!Crime Sorcière

[[folder:In General]]
[[quoteright:270:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/6cd13fa840e65cafdcc0e64066555472.jpg]]
Crime Sorcière is an independent wizard guild dedicated to the eradication of dark guilds and wizards, and hopefully Zeref himself. Founded by Jellal after he is freed from his obsession with Zeref, it starts out with only himself, Ultear, and Grimoire Heart's Merudy as its sole three members. Ultear later leaves the group due to her HeroicSacrifice, but she's eventually replaced by the freed members of the Oración Seis (sans Brain).
----
* AntiHero: They're all reformed criminals attempting to right the wrongs they've done and wiping out evil wherever they find it, and being former criminals means a somewhat more flexible set of morals. Some of them are {{Nominal Hero}}es, some are merely [[UnscrupulousHero unscrupulous]] or [[PragmaticHero pragmatic]].
* TheAtoner: The guild is made up of [[HeelFaceTurn former villains]] who wish to make up for their past transgressions.
* BadassCape: All members wear hooded blue cloaks as a uniform.
* BadassCrew: Every last one of them. Their leader is a former Wizard Saint who got the title while being at only half power at the time, and the members consist of two [[spoiler:now one]] members of Grimoire Heart's Seven Kin of Purgatory and the five main members of [[spoiler:Oración Seis, sans Brain and Kurodoa]].
* DisasterDominoes: Thanks to the evil scientists (Brain in the anime) who kidnapped Ultear, which resulted in her corrupting the other two, and ultimately the reason for Erza's backstory.
* GratuitousFrench: This guild's name literally means "Witch's Sin". Grammatically, though, it should be "Crime de Sorcière".
* HighlyConspicuousUniform: For a guild that tries to hide from the law, that doesn't stop them from wearing flashy blue {{Badass Cape}}s.
* RecruitingTheCriminal: [[spoiler:The five members of Oración Seis were recruited by Jellal kicking their asses (well, sans Hoteye) in combat, and Jellal in turn was recruited when Ultear and Merudy broke him out of jail]].
* TwoGirlsAndAGuy: The guild starts out as this, with Ultear and Merudy as the two girls and Jellal as the guy.
** Later becomes TwoGirlsToATeam, with Ultear being replaced by [[spoiler:Angel]] as the second girl.
* [[VigilanteMan Vigilante Men]]: Being an independent guild that's neither light nor dark makes them perfect for taking down dark guilds under the Magic Council's radar. Unfortunately, this also means spending their lives on the run.

!!!'''Voiced by''': Creator/DaisukeNamikawa (JP), RobertMcCollum (EN), Terri Doty (EN - young)
[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jellal_2.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:225:[[labelnote:Click here to see his pre-TimeSkip appearance]][[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jellal_1.jpg]][[/labelnote]]]]

A childhood friend of Erza's. He uses Heavenly Body Magic, letting him use the properties of astronomical objects in battle. Once a slave in the Tower of Heaven, he was corrupted by Ultear into becoming a servant of Zeref. Acting as a member of the Magic Council, he sets in motion a plot to revive the black wizard, but is defeated by Natsu and Erza. He returns without his memories after being revived by Oración Seis, but decides to atone for his past actions and dedicates himself to suppressing evil wizards wherever he finds them.

----
* TheAce: One of the strongest human characters in the series who wipes the floor with anyone if he goes all out. He's also one of the few mages shown that is able to use multiple types of magic including a spell that takes ''four high-level magic users'' to fire off.
* AccidentalPervert: He [[ThanksForTheMammary accidentally gropes Erza]].
* {{Adorkable}}: For all his badassery, he still shows signs of this when he and Erza are sheepishly apologizing to each other after the infamous AlmostKiss, or when he [[LuminescentBlush freaks out]] after accidentally touching her breasts at Ryuzetsu Land. Often overlaps with TheComicallySerious.
* AllLovingHero: When he's not BrainwashedAndCrazy, Jellal is capable of forgiving just about anyone, including [[spoiler:the woman who ''brainwashed him and ruined his life,'' to the point of forming a guild with her and helping ''her'' atone. In the anime-only Crime Sorciere episode, he quickly forgives Rusty Rose for trying to kill him while he was defenseless and take Meredy by force, even offering him a place in the guild out of pity for his loneliness.]]
* AlmostKiss: When he reunites with Erza post-TimeSkip; it's ambiguous in the manga, but the anime clearly shows him pushing her away before their lips touch.
* AmnesiacDissonance: He gets a moment to wallow in {{angst}} after being called out by Erza when they meet up during the Nirvana arc.
* ArchEnemy: To Kagura, who says he "took everything away from her" and crafted Archenemy for the sole purpose of killing him.
* ArcVillain: Of the Tower of Heaven arc.
* BadLiar: According to Erza, he has always been a terrible liar: as a child, he tries to pass himself off as the mastermind behind an escape attempt in the Tower of Heaven to cover for Erza, but Erza gets the blame anyway (ironically, she was covering for their friend Sho, the real mastermind); later, he [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy lies to Erza that he has a fiancée to give them a reason to remain apart]], but Erza doesn't buy it any more than his guildmates do.
** {{Subverted|Trope}} entirely during his time under Ultear's possession, as he is able to convince the council not only of his good nature, but that they need to fire Etherion, fakes being under control to keep Erza from killing him, tricks her into believing he had a twin, and gets everyone that Erza knew as a child to believe Erza had gone mad with power.
* {{Badass}}: He was a member of the Ten Wizard Saints, mages renowed by their immense power, when he had only half of his entire power. So, it's no surprise that he's also one of the strongest characters in the series, such that, like Jura, [[DramaPreservingHandicap he has to be weakened somehow, be it by directly weakening him or giving him some reason not to use his full power so that his opponents, even the aftermentioned Jura, have a chance against him.]] And when he's able to fight without restrictions, he's shown to be capable of defeating four of the Oración Seis in a 4 vs. 1 battle.
* BadassBoast: When against the Oración Seis (Four, since Brain was out of commission and Hoteye's claims are true) in the Tartarus Arc.
--->'''Jellal:''' "I'll be enough."
* BadassLongcoat: His general attire, though it differs among the Tower of Heaven, Nirvana, and Grand Magic Games arcs.
* [[BarrierMaiden Barrier Man]]: It turns out that he, along with two other random men who served on the council, is acting as an unwitting seal to an AntiMagic super weapon. So long as he's alive, it shouldn't be possible to activate. By the time this is revealed, the other "living" seals have already been killed.
* BeingTorturedMakesYouEvil: Initially believed to be the cause of his villainy. The end of the Tower of Heaven arc reveals the [[BrainwashedAndCrazy true cause]].
* BeleagueredChildhoodFriend: Sometimes is this for Erza.
* BenevolentBoss: While finishing the Tower of Heaven, he made it a point to treat the former slaves much better than the cult of Zeref worshippers, wanting to keep their morale high. Of course, he was also ready to slaughter them all if Erza ever blabbed about the Tower of Heaven.
* BigBadWannabe: He is the first recurring villain introduced in the series, and his goal is to resurrect Zeref, the GreaterScopeVillain (at the time anyway). Then it turns out [[TheManBehindTheMan he is being manipulated by his subordinate]], and that Zeref was never dead to begin with.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Though he recovers when Natsu beats him.
* BreakHerHeartToSaveHer: Jellal tries to do this to Erza by making up a story about a fiancée so she'll give up on him. She knows it's a lie, but chooses not to call him out on it.
* BrokenAce: He's incredibly guilty about his actions during the Tower of Heaven to the point where he refuses to be happy anymore.
* BrokenAesop: Want to save your friend from unspeakable acts? [[{{Determinator}} Run and save her]]. You'll succeed, but you'll be tortured and end up BrainwashedAndCrazy. Then you'll enslave all of your other friends, murder at least one of them, and try to resurrect [[TheDreaded the most terrible wizard ever]]. Then someone who is better at the {{shounen}} archetype punches you in the face, freeing you from your insanity.
* CastingAShadow: Capable of using Darkness Magic.
* ChekhovsGun: He disguises himself as his Edolas counterpart Mystogan during the Grand Magic Games. It even lets him evade Council arrest when he's unmasked, but it doesn't fool them for long.
* TheChessmaster: During the Tower of Heaven arc. He even had a chess board to represent the characters.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: With Erza.
* TheCoatsAreOff: When Crime Sorcière shows up [[BigDamnHeroes fashionably late]] to Albareth's ongoing invasion of Fiore, Jellal shows up without his cape, his face in full view, saying that all he cares about at this point is [[spoiler:stopping Zeref once and for all]].
* TheComicallySerious: He joins Fairy Tail's B team disguised as Mystogan. When Erza calls him, he tells her to shush.
** His humiliating loss to Jura thanks to interference from his guildmates, after which he shamefully trudges back to B Team.
* CosmicPlaything: Enslaved, tortured, brainwashed, atomized by Etherion, arrested with either a life sentence or execution and occasionally tortured some more for fun, and ultimately freed by the brainwasher only to have much of the world still hate him for actions he didn't consciously perform, leaving him constantly on the run. Life's a bitch, huh, Jellal?
* CoverBlowingSuperpower: He attempts to use a powerful signature spell while undercover in the Grand Magic Games. Ultimately {{defied|Trope}} in the end by Ultear, who forces him to throw the match before he can blow his cover to the whole audience.
* CovertPervert: When he unintentionally [[ThanksForTheMammaries grabs Erza's breasts]] in Ryuuzetsu Land, he briefly thinks about how soft they are before letting go.
* DarkIsEvil[=/=]GravityMaster: His Altairis spell, which is a sphere of dark energy that bends all shadows towards it. Natsu comments the spell makes him feel sick. Also, he hasn't used any Darkness Magic since his HeelFaceTurn.
* DarkMessiah: When he was BrainwashedAndCrazy.
* DeathFromAbove: His Grand Chariot spell and his attempt at casting Abyss Break.
** Sema is even worse.
* DeathSeeker: Carries this tendency after being told of his villainous deeds by Erza. [[GetAHoldOfYourselfMan It's Erza's duty to snap him out of it]].
* ElementalPowers: Has been shown to use Fire, Darkness, and Light Magics. While he hasn't shown other elemental magics directly yet, he is capable of using Abyss Break, which needs the user to know Fire, Earth, Water, and Wind Magics.
** It also helps that he is an CaptainErsatz of Sieg Hart, who was an elemental master in ''Manga/RaveMaster''.
* EvilFormerFriend: To Erza, at first.
* EvilGloating: Mocks Simon after his HeroicSacrifice. [[ShutUpHannibal Natsu's response is to]] [[TalkToTheFist punch him in the face]].
* {{Expy}}: The average ''Manga/RaveMaster'' fan will take one look at him and say "Holy crap! It's [[Manga/RaveMaster Sieg Hart]]!" There's absolutely no physical difference between the two, particularly before Mashima's ArtEvolution, and he has similarly-named spells and occasionally makes the same two-finger gesture Sieg always does when using his magic. It's [[WordOfGod supposedly]] just {{Fanservice}}, though.
* EyeScream: He ''intentionally'' injured his own eyes during his "fight" with Zero, in order to break Midnight's illusions.
** The condition of his eyes is debatable, given that he was able to open them afterwards, with no visible injuries directly to his eyeballs (although they were still bleeding).
** Indeed, they're just fine when he reappears.
* FacialMarkings: Has a tattoo around his right eye.
* FallenHero: His childhood personality is actually the most hero-like of any character. Unfortunately for everyone, Ultear brainwashed him into becoming one of the most despicable criminals in the series. It's made even more tragic since he loses any true semblance of freedom and a lifetime of happiness with Erza.
* FrickinLaserBeams: Capable of using beams of light.
* FullContactMagic: His basic use for his magic is to [[BoringButPractical move at high speeds and punch people.]]
* GameBreakingInjury: At the end of his battle with Natsu and Erza, he attempts to destroy them along with the Tower of Heaven with Abyss Break, but is held back by pain from a seemingly minor injury Erza gave him earlier, allowing Natsu to finish him off.
* GambitRoulette: His plan to revive Zeref includes using his psychic projection disguised as one of the council members to manipulate them into firing Etherion and then having the R-System absorb the enormous magical energy, which would provide enough to commence the ritual.
* GuestStarPartyMember: Of Fairy Tail's B team.
* GuiltComplex: Over his actions during the Tower of Heaven arc. It's the reason he formed Crime Sorcière.
* HandicappedBadass: Crushed his own eyes to dispel Midnight's illusion. Time will tell if the blindness remains. [[spoiler:[[UnexplainedRecovery It doesn't]]]]
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Starts as a {{Face}}, then [[HeelFaceBrainwashing brainwashed]] into becoming a {{Heel}}, and finally [[LaserGuidedAmnesia loses his memories]] and becomes a {{Face}} again. After regaining his memories and founding Crime Sorciere, he is firmly of {{Face}} status.
* HeroesWantRedheads: He and Erza were very close back when they were child slaves, giving Erza her current surname based on her hair color. His current feelings for her are likely a combination of their childhood relationship pre-brainwashing and her refusal to abandon him during his amnesiac phase.
* HeroicSacrifice: Erza secretly believes that after being freed from "Zeref's ghost", he fused with Etherion in her stead to prevent it from exploding.
* HolyHandGrenade: His Grand Chariot spell.
* InsecureLoveInterest: He feels that he has no right to be with Erza after all he has done.
* InstantRunes: He mimics Mystogan's magic to keep his disguise in the Grand Magic Games authentic.
* InterruptedSuicide: After he casts a self-destruction spell on Nirvana, he casts the same one on himself. It takes time to work though, and Erza talks him out of it.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: After his reunion with Erza after the time-skip, he makes up a story about a fiancée so she'll give up on him because he believes he has no right to fall in love with someone who "walks in the light", and he only wishes for Erza to be happy.
* ItsPersonal: His reason for fighting the Oración Seis without Merudy's help.
* JapanesePronouns: Normally uses "ore", but had to stop himself and switch to "watashi" when posing as Mystogan.
* KissingDiscretionShot: Though it turns out to be an AlmostKiss.
* KnightOfCerebus: While the preceding Phantom Lord arc might have been the first to shift the series to DarkerAndEdgier overtones, Jellal was the first villain to conclusively kill a heroic character outside of a flashback (a trait that was only copied by Future Rogue several arcs later) and intentionally threaten a large population (Lyon hoped to defeat Deliora before it could go on another rampage, and the other antagonists up to this point focused on specific people). He also has an incredibly dark and sad past, and was (and still is) one of the most powerful characters in the series, such that to defeat him, Natsu had to activate [[SuperMode Dragon Force]].
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: In the Nirvana arc. He gets his memories back over time, though.
* LightEmUp[=/=]StarPower: His primary magic is Heavenly Body Magic, which revolves around astronomical objects, but is much more than that.
* LightIsNotGood: While BrainwashedAndCrazy, it wasn't, but now it is.
* LivingMacguffin: He is the only key to Face still alive.
** Not anymore (he's still alive, but no longer a key).
* LightningBruiser: While not physically strong as Laxus, for example, Jellal's still strong enough to incapacitate Natsu with a few punches and kicks, and even to block Cobra's poison-enhanced punch and subsequently throw him against Racer with great force with just a backhand swipe; is fast enough to keep up with even Erza, Natsu and Racer even when not using Meteor; and can take incredible amounts of damage and keep going, such as Natsu's Dragon Force attacks, and even survive the subsequent explosion of condensated Etherion, which would destroy anyone in atomic level, even when he himself was in the center of it. He was, after all, one of the Ten Wizard Saints...
* MadeASlave: Some fans consider it an ironic TearJerker that the only time he was truly free was when he [[LaserGuidedAmnesia didn't know the value of it]].
* MeaningfulName: "Jellal" is a verbal variation of the Arabic word (Jalal) for "greatness".
* MindOverMatter: Is able to use telekinesis and telepathy too.
* MistakenIdentity: Wendy "remembers" the time he saved her life, but it was actually Mystogan. Which makes it particularly sad if you recall that Jellal was happy to have learned he supposedly saved someone, in spite of all the pain he caused...
* MrFanservice: Acknowledged both InUniverse and out as one of the more attractive guys, particularly after he loses the crazy.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: After getting amnesia and being told by a ''very'' pissed off Erza about his past deeds.
* OneHeadTaller: Compared to Erza.
* TheParalyzer: His Bind Snake spell has this effect.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Has quite a few spells that are incredibly destructive, such as Abyss Break, Self-Destruction Spell, Grand Chariot, and probably also his strongest magic, the Sema spell.
* PlayingWithFire: Capable of using Fire Magic strong enough that Natsu compares eating it to eating Etherion, and the effects are also the same, as Natsu enters Dragon Force by consuming it.
* ReallyDeadMontage: Except since they NeverFoundTheBody, he gets to come back.
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: They pull this on him twice, and he's still alive, too.
* ReformedButRejected: After developing amnesia and deciding he's a good guy, it takes several chapters/episodes to fully convince Erza he's on her side, and being [[TakingTheBullet shot in the gut]] to convince Natsu to accept a power-up from him. After helping save the day, he's [[DiabolusExMachina promptly arrested]].
* SecretArt[=/=]ColonyDrop: True Heavenly Body Magic: Sema.
* ShipTease: He gets so much with Erza that even after personally trying to [[ShipSinking sink the ship]], they're still the most strongly hinted couple.
* ShirtlessScene: During the Tower of Heaven arc his [[ClothingDamage shirt is destroyed]]. When he wakes up he's still half naked.
* ShootTheShaggyDog: Turns out that the key Grimoire Heart went after while he was running rampant did nothing. He spent eight years as a puppet and is doomed to stay in prison with a death sentence so he could be a momentary diversion for gathering a useless trinket.
* SingleTargetSexuality: Jellal has never shown the slightest interest in any other girl than Erza. [[NotDistractedByTheSexy And he spent several years traveling]] [[IgnoreTheFanservice with two very hot female guildmates]], so that's saying a ''lot''.
* SlasherSmile: For pretty much for the entirety of the Tower of Heaven Arc.
* SlouchOfVillainy: For most of the Tower of Heaven Arc.
* TheSmartGuy: On Fairy Tail's B Team in the TournamentArc, disguised as Mystogan.
* SoapOpera: In Jellal alone we have clones, a twin (for a short period of time), the mysterious look-alike, brainwashing, a coma, and amnesia. There's also the convoluted relationship with Erza.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Before the official Del Rey translation, everyone though his name was "Gerard". [[Manga/RaveMaster At least no one called him Jaker]].
** On a lesser note, there's been some debate over how to spell his last name (some call it "Fernandes"), but the Kodansha translation has settled on "Fernandez".
* StarCrossedLovers: With Erza. [[WordOfGod Mashima]] even drew a [[https://twitter.com/hiro_mashima/status/221263457977249792 picture of them]] for {{Tanabata}}, a festival linked to the most famous Star-crossed lovers story in Japan.
** Gradually downplayed since the first TimeSkip. First, Jellal is freed from prison with his memories back, now firmly on the side of good and focused on atonement. Then, two people seeking vengeance for his past actions are pacified when the person [[TheManBehindTheMan really]] [[BrainwashedAndCrazy responsible]] takes the blame. Finally, the Council that would have sought to re-arrest him was almost entirely massacred by Tartaros, with the SoleSurvivor accepting that Jellal has reformed, so he doesn't really have to hide anymore. Currently, the only thing really keeping him and Erza apart is his own insecurity.
* StartOfDarkness: He was a child slave who was brainwashed in a single moment of weakness.
* SuperSpeed: His Meteor spell, which is fast enough to let him completely outspeed Natsu (Unless Natsu's in his SuperMode, that is), Racer, and has even earned praise from Jet.
* TraumaCongaLine: [[spoiler: Captured and forced to work as a child slave, then tortured and brainwashed into the very type of person he was fighting against. Then after being beaten back to his senses he goes into a coma from Etherion poisoning, he wakes up with amnesia. He then finds and releases a giant superweapon in order to destroy it via a HeroicSacrifice only to fail and use up his remaining strength in the process. Willingly goes in to jail to atone for the sins he can't even remember committing where he is tortured via electrocution and starvation. He gets better.]]
* UnexplainedRecovery: The Tower of Heaven arc ends with him submerged in Etherion, which has enough power to atomize a nation, but he shows up two arcs later simply comatose and amnesiac. The Tartarus arc has him ''[[EyeScream crushing his own eyeballs]]'' to break Midnight's illusion, and they look just fine when he shows up at the end of the arc.
* UnresolvedSexualTension: With Erza.
* UnwittingPawn: Ultear's before his HeelFaceTurn.
* UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans: His main motivation as a villain.
* VigilanteMan: Becomes this after the time skip. He forms Crime Sorcière (whose only other members are Ultear and Merudy) that purposely deals with and eliminates dark guilds (an act prohibited by the Magic Council). Also, he's on the hunt for Zeref.
* VillainousBreakdown: In the Tower of Heaven arc, he maintains a calm demeanor even in the face of a furious Erza's insults and attacks. He keeps this attitude while fighting Natsu... until [[DestructiveSavior he]] starts destroying the Tower, sending Jellal into a rage. He wants to kill Natsu so badly at this point that even when Erza, who he needs alive for his plans, gets in the way to stop him, he fires off a deadly attack with little hesitation. When the attack [[HeroicSacrifice kills Simon]], he laughs maniacally and calls the action pointless because he ''still'' wants to kill Natsu and Erza. When Natsu gains the upper hand in [[SuperMode Dragon Force]], he engages a MotiveRant, his speech becoming progressively more unhinged, and he finally prepares an attack that will ''destroy the tower'' (which is what pissed him off in the first place), convincing himself that he can rebuild it even though he'd thrown away all his unwitting slaves by this point.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: The reason he tries to revive [[UltimateEvil Zeref]] in the Tower of Heaven arc is because he thinks it would create a world where everyone could be free (i.e., having total control and taking away everyone else's free will).
* WhatBeautifulEyes: Jellal's eyes are distinctly more detailed than most males in the manga.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: He tries to bring back Black Wizard Zeref and is willing to kill just about anyone who tries to stop him with power that got him counted as one of the Ten Wizard Saints (oh, and it was Siegrain who qualified, who Jellal made appear more real by giving ''half his power'' to). All because he spent his entire childhood as a slave and someone came up to him and said "Hey, want to make sure that you never go through this again?"...[[spoiler:and then that said person brainwashed him, drove him insane, and then {{Mind Rape}}d him for eight years]].
* TheWorfEffect: One-shoted by Midnight just to show how powerful Midnight really was.
* WorfHadTheFlu: According to WordOfGod, he was only beaten because he had wasted a massive amount of magic power and was severely injured by using his Self-Destruction spell. Indeed, when Jellal went up against Midnight (and Racer, Cobra, and Angel) again at full power, he wiped the floor with him, with the only [[EyeScream injury]] Jellal sustained being self-inflicted.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: His hair is blue.

[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ultear_2.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:225:[[labelnote:Click here to see her pre-TimeSkip appearance]][[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ultear_1.jpg]][[/labelnote]]]]

A former member of Grimoire Heart and leader of the 7 Kin of Purgatory. She uses [[TimeMaster Arc of Time]], which gives her control over time for inanimate objects. She is also the daughter of Ur, whom she initially believes to have abandoned her. She manipulates a good number of villains throughout the series (Lyon, Jellal, and even Hades) to achieve what she wants. However, after finally realizing the truth of her ParentalAbandonment, she turns over a new leaf. After using Last Ages to save everyone's life, her RapidAging and successful atonement causes her to leave the guild. Now an old woman, she is happy she was born for the first time in her life.

----
* AbsoluteCleavage: Pre-TimeSkip only.
* ActionGirl: A very powerful wizard adept at the lost magic Arc of Time as well as a gifted ice wizard.
* AdaptationDyeJob: Her eyes change from brown to red in the 2014 anime.
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: She is tall, beautiful, raven-haired, pale-skinned, aloof and graceful.
* AltoVillainess: both in the original japanese and dubs.
* AmusingInjuries: Natsu punches her in the face ''hard'' while she is disguised as Zalty on Galuna Island. [[MoodWhiplash It isn't until she's in the middle of a serious discussion with Siegrain the next day that]] [[CrowningMomentOfFunny her cheek swells like a balloon]].
-->'''Siegrain:''' "That certainly ''is'' a {{delayed reaction}}!"
* BareYourMidriff: Thanks to ClothingDamage.
* BerserkButton: Being called "Ul" (or "[[DubNameChange Urtear]]" in the English manga). No doubt this is connected to her disdain for her mother.
* BigBad: Of the Galuna Island and the Tower of Heaven arcs, where she manipulates Lyon and Jellal respectively to help achieve her goals (though they still remain TheHeavy of their arcs).
* BigDamnHeroes: Pulls one on Natsu to save him from Future Rogue, who had clearly defeated him.
** She does it again in [[spoiler:Chapter 474, saving Wendy and Cherria from [[TimeMaster DiMaria]].]]
* BrokenAce: She's beautiful, intelligent, and very powerful with several magical disciplines under her belt. She's also a bitch with MommyIssues. At least pre-HeelFaceTurn.
* BrokenBird: Like Jellal, she's guilty over her actions as a member of Grimoire Heart. She doesn't truly feel happy until after her HeroicSacrifice.
* TheBusCameBack: [[spoiler:Guess who's back in Chapter 474, and looks exactly the same as she did before she used her DangerousForbiddenTechnique?]]
* CastFromLifespan: Last Ages doesn't kill her immediately like she thought it would, but it does turn her into a elderly woman.
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: The council, Jellal, and Hades
* ClothingDamage: During her fight with Gray.
* CrystalBall: Also her WeaponOfChoice.
* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: Last Ages, which is a ResetButton that sends the world back a certain amount of time in exchange for the user's time, leaving them to the edge of their lifespan.
* DarkActionGirl: While a member of Grimoire Heart.
* TheDragon: She is frequently seen working for some new ArcVillain trying to bring back Zeref or one of his creations.
* DragonWithAnAgenda: And she always has some goal other than that. In other words, she always has ''[[JustForPun ultear]]''[[JustForPun ior motives]].
* DubNameChange: In the Kodansha translation of the manga, she states her real name is "Urtear" as she is "Ur's tear", and that she changed her name to "Ultear" in contempt of her mother.
* EasilyForgiven: {{Subverted|Trope}}. The reason Merudy forgives her is thanks to her "emotional connection", letting her know [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone how devastated she was by her own actions]] and the honest [[ParentalSubstitute love she had for her]]. The fact that she tries to kill herself before letting Merudy "stain her hands" also helps.
** Played straight with her other guildmate Jellal, who doesn't show the slightest bit of hostility to her despite knowing that she has royally screwed up his life.
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: Like her mother, she has a very pale complextion.
* EvilCostumeSwitch: Ultear goes from the {{Miko}}[=-like=] costume she wears as a member of the Magic Council to a current {{Stripperific}} outfit when she is revealed to be the one who manipulated Jellal.
* EvilGloating: Tries it on Gray in the Sirius Island arc. [[ShutUpHannibal His response is to]] [[TalkToTheFist punch her in the face]].
* FanDisservice: Her Last Ages destroys a large portion of her clothing, as well as her skin and ultimately ages her body into a shriveled old woman.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Ultear's HeelFaceTurn is foreshadowed as early as the Galuna Arc. She really had no reason to restore the destroyed village. It gained her nothing and even would have given a hint to an enemy smarter than Natsu just how powerful she really is. Ultear even brushed off Jellal's query with a filppant answer. It's an early indication that Ultear is not all bad and operates under an IDidWhatIHadToDo philosophy.
* FormFittingWardrobe: Her clothes cling to her body rather well, and in just the right ways.
* FreudianExcuse: The reason why she is so hateful towards her mother and does what she does as a Grimoire Heart member is because she thinks she had been abandoned by her mother after seeing her with Gray and Lyon; in truth she was kidnapped and Ur was told she was killed. She also tries to create the World of Great Magic so she can go back in time and be with her mother again.
* FuroScene: In the manga, after Jellal is defeated, readers are treated to a scene of Ultear taking a bath and talking to Hades.
* GhostMemory: After she falls into the ocean while fighting Gray, Ultear experiences Ur's memories since Ur's body was turned into water and drifted out to sea. This finally allows Ultear to realize that she was never abandoned in the first place and just how much Ur cherished her.
* GiantWaistRibbon: To help show off the [[HartmanHips hips]].
* GirlishPigtails: When she was younger.
* GoingCommando: Her dress' leg slit is high enough to tell she's not wearing ''anything'' under there.
* GoodCostumeSwitch: More subtle this time, but she stops wearing makeup and her clothes are generally less revealing after she leaves Grimore Heart.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Later gets one in the shape of an [[XMarksTheHero X]] on her back.
* GreenThumb: Just a part of what she can do with her time magic.
* HairDecorations: There's an emerging pattern here.
* HeelFaceTurn: After finally cluing in that she was loved by her mother all along, Ultear helps Fairy Tail defeat Hades by restoring the destroyed Sirius Tree and Fairy Tail's magic along with it. She later joins Crime Sorcière.
* HeelRealization: Has one ''after'' her HeelFaceTurn, when she backs out of killing Rogue before he has a chance to turn into his evil future self, which makes her realize just how far she is from being redeemed.
* HeroicSacrifice: She uses her Last Ages spell to send the world back in time for one minute at the cost of her own time, leaving her a frail, elderly woman. Her spell causes everyone in the world to see into the future for that one minute, which proves invaluable to the wizards fighting for their lives against the dragons.
* HimeCut: As a Magic Council member and her initial {{miko}} attire.
* AnIcePerson: She manifests Ice-Make Magic identical to her mother Ur's, the strongest ice wizard in the series up until Silver's appearance, during her battle with Gray.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Her weapon of choice is a CrystalBall.
* InterruptedSuicide: She tries killing herself to avoid having Merudy stain her hands by killing her in revenge for destroying her town, but Merudy saves her.
* KarmaHoudini: She was quite the grade A bi-atch prior to her HeelFaceTurn, so even though she TookALevelInKindness, it's rather odd how she never really answered for her time as a Heel. Granted, she may have gotten off relatively unscathed, and history may have let her off the hook, but her ''[[HeelRealization conscience]]'' never did so.
* KickTheDog: During the Tenrou Island Arc, Ultear was more than willing to kill Juvia. Not because it was necessary to obtain Zeref (she had already done so by then) but simply as revenge against Gray for being her mother's student.
* LadyOfBlackMagic: Tends to be very calm and composed in fights, and is a very adept in using her Arc of Time and Ice-Make.
* LamarckWasRight: She inherits Ice-Make Magic identical to her mother's.
* LeotardOfPower: Her new attire after the TimeSkip.
* LoveRedeems: Both her genuine love for her mother and Merudy change her for the better.
* MakeupIsEvil: She's stops wearing lipstick post HeelFaceTurn.
* ManipulativeBitch: Was her default mode for many years. She gets better, though.
* MeaningfulName: Ur named her "Ultear" because she was so overwhelmed with happiness at Ultear's birth that she cried tears of joy. It's for this reason that [[SpellMyNameWithAnS some people insist Ur should be named "Ul"]].
* MommyIssues: She feels the Ur abandoned her and replace her with Gray and Lyon.
* NiceShoes
* OneeSama: For Merudy.
* ParentalAbandonment: Played with. Ultear was taken by Ur to a magical research lab because she had too much magical power in her body and it was killing her. The lab people, being less than moral, told Ur that Ultear died, then continued their cruel research on the girl. When she managed to escape, she saw Ur together with Gray and Lyon and assumed that she was abandoned and replaced by her mother, leading her aspirations to go back in time to before she hated Ur and reclaim the happiness she thought she was denied. What she failed to realize was that her mother thought she was dead. As for her father, he reportedly left them both at childhood.
* ParentalSubstitute: To Merudy.
* PetTheDog: Randomly restores the village of Galuna Island with her time magic after it is destroyed, which she [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]].
** Her relationship with Merudy is also her main redeeming factor as a member of Grimoire Heart. She spared Merudy as a child while destroying her hometown, and went out of her way to make sure Merudy would come with her while trying to make a getaway with Zeref.
* PimpedOutDress: Not to the extent of being covered in jewels, but it's pretty fancy. In the manga it's even animal print.
* PinballProjectile: Her preferred method of fighting.
* PoorCommunicationKills: Her whole dilemma would've been solved if she had bothered to actually reveal herself to Ur instead of assuming everything.
* PowerPerversionPotential: There's not exactly anything stopping her from aging her opponents' clothes out of existence.
* PutOnABus: After using her Last Ages spell and prematurely reaching an elderly age, she hasn't appeared again other than to subtlety say goodbye to the other two members of Crime Sorcière.
* RapidAging: The result of using Last Ages, even if it turned back time for a minute. She doesn't reveal this to anyone though her fellow guildmates, and only Gray manages to figure it out.
* RavenHairIvorySkin: Has fair skin, long black hair, and is very beautiful.
* SenselessSacrifice: {{Subverted|Trope}}. She ''thinks'' she was unable to save a single life as she intended to rewind time for much more than one "measly" minute, not realizing her spell saved ''countless'' lives.
* SensualSpandex: She uses it to sprout Time Arc bubbles. And yes, it looks amazing.
* SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong: Her primary goal as a Grimoire Heart member, although in this case what is "wrong" is her relationship with her mother. This gets her into trouble later when she decides that since she's going to fix the past anyway, she has carte blanche to do whatever evil acts necessary to get there since those actions would also be set right via time travel.
* SexyBacklessOutfit: Her Magic Council outfit at the beginning of the series was the only time (aside from a regular shirt in the aftermath of the Tenrou Island arc and [[her modest outfit as an old lady]]) that she didn't expose her back. Her [[TattooedCrook guild symbol]] is on her back as well for extra fetish points. Her post-TimeSkip scar doesn't make it any less appealing.
* ShapeShifter: She is quite proficient with Transformation Magic, though not to the point that she can fool a Dragon Slayer's nose.
* ShesGotLegs: Long, sleek, and toned. She almost always has one of them bared to mid thigh ''at a minimum''.
* ShipperOnDeck: Rather blatantly ships Jellal with Erza.
* ShoutOut: Her "Last Ages" spell is one of many shout outs to ''Manga/RaveMaster''; in this case, it's based on a very similar spell used by Nibel, which is used to different effect but shares the RapidAging side-effect.
* ShowgirlSkirt
* {{Sideboob}}: Because AbsoluteCleavage just isn't enough.
* SlaveCollar: Wears what looks like a belt around her neck both before and after her costume change. [[{{Irony}} Ironic once you learn of her past]]...
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Because of her name's connection to her mother's, some argue her name should be "Urtear". The Creator/FUNimation dub even calls her "Urtear" in one episode since they translate her mother's name as "Ur", but switches to using "Ultear" later. The Kodansha translation eventually sets things straight by having "Urtear" be her "real" name, and "Ultear" as a name she fashioned for herself to distance herself from her mother.
* TheStarscream: In the Sirius Island arc, she tries to get Gray to use Iced Shell on Hades, which would essentially kill them both, as she wants Zeref's power all to herself. She didn't count on Gray [[ObfuscatingStupidity playing along]] though.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: She looks like a younger Ur.
* SuperpowerLottery: She can control time, after all.
* TearsOfRemorse: Sheds them upon learning the truth about her "abandonment."
* TimeMaster: Her primary magic, the Arc of Time, lets her [[ResetButton rewind]], [[CaffeineBulletTime slow down]], [[RapidAging fast forward]], or [[TimeStandsStill completely stop]] the "time" of an object. It's useless on people though, like so many other spells in this setting that would be completely broken otherwise.
* TookALevelInKindness: Over the TimeSkip.
* VaporWear: Seriously, hasn't anyone[[note]]but Lucy and Cana[[/note]] heard of a bra?
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Even after her HeelFaceTurn, she seriously contemplates killing Rogue so he won't turn into the evil Future Rogue. It's quickly {{subverted|Trope}} when she realizes she can't go through with it.
* [[TheManBehindTheMan The Woman Behind The Man]]: For Lyon and Jellal.
* WomanInWhite: While on the Council.
* {{Yandere}}: Appears to be one for Zeref pre-HeelFaceTurn.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: She doesn't say it to Jellal's face, but she did admit as much to Hades. [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] over the TimeSkip when she breaks Jellal out of prison.
** Also applies to Hades himself, as shown when she tries to get Gray to kill him.
* YouRemindMeOfX: The reason she developed a soft spot for Merudy was because she reminded her of her younger self.
* ZettaiRyouiki: Grade A.

Another former member of Grimoire Heart's Seven Kin. She has power over people's physical and emotional senses using her Magilty Sense magic. She's been very attached to Ultear ever since she saved her from her destroyed hometown, which Ultear ironically destroyed without Merudy knowing. Even after learning the truth, her love for Ultear leads her to leave Grimoire Heart with her.

----
* AbsurdlySharpBlade: Her Magilty Sodom spell can somehow cut Juvia's body, which is [[NighInvulnerable made of water]].
** It's explained that the blades don't so much ''cut'' her, as they force the pain receptors in her brain to make her ''feel'' as though she's been cut.
* ActionGirl: Personally trained by Ultear.
* AdaptationDyeJob: Her eye color changes from green to red in the 2014 anime.
* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: She declares her familiar love for Ultear after she tries to commit suicide to atone for all the things she had done (including destroying Merudy's hometown).
* BadassCape: Pre-TimeSkip outfit only; now she wears the Crime Sorciere cloak.
* BareYourMidriff: Thanks to ClothingDamage.
* BerserkButton: She is normally fairly unemotional pre-HeelFaceTurn, but it turns out hurting "her" Ultear is a huge one for her. For that reason, she wants to kill Gray more than anybody else on the island during the Sirius Island arc.
%%* ClothingDamage
* DarkMagicalGirl: At first.
* DidntSeeThatComing: Was clearly ''not'' expecting Juvia to be so powerful during their battle on Sirius Island.
* DoomedHometown: Merudy cooperates with Ultear's schemes because Ultear saved her when her town was destroyed and told her that awakening Zeref would allow her to restore it. When Zancrow informs her that Ultear destroyed her town in the first place, she does ''not'' take it well.
* EmotionlessGirl: At first.
* TheEmpath: Her magic allows her to share someone else's emotions after coming into contact with Juvia.
* EvilCounterpart: To Juvia at first. Both had someone they loved very much (Juvia loved Gray while Merudy loved Ultear), which were the main reason for them to fight. In the english dub, Juvia even admits that she was once like Merudy.
* FanservicePack: After the TimeSkip, the years have been kind to her.
* FormFittingWardrobe
* GenkiGirl: Post-TimeSkip
%%* GreenEyes
* HairDecorations: Wears some sort of gold wing-like headgear around her ears in her introduction.
* HappilyAdopted: Ultear found her as a child and took her in. Merudy loves Ultear very much and even refers to Ultear as her mother in a flashback. That doesn't change even after she finds out Ultear was the one who destroyed her hometown.
* HeadphonesEqualIsolation: While a member of Grimoire Heart.
* LeotardOfPower: Pre-TimeSkip.
* LittleMissBadass: ''[[{{Badass}} Erza]]'' is hesitant to fight her in when they first meet. [[FridgeHorror Digest that for a moment]].
* MoralityPet: To Ultear.
* PetTheDog: She helps Juvia out after their battle when Juvia faints and later begged Ultear to spare her.
* RapunzelHair: Post-TimeSkip.
* ReiAyanamiExpy: A young girl with short pink hair and special magical abilities who shows little to no emotion and is extremely devoted to her parental figure. By the timeskip, she has defrosted into a very outgoing and emotional person.
* RoboSpeak: When she's introduced, she pauses between words and refers to her mission to "exterminate" and "annihilate" her enemies as the "prime directive", and she even gave the members of Fairy Tail numbers for the order in which she would kill them.
* RoseHairedSweetie: She starts out as TheStoic, but becomes a perfect example of the cheerful subtype after the timeskip.
* SheIsAllGrownUp: Contrast her pre-TimeSkip appearance with her post-TimeSkip appearance. No, you're not the only one who noticed.
* ShoutOut: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]]; according to WordOfGod her name just came up out of the blue, then he saw that the name was very similar to [[VideoGame/TalesOfEternia a certain RPG character]], he regretted it.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: There was some debate among the scanlators regarding whether it's "Meldy" or "Meredy" before the Kodansha release went with "Merudy".
* TheStoic: At first.
* StormOfBlades: One of her spells, [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Magilty Sodom]].
* SugarAndIcePersonality: When she's introduced, she's a stoic and cold girl who only shows her warm and somewhat childlike side to Ultear. Over the TimeSkip, her warmer personality took over.
* SympathyForTheDevil: [[spoiler: When her former comrade Rusty appeared after seven years she showed true concern for him. When he threatened to kill her and asked why she wouldn´t attack him, she claims that she doesn´t need to use her sensory magic to realize how miserable he was and begged him to stop. She didn´t even show any resentment towards him after Oracion Seis saved her and Jellal.]]
* {{Synchronization}}: Her magic allows her to connect two or more people's physical and emotional senses to one another, including her own.
* TakingYouWithMe: Adds herself to the Gray-Juvia link when Juvia begins overwhelming her so that, no matter which girl dies, so will Gray. Juvia stops her.
* ThreePointLanding
* TookALevelInCheerfulness: After the TimeSkip, she's grown from a very serious, angry kid into a very relaxed, cheerful person.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Does this to Juvia due to seeing her as a weakling. It isn't until she stated that Gary is the top on her list of hits that she realized what a mistake she made.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Ultear. Even after finding out that Ultear was the one who took everything away from her in the first place, Merudy loves her and wants to stay by her side no matter what.
* WhenSheSmiles: Noted by Juvia.
* {{Yandere}}: Shown to be one towards Ultear at first, stating that she would kill Gray for hurting "her" Ultear. She seems to have grown out of it by the timeskip.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Her hair is pink.
* YouKilledMyFather: When she finds out her dear Ultear was the one who destroyed her home and killed everyone she knew and loved and confronts her about it, this trope is pretty much what Ultear reads her nasty DeathGlare to mean after admitting to doing just that.

!Tower of Heaven

[[folder:In General]]
A group of slaves in the Tower of Heaven, a structure made by a cult of evil wizards for the purpose of resurrecting the black wizard Zeref. They befriended Erza and Jellal as children. They were turned against Erza by Jellal, who they assist in building the tower as workers with benefits rather than slaves.
----
* ChildhoodFriends: With Erza.
* EvilFormerFriend: When they're introduced, they kidnap Erza with the intention of sacrificing her to the Tower of Heaven.
* HeelFaceTurn: All of them turn against Jellal once they realize how crazy he is.
* HeelRealization: Simon realized it for the others longer than they do.
* MadeASlave: Like all children in the Tower of Heaven.
* MoreThanMindControl: Jellal tells them that Erza had [[DrunkWithPower gone mad with her newfound magical power]] and tried leading them into a trap, and keeps feeding them lies for years to ensure they remain faithful to him.
** The English dub tweaks things a bit by saying that Jellal ensured their loyalty with a mind control spell that only works ''after'' tricking them all the same (which Simon resists thanks to the PowerOfTrust). [[FridgeBrilliance This makes more sense out of their almost insane hostility towards Erza despite their earlier love for her, and their swift return to their original friendliness once they realize they were being manipulated]].
* QuirkyMinibossSquad: To Jellal during the Tower of Heaven arc.
* TrueCompanions: They were this to Erza as a child.

A young man who uses Card Magic to trap others inside cards. He views Erza as an older sister even when he believes that she had betrayed them.

----
* AmbiguouslyBrown: One of the Q&A sections (hosted by Lucy and Mira, no less) notes the problem with this trope since Sho and the others should've been inside the tower for most of the time (except when they kidnapped Erza). Lucy [[WildMassGuessing takes a guess]] and theorizes that Sho could've been working on the outer walls of the tower and spent so much time in the sun that his skin eventually tanned into its current color. Mira accepts this theory, but Lucy points out that it was just a [[ShrugOfGod guess]].
* DarkSkinnedBlonde: This has lead to quite a bit of WildMassGuessing, both among the fandom and InUniverse.
* DeathDealer: Sho's magic involves the use of cards, either as prison dimensions or projectiles.
* GoMadFromTheRevelation: Sho, who was already quite the fanatic when it came to Jellal, loses it when Erza provides a contradictory version of the past.

A large man with a missing jaw who uses Darkness Magic. He has a long-standing crush on Erza, and is the only one of her friends who doesn't believe Jellal's lies of her betrayal. He also turns out to be Kagura's older brother.

----
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: In the manga, his appearance was more brutish and his upper teeth could usually be seen over his metal jaw early on. The anime changed this (as well as his child appearance) into a more "scarred-Bishonen" type appearance. Mashima probably thought making him "a tad ugly" would get the audience to sympathize with him more during his death. [[TearJerker It worked]].
* CastingAShadow: He specializes in darkness magic.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: He has been in love with Erza since they were kids.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Simon's uses Darkness Magic, yet he is the first to switch to Fairy Tail's side.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: He dies in Erza's arms.
* DyingDeclarationOfLove: Subverted in that he never actually confesses to Erza, he just thinks it.
** Subverted again as Erza tells Wally that she now knew how he felt all along at the end of the arc.
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: All his friends knew about his crush on Erza.
* EyepatchOfPower: To cover his missing eye.
* EyeScream: Simon lost an eye and the lower half of his jaw during the slave revolt.
* GentleGiant: Despite being absolutely massive, he only uses his bulk to shield others.
* GeniusBruiser: Is well informed about Team Natsu's abilities and has heard of the dreaded Trinity Raven before meeting them himself.
* GoodAllAlong: He never was truly working for Jellal.
* GreenEyedMonster: Towards Jellal, since he knew about Erza's feelings for him.
* HeroicSacrifice[=/=]TakingTheBullet: Simon takes an attack meant to kill both Erza and Natsu by himself, [[KilledOffForReal and the results are rather predictable.]]
* InterruptedDeclarationOfLove: Eight years ago, he tried to confesses to Erza during the slave revolt. [[RealityEnsues He got blasted in the face doing it.]]
* KilledOffForReal: Takes the bullet for Erza and Natsu and is one of the few characters, let alone heroic characters, to be killed.

!!Jellal Fernandez

--->'''Jellal:''' "I'll be enough."
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: With Erza.
* GuestStarPartyMember: Of Fairy Tail's B team.
* OneHeadTaller: Compared to Erza.
* UnresolvedSexualTension: With Erza.

----
* AbsoluteCleavage: Pre-TimeSkip only.
-->'''Siegrain:''' "That certainly ''is'' a {{delayed reaction}}!"
* BareYourMidriff: Thanks to ClothingDamage.
* CrystalBall: Also her WeaponOfChoice.
* NiceShoes
* OneeSama: For Merudy.
* ParentalSubstitute: To Merudy.
* ShowgirlSkirt
* {{Sideboob}}: Because AbsoluteCleavage just isn't enough.
* TookALevelInKindness: Over the TimeSkip.
* VaporWear: Seriously, hasn't anyone[[note]]but Lucy and Cana[[/note]] heard of a bra?
* ZettaiRyouiki: Grade A.

* BareYourMidriff: Thanks to ClothingDamage.
* DarkMagicalGirl: At first.
* EmotionlessGirl: At first.
* FormFittingWardrobe
* GenkiGirl: Post-TimeSkip
* LeotardOfPower: Pre-TimeSkip.
* LittleMissBadass: ''[[{{Badass}} Erza]]'' is hesitant to fight her in when they first meet. [[FridgeHorror Digest that for a moment]].
* MoralityPet: To Ultear.
* PetTheDog: She helps Juvia out after their battle when Juvia faints and later begged Ultear to spare her.
* RapunzelHair: Post-TimeSkip.
* TheStoic: At first.
* ThreePointLanding
* WhenSheSmiles: Noted by Juvia.

----
* ChildhoodFriends: With Erza.
