The protagonist of the series. His sarcasm and friendly demeanor are one of the many things that help him keep going.

* ArchEnemy: Carl with Gooper. Carl seems to be the only one who actually stands up to Gooper, while Gooper takes his grudge against Carl on a more personal level than just another kid to mess with.
* AerithAndBob: The four main protagonists of the series are Blooper, Boo, Dry Bones, and Carl. That naming pattern totally breaks the flow to say the least.
* {{Angst}}: Besides his snarky personality, this is the most important aspect of Carl's character.
* AntiHero: While Carl is generally well-meaning, he isn't above breaking the law or following his own rules. He has displayed several impulses and tends to express cynicism. Even so, Carl is a sweet boy who tries his best to do the right thing.
* BadassNormal: Carl isn't a skeleton who holds a giant bone like a sword, a ghost who could phase through walls, or a cephalopod who can squirt ink, but frankly, he has the most competent fighting skills out of the main four.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He may be a pacifist at first glance. But piss him off and you'll get a bloody nose!
* BigBrotherInstinct: Mess with his little sisters and you're gonna get it.
* BreakTheCutie: On occasion.
** In "The School Dance", after being convinced that Grace already liked Gooper by Liam and Bob, he was utterly disraught, losing all confidence. Afterward, Carl isolates himself in his room for three days. Dang, the alleged information of Grace, his dearest love interest, already falling for Gooper, his worst bully, all this time really shattered his heart. It was so devastating, that he started to grow a beard.
* BrutalHonesty: He's extremely sarcastic, especially towards Dry Bones and Calvin. He doesn't tone down any flaw he sees in a hasty person.
* BullyMagnet: Poor Carl is always on the receiving end of Gooper and his gang's wrath. To add insult to injury, he's a frequent victim to some of his more villainous peers.
* ButtMonkey: In the earlier episodes, he was constantly bullied by everybody and had to deal with his strict stepfather.
* ByronicHero: Carl isn't above joining everybody else's hijinks and typically, he is rebellious against his parents. Even so, both his family and his peers are constantly displaying how dimwitted and selfish they really can be. Carl is frequently the sanest character in the bunch and saying he isn't a victim under extreme abuse is a blatant lie.
* CannotSpitItOut: His crush on Grace during the first two seasons is summed up as this. Funnily enough, Grace felt the same way about him but couldn't bring herself to say it either. They eventually became a couple in the Season 2 finale.
* CantStandThemCantLiveWithoutThem: His relationship with Dry Bones. "Civil War" demonstrates this the most, where Dry Bones and Carl fought and decided to go separate ways after Dry Bones crashes Carl's car and the latter gotten punished for it. Both Dry Bones and Carl are proven miserable without each others' company and the two later reunite.
* ChallengingTheBully: When push comes to shove, it really is the last straw! For example, it's a common sight to see Carl beating up Gooper and the gang on occasion.
* CharacterDevelopment: Started as shy and rather insecure, but became more outgoing and confident as the series went on.
* TheChewToy: In earlier episodes.
* CoolLoser: He may be a dork but he is bold and very well-meaning.
* CowardlyLion: He usually is paranoid and shy, especially when it comes to the instances Gooper and his gang confront him. However, Carl can also deliver some mean punches if pushed over the limit. Gooper has learned this the hard way a few times.
* CrazyJealousGuy: He can become rather contentious when it comes to Grace. For instance, in "Summer of '19", he whacked Leon Slater with a bar-stool when he brags about taking his girlfriend.
* CuteClumsyGirl: GenderInverted and {{Downplayed}}. Sometimes, he trips on himselff and acts a little too goofy, though Grace strongly admires him.
* DeadpanSnarker: While every character in the [=FreezeFlame=]22 universe is naturally sarcastic, Carl Mitchell is without a doubt the best example this series has to offer.
* {{Determinator}}: No matter the circumstances, he will push through to achieve his goals.
* DisappearedDad: Carl never met his biological father as he left him and his mother before he was born.
* TheDogBitesBack: He has snapped at Gooper and put him in stitches a few times.
** In "Carl's Sisters", when Gooper and his gang threatened Carrie and Sally, he made them regret picking on his younger sisters. He basically disintegrated Gooper with a blowtorch in particular.
** He finally stoop up to Gooper in "The School Dance" and quite literally kicks him to the curve.
** Throughout "2020", he gives the Gooper gang a taste of their own medicine. Specifically, he smacked Liam with a beer bottle, knocked Flaig's tooth out, delivered nasty blows to the gang members, and punched Gooper right in the face.
* DorkKnight: In modern times, he's recognizable for being a confident, bold, occasionally aggressive yet socially-powerful high-school student who still has a signature awkward demeanor.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: {{Downplayed}}. While he isn't downright beloved by them, Carl does pretty well with animals and wildlife. He seems to be the person who Marvin and the Chomps behaves around and has reasoned with Pokémon ([[EarlyInstallmentWeirdness don't ask]]) fairly well.
* DysfunctionalFamily: His step-father is a loud and stern cop, his mother unintentionally [[StacysMom attracts]] ''[[StacysMom a lot]]'' [[StacysMom of attention from others]], his step-brother is a {{NEET}} DeadpanSnarker, and his half-sisters are ThoseTwoGirls, one being a foul-mouthed [[BrattyHalfPint brat]], and the other one an [[TheDitz airhead]].
* TheEveryman: Carl is mostly a flexible protagonist who's relatively normal.
* ExtremeDoormat: Initially, Carl wasn't very assertive for himself and would easily let anyone walk all over him. Later on, he thankfully grew out of this.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: Carl is the Responsible Sibling for all of his step-siblings. Logan is a [[{{Neet}} high-school dropout]] who's [[DumbassTeenageSon not too bright]], Sally is a naive [[TheDitz ditz]], and Carrie is a [[BrattyHalfPint snarky brat.]]
* TheGenericGuy: He's just a guy with a straightforward personality; An outgoing Koopa.
* GoodIsNotNice: While usually polite and caring, he can become cynical and occasionally brash pretty easily.
* GullibleLemmings: Telling by "The School Dance", he's not too difficult to trick him. Gooper's henchman managed to talk him into thinking Grace already liked Gooper, causing Carl to give up perusing his chance to express his affection for Grace, allowing Gooper to rid Carl from his attempt to seduce Grace.
* TheHeart: Let's face it, Dry Bones is a [[{{Jerkass}} jerk]], Boo is an [[TheDitz idiot]], and Blooper is the judgmental NoRespectGuy. Carl is probably the key to making them get along.
* HeroicBSOD: Has had his moments of complete despair on a few occasions:
** After getting convinced that Grace was already interested in Gooper, he becomes in utter sorrow and becomes a trainwreck. He grows a BeardOfSorrow in the process.
* TheHero: If anyone dares to mistreat his friends or family, Carl will step up to save the day. He's virtually the only character to have the ability to defeat Gooper.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With his three friends. This ensemble of High-School teens share a vigorous bond since they were ChildhoodFriends.
* HotBlooded: While he is usually mellow, he can become competitive and is prone to impulsive anger, especially when it comes to Grace.
* HumiliationConga: Oh, poor Carl is especially prone to this:
** In "Carl's Rival", he has his class seat taken by Sebastian, had to sit next to Gordy of all people, gets beaten up by Gooper and his gang, gets beaten up Gooper ''again'', and is ''shot right in the leg by a bill-blaster''.
** Near the end of "A Christmas Carl", he suffers through a rather [[MutilationConga painful variant]]. He sets his house on fire, slips right into the kitchen utensils in a futile attempt to put out the fire, gets his entire body caught on fire, crushed by his television, ran over by a car, and finally, flattened by a towering can of gasoline. Afterward, he is hospitalized in a body cast and gets told by his imaginary dad that he pretty much ruined Christmas for everybody.
** "The School Dance" isn't a profound example, but Carl still has it rough. He gets punched in the stomach by Gooper to the point where it actually wounded him, makes the impulsive blunder of not asking out Grace when timing perfectly calls for it, has Grace thought he stood her up, is berated by his friends because of the aforementioned mistake, gets convinced by Liam and Bob that Grace already likes Gooper, locks himself into his room, gradually destroys himself, gets constantly insulted by both Calvin and his imaginary father... come to think of it, he's gotten it really bad in this episode.
* IronButtMonkey: Carl has endured a lot. He's pretty resilient and seems to take more punishment than he should.
* ItRunsInTheFamily: Carl's siblings are just as snarky as he is.
* ImaginaryFriend: Well, not really friend per-say... More like, imaginary father. But in earlier episodes, Carl usually imagines a silhouette of his biological father who gives him advice from to time to time.
* KnightInSourArmor: He sometimes finds difficulty in doing the right thing and is often a smartass, but he's definitely up there for being a very kind-hearted character.
* TheLeader: To his friends.
* LikeFatherUnlikeSon: He contrasts with his step-father to a notable extent. Carl is a calm yet sarcastic teen who suffers from anxiety. Meanwhile, Calvin is an irritable cop who's on the receiving end of snarky remarks and can sometimes act self-entitled.
* MiddleChildSyndrome: He is the older brother to his two little sisters and the younger brother to his step-brother. Calvin's either busy scolding Logan or spoiling Carrie and Sally rotten.
* NerdActionHero: Yes, he's pretty awkward and sometimes clumsy, but he's usuallly the one to say the day whenever a BigBad antagonizes him and his friends. Either Carl uses his intellegence to outsmart his rivals, stands up to bullies whenever they pick on his friends and family, or gets his hands dirty if you ''really'' piss him off.
* NiceGuy: He's really a kind individual.
* NoRespectGuy: While not to the extent of Blooper or Calvin, Carl tends to take a fair amount of abuse and misfortune regardless of his typical perspicacity.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Carl is easily susceptible to acting less rational and does have his moments of getting involved with the mayhem usually caused by his friends.
* NotSoWeak: Contray to the number of instances Gooper and his gang have beaten up Carl, he is absolutely capable of beating up somebody else himself, especially if you mess with his family, friends, girlfriend, or push him ''too'' far.
* OddFriendship: As Calvin puts it best, he is friends with an airheaded ghost, a nerdy squid, and a bragging skeleton.
* OhCrap: Whenever Calvin catches him doing something that he does not approve of. Sometimes, this is followed by a LoudGulp.
* OfficialCouple: With Grace.
* OnlySaneMan: Is more down to Earth than his family and friends. Frankly, he is one of the few normal students in Toad Town High.
* ParentalTitleCharacterization: He calls his step-father Calvin "Officer Mitchell" when he has to directly address him, as [[CallingParentsByTheirName Calvin considers his kids calling him by his given name]] as a form of disrespect. However, If Calvin is not around, [[FirstNameBasis Carl will refer to him by his given name]].
* ProperlyParanoid: Considering how wacky Toad Town is, Carl's general paranoia is fairly excusable.
* RageBreakingPoint: Sometimes, enough is enough for Carl to handle.
** In "Summer of '19", he meets this guy who bonds with his girlfriend Grace, named Leon. For a while, he tolerated him. However, after Leon smugly tells Carl that he will take Grace for himself, it plucked Carl's last nerve and caused him to hit Leon with a barstool.
** In "2020", Carl becomes progressively fed up with Gooper and his cronies antagonizing them, so he starts to fight back, which includes ''whacking beer bottles at their faces''.
** "Civil War" shows that Carl can eventually become fed up with Dry Bones' antics. After taking the fall for him many times, Carl lashes out at Dry Bones and gets into a fight with him.
* TheRival: Against Sebastian. On the occasion the latter shows up, the two are ''always'' at odds.
* SociallyAwkwardHero: He has anxiety and is the main character of ''Carl''.
* TheSocialExpert: [[CharacterDevelopment Ironically enough.]] While he was initially a shy dork who had a rather prominent apprehension, later on, he starts to socialize with other characters more. He's basically one in comparison to his friends as well, since Blooper is judgmental, Boo is a flirtatious airhead, and Dry Bones is mostly a prick who regularly fibs to make himself as superior above everybody else. Meanwhile, Carl is just the guy who's shining development comes mainly from his social life.
* SpikyHair: His hairdo has protruded spikes on its back.
* TheSnarkKnight: What he has become nowadays. Besides his anxious demeanor, being rapidly sarcastic is how one could describe him.
* StraightMan: That's a given as the Koopa Kingdom is a WorldOfSnark. Carl being a generally sardonic person makes him especially prone.
* StrongerThanTheyLook: Perhaps he looks fairly scrawny, but several instances have demonstrated his ability to beat up bullies if they pushed him too far. Telling by "The School Dance", he actually has a lot of strength.
* TalkingToThemself: He used to "argue" with his "biological father", who is really just a figment of his imagination.
* TeamDad: Carl is a far better parental figure for most of his friends than their actual parents. Even if he is not the most mature or intelligent person out there, his heart is in the right place and he is always there to teach his friends how to better themselves.
* TokenMinority: Out of the four main characters, Carl is the only member who was a Koopa that has not died (Or at least in Dry Bones' case, [[MadeOfIron receive a fatal injury]]) or isn't a completely different species entirely.
* TookALevelInBadass: He was previously an anxious dork who is Gooper's personal punching bag, now he's usually the one beating up bullies, Gooper included. He went from merely crushing on Grace to [[BigBrotherInstinct defending her whenever somebody messes with her.]]
* UnfazedEveryman: Sometimes, Carl is feeling too sarcastic to even react. Hell, in a few instances, he will resort to sarcasm while he is getting beat up.
* UnluckyEveryman: He was both modest and accident-prone.
* WackyParentSeriousChild: Both of Carl's parents are rather goofy and eccentric. Linda is a fairly goofy mother who tends to overwork herself for her kids. Meanwhile, Calvin is an incompetent cop who is prone to getting angry pretty easily. Compared that to the blatantly casual Carl Mitchel who is mostly known for his sarcasm more than anything else.

An intelligent teenage boy who's been friends with Carl ever since they were kids. Blooper is very smart, obtaining very high grades at school, but is also seen as a bit of a nerd due to his hobbies involving videogames and not being very socially open, not to mention being too quick to judge people without properly knowing them.

* AbusiveParents: His mother is shown to be verbally abusive. Given her circumstances, however, it seems to be less that she is nasty by nature and more that she is stressed as a result of having to raise five kids on her own.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Because of his foreign language, different species, and nerdy demeanor, he gets this treatment the most.
* BadassBookworm: He can fight. With an extremely high IQ, an ability to produce ink, and six limbs, Blooper is surely efficent.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Not as much as Carl, but Blooper is capable of defending himself and others.
* BigBrotherInstinct: To Roxxane. Even if you're her boyfriend, you won't be spared from Blooper.
* BookSmart: Blooper is highly intelligent academically.
* BreakTheCutie: Blooper has gotten his spirit broken many times throughout the series.
* BringMyBrownPants: When scared, Blooper may [[FurryReminder ink]] himself.
* BrutalHonesty: While generally polite, he won't extenuate most flaws he notices in any person he meets.
* ButtMonkey: The poor cephalopod has indulged in embarrassing situations and devastating setbacks. Not helping matters are his brothers picking on him.
* CannotSpitItOut: Has a crush on Roxanne, but is unable to tell her how he feels about her. Not helped by the fact that whenever he tries to do so, Roxanne either misses the point completely or already has someone else to hang out with.
* TheConscience: When the population consists of sadistic bullies, strict authority figures, or imbecilic fools, he pratically has the job to fufill this position.
* CuteBruiser: Don't let his nerdy exterior fool you. Blooper is gonna blind you good with his ink.
* CuteBookworm: A shy and intelligent squid.
* DeadpanSnarker: Occasionally. He is the OnlySaneMan after all.
* DidNotGetTheGirl: Unlike the other main characters, he doesn't have a significant other and while Roxxane serves the role as his love-interest, circumstances just won't allow Blooper to be rommantically involved with her.
* DisappearedDad: His father was eaten alive by a shark when he was young.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: More or less. Blooper has the most stories devoted to him. Also, he has an ongoing arc focused on his feelings for Roxanne.
* FatalFlaw: His overly critical view on everybody. He tends to be too judgmental for even his own good, and despite his fondness of reading them, he commonly judges a book by a cover in a figurative sense.
* TheFinickyOne: He takes this particular trope in stride, as he is blatantly sarcastic or brutally honest.
* FurryReminder: He will [[BringMyBrownPants ink himself]] when he is scared.
* GeniusBruiser: Blooper is a total nerd who gets straight As and has clobbered the Gooper gang with his ink.
* GoodIsNotNice: While he's relatively moral compared to other students in Toad Town High, he is just as judgmental, snarky, and short-tempered.
* HotBlooded: He can be rather stubborn and competitive.
* InsufferableGenius: {{Downplayed}}, while he isn't exactly condescending or openly impolite towards others, Blooper does have his moments of being very fault-finding and pessimistic.
* InterspeciesRomance: He, a squid, has a crush on Roxanne, a Koopa.
* MoralityChain: If anybody acts out, Blooper will try to be this.
* NerdsAreInnocent: While a bit judgmental, Blooper doesn't have a bad bone in his body.
* NoMouth: Blooper doesn't have a visible mouth.
* NoRespectGuy: After Carl has grown to be confident, this position has now shifted onto Blooper.
* OnlySaneMan: Blooper is the most logical out of Carl's group of friends.
* PokemonSpeak: His form of speech is of the word "bloop". Everyone seems perfectly capable of understanding him though.
* TheSmartGuy: Is academically smarter than his friends.
* SpeciesSurname: His last name is Squidd, though there are two Ds in the name.
* TheStraightMan: Blooper is typically the most rational character out of the four. Furthermore, he is the one who gives a snide comment at any given opportunity if Carl wasn't the individual dishing out derision.
* TerrestrialSeaLife: He's a cephalopod who casually hangs around the land-locked Toad Town.
* TokenMinority: He is the only character out of Carl's group who is not a Koopa ''at all'' (Boo was one before he died).
* TheUnintelligible: In early episodes, other characters often misinterpreted what Blooper says because of his language. Nowadays, everybody understands him perfectly.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Dry Bones and Boo to a lesser extent. He reguarly disapproves of their ideas and usually looks at them with disapointment. However, at the end of the day, Blooper still tolerates them and treats both of them as friends.

Another childhood friend of Carl's. Dry Bones usually likes to brag about how rich he is and how he is much cooler than his other friends... who all know that that definitely isn't true. Dry Bones comes from a very abusive household, but that doesn't stop him from living his life to the fullest and having a great time with his friends.

* AbusiveParents: His father makes it very clear that he doesn't like him, openly insulting him at every opportunity. His grandfather isn't much better.
* AchillesInHisTent: In "Civil War", he gets in a fight with Carl and he briefly joins Gooper's gang. He later makes up with Carl and rejoins his team.
* AttentionWhore: His lies are a clear sign of wanting to be the most popular kid in Toad High. That, or to be the cool kid.
* AntiHero: He's rude and quite narcissistic but come on, he is really a good guy.
* BallisticBone: Dry Bones commonly uses a giant bone to attack his enemies.
* BastardBoyfriend: He cheated on Talia with Kylie but this is now officially {{Subverted}} as he's now remorseful and the two made up.
* BlatantLies: Lies about being rich all the time.
* BigScrewedUpFamily: Literally, all of Dry Bones' relatives hate each other and have their own little WorldOfJerkass.
* BrutalHonesty: To put it lightly ironically enough, Dry Bones is blunt about his friends' flaws and mistakes.
* ButtMonkey: The dude is literally skin and bones for crying out loud. Not to mention, having to deal with a verbally AbusiveDad and a whiny and potty-mouthed grandpa who complains about everything. On top of that, he is always at the brim of slapstick.
* DemBones: He is a living Koopa skeleton.
* DysfunctionalFamily: {{Exaggerated}} to great lengths. It's clear that all of Dry Bones' family members hate each other, with Dry Bones being the one who gets the abuse the most.
* EmbarrassingFirstName: At least Dedede thinks that "Dimitri" is an embarrassing name.
* FreudianExcuse: His dad verbally and emotionally abuses him on a daily basis and he lives in a very poor state. Basically, his jerkish personality and lies are a defense mechanism to combat this.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: {{Downplayed}}. While not outright despised, Dry Bones isn't exactly the most praised one in Toad Town.
* GlowingEyelightsOfUndeath: His eye-cavities contain yellow pupils.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: To the other boys, but he is very close to Boo. Makes sense, though, as both of them are undead characters who suffered their respective lethal injuries from the poor condition of their homes.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: Yes, hidden deep into his body... And probably burnt away but he does have a soft side.
* HilariouslyAbusiveChildhood: His grandfather has a huge temper and [[SirSwearsALot a cursing problem]] on top of it. When it comes to his father however, it is not as funny.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He might be an asshole, but he's a lovable one for sure.
* JerkassHasAPoint: During the arc where he and Talia have broken up, upon hearing the news that Talia was dating Zachary, he gets upset about it and calls her new boyfriend an asshole who brags about gliders. However, turns out, he wasn't exactly far off.
* KiddieKid: He does cry like a baby on occasion and he still believes in The Boogeyman.
* MissingMom: His mother died before the events of the show.
* OnlyKnownByHisNickname: No one, not even his father, calls him "Dimitri".
* MinorInjuryOverreaction: He will cry over a not-so-serious injury. For example, he whines like a baby when he was knocked down in "Toad Town Puckers".
* NeverMyFault: He will often try to justify his actions or shift the blame onto someone else rather than apologizing.
* ItRunsInTheFamily: All of Dry Bones' family members are assholes, though unlike Dry Bones, who is a JerkWithAHeartOfGold, all of Dry Bones' relatives have little to no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Also, Dry Bones' father seems to be rather [[ObliviousToHatred oblivious to his own father's clear disliking of him]] and he thinks he is agreeing with him all the time, when in reality, he HatesEveryoneEqually.
* VitriolicBestBuds: To all of his friends.
* UncannyFamilyResemblance: All of Dry Bones' relatives look the same. This is partially {{Justified}}, as they all had their skin burned off, so any distinguishable features they had are probably ashes along with their flesh.
