completely true.
* DespairEventHorizon: In her bad ending, when [[spoiler:Yuuji dies in front of her]] she snaps and becomes Ichigaya’s new “problem child” agent, keeping [[spoiler:Yuuji’s rotting body in a garbage bag, convinced that he’s still alive.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler: Her family, an extremely influential and wealthy one, was completely corrupted, so when the only half-decent person, her father, the only person who ever loved her, decided to come clean and expose their corruption, they had Makina kidnapped, to bait out and assassinate her father. After witnessing the kidnappers execute him, she was left there tied up for a week, where she was forced to watch as her father's body slowly rots away. Getting her hospitalised for 6 years.]]
* DiggingYourselfDeeper: Protesting that she knows how to speak properly even if she doesn’t usually choose to, she launches into an anecdote with keigo that swiftly turns quite vulgar.
* DrillSergeantNasty: Yuuji actually rubs this behavior off on her, and she plays an even more vitriolic version than Yuuji.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: [[spoiler:In her good ending, after all the [[TraumaCongaLine hardships she had been put through]], Makina finally achieves her dream of becoming a baker and opening her own business. She also takes Yuuji's place at Ichigaya and becomes the new 9029.]]
* FashionableAsymmetry: Makina’s socks never match.
* FateWorseThanDeath: [[spoiler:On her bad ending, after witnessing Yuuji's death she [[SanitySlippage snaps]], and proceeds keeping his rotting body in a garbage bag, talking to him as he was still alive.]]
* ForcedToWatch: [[spoiler:Makina is forced to watch as her kidnappers kill her father. To add insult to injury, they leave her there for six days to watch as her father's body rots in front of her.]]
* ForcefulKiss: Grateful to Yumiko for [[spoiler:erasing records of Makina and Yuuji’s attendance at Mihama]] Makina instantly leaps on her, pins her down and begins making out with her. Ah, the bonds of female friendship.
* GenkiGirl: She is arguably the most energetic and random member of the cast, often exhausting or exasperating the others - and leaving them dumbstruck with her motor-mouth when she doesn't.
* HeavySleeper: Makina is considered to be possibly narcoleptic. She doesn’t fall heavily asleep, but will simply pass out at the drop of a hat whenever she gets tired and can sleep over half the day quite easily. The doctors just shrugged and said it might be stress-related while Yuuji figures it might be due to her poor physical physique.
* HiddenDepths: In addition to her photographic memory and ability to mimic voices, she produces incredibly artistic sculptures, mostly with Yumiko as a theme.
* IdiotBall: [[spoiler:She gets a rather open moment of stupidity in her own route when she decides to return to a location in which several of her pursuers were severely injured just the previous day in order to retrieve a potted plant of all things. She ends up getting shot for her trouble, and Yuuji gets placed in a rather tough position because of it.]]
* InformedAttribute: Makina is apparently chubby.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Makina knows she’s a spoiled little git a lot of the time, so after her first day of work she decides to head back and share some fresh baked bread she was given after her first day of work as a thank you to everyone.
* {{Kawaiiko}}: Makina has a very cutesy way of speaking.
* LonelyRichKid: [[spoiler:She was born to wealth but isolated from a normal life because of her family's corruption and the general arrogance of her mother. It got even worse when her father was killed]].
* {{Moe}}: InUniverse. Yuuji suspects that Makina acts cutesy, dumb and weak in order to inspire protective feelings in people. He also speculates that it probably gets her bullied by other girls while guys would find it charming. In her route, he more or less falls for it and makes protecting her his duty in life.
* TheNicknamer: She never addresses her friends by their names. Instead, she calls them Sacchin, Chiruchiru, Ama-nee...
* {{Ojou}}: Her family is probably even wealthier and more influential than Yumiko’s. She can’t even ride a bike as a result. Nor does she have a real concrete idea as to the value of money.
* OlderThanSheLooks: Makina is a first-year but looks about twelve at most. In the epilogue for Amane’s route we see her almost ten years in the future and she finally looks about fifteen.
* ParentalAbandonment: [[spoiler:Her mother pretty much cast her aside as trash, and killed Makina's father in the process]].
* PhotographicMemory: When Makina sees something, she stores a perfect copy of it in her brain and can recall it from memory at any time, though her memory can get a little scrambled with time or on the details of ordering. She also skips recording things in color.
* RunningGag: Makina's constant mispronunciation of the word "[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anomalocaris Anomalocaris]]."
* SanitySlippage: In her bad ending, [[spoiler: after Yuuji dies, she keeps his rotting corpse in a garbage bag, talking to him, thinking he's still alive]].
* ShrinkingViolet: Makina hates crowded places and meeting new people, so she’s quite shy around Yuuji at first.
* SkilledButNaive: Makina picks up anything Yuuji has to teach her, [[spoiler:but she forgot the whole point of his self-defense style was evading combat and tries attacking several operatives. She gets shot for her trouble after some brief initial success.]]
* SleepCute: After her first day of real work, Makina falls asleep on a park bench and Yuuji muses that even Asako or JB would look cute when asleep, so he doesn’t really have the heart to move her.
* SmallGirlBigGun: Yuuji starts teaching her sniping with an air rifle. She's actually pretty good at it, though given her weak physique it's difficult for her to carry it well.
* SmarterThanYouLook: Despite her own assumptions, Makina is not stupid. She actually has a photographic memory and it’s hinted she could potentially be an outright genius. However, genius might not really be worth anything, so why bother?
* SomeoneToRememberHimBy: [[spoiler: Played very darkly in Makina's bad ending. She takes Yuuji's place as the new 9029 while pregnant and keeping Yuuji's rotting corpse in a garbage bag.]]
%%* TaremeEyes
* TokenMiniMoe: Makina looks a lot younger than the other girls. Twelve, if you ask Yuuji.
* VerbalTic: She tends to end her sentences with "yo-sa".
* WeakButSkilled: Quite literally. Makina is physically even weaker than you’d expect for someone that looks about twelve, but she picks up on anything Yuuji teaches her regarding exercise, sniping or martial arts almost immediately. Her endurance is still terrible, though.

[[quoteright:230:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sachi_4536.jpg]]
-> Voiced by: Creator/AiShimizu (Credited as: Mikasa Okamura)

A first-year student in Mihama academy, and a self-proclaimed maid. Except when going to school, taking a bath or swimming, she always wears a maid uniform. She said that everyone told her to wear a maid uniform as much as possible. She's incredibly polite and has strong sense of responsibility, never failing to accomplish any request from others. In her dictionary, there are only 3 words: “receive” – “confirm” – “execute”. Because of this, she sometimes takes jokes too seriously and causes a lot of trouble. Her favorite animal is the shark. The shark-shaped pouch which Michiru carries around is made by her.

Her representative fruit is apple.
----
* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler:Sachi's birthday present was watching both her parents be run over by a truck that ran a red light, feeling guilty because they had been looking for her after she stormed out of the house. Combine this with her childhood friend moving away and what was once a peppy, outgoing girl was left a shell-shocked mess who'd locked away all her emotions on the belief that anything less would make her a "bad girl".]]
* BrokenAce: Sachi is intelligent, athletic, dutiful, domestic and even a hard worker. She's also fixed on the idea that she has to listen and obey everything she is told.
* BulletProofVest: One of Sachi’s maid outfits can repel bullets up to 9mm and is also good at deflecting knives, an admitted weakness of most protective gear. When Makina was getting Sachi’s outfits made, she contracted a manufacturer who specialized in military armor.
* CannotKeepASecret: You can ask Sachi to do pretty much anything and she’ll handle it for you, but one thing she can’t seem to do is keep her mouth shut. No matter how much you beg or plead.
* CatchPhrase: ‘The scales have fallen from my eyes’ is an expression that is generally viewed as Sachi’s, though she only uses it about half a dozen times throughout the story, most of them early on.
* CaughtTheHeartOnHisSleeve: At the end of a date with Sachi and Yuuji, she admits that this was probably the happiest day of her life and grabs on to his sleeve since she doesn’t want to go home yet.
* ClassRepresentative: Holds this position due to her diligence and always fulfilling orders.
* ClusterFBomb: When Yuuji criticizes her stamina at pushups, she begins punctuating each rep not with a shout but with violent anti-Japanese cursing. In English.
* CosmeticCatastrophe: When it comes to makeup, only Amane regularly wears any. Yumiko manages to competently apply some when directed, Michiru puts on five different false eyelashes since she thinks they’ll make her look tsundere (but probably really just because she got bored) while Makina looks like a goth clown. Sachi… [[DiscretionShot we don’t get to see]] Sachi’s overwhelming failure because the girls say they would feel bad for Sachi if Yuuji saw her.
* TheComicallySerious: Not only does Sachi do whatever she’s asked completely seriously, but she also has a surprisingly wicked tongue on her.
* CrazyPrepared: Sachi has everything prepared. If asked for something she doesn’t have, she’ll immediately go get it and put it into her specialty storage locker.
* CursedWithAwesome: According to Sachi, her greatest weakness is that she gets weak and fluttery around Yuuji, especially if he pats her head. Naturally, people should overcome their weaknesses meaning he should do it even more often.
* CuttingTheKnot: In Sachi's backstory, she was tasked with canceling a test. Lacking any other means [[spoiler:she set the school on fire.]] When brought up in the present, [[spoiler:fire isn't enough, so they blow up the school instead. However, it's actually just to make Sachi realize she shouldn't be following orders like that by having her destroy something she values.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler: She had a loving family, however once they started to get buried by work they grew distant with each other. Her best friend abruptly left her. On her birthday when her parents tried to throw a party, in a fit of anger at their previous neglecting behavior, she ran away. Just as her parents found her they were run over by a truck right in front of Sachi's eyes, something she convinced herself to be ultimately her fault. Leading to constant PTSD attacks, which she could only cope with by faking a new personality and developing a severe case of OCD. After getting back to a normal school, her OCD made her obey any and all kinds of requests, after getting an order the get rid off a school test, something she could not reasonably fulfill, she set fire to the school.]]
* DroppedABridgeOnHer: [[spoiler:In Sachi's bad end, she comes to grips that in order to escape her PTSD she has to metaphorically "kill" herself, abandon her past's mistakes, and rely on others to help her in the future. She happily leaves the hospital, sees Yuuji across the street, and is prepared to tell him the good news... when she's [[KarmicDeath splattered by a truck running the red light.]]]]
* EngagementChallenge: When she was little, she told Yuuji that she wouldn't marry anyone that couldn't kick their shoes off farther than she could. She was only trying to cover her embarrassment and when it turned out he couldn't do it even when she was going easy on him she regretted coming up with that kind of stupid challenge. [[spoiler:At the end of the story they try again... and he still loses.]]
* {{Expy}}:
** Sachi seems to have a strong basis in the character of [[VisualNovel/{{Tsukihime}} Hisui]]. They have the same eye and hair colors, both dress as maids and have similar attitudes. [[spoiler:More tellingly, however, is that the personalities of have taken the same one eight turn from being a GenkiGirl when they were the friend of the main character to near EmotionlessGirl.]]
** Her backstory is very similar to Kotomi Ichinose from ''VisualNovel/{{CLANNAD}}''. [[spoiler: She lost her parents on her birthday after saying that she hated them and has also been trying to be a "good girl", though Kotomi plunges herself into her studies instead of becoming an ExtremeDoormat like Sachi does. Both girls struggle with the guilt over their PartingWordsRegret before receiving a gift years later that shows how much their parents really loved them. She's also revealed to a be a childhood friend of the protagonist.]]
* ExtremeDoormat: Sachi will do absolutely anything you ask her to. She has not refused a request once in the entire time she’s gone to Mihama. Even joking requests are taken absolutely seriously, which can even put her in danger. She actively shies away from making her own decisions or setting the goals or actions of the group. After awhile it's hinted that a really troublesome order will be interpreted in a convenient way if possible, but that's it.
* ForgottenFirstMeeting: Sachi was Yuuji’s OnlyFriend before his life turned to complete shit. She remembers, he doesn’t.
* GenkiGirl: [[spoiler: Until the accident that killed her father and put her mother into a coma.]]
* HarmfulToMinors: [[spoiler:Both of Sachi’s parents were run over by a car right in front of her. What’s worse is that they had spent the whole day looking for her after she spurned their attempt to spend the day with her after a long period of really busy work.]]
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:She suffers one when first watching her parents be mowed down, and then again when her mother speaks her last words]].
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Michiru. See her section above.
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: Sachi wears a maid outfit because the other girls jokingly suggested she should. Building on that, after Yuuji makes a comment in passing about underwear, she comes to school wearing nothing else and seems slightly confused that the other girls take issue with it.
* InsultBackfire: Sachi has an odd way of taking sarcastic comments as genuine compliments
** When Yuuji sarcastically compares her devotion to wearing maid outfits to a nun in a bar wearing a bunny girl outfit, she’s genuinely pleased.
** When he calls her a shark fanatic, she’s outright thrilled.
* IsItSomethingYouEat: What is a wokaybokay? Sachi seems to feel that it would taste good and smell like curry.
* LieBackAndThinkOfEngland: Makina’s advice when she begins stripping off Sachi’s underwear.
* LiteralMinded: Sachi has a way of reading everything in a very direct way. Considering she also has an unrelated issue with following every order she’s told to follow, she can end up doing some pretty strange things that no one intended. She refuses to call Michiru anything but her name with a -sama on it much to her horror since she hadn’t been serious when she made the request but phrased it too strongly.
* {{Meido}}: Sachi wears a maid outfit around all the time because first someone said it would look good on her and then declared that it did indeed look good. It might be rubbing off on her since she acts like a maid as well.
* MellowFellow: Sachi’s mood never varies from a low-level polite friendliness. No anger, no joy, no sadness, no stress. It starts to worry Yuuji.
* MyGreatestFailure: [[spoiler: After her previously caring parents grow distant to her, being buried by work, Sachi doubles her effort both in school and home the earn their attention, but with little success. An entire year of neglect later at her 10th birthday, her parents seemingly come around suddenly, which angers Sachi and she runs away. Just when her parents find her at the local playground, they are ran over by a truck right in front of Sachi's eyes. She convinces that it was her fault, for not being reasonable, and thoughing out the neglect, this belief leads to severe mental issues for her.]]
* NoSenseOfHumor: Sachi cannot tell when someone is making fun of her or telling a joke.
* PuppyLove: She had a pretty serious crush on Yuuji when he was a kid. It might have gone somewhere, except his life sort of went downhill before much longer.
* RoseHairedSweetie: She's got rosy-pink hair and [[ExtremeDoormat never refuses anyone's requests]].
* StepfordSmiler: [[spoiler:Yuuji realizes Sachi is this in her route; she never smiles out of actual happiness or affection as opposed to a means of facilitating a polite response]].
* SurvivorGuilt: [[spoiler:The reason for Sachi's robot-like personality; she carries extreme guilt over the belief her parents died because she selfishly threw a tantrum, so she has resolved to be a "good girl" that never disobeys and is never selfish in order to cope]].
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: Sachi denies being flabby or embarrassed five times in about twenty words.
* TraumaCongaLine: Her parents death may have been the cause of all the trauma she lived through, but far from their end.
%%* TaremeEyes
* WhatIsThisFeeling: When Sachi begins to develop an attraction to Yuuji, she doesn’t really get why she’s acting differently around him. Nor any of the other complex emotions she’s locked away.
* {{Workaholic}}: She'll do whatever you ask of her, to the point where she would leave school to take a trip to Hokkaido in search of the "freshest" milk.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She has pink hair.

! Supporting Characters

[[folder:Julia Bardera/Harudera Yuria]]
[[quoteright:249:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/e4785563acfc8108d642525a903368a9.png]]
-> Voiced by: Erika Narumi

Yuria Harudera, better known as JB, is Yuuji's superior and something of a mother figure to him. She's his legal guardian, but she also enjoys flirting with him or teasing him in public in an attempt to irritate him. Not that she's being sadistic: It's revenge more than anything thanks to his own sarcastic attitude towards her. Though she works for the same 'company' that Yuuji does, it's noted that because she's in management her own hands are kept essentially clean.

Despite their bickering, she supports Yuuji one hundred percent, even when she isn't supposed to.
----
* BeautyMark: Has one right below her left eye.
* BenevolentBoss: Though it is less visible than most cases. Namely, she takes a lot of flak and defends Yuuji from complaints from the higher-ups.
* ButNotTooForeign: Averted. One might assume that based on her appearance and excellent proficiency in Japanese, JB must be half-Japanese and half-American. However it turns out that both are false. She's actually half-German and half-Italian with no trace of Japanese or American blood in her, making her a pure-blood European. She just happens to be a Japanese citizen because of her job position over at Ichigaya.
* CatchPhrase: "You've got a job, Yuuji."
* CoolCar: She drives a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrari_F430 Ferrari F430]] in Giallo Modena. In ''Rakuen'', she gets her hands on a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_911_GT3#997.2_GT3_RS Porsche 911 GT3 RS]] that's been seemingly been completely repainted in Guards Red[[note]]Guards Red was not an available paintjob for ''any'' of the 997-series [=GT3=] RS models.[[/note]]
* DumbBlonde: Invoked, but ultimately subverted.
* GagBoobs: ''She's even bigger than [[UpToEleven Amane]]''.
* IgnoredExpert: JB’s boss Otsuka completely ignores all her objections when it comes to [[spoiler:tracking down Yuuji after he goes rogue]] in Makina’s route. If people actually listened to her, [[spoiler:Yuuji would have been caught fairly quickly or at least wouldn’t have caused so many casualties.]] To an extent, anyway, [[spoiler:since Yuuji can trick her too. Just not as easily.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Despite often ribbing Yuuji and deliberately teasing him in such a way as to cause misunderstandings, she genuinely cares about Yuuji's well-being.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: She acts like an airhead but is shown to be very observant.
* ParentalSubstitute: For Yuuji after the death of his master.
* SexySecretary: Heavily invoked by her look.
* ShipTease: Often has genuine moments of total sweetness whenever Yuuji (without her knowledge) falsely compliments her, only to follow it up with a snarky comment, which she then responds to with a fluster. Despite these moments, she has no route in the game, [[TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter much to the chagrin of fans]].
* StatuesqueStunner: She's nearly as tall as Yuuji.
* TheTease: JB enjoys publicly flirting with Yuuji and is actually much better at it than Amane. For her, the goal isn't to embarrass him with her actions or what she says but instead to give his classmates the wrong idea about their relationship and make Yuuji squirm.
* {{Tsundere}}: Mild case; she often denies that her actions are out of any kind of concern for Yuuji or out of kindness, citing some professional reason or another.
* VitriolicBestBuds: The only way to describe her relationship with Yuuji. They will bicker, tease and insult each other, but it's clear that they care for each other at some level.

[[folder:Tachibana Chizuru]]
[[quoteright:249:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9e650fae8ce938d33e4ee13456d3d146.png]]
-> Voiced by: Creator/NatsumiYanase (Credited as: Izumi Maki)

Chizuru Tachibana is the principal of the school and a former acquaintance of Yuuji's. Though uninvolved in his work, he saved her once and to repay the favor she offered him a place at her school as no other school could accept someone with his background and emotional issues. Yuuji seems quite fond of teasing her, which has led to her getting rather snappish around him despite her gratitude and affection.

Despite being around thirty, she looks approximately the same age as her students and frequently acts about as maturely as they do as well, up to and including being quite susceptible to Yuuji's flattery and flirting.
----

* {{Buttmonkey}}: Chizuru appears less often Michiru, the usual butt of jokes, but when she does most of the conversation will end up being a barrage of jokes at her expense.
* ChristmasCake: Chizuru is still single, a bit of a prickly issue for her. She and Yumiko share a moment reflecting on this in the common route since she can see Yumiko ending up the same way if she keeps being too timid around Yuuji.
* ADateWithRosiePalms: Though he doesn’t appear to have caught on, Yuuji clearly walks in on Chizuru doing something similar when he barges in intending to ask permission for the class to go to the beach.
* DudeShesLikeInAComa: Pretends to be asleep in order to try tempting Yuuji into trying something.
* GratuitousEnglish: If you have Chizuru set as the HUD system voice, then she'll say "Game Over" when you're about to quit the visual novel.
* HotForStudent: She tends to respond well to Yuuji even fake flirting with her and Amane drags her into the strategy meeting in Makina’s route reserved for girls with an interest in Yuuji. Sachi’s information on her behavior is embarrassingly thorough.
%%* OdangoHair
* OlderThanSheLooks: The principal is about thirty, but looks and frequently acts about as mature as Michiru. Yuuji makes a quip about it once and Chizuru, conditioned to snap back at teasing, takes the bait. Yuuji more or less rolls his eyes and says most women would be pleased to still look that young at her age.
* OldMaid: Accidentally outs herself as a virgin when trying to make Amane not assume that she’ll find someone to go out with pretty soon.
* PantyShot: The first CG image you come across in the common route gives you a good ant's eye view of her panties within her ProperTightsWithASkirt.
* ProperTightsWithASkirt: Only noticeable in the first CG image of the common route.

! Other Characters

[[folder:Kazami Kazuki]]
[[quoteright:230:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/345610_screenshots_20160926120316_1.jpg]]

Kazuki Kazami is Yuuji's deceased sister. When he was in elementary school, she was pronounced dead during a nasty accident. Unlike Yuuji, she was noted to be a genius and exceptionally talented at almost everything, though she was quite small. While the rest of the family abused or ignored him, Kazuki loved her brother a great deal. In fact, they were close enough to worry Kazuki's only real friend, who had to gently inform her that normal sisters don't play with their brothers like that.

Yuuji notes that Kazuki usually had on a rather sleepy expression in contrast to her sharp attitude and keen intellect. She was very calm and focused, but also clinical and detached even during serious situations.

----
* ACupAngst: [[spoiler:In Amane’s flashback,]] she basically said she declined to offer joint bathing because the comparison between the two would depress her. Mind you, this was during early middle school. [[spoiler:She was just making excuses, though, and was secretly building a stash in the woods.]]
* CannotTellAJoke: She could not tell a funny joke to save her life. Delivery, timing and content were entirely warped.
* ChildProdigy: Kazuki was smart enough to be viewed by Yuuji as one of the few true geniuses, though she also gave him the impression that it's probably not really worth it. She could memorize books as images and read them in her head later, was an instant expert at most things she tried and was a very clever planner.
* DeclarationOfProtection: [[spoiler: Kazuki repeatedly says that she'll save Amane from their situation, even if it costs her own life, during Amane's flashback.]]
* GenderBlenderName: Yuuji’s sister was called Kazuki, a fairly masculine name, something a certain classmate picked up on.
* InsufferableGenius: In the only real flashback scene we have of Yuuji’s sister, she was undeniably a genius and undeniably abrasive and disinterested. Her attitude was less ‘I am awesome’ and more ‘You all suck’ which really irritated [[spoiler:Amane Suou]], who interacted with her the most during said flashback.
* MotorMouth: Whenever Kazuki feels flustered or embarrassed, she'll burst into an overly long retort and say it really fast without pausing to take a breath until she finishes the entire speech. [[spoiler:Amane]] even points it out to her afterward.
* NeverFoundTheBody: Or rather ‘found the body, but not all of it.’ Namely, [[spoiler:Kazuki’s head was never discovered and she had a little trick to make it seems like there was one more of something than there appeared. Unfortunately, due to a random interruption Amane and Yuuji never bother to investigate.]] Though it is revealed in Amane's bad ending that [[spoiler:Kazuki survived and wandered off]].
* TheNotLoveInterest: While there's certainly other [[LesYay implications]] to their relationship, it's clear that Kazuki was the most important person to Amane's backstory and vice versa.
* PosthumousCharacter: Yuuji mentions a few times that his sister was a genius, but she was declared dead about half a dozen years ago following a nasty accident that left only one survivor. [[spoiler:In Amane's bad end, we find out she survived at least long enough to leave a note and knife for Amane in case she ever came back.]]
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Kazuki tended towards InsufferableGenius, but was quite supportive of the people she did care about. Of course, the flip side is the implication that [[spoiler:she didn't care one way or the other if every other girl in the crash died apart from Amane, her only friend.]]

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kusakabe Asako]]

Asako was Yuuji's former master. After spotting him in a lineup, she declared that he could still be saved and took him under her wing and began raising him. She was both harsh and sweet, capable and incompetent and drilled many of her own values into Yuuji. Thanks to her job of bringing him up, he can at least act normal, but now possesses a strong wariness for the horrors of large women.

Asako is deceased before the story begins and does not appear even in flashbacks in ''Kajitsu'', leaving most information about her to be picked up secondhand from her friend JB or Yuuji himself. Her story is fleshed out in Labyrinth of Grisaia.
----
* LethalChef: She couldn't even make fried rice, making her the only woman Yuuji knows who was completely and utterly incompetent at cooking.
* ParentalSubstitute: Yuuji doesn't think of her as a mother figure, but admits that she did more or less play the role for him. His actual mother was a weak woman who could do nothing but apologize.
* PosthumousCharacter: She died before the story began, but the circumstances aren't elaborated on.

[[folder:Irisu Kiyoka]]
[[quoteright:210:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/345610_screenshots_20160926120055_1.jpg]]

Makina's mother and the current head of the Irisu clan. She's a rather unpleasant person beneath some superficial politeness and is only referenced in passing during the main story, which Makina says her mother hates her. Yuuji does not contest the claim, which earns him some measure of trust from Makina.
----
* {{Abusive Parent|s}}: Kiyoka’s only reaction to [[spoiler:Makina not waking up in the hospital after being shot]] is that at least she doesn’t have to deal with her now. [[spoiler:Further reflection has her considering stripping Makina’s organs to save the other daughter she doesn’t care about and taking away Makina’s life support.]]
* AintTooProudToBeg: In the anime [[spoiler: she completely breaks down and pleads for mercy from Yuuji after he corners her in her office and shoots her in the leg. He has none and promptly fills her with lead.]]
* AxCrazy: The fact that she’s so cavalier about murder shows that there’s something fundamentally broken inside her head.
* BigBad: Of Makina's route.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Kiyoka is polite, but little more. Her speech contains veiled threats and a rather penetrating attitude. With a smile, she admits that she was hoping he would accept the souvenir she offered and get halfway home before realizing it was nothing but a veiled insult.
* EvilInc: The company she and her family runs is so shady, they're willing to organize assassinations for those who attempt to expose them, [[spoiler:as Makina's father Masataka found out the hard way]]. Granted, the exact details of their operations are never known but the fact that they're hiring all sorts of assassins ranging from low-life gangsters to highly-ranked military agents to even the CIA itself shows just how wicked and corrupt they are. [[spoiler:When they finally hire Ichigaya to assassinate Makina, things just got really serious for Yuuji to the point of outright desertion.]]
* FauxAffablyEvil: She’s polite when it comes to conversation but considering the fact that she peppers her dialogue with either death threats or dickish insults along with her actions, it’s clear that she’s nothing but a petty sociopath.
* HateSink: Kiyoka is completely devoid of any redeeming characteristics and easily set up as someone completely hateful. Many people hate her so much that they get the Makina bad end [[spoiler:just so they can see her die.]]
* {{Jerkass}}: According to her own daughter, Kiyoka is nothing but a nasty little kid that never grew up and casually contemplates or orders murders.
* KarmaHoudini: [[spoiler:Kiyoka gets away with everything in Makina’s good ending. True, she’s now vulnerable to blackmail by Ichigaya and can’t interfere with Yuuji or Makina anymore, but that’s not going to stop her from being an evil bitch in the future. The anime adaptation changes the course of events, ending with Yuuji killing her and getting away alive and unnoticed.]]
* LackOfEmpathy: Kiyoka doesn’t really allow emotions any say in her actions or even analysis. Her daughter is a pawn at best, a threat at worst. Since Kiyoka is not exactly the nicest person, ‘at worst’ generally directs her behavior.
* OffingTheOffspring: She states at one point that she doesn’t really care whether Sarina or Makina inherit from her, [[spoiler:and may have been responsible or knowledgeable about the attack on Sarina and definitely tries to have Makina assassinated.]]
* OhCrap: When [[spoiler:Yuuji breaks into her office]] her smug composure finally drops.
* OlderThanSheLooks: Kiyoka has the same kind of youthful appearance as her daughter and a voice that Yuuji assumes belongs to someone ten years younger than her minimum plausible age.
* PsychopathicWomanchild
--> '''Makina''': "Probably not somethin’ her own daughter should be sayin’, but my mom’s basically a nasty little kid who never grew up."
* TheSociopath: Superficial in charm, cares little to nothing for anyone outside of herself, and at times needlessly sadistic.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Irisu Masataka]]

Makina's father. He was assassinated around eight years ago for attempting to divulge the corrupt practices of the Irisu family. He was the only honest executive of the company and the only member of Makina's family that cared about her.
----
* AuthorityInNameOnly: In theory, he should have been one of the most important executives for the group. In practice, he was sidelined and kept from doing anything genuinely important.
* GoOutWithASmile: Masataka was shot five or six times, but remained conscious and lucid enough to chat with his daughter and actually smiled before dying. All in all a clean death, but then she was left with him for almost a week. In midsummer.
* HeKnowsTooMuch: Makina’s father was assassinated because he was going to make information on the Irisu family public, which would be a liability to a lot of people.
* HonorBeforeReason: His attempts to fight and expose Irisu corruption result in him being killed and orphaning his daughter. In his last moments he goes so far as to refuse kidnappers who offer him another way to save himself and his daughter, because it would go against his principles. And Makina pays dearly for that.
* ImColdSoCold: When dying, Masataka just laughed a little and said he didn’t get much sleep the night before, so he was going to take a little nap. It took a few days before Makina would admit to herself that he wasn't just sleeping.
* NiceGuy: The story calls him weak, but he was a very moral man who was only trapped because his daughter was taken hostage.
* PosthumousCharacter: He was assassinated years ago and only appears in one flashback.

[[folder:Chiara Farrell]]
[[quoteright:230:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/345610_screenshots_20160926131216_1.jpg]]

JB's assistant. Much to JB's irritation, she is yet another of the annoying people that like to gather around her and pick on her. Despite that, she is very loyal and devoted. Yuuji only meets her in Makina's route, where he muses that she has a nice butt.
----

* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: Near the end of Makina’s route on either ending, Chiara briefly wishes she could be the overseer for the next agent 9029. She finds herself regretting it when [[spoiler:the next agent is Makina, annoying as ever. Or in the bad end, annoying as ever and absolutely insane.]]
* ButNotTooForeign: Chiara looks exotic enough that Yuuji can’t pin down her ancestry, but she’s (somehow) 2/3 Japanese and 1/3 African.
* TheGadfly: She really likes teasing JB or mocking JB's annoying boss.
* TheKnightsWhoSaySquee: Apparently, Yuuji (or rather, operate 9029) has his own fangirl in the form of JB’s assistant.

* {{Abusive Parent|s}}: [[spoiler:Michiaki neglected Yumiko at first because she was a girl and thus was unfit to inherit his company, sending her off to her uncaring grandparents without batting much of an eye. However when a newborn male inheritor unexpectedly died, he had no choice but to accept Yumiko as his future heir and he would stop at nothing to make that a reality. Even if it meant breaking her mentally and emotionally.]]
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:After being outwitted and beaten by Yuuji, Michiaki’s world collapses and he tries to understand the suffering he put his wife and daughter through. To his dismay, he simply can’t do it. All his empathy was burned away thanks to his own father. In her good end, Sakaki resolves to help him get better, and even in her bad end it's implied he manages to mellow out a bit.]]
* BigBad: The main antagonist of Yumiko's route.
* CorruptCorporateExecutive: [[spoiler:As an extension of his father's original goal, his ultimate goal was to expand his economic "empire" so that it can practically control Japan itself, and he wants to make Yumiko into his puppet and have her become the future heir to his company.]]
* EyesAlwaysShut: Except for a few instances where he's shocked or angry.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He seems to be a genuinely nice guy with a calm demeanor and reassuring smile when meeting with Chizuru. However Yumiko's route reveals [[spoiler:that it is far from the case. Even the kindness he was giving to Yumiko was just an act in hopes of mending her as a tool for his company.]]
* GenerationXerox: [[spoiler:According to Michiaki, his father was the exact same way he is before inheriting the company and he was hoping for his daughter Yumiko to follow his exact example. Unfortunately for him, Yumiko completely rejects the notion and is determined to not follow in her father's footsteps.]]
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:Implied in Yumiko's good ending. After some therapy at the hospital with Yumiko's and Yuuji's help, he has gotten better and is even mentioned to spend some time with their new daughter Yuma.]]
* {{Jerkass}}: Michiaki is a domineering, corrupt businessman [[spoiler:who tries to manipulate his daughter with fake kidnapping attempts followed by real ones when Yuuji defends Yumiko properly.]]

[[folder:The Unnamed Girl]]
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/345610_screenshots_20160926214538_1.jpg]]

A girl Michiru met on the roof of her previous school who was just about to commit suicide by jumping over the fence. After calling out to her to not jump, Michiru introduces herself to the girl and she laughs, resulting in the two becoming best friends and hanging out together. However the circumstances behind her attempted suicide was soon revealed to be something even more problematic, putting more pressure on her to finish what she started and end her life.
----

* CompensatedDating: Strongly implied. She seems to have fallen in love with a man who was making her into his mistress and forcing her to have sex with other men by preying on her emotions. This caused rumors of her to spread around the school and Michiru eventually found out about it when she found a naked photograph of the girl on her desk.
* DrivenToSuicide: Michiru talks her out of it at first because she felt envious of the girl's courage to do so. But after introducing herself, the girl decides to have a second chance at life and becomes Michiru's friend. This doesn't last however as the pressure from her strained relationship eventually pushes her to succeed in ending her life, and not even Michiru's own words were enough to save her that time.
%%* IdiotHair
* NoNameGiven: The girl is never shown to introduce herself back so we never know her name. She is only referred to as "Girl" in both the visual novel and the anime. [[spoiler: Her counterpart in ''Idol Magical Girl Chiru Chiru Michiru'' finally gets a name, as well as a happier ending.]]
* PosthumousCharacter: She committed suicide during Michiru's backstory thanks to a combination of factors including the abusive relationship she was in. [[spoiler:However later in Michiru's route when Michiru's in the casket, we see the girl again in what appears to be her lingering spirit in the form of a purple shadow. Whether this was a real brush with the afterlife or just a figment of Michiru's imagination is up in the air.]]
* SurrealHorror: [[spoiler:In the visual novel, the girl's spirit is just a featureless purple shadow and part of Michiru's imagination, but in the anime, she appears as she once has but with black scribbled lines over a horribly scarred face.]]
* YouthfulFreckles: In-between her eyes.

[[folder:Amane's Basketball Team]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/345610_screenshots_20160930134522_1.jpg]]

A group of female students and one teacher who got into an accident when their bus went off the road during a school trip. Amane was among them and was the only one to get back to safety. While a few girls were killed when the bus went off the road, the others survived and lived through worsening conditions for several weeks. Their eventual fates played a large role in Amane's current emotional trauma.

List of known members:
* '''Chiaki Sakashita''' (The team captain.)
* '''Ritsu Koide'''
* '''Haruna Ibuki'''
* '''Saaya Kaneda''' (A girl who survived the crash with only a minor laceration to her forehead.)
* '''Tamaki Hirooka''' (A girl who survived the crash with broken legs.)
* '''Megumi Komori''' (Made it through the crash uninjured along with her dog Alione, which required a special diet.)
* '''Mifuyu Sakurai''' (Survived the crash with a long, shallow cut on her stomach.)
* '''Minori Sakuma'''
* '''Tsukasa Shikanai''' (Killed in the initial crash.)
* '''Youko Ozama''' (Killed in the initial crash.)
* '''Tomoe Okabe''' (Severely wounded from the crash and dies minutes later.)
* '''Yoshihiko Ochi''' (The teacher and the only male member of the team.)
----

* BolivianArmyEnding: To an extent. We know that they all died eventually, but the story counts out partway through when Amane left the group on her own. The final fates of the remaining girls is not elaborated on until Rakuen.
* BoyishShortHair: Sakuma's hair is short enough that she could easily pass off as a boy.
* TheComicallySerious: Ibuki, who's always cynical about things and won't even take jokes at face value, even from her partner Sakuma. [[spoiler:At least before malnutrition sets in and makes her delusional.]]
* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler:After her dog dies from starvation and the team [[EatTheDog eats it as food]], Komori becomes so distraught about it that she starts "talking to her dog with her dead cell phone" and eats a flower that renders her sick. She eventually hangs herself from a tree.]]
* TheLeader: Even though Ochi was the teacher, Sakashita was the team captain and has a firm sense of responsibility, so the group defaults to following her commands, though she does have a short temper. However, much to her irritation, [[spoiler:Kazuki]] was probably a more competent leader and intended to quietly defy her authority whenever her opinion disagreed with the captain's, which divided the group.
* TheMedic: Averted with Koide, who despite her own parents being experts in the medical field, has no such medical experience herself so she is unable to treat her wounded classmates. [[spoiler:Kazuki]] has some knowledge on how to treat the wounded based on her time reading books, but despite her efforts, there was no medicine available to apply proper treatment and combat the bacterial infections.
* PosthumousCharacter: Officially, they all died during the crash apart from Amane, though the bodies were chopped into pieces [[spoiler:by the teacher to hide that the girls had resorted to cannibalism]], making it unclear as to whether they're ''all'' dead. Only a few died in the crash itself, but the lack of food and minor injuries grew worse with time without treatment.
* PottyFailure: Hirooka soils herself in her sleeping bag because she can no longer move with her broken legs. She was too embarrassed to tell anyone she needed help, which left her to stew in her own filth because no one realized.
* SanitySlippage: As the situation went downhill, illness and stress eventually caused deterioration among the girl's mental health, including delusions, semi-conscious states, and bizarre quirks. [[spoiler:Eventually, it reaches the point where the girls begin to eat one of the dead girls out of fear of starvation and when Kazuki and Amane don't eat and figure out where the meat really came from, several girls turn on them and try to kill them to keep the secret.]]
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Komori has blue hair, Ibuki has green hair, Kaneda has pinkish-red hair, Hirooka has magenta hair, and Sakurai has violet hair.

[[quoteright:260:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/345610_screenshots_20161001193823_1.jpg]]

Chiaki Sakashita's father who'd recently became unemployed after his company went bankrupt. After losing everything, including his own daughter in the bus crash, he snapped and decided he had to avenge his daughter's death.
----

* AxCrazy: As Yuuji describes it, Keiji's a borderline lunatic who's idea of "retribution" is anything but. And in an ironic twist, Amane describes him as a "ghoul". NotSoDifferent from how Kazuki described his own daughter when she went crazy.
* BoomHeadshot: [[spoiler:In Amane's bad ending, his head gets blown off by his own shotgun when Yuuji got his hands on it as vengeance for him shooting, and killing Amane in front of him.]]
* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler:After Yuuji knocks Keiji unconscious and subdues him in Amane's good ending, he reports it to JB who later calls him over to give him the news that he committed suicide at a hospital. However Yuuji, being the clever person he is, doesn't buy it because he knows that's just a cover-up. While Keiji's fate is unknown, it's likely that Ichigaya just captured him and executed him behind the scenes.]]
* EyeScream: Yuuji disables him by [[spoiler:plowing his fingers into his eye socket and squeezing his eye,]] causing him to be disoriented.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: When Keiji first meets Yuuji in the shopping district, he introduces himself as "Sakashita". By this point, you should already know that Chiaki Sakashita was the team captain of Amane's basketball team, giving you a hint that he's related to Chiaki in some way. This would prove correct a scene later when he reveals he's Chiaki's father and hell bent on revenge against Amane.
* OhCrap: His reaction once he realizes [[spoiler:he's been lured into a trap by Yuuji.]]
* ShotgunsAreJustBetter: Or worse in this situation. He wields a double-barreled shotgun which he uses to go outright TriggerHappy on Amane and Yuuji when the two visit the crash site now turned into a memorial. He ends up shooting Yuuji in his right shoulder upon encounter, and in Amane's bad ending, [[spoiler:he shoots Amane in her stomach.]]
* StartOfDarkness: The death of his daughter Chiaki slowly started a downward spiral into madness that would linger through most his life until he finally decides on the answer to his troubles: Amane.

[[folder:Michiru route spoiler character]]

Michiru's [[SplitPersonality other personality]] who always shows up whenever she suffers from anxiety. Unlike the original, this Michiru is much calmer and seemingly more intelligent, generally taking control whenever Michiru is about to undergo a panic attack and cleaning the situation up for her. She's trying to help, but Michiru finds this extremely disturbing whenever she becomes aware of it. [[spoiler:In the Manga adaptation of Michiru's route, her name is given as Lisa]].
----

* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler:Apparently when hospitalized, the girl was still conscious and completely aware of what's going on. She tried futilely calling back to her parents when they visited but it was obviously all in vain since her body can no longer function. And she had been like this for months before her operation to remove her heart.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: Turns out she has a rather sharp tongue herself, so she's able to counter Yuuji's TheGadfly tendencies and get straight to the point regarding him and the original Michiru.
* NoNameGiven: The girl's real name is never mentioned in the original VN and she is only referred to in-game as the "other" Michiru. However, fans like to simply call her "[[FanNickname Heart Donor Girl]]" so as to easily distinguish her from the original Michiru.
** [[spoiler:Subverted in the Manga adaptation; she not only gets a [[http://2.p.mpcdn.net/27890/638680/28.jpg name]], but her [[http://2.p.mpcdn.net/27890/638680/34.jpg original appearance]] is shown in the final page]].
* ObfuscatingStupidity: This girl makes it very clear that she doesn't want to stick out with her personality and make everyone, including the Mihama girls, suspicious. So whenever the original suffers from anxiety and she is forced to take over, she mimics the original's personality right down to her airheaded nature as to avoid complicated issues. Unfortunately, this does not fool Yuuji for too long and he eventually finds out about her through his keen observations.
* PosthumousCharacter: We never really get to see her personally or even find out her name. All that's known about her is that she was a comatose American girl who was hospitalized as a result of a traffic accident and had her heart donated to Michiru when there was no more hope of her recovery. So in a sense, this girl is already dead but her personality and thoughts are still retained in her heart via a phenomenon called "cellular memory".
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to original Michiru's red. Unlike the cheerful, energetic, and dimwitted original, this Michiru is calm, stern, and able to bring up a lot of philosophical topics that makes her appear smarter by comparison.
* SharingABody: She lives in Michiru's body after the transplant and ''can'' take control of her whenever she wants, but generally will not unless necessary. [[spoiler:In the final parts of her route, Michiru comes to term with her and they decide to live in the body together.]]
* TheStoic: She's pretty gloomy and depressive, though whether that's because of her situation or how she is normally is unclear.

''VisualNovel/TheFruitOfGrisaia'' is the first of a series of Visual Novels by Front Wing. Unlike the later novels, it serves mostly to introduce the cast and is mostly a school based romance with only occasional hints as to Yuuji's true profession and life.

----
[[foldercontrol]]

! Main Characters

* FacePalm:
* IgnoreTheFanservice:

* IHaveBoobsYouMustObey:
** Attempted, but Yuuji couldn’t care less about Amane’s boobs.
** Yuuji convinces her to, well, act like she normally does in the shopping district in order to get Makina a part time job at the bakery.
* InSeriesNickname: [[spoiler: Cockroach]]

-> Voiced by: Creator/TomoeTamiyasu

[[folder:Komine Sachi]]

* {{Expy}}:

-> Voiced by: Erika Narumi

* CatchPhrase: "You've got a job, Yuuji."

[[/folder]]

* BigBad: Of Makina's route.
* PsychopathicWomanchild

[[folder:Sakaki Michiaki]]
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/345610_screenshots_20160926121515_1.jpg]]

Yumiko's father, the president of the East Beach Railway Express Group, and the founder of Mihama Academy. Yumiko seems to bear ill will against him and refuses to get involved with him whenever he is brought up.
----

* YouthfulFreckles: In-between her eyes.

* '''Ritsu Koide'''
* '''Haruna Ibuki'''
* '''Minori Sakuma'''

[[folder:Sakashita Keiji]]
