Lucy is a female Celestial Wizard who uses a set of magical Gatekeys to summon otherworldly Celestial Spirits to fight on her behalf. She's also the debutante of the wealthy Heartfilia family, being the daughter of businessman Jude Heartfilia and the late Celestial Wizard Layla Heartfilia. Leaving her family life behind at the age of sixteen to follow her dream of joining Fairy Tail, she aspires to become a powerful wizard like Layla. Her dream eventually comes true after bumping into Natsu and Happy, whom she joins forces with to perform missions and pay the rent for her house in Magnolia. Though she loves her friends and spirits dearly, she gets very frustrated by their insane antics at times.

Lucy starts out with three of the ultra-rare and powerful golden keys of the Zodiac--Aquarius, Taurus, and Cancer--and eventually brings her total collection up to ten keys, excluding Pisces and Libra. She prefers to fight alongside her spirits with her whip, which she replaces with the energy whip Fleuve d'Étoiles.[[note]]French for "River of Stars"[[/note]] After honing her skills, she learns to wear Star Dresses, clothes that grant her the powers of her spirits.

[[folder:#-F]]
* TenMinuteRetirement: She quits being a wizard to become a reporter after Fairy Tail's dissolution. Predictably, it doesn't stick and she is back in action by the time she reunites with Natsu and Happy in the Alvarez Empire arc.
* AcquiredSituationalNarcissism: PlayedForLaughs at the start of Edolas when she's initially the only one among a small group of Fairy Tail wizards who weren't turned into lacrima (Natsu, Wendy, and their Exceeds) who could still use magic.
* ActionFashionista: Lucy is constantly seen changing outfits throughout the series and while she mostly prefers adventuring in her blue-and-white default, she has been prone to wear whatever is convenient. She later gains the Stardress ability that allows her to don outfits granting her powers of her Zodiac keys.
* AllYourPowersCombined:
** Together with Yukino, who owns the remaining two Zodiac keys to Lucy's ten, she is able to summon all twelve spirits at once with the "Zodiac" spell to close the doors of Eclipse on the dragons.
** In the finale, everyone in Fairy Tail--and soon every wizard in Earth-land thanks to Merudy's Sensory Link--lends her their magic energy so she can cast a powerful enough Fairy Sphere to contain Acnologia.
* AllergicToLove: Every time the topic of romance and relationships for her comes up, Lucy becomes overly anxious and flustered.
* AlliterativeFamily: Lucy has this with her mother Layla as both their names start with the letter L.
* AmuletOfConcentratedAwesome: As a Holder-type wizard, her power lies primarily in her Gatekeys, which she uses to summon powerful allies to fight for her. Take them away and you're left with an average teenage girl.
* ArrangedMarriage: To Duke Sawarr Junnelle. Their wedding is supposed to be the centerpiece of the Heartfilia family's business as it will not only expand the Heartfilia Railways, but also allow Lucy to have a son to inherit the business and it's courtesy of her father. Unfortunately for Jude, [[CallingTheOldManOut Lucy has other plans]].
* AscendedFangirl: She goes from a big fangirl of Fairy Tail to a member in good standing and one of those who could qualify as TheHeart of the guild in just half a year. Not bad at all for a rookie wizard, even if her combat ability does not compare well to some of those who have been in the guild since their childhood.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: How she usually wins her fights. She is an expert at using her spirits' magical powers to maximum tactical advantage. If her spirits aren't enough, however, she can and will [[HoistByHisOwnPetard use her opponent's powers, tactics, and strategies against them]].
* BadassAdorable: She is a fangirl of Fairy Tail who gets a bit star-struck, but is still a competent wizard.
* BadassBookworm: She's pretty book smart, and is an avid reader and aspiring writer.
* BadassOnPaper: Her list of accomplishments is actually quite impressive. Though most of it is exaggerated in-series, she's is a highly accomplished celestial wizard who even made the Celestial King change his mind due to her intense friendship with Loke and all her celestial spirits, and summoned the King himself.
* BalefulPolymorph: In ''100 Years Quest'', [[spoiler: after being captured by Selene's lackeys, Lucy's forcibly transformed into a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nure-onna nure-onna]] (a [[SnakePeople half-woman/half-snake]] yokai), and is reduced to a predator, while being forced to do battle with Natsu.]]
* BareYourMidriff: Most prominently featured in her X791 outfit shown above.
* BathingBeauty: She typically has a bath scene at least once in almost every story arc while wearing her ModestyTowel in the bathtub for the anime version.
* BellyDancer: She is forced to play this role in the second movie. While she [[ReluctantFanserviceGirl hates doing it]], it's one of the few notable times her seduction attempt actually works.
* BenevolentBoss: She is very kind to her Celestial Spirits and refuses to think of using them as shields. She also fights alongside her Spirits and treats them as her friends, which is a lot more than what can be said of other Celestial Spirit Mages, who see their spirits merely as tools or objects.
* BerserkButton: Do ''not'' enter her house uninvited. Natsu and Happy found that out the hard way.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Lucy is a very compassionate girl who treats her celestial spirits well. That doesn't mean she'll suffer to let villains get away with hurting her friends regardless of their intentions.
* BigSisterInstinct: A chart of relationships shows that she views Wendy as a younger sister. She also develops such a relationship with her distant cousin Michelle in the {{Filler}} arc "Key of the Starry Heavens", even though Michelle is technically older since Lucy was [[FishOutOfTemporalWater frozen in time for seven years]]. Even after learning that Michelle is actually an imposter who was trying to manipulate her, Lucy continues to show concern for her.
* BlueIsHeroic: Lucy’s outfits typically have blue on them and she is one of the main characters of the series.
* BornLucky: She is noted for having astronomically high luck, escaping from a curse that is said to have a billion-to-one chance of avoiding in the Tartaros arc. It was partially because of this that her parents nicknamed her "Lucky Lucy Heartfilia".
* BrainsAndBrawn: She wins most of her fights due to sheer wit and intelligence, unlike Natsu, who simply prefers overpowering his opponent.
* BreastAttack: Accidentally suffers one of the burning variety. When Natsu begins losing control of himself in Dragon Force, Lucy hugs him from behind to calm him down. She later complains to him that his body was so hot it burned her breasts, and she needed Wendy to use healing magic on her.
* BreastExpansion: Brandy does this to mess with her, at first inverted but Lucy quickly gets the largest bust out of all the female characters for a brief moment.
* ButtMonkey: Even after her CharacterDevelopment, she tends to get knocked around by her guildmates from time to time, and she gets thrown into fanservice [[ReluctantFanserviceGirl far more often than she'd like]].
* BuxomIsBetter: {{Averted|Trope}}. She has the honor of having the biggest breasts in the series, but her inability to seduce any man (outside of her own spirits) is a RunningGag. Not to mention that, if Gray is to be believed during a FreakyFridayFlip, [[BlessedWithSuck Lucy suffers from]] [[RealityEnsues persistent back pain]].
* CallingTheOldManOut: During her reunion with Jude after Phantom Lord's demise, she has less than kind words to say about how he handled the situation with Phantom Lord and Fairy Tail. By the end of the Battle of Fairy Tail, Lucy calls out Jude again when he reappears bankrupt and demands 100,000 Jewel from her, [[RichInDollarsPoorInSense only to later realize he was just asking for money for a carriage ride to work and grossly overestimated the cost]].
* CelibateHeroine: So far, though mostly it just seems like the right romance hasn't presented itself to her, rather than being opposed to the idea as a whole. While she doesn't actively seek out romance, she is a sucker for it, judging from the few times Natsu has been inadvertently romantic with her.
* CharacterDevelopment: She starts out as reluctant to battle in contrast to her more rowdy guildmates. After the second TimeSkip, she is much more willing to fight, going as far as challenging Natsu and being willing to face down three of the Spriggan 12 with confidence.
* ChekhovsSkill: Her reading, writing, and research skills seem like mundane character traits, but they play integral parts across the finale. First, she's able to memorize and edit the arcane text in the Book of E.N.D. to keep Natsu alive and fighting during his battle with Zeref, and eventually, turn him into a full human. She's also able to find and learn the method of casting Fairy Sphere in the guild's archives through this method.
* TheChick: She has the least raw power out of the human members of her team, treats her spirits exceptionally well, doesn't like fighting, and is very caring towards those she meets.
* ClothesMakeTheSuperman: Her Star Dresses are clothes that allow her to use some of her Celestial Spirits' powers.
* ComingOfAgeStory: Her journey is leaving her family to join Fairy Tail and become a respected celestial wizard.
* CoolKey: She owns a whole set of mystical keys that open the gates to the Celestial Spirit World.
* CowardlyLion: She hates being stuck in the middle of a battle, and she'll run from trouble if she gets the chance, but she'll step up if someone else is in danger.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: For all her cowardice, she's willing to charge into battle and fight with her friends.
* DamselOutOfDistress: It's no easy feat to kidnap her or restrain her and she might get out before her guildmates arrive to save her.
* DefectorFromDecadence: She leaves her family life behind to join Fairy Tail after Jude focused more on his business to the point where he became neglectful. Later, as a result of how Jude handled the situation with Phantom Lord, she decides to stay with Fairy Tail for good when given the opportunity to return home.
* {{Determinator}}: She has eventually inherited Natsu's stubbornness and refusal to give up, even when the odds are against her. This was shown when she and Natsu fought against Kain, her Magic is completely drained and she is left helpless as Kain beats her. Natsu urges Lucy to run, but she refuses, stating she wants to be together with everyone.
* DiscardAndDraw: Not long after she loses her ability to summon Aquarius, the Celestial Spirit King gives her the former's water powers. This NextTierPowerUp also applies to the powers of all her other Zodiac spirits as well.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Lucy's a nice girl who is willing to befriend and forgive anyone, up to and including former antagonists, regardless of morality. However, she draws the line when she realizes that Jude requested that Phantom Lord retrieve her unharmed to help the family business, only for them to start a guild war with Fairy Tail and nearly get her friends killed without his knowledge. Fortunately, they reconcile shortly after he loses his family business.
* FaceMonsterTurn: [[spoiler: After getting turned into a nure-onna, Lucy's personality turns sadistic and predatory, expressing her desire to kill and eat Natsu, while cruelly manipulating him. Fortunately, she's saved by the intervention of Aquarius.]]
* FashionableAsymmetry: She frequently wears her hair in a ponytail on the right side of her head.
* FirstNameBasis: She makes no mention of her surname willingly, at first. It isn't until the Phantom Lord arc that her last name, Heartfilia, is mentioned for the first time by Jose Porla.
* FloralThemeNaming: Not Lucy herself but her book character who she in universe created is named Iris in reference to the Iris flower of the same name and continues Fiore’s flower named theme.
* {{Forgiveness}}: She's willing to forgive anyone and everyone who has crossed her when given the chance, provided that person wants to be forgiven, as exemplified by Minerva and Flare, two adversaries who antagonize her in the Grand Magic Games, much to their eventual regret.
* FriendlyAddressPrivileges: She receives this from Erza soon after she met when Erza insists that Lucy not use "-san" on her. She gives this to Juvia later on, noticing that Juvia [[FirstNameBasis yelled Lucy's name without honorifics]] in the middle of the fight, and suggests that she can call her "Lucy" from this point on since they're friends.
* FriendlyRivalry: During the ''Manga/FairyTail100YearsQuest'' she develops one with [[spoiler:Brandish over which one of them is going to find Aquarius's key first]].
* FriendToAllLivingThings: The celestial spirits often make note of how kind she is to them, even going so far as to think of them as her fellow human beings, because of the rather harsh treatment they often get from other summoners. Virgo, Aries, Gemini, and Scorpio have all broken their contracts with their abusive owners and sought her out because they knew how kind she is.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:G-L]]
* GenerationXerox: She shares her mother Layla's compassion and altruism towards those in need, as shown when she willingly forgives Minerva and Flare for their atrocities.
* GirlishPigtails: She almost always wears her hair in twin tails after she changes her clothes. It becomes her standard look for a while after returning from Sirius Island, though she eventually changes her hair back during the Grand Magic Games.
* GoalInLife:
** Her profile states that she hopes to one day publish a novel about her experiences in Fairy Tail. She succeeds by the final chapter, winning a prized award for it.
** Since midway through the Alvarez Empire, she's made it her goal to find Aquarius' key, which was reforged one year after Lucy destroyed it.
* GottaCatchEmAll: Not in the traditional sense. Out of the countless Gatekeys there are, only twelve of them are golden keys that summon the powerful Zodiac spirits, and she admits at one point that she had hoped to one day collect all of them. The interesting thing about this is, she only actively seeks out ''one'' of the keys during the story, and is shown to have found Taurus's key on her own in the anime. The rest were either inherited from her mother, or they actively asked to join her. By the time there are only two left, she actually declines them, realizing her desire for a complete collection wouldn't be right if it meant severing their bond to their owners.
* GratuitousFrench: Her "Fleuve d'étoiles" whip's name means "River of Stars".
* GroinAttack: Lucy goes all out with this one by the time of the Phantom Lord arc. After convincing Jose that she's going use a bucket as a toilet if he's not going to let her use a washroom, she kicks him in the groin and escapes.
* GuileHeroine: While her powers are normally not as overwhelming as her teammates, Lucy has proven to be a capable combatant herself, often using her cleverness to her advantage, and thinking outside the box during battle.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Lucy is the only member of the strongest team with blonde hair who deeply cares for every single wizard and will lay down her life for each of them.
* HatedHometown: Despite having the means to go back to her home, she refuses to do so because she associates it with her memories of Layla and Jude's neglectfulness. The only times she returns to her home is when she decides to disown Jude for inadvertently helping a guild war come into place and later when she realizes that Jude died atoning for his misdeeds.
* HatesTheirParent: She resents and despises Jude for neglecting her after Layla's death, especially after she unsuccessfully gives him a rice ball on her 11th birthday. It gets to the point where she disowns him for inadvertently starting the guild war between Phantom Lord and Fairy Tail. In the end, however, Lucy gets over this resentment shortly after Jude loses his fortune.
* HeIsNotMyBoyfriend: She has to deal with this trope a number of times. People have mistakenly hooked her up with Natsu, Gray, Loki/Leo, and Ren from Blue Pegasus.
* HelpYourselfInThePast: In the third OVA, Lucy goes back in time with her friends and stops a runaway horse-drawn carriage with a little girl inside. She doesn't realize that the little girl is her past self, who never notices it was her X784 counterpart who saved her. The only glimpse she gets of her savior is the Fairy Tail guild mark on her hand, ultimately inspiring Lucy to join Fairy Tail in the first place, [[FridgeLogic and perhaps even to put the mark on her own hand.]]
* HeroicLineage: Her ancestry goes back to Anna Heartfilia, who's said to be a very powerful celestial wizard. Anna worked with Zeref on his Eclipse Gate plan to send the child Dragon Slayers [[FlingALightIntoTheFuture into the future]], and her descendants were entrusted with watching over the Eclipse Gate until Layla opened it 400 years later.
* HeroicSeductress: A {{Subverted|trope}} example. She often makes attempts at seduction whether she actually likes it or not, but they fail miserably more often than not. And as shown in ''100 Years Quest'', one of the few times it actually ''did'' work was against [[ButchLesbian another woman]] (and completely unintentionally when she was lampshading her own failure at making this work).
* HeroicSelfDeprecation:
** Lucy isn't nearly as confident in her fighting abilities as she should be, though she does manage to get over any doubts once the fighting actually starts.
** Following Phantom Lord's assault on Fairy Tail, Lucy blames herself for everything that has happened. And she's not exactly wrong.
* HeroismWontPayTheBills: Despite constantly putting herself at risk against the forces of evil for the sake of her clients, her guild and the world, Lucy [[RunningGag still struggles to pay the rent for her apartment]].
* HollywoodDateless: Aquarius constantly teases her about her lack of a boyfriend.
* HotterAndSexier: Lucy has always been a MsFanservice in the series, but this becomes more obvious after the first TimeSkip, where she is given skimpier clothes as her regular attire, and a [[GirlishPigtails hairstyle]] that makes her look sexier as well. The ArtEvolution helps a lot too. After the second TimeSkip, her longer hair and further ArtEvolution make her look even sexier.
* IAmAHumanitarian: [[spoiler: After becoming a yokai, Lucy apparently developed a taste for humans flesh, expressing her desire to ''eat'' Natsu.]]
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: Lucy is the nicest of the main four humans, and a character who, despite her teasing, is ultimately very pure-hearted and an AllLovingHero. She never does anything morally ambiguous, would do anything to protect her loved ones and is very forgiving.
** [[spoiler: Tragically subverted come ''100 Year Quest'', when she's transformed into a yokai, and becomes cruel and sadistic, taking noticeably satisfaction in hurting Natsu.]]
* InfinityPlusOneSword: Summoning the Celestial Spirit King, which can only be done by someone who can summon three celestial spirits at once, an act itself that requires a very large amount of magic power.
* InformedAttribute: Almost all of the female cast have the [[WorldOfBuxom same breast size]], Lucy included. What makes it fit this trope is that Lucy's breasts are the only ones mentioned, most parodied, and regarded as the biggest of all in-universe for some reason.
* InformedDeformity: Natsu has observed armpit hair, a zit on her face, and constipation, each provoking a mix of embarrassment and anger from her when brought up. We only have his word to go by.
* InstantCosplaySurprise: A RunningGag is that she often ends up in a cosplay outfit at a most unfortunate moment.
* JerkassHasAPoint: Although she's initially kind of a JerkWithAHeartOfGold, Lucy points out to Jude that his involvement with Phantom Lord inadvertently led to the guild war with Fairy Tail, which nearly killed her friends. Even Jude comes to [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone realize]] how wrong his actions were.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Downplayed, and only initially. Back when she first joins Fairy Tail, Lucy's a bit abrasive and quite vain, but is still a deeply loving person at heart. This is demonstrated when she befriends Natsu, Happy and her fellow guildmates. Later, she softens up into a straight-up NiceGirl.
* KamehameHadoken: Her Urano Metria spell. Lucy falls in a state of trance, in which she chanted out the spell's incantation. This prompted the area around her opponent, to become full of star-like lights, followed shortly after by a blanket of darkness reminiscent of a night sky. All of the star-like lights exploded at the same time, inflicting heavy damage upon her opponents.
* KickChick: Mostly played for laughs with her "[[{{Anticlimax}} Lucy KICK]]" and "Lucy Fire" (performed with Natsu's "assistance") techniques. However, it's played more seriously when she becomes strong enough that her kicks do some real damage.
* KickingAssInAllHerFinery: Her Leo Form Star Dress. Onlookers {{lampshade}} that she would fight in such an outfit.
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: The Light to Erza's Dark Feminine. Lucy is cheerful and a PluckyGirl, while Erza is melancholic and can be standoffish.
* LikeMotherLikeDaughter: She aspires to become a Celestial Wizard like her mother Layla was.
* LineOfSightName: Her father says that her name came from the guild in which her parents met, "Love & Lucky", observing that the "k" was missing as they left. Lucy half-jokingly comments that a baby shouldn't be named on a whim like that.
* LonelyRichKid: Her backstory. Also why she ran away from home. This is later cemented by the fact that she never had the chance growing up to have Brandish as a friend.
* LossOfIdentity: [[spoiler: Is implied to have gone through this after being turned into a yokai, as her personality gets completely rewritten, and it's indicated her memories were suppressed. Fortunately, Aquarius is able to undo the spell, and manages to pull Lucy's identity back to the surface.]]
* LovableCoward: Early in the series, she's surrounded by monsters for guildmates and she knows it. As she gets better at fighting and more used to her guildmates, this goes away.
* LoveRevelationEpiphany: PlayedForLaughs in an omake chapter. When Mirajane gets into Lucy's head the idea that Natsu might like her, Lucy suddenly becomes very nervous around him and starts to fantasize about a relationship with him. When she thinks he is going to confess, Natsu reveals he only wanted Lucy to let him borrow Virgo to dig a hole. Realizing she made a fuss over nothing, Lucy slaps Natsu and calls herself an idiot.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:M-R]]
* MagneticHero: It's {{discussed|Trope}} in ''[[Anime/FairyTailTheMoviePhoenixPriestess Phoenix Priestess]]'' that Lucy has such a natural affinity with people that she can form a strong connection with them, even if they're enemies or if they've only met for a few moments. It's for this reason why she's able to link with so many wizards across Earth-land via Merudy's Sensory Link--which requires the target to possess powerful thoughts and feelings towards those they link to for it to work--giving her ample magic power to seal Acnologia within Fairy Sphere.
* ManiacTongue: [[spoiler: Acquires one as a nure-onna, which is constantly seen licking her lips, and even [[LeacherousLicking licking Natsu]].]]
* MeaningfulName:
** Her name means "light or light bringer". It was also derived in-universe from a signpost that read "Lucky" with a missing "K", indicating her unusually high luck.
** Furthermore the first half of her last name heartfilia means heart as in the part of the body that pumps blood and hearts have also been used as symbols to respesent love and can even mean love or passion while the second half of her last name filia means daughter which is fitting as all known members of the Heartfilia family barring Jude who took the name as his own are all female thus together Lucy’s last name can mean passion daughter or love daughter.
** Lucy's Adventures of Iris book character is named Iris, which means rainbow.
* MistreatmentInducedBetrayal: In the Phantom Lord arc, she's fed up with her father Jude thanks to years of neglectfulness and his indirect responsibility in the guild war between Phantom Lord and Fairy Tail. After returning home, she tells him not to interfere in her life nor mess with Fairy Tail again.
* MostWritersAreWriters: She's writing a book, though she claims to be an amateur. She lets Levy read it due to her own book interests. She also writes a "journal" about her adventures with the guild, in the form of letters to her [[MissingMom deceased mother]].
* {{Motif}}: Lucy has several different motifs spread out throught the series.
** Cosmic Motif: Lucy has a connection to the stars such as her star dress power, her urano metria spell is known as the ultimate magic of the stars, her second whip that she got from Virgo translates to river of stars, when she’s not wearing heart earrings she’s wearing star shaped earrings instead and both her swimsuits and pajamas have star imagery on them as well being taken to a place called star memory along with Brandish by Aquarius.
** Body Motif: For Lucy it’s hearts as she wears heart earrings, her first time skip outfit has a heart symbol on her shirt, all the celestial spirit clothing that Virgo gives her all have heart symbols on them, both her whips have heart shaped ends, her shirts outfit during the Dragon Cry movie is shaped like an upside down heart, her outfit when Lucy meets up with Natsu and happy again after the second time skip has a heart symbol just moved over to the left a little on her shirt, at star memory Lucy’s mermaid tail had heart symbols on its ends and her last name is Heartfilia as well.
** Numerological Motif: Lucy has been associated with the number seven several times throught the series such her very first mission in the series being numbered seven on it, she started out with seven zodiac keys/spirits, her rent is 70,000 jewel (10,000x7), in chapter 107 during the Fairy Tail girl contest Lucy was contestant number seven, during the Tenrou Island arc Lucy and Canna chose route C which was number seven on the Islands numbered routes, she was born in the year X767, she was 17 (10+7) when she started the series, after the Tartoros arc Lucy is left with fourteen zodiac keys (7x2) and she named her in universe book character Iris which means rainbow which can be divided into seven different colors,Iris can also reference the asteroid Iris also known as 7 Iris, she is also a member of a group that is normally at max made up of seven people and considering the fact that Lucy is considered lucky this can also make it a case of lucky seven as well.
* MsFanservice: She's large-breasted blonde who consistently wears skimpy outfits, carries a [[WhipItGood whip]], is frequently subject to ClothingDamage, almost always fights [[DesignatedGirlFight other women]], is often depicted in [[CosplayOtakuGirl cosplay outfits]] and sometimes [[{{Meido}} maid costumes]], is occasionally captured and [[BoundAndGagged tied up]], and is commonly drawn from provocative angles or with emphasis on suggestive body parts.
* MyFriendsAndZoidberg: She's treated this way occasionally by some members of the guild, though this is primarily PlayedForLaughs during comedy scenes. When things actually get serious, the guild is more than willing to go to bat for Lucy, as they have shown multiple times. Natsu can get especially protective of her, most notably if she is hurt or made to cry.
* MyFutureSelfAndMe: She meets her future self from X792 who came to warn everyone about a BadFuture. Her future self rescues her from the X798 Rogue's fatal attack meant for her [[TheHeroDies and dies afterwards]].
* NakedPeopleAreFunny: Several times to varying degrees, but it's especially funny when a naked Lucy is [[ItMakesSenseInContext thrown through the sky and smacks into Natsu]]. It gets to the point where Natsu and Gray are no longer shocked to see her naked.
* {{Narrator}}: As one of the main focal characters, Lucy exposes her point of view on the story and anticipating important events. She often narrates after and in-between important and serious arcs.
* NervesOfSteel: Lucy certainly has this trope when she's facing [=DiMaria=] and being threatened by having her face ruined while being bound by anti-magic sealing cuffs.
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye:
** She wasn't able to say goodbye to her beloved mother Layla before the latter opened Eclipse in a tragic HeroicSacrifice.
** She has a particularly tragic case with Jude, as he had really cleaned up his act before his death and tried to be a better father even while she was missing for seven years. Plus, even though she does make amends and leave on good terms with him the last time they meet, Lucy never has the chance to actually tell Jude she loves him until after reading his last letter to her.
* NiceGirl: She is a loyal friend in the face of danger like all Fairy Tail members, but she's generally also one of the kinder and gentler members in day-to-day life. She provides a bit of a contrast between Natsu's hot-blooded recklessness, Gray's standoffish-ness, and Erza's stern leadership. Not that she's totally above anger, however; it's possible to [[BewareTheNiceOnes piss her off]], just like the rest of the guild.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Lucy usually freaks out at her guildmate's antics. Unlike most of her friends, she does not get very excited about fighting and is not quick to resort to violence as the solution. However, she does admit that being around her guildmates is really fun.
* {{Ojou}}: Subverted. She grew up as one but she left because her father Jude focused on his business instead of her to the point of neglect. That being said, no one in the Fairy Tail guild gives her preferential treatment and she prefers it that way to the point where Lucy temporarily disowns her father after the battle with Phantom Lord.
* OnlySaneWoman: Though unlike most examples, she enjoys the sheer wackiness of her guild once she gets used to it. Most of the time, anyways.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: She's fairly powerful as a Celestial Spirit mage, considering she has 10 [[spoiler:(9 post-Tartaros arc)]] of the 12 one of a kind zodiac keys, but she's constantly being eclipsed by the insane antics of Natsu, Erza, and the other upper level Fairy Tail members. She takes some of the biggest TookALevelInBadass moments of the core team, eventually becoming one of the strongest Celestial Spirit mages alive, but even then she freely admits that Natsu and many of her friends are still stronger than her; luckily for her she compensates [[OnlySaneMan with strategy and groundedness]].
* ParentalAbandonment: Layla, her mother, died seven years before the start of the story. Seven years later, her father Jude also dies while due to his overworking while he's atoning for his misguided deeds.
* ParentalNeglect: Coupled with WhenYouComingHomeDad in regards to how her life was when growing up with her father, since his grief over Layla's death resulted in him becoming a {{workaholic}} father. When Lucy rescues Jude from Naked Mummy and eventually disappears on Sirius Island for seven years, however, he atones for his misdeeds by sending gifts and rent money each year--and on her birthday no less--[[RedemptionEqualsDeath until he dies]].
* PersonalityBloodTypes: As revealed on the 85th chapter cover of the original Fairy Tail series Lucy’s blood type is AB and Lucy fits the best traits to a T as she’s a calm rational person in fights, will adapt during fighting and using her intelligence to outwit her foes, has great control over herself in tough situations that she faces and is a lovingly sweet sociable bookworm at heart towards her fellow guild members.
* PervertRevengeMode: {{Deconstructed|Trope}}. When Natsu somehow finds his way into her apartment, uninvited, while she's bathing, she lashes out at him with an attempted drop-kick to the face. Contrary to all expectations, he catches her leg, states her combat training is insufficient and [[ItAmusedMe holds her upside down until her modesty towel falls off]].
* PinkMeansFeminine: Lucy has worn pink several times such as her pink furred coat the second time she went to Mount Hakobe then she wore a pink dress during the party after the grandmagic games, her Aries star dress is also partially pink colored and her guild mark is also pink colored and she’s the most outright feminine member of her team and considering how upbeat she usually is it would also qualify as cheery pink as well.
* PluckyGirl: The poor girl has been kidnapped, imprisoned, beaten, tortured, and humiliated (usually via public nudity) far more times than one can count throughout the series, yet she somehow still comes out of it all with a big smile.
* ThePowerOfLove: Loke claims this is why their bond is strong enough that he can summon himself without using up her magic power. She denies anything of the sort.
* PowerTattoo: Any time she wears her one of her Star Dresses, the Zodiac symbol of that dress appears on her body.
* ProudBeauty: She's proud of her good looks and is annoyed about how her "feminine wiles" never work to distract men. A RunningGag throughout the series is dedicated to pointing out how this never seems to work or otherwise backfires on her.
* ReluctantFanserviceGirl: She swaps between this and ProudBeauty, depending on who's looking.
* ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming: Lucy has two cases of this.
** The first one is Lucy’s name as it references Saint Lucy/Lucia of Syracuse who among other things is a patron saint of authors and writers which is fitting as Lucy is a writer who aspires to become an author by writing about her friend’s adventures down over the course of the series.
** The second one is to her in universe named book character Iris which is in reference to the Greek goddess of the rainbow of the same name who’s job is to act as both a messenger for the other gods and act as a mediator between the gods and humanity respectively.
* RichesToRags: By the end of the Phantom Lord arc, Lucy gives up her wealth as the debutante of the Heartfilia family to live a more simplistic life as a member of Fairy Tail.
* TheRunaway: A combination of the Circus and Abused types. Lucy recognizes running away from Jude without telling him is a very stupid decision, though Fairy Tail is rather fond of her and refuses to let her leave, even if they get killed protecting her.
* RunningGag: She is source of some of the series' most enduring recurring jokes:
** She usually finds someone waiting for her when she enters her house/a room in her house. No matter how often she mentally prepares for it, she always ends up getting floored in the end. It's happened so often that it feels strange to her when it ''doesn't'' happen.
** A minor one involves her walking along the edge of the sidewalk near a river and being told by a fisherman that its dangerous. She nearly falls in a couple of times.
** Her tendency to use her "feminine wiles" to distract her targets, especially male ones, never works the way she hopes it does.
** A lesser gag is her weight issues as Happy has commented while carrying her during the Edolas arc that she was heavy, Capricorn has commented about Lucy’s weight and said he’d help put her on a diet regiment to help her lose weight if she wanted to and Natsu while carrying a unconscious future Lucy noticed that she was lighter in weight then present Lucy thanks to the bad future and Natsu said “it looks like you finally found a diet that actually worked” once again referencing Lucy’s weight.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:S-Z]]
* SeashellBra: She wore one of these when Aquarius takes her and Brandish to Star Memory in the Alvarez Empire arc.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: She has a tendency to suffer clothing damage regularly, so Virgo has to dress her up in Celestial Spirit clothing. Very happily.
* ScrewTheMoneyIHaveRules: By the end of the Phantom Lord arc, Lucy refuses Jude's offer to help his family business out of loyalty to her TrueCompanions, since his actions inadvertently caused Fairy Tail pain and suffering.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: She often disregard rules that don't suit her. Early on she does this, and then complains when Natsu pulls a ScrewTheMoneyIHaveRules when they are offered the reward they would've gotten anyways. Later on, she manages to convince the Celestial Spirit King that some rules are too harsh if they would allow an innocent person to die.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: Enduring six years of ParentalNeglect from Jude after Layla's death ''really'' didn't appeal to her, and she left to join Fairy Tail the first chance she got.
* SecretlyWealthy: She willingly hides her surname from others early in the series because the Heartfilias are the richest business family in the kingdom. Her reason for doing so is because she wants to make it in the world on her own terms and leave her family life behind. Well, until the aftermath of the Phantom Lord arc at least.
* ShesGotLegs: Rare is the occasion that Lucy is seen in long pants, instead usually wearing a skirt or [[WhoWearsShortShorts shorts]].
* ShipTease: Gets no shortage of it with Natsu, with the occasional nod to some of the other boys.
* {{Shorttank}}: Back in the beginning of the series, she wears a tank-top and skirt. Nowadays, when her team actually has more female members than males (as noted at the TwoGirlsToATeam entry), she doesn't really fill this role anymore unless if you count her, Natsu and Happy as the absolutely most important members since they founded the team.
* ShoutOut: Creator/HiroMashima named her after Music/TheBeatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".
* ShroudedInMyth: PlayedForLaughs. Many of the teams more spectacular deeds end up as being blamed solely on Lucy, and word gets out before she can shift the credit to someone else. The more badass things she ''does'' do are mostly only known to the celestial spirits she summons, though her defeating Bickslow and Angel are known to a select few wizards.
* SlapstickKnowsNoGender: She's probably the most frequent victim of slapstick comedy in the series, including a pillow thrown in a pillow fight between Natsu, Gray and Erza with enough force to knock her out the room, a sleeping Natsu's Fire Dragon's Iron Fist blasting her through the Guild roof and into the riverbank, and... everything regarding Kain's HollywoodVoodoo.
* SnakesAreSinister: At the end of Chapter 73 of ''100 Years Quest'', [[spoiler: it's revealed that Youko transformed Lucy into a [[SnakePeople half-woman/half-snake]] {{Youkai}} known as a 'Nure-onna'. While like this, Lucy's personality is completely changed, as she turns sadistic and violent, taking visible pleasure in both the emotional and physical harm she inflicts upon Natsu. Even when Aquarius (whose key was Lucy's primary motivation) appears, Lucy merely [[SmugSnake sneers at her]], insisting that she's too strong for even Aquarius (which gets proven wrong fairly quickly).]]
* SoleSurvivor: By the end of ''Fairy Tail'', Lucy is one of the two remaining Heartfilia family members, the other being Anna.
* SphereOfPower: Fairy Sphere, one of the Three Great Fairy Magics she learns from a book and uses it’s abilities to trap Acnologia’s body inside it and using Fairy Sphere’s power to freeze time within in order to give the dragon slayers the chance to defeat him one and for all.
* SquishyWizard: A {{Downplayed|trope}} example, since she does have some skill in combat. However, she is still very vulnerable in physical combat. Her [[PowerCopying Star Dress]] ability after the second TimeSkip helps remedy this.
* StarPower: Her ultimate spell, Urano Metoria (or "[[SpellMyNameWithAnS Uranometria]]"), creates miniature stars and planets that pummel and instantly defeat her opponents.
* StellarName: Lucy’s book character is named Iris as in the asteroid 7 Iris.
%%* StraightMan: To Natsu most often, but also the rest of the team as well.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: She looks virtually identical to her mother, Layla. The same applies to her ancestor from 400 years ago, Anna, to the point where Natsu immediately mistakes her for Lucy.
* SummonMagic: She's a very great summoner, though her magic reserves are low so summoning multiple spirits in a fight is more tiring for her than other wizards, at least until she achieves Second Origin.
* SupportingProtagonist: To Natsu as his [[TheLancer lancer]].
* SwissArmyHero: After the second TimeSkip, [[spoiler: Lucy learns to channel her spirits' powers into her own being]].
* TalkingTheMonsterToDeath: Lucy gets this at least twice. Once in her fight with the rock-and-roll assassin in the Tower of Heaven, where she specifically talks Juvia out of the Mind Control that she has been put under, and later in the Oración Seis fight, where Lucy convinces most of Angel's Celestial Spirits to defect.
* TaremeEyes: Her eyes are round to reflect her warm, friendly nature, becoming more pronounced due to ArtEvolution.
* TheTease: She admits she puts effort into looking cute so she can be this trope.
* TemptingFate: Lucy invokes this trope three times over the course of the series:
** Non-lethal version: There is an amusement park inside the king of Edolas' freaking huge castle, to the shock of Lucy, Natsu, and Gray. Natsu was pleased.
** Lucy also does it earlier in the same arc, complaining of boredom and wanting something exciting to happen. And then all of Magnolia Town gets sucked up by Anima.
** At the Tower of Heaven, she says "You'd be a really scary enemy, Juvia!" Time for Rock of Succubus. Lucy, you've really got to stop doing this.
* TenderTears: Often, and for good reason, as she usually ends up being singled out and relentlessly attacked by enemy guilds. The first time being when Fairy Tail went to war with Phantom Lord in her defense and won.
* TheChosenOne: Parodied. Lucy wonders if she's this when she's the only one who can use magic in Edolas. She is immediately shot down. Then everyone else gets their own mana potions to drink, and they're right back to using their powers.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Girly Girl to Erza's Tomboy, though this is only by comparison. She plays Tomboy to Wendy's Girly Girl. In-universe, she is seen as a {{Shorttank}}.
* TookALevelInBadass: More like multiple courses in badass. Although she's very good with her [[WhipItGood whip]], she starts out as a more or less ordinary girl whose spirits do most of the fighting, and she loses magic power at inopportune times due to pushing herself. This all changes when she activates her [[PowerUp Second Origin]], which allows her to summon multiple Zodiac spirits at once and combine their attacks. Her caliber becomes so high, in fact, she's able to handle summoning the Celestial Spirit King himself. And when she takes yet another step over the second TimeSkip, where she learns to don Star Dresses to channel her spirits' powers and fight side-by-side with them, she's able to start slugging it on the field with the rest of her team. [[spoiler: In the sequel/spin-off she reveals she's learned how to channel two Star Dresses at once in a sort of fusion to vastly increase her power. She also manages to hold her own against all of the Strauss siblings at once during the battle of Draseel.]]
** [[spoiler: Played very darkly in the Moon Dragon God arc; when she's turned into a nure-onna, she gains access to the Spiritual Arts, which greatly increases her strength, enough to overpower Natsu, and force him into his Lighting Flame Dragon Mode.]]
* TookALevelInKindness: Way back at the start of the series, she's a bit of a JerkWithAHeartOfGold who, while caring towards her spirits and friends, is more inclined to take jobs only for the reward. By the time of the Grand Magic Games, after having plenty of experiences and collecting ten of the twelve Zodiac keys, she becomes more mature, friendly, heroic and self-confident. She even declines celestial wizard Yukino's offer to give Lucy the remaining two Zodiac keys until she feels Yukino is ready to part with them. In fact, Lucy [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] that if she were like the way she was when she first joined Fairy Tail, she would have taken the keys without question, [[GottaCatchEmAll just for the sake of having all twelve]].
%%* TownGirls: The Neither to Wendy's Femme and Erza's Butch.
* TraumaCongaLine:
** Her mother died trying to open Eclipse for the dragon slayers to arrive in the present day, her father neglected her to put all of his efforts in maintaining his business, and she ran off to pursue her dream of joining Fairy Tail. And to make matters worse, Brandish's mother also indirectly caused Layla's death.
** Lucy has another one after the return from Sirius Island, given that (including filler arcs) she first finds out her father's dead, believes she finds another family member only to find out that said family member is a doll that also betrays her. She gets humiliated and brutalized ''twice'' during the Grand Magic Games, arrested, sees her future self die right in front of her, has her Celestial Spirits revolt on her, is forced to break Aquarius' key before Natsu leaves her and the guild disbands for an entire year, leaving her completely alone again. Throughout all of it, she never breaks once.
** [[spoiler: The Moon Dragon God arc sees Lucy first getting [[CurbStompBattle soundly defeated]] by Selene's servant Mimi, leading her to believe she's still weak despite all her effort, crushing her confidence. Then she's transformed into a yokai by Youko, has her identity and humanity stripped away from her, and becomes a cruel, almost unrecognizable monster.]]
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: While not seen on screen but according to the Fairy Tail Manga volume 33 Q&A Lucy’s favorite food is yogurt.
* TrueBlueFemininity: She's introduced in a standard bluish outfit, and has more girly hobbies like shopping and maintaining her appearance.
* {{Tsundere}}: Lucy's normally cute, flirty and light-hearted, but she can have a violent temper at times, especially when finding trespassers in her house.
* UnlimitedWardrobe: She changes her clothes with virtually every mission. At least partially justified, in that Virgo brings clothes from the Celestial Spirit World when the outfit Lucy is wearing at the time is ruined.
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: Aside from Lucy, no one really cares about the council envoy's appearance.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Happy and Juvia. The former likes teasing her while the latter perceives her as a love rival for Gray's affection, but both still care about her.
* WeakButSkilled: She's not all that strong physically, but she has the tendency to put whatever tools she has at her disposal to good use, and her quick thinking and wits have saved her on more than one occasion.
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: Her defining trait as a celestial wizard is that she treats all of her spirits as living, feeling beings rather than tools to be used, as a few other celestial wizards.
* WhipItGood: She carries a whip on her at all times to defend herself rather than using her spirits for the job instead. After she loses that whip when she's sentenced to die in Edolas, she replaces it with the [[GratuitousFrench Fleuve d'étoiles]], a magical and extendable whip from Virgo, and shows that she can be quite awesome with it, even without a spirit at her side.
* WomenAreWiser: She tends to be the rational thinker of the team.
* WoundedGazelleGambit: [[spoiler: While fighting Natsu as a nure-onna, Lucy does pretty well against him, but when Natsu tries to land a blow on her, she cries and pretends to get her senses back. Natsu falls for it, allowing her to deal a critical blow on him. [[note]] Granted this has the side effect of making him very angry, and activating Lighting Flame Dragon Mode. [[/note]]]]
* YoureNotMyFather: She's unwilling to forgive Jude for inadvertently helping Phantom Lord start a guild war with Fairy Tail and refuses to acknowledge him as her family. Well, until they reconcile with each other, at least.
