A victim prince of Atlantis, he is made aware of the surface world problems when fighting an accident who survived with painful cybernetics.underwater drone.

* BodyHorror: Victor's cameo shows him torn in half and having his lower body replaced with alien cybernetics, which from the sounds of it are extremely painful.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Twice in ''Dawn of Justice''. The first instance is easy to miss, if you don't pay attention: Perry assigns the story of a star quarterback's career-ending accident to Clark in the first act, but it's mostly heard in the background; in the second, more memorable instance he's seen being (unsuccessfully) reconstructed by his father, Silas Stone. Luckily, an object that appears to be a [[ComicBook/NewGods Mother Box]] builds the rest of his body.
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: Though thanks to the Mother Box, he doesn't die from this, unlike most examples.
* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent: He was just a normal guy on his school's football team.
* PainfulTransformation: Whatever power the box gave Cyborg certainly made his reconstruction hurt.
* {{Technopath}}: According to his actor Ray Fisher, Vic is one.
* WeCanRebuildHim: What his father is attempting on him in the footage.

A prince of Atlantis, he is made aware of the surface world problems when fighting an underwater drone.
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: Blonde in the comics and most media. Here, it's blonde ''and'' dark brown to accommodate the RaceLift.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: On account of Jason Momoa being mixed race/Polynesian.
* ApparentlyHumanMerfolk: There's very little to visually distinguish him from a human.
* BarbarianHero: Has a savage grit to him.
* BarbarianLonghair: It's long and dark with streaks of yellow.
* BadassBeard: Based on his "barbarian phase" in the comic books.
* CompositeCharacter: Seems to incorporate elements of both the "hook and beard" era of Aquaman, and his New 52 incarnation.
* EarlyBirdCameo: In ''Dawn of Justice''. He's seen on archive footage emerging from a boat wreckage and destroying an underwater drone before propelling himself in the water the same way as Superman takes off in the sky.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: In his first appearance, he's seen taking on an underwater drone. Pretty far cry from his portrayal on ''WesternAnimation/{{Superfriends}}''.
* TheGoodKing: Aquaman is the rightful ruler of Atlantis. He sent whales to save Clark Kent, a total stranger, from drowning in ''Film/ManOfSteel''.
* GoodIsNotSoft: He frequently helps a downtrodden coastal town enough to earn a reputation as kind stranger who brings fish when the tide sets in...and yet is more than willing to throw Bruce into a wall when slighted.
* MadeOfIndestructium: His trident, which was granted to him by [[PhysicalGod Poseidon]].
* MakingASplash: Possesses water manipulation powers.
* MovieSuperheroesWearBlack: It's hard to find any orange chainmail or green slacks on him, [[SubvertedTrope but not impossible]]. His pants have a teal shade and his torso armor is golden.
* ProngsOfPoseidon: His trident, which literally belonged to Poseidon himself.
* RaceLift: Has often been white and blue-eyed in most incarnations.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: Jason Momoa is 6'4.
* TallDarkAndSnarky: Jason Momoa [[WordOfGod said]] that he'll play on his physical imposing appearance into the character.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: In his reveal image. However, a behind-the-scenes look at ''Justice League'' shows that he wears armor around his torso.

The fastest man alive. So fast, in fact, that most people aren't aware that he exists.
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: Blonde in the comics, brunette here.
* BulletCatch: In their first meeting, he catches [[spoiler:a Batarang]] that [[spoiler:Bruce Wayne]] throws at him.
* ChestInsignia: A lightning bolt, though unlike most versions, it isn't contained in a gold and white circle.
* TheCoroner: He works as a CSI.
%%* DisappearedDad: Barry's dad is in jail for "killing" his mom.
%%* EagleEyeDetection: Might be as good as Batman in this regard.
%%*EarlyBirdCameo: He makes two in ''Dawn of Justice''. The first is during Batman's "Knightmare", where he issues a warning. The second is in archive footage showing him stopping a convenience store robbery without anyone else noticing.
%%* FairCop
%%* FingerlessGloves: Barry's costume has these.
%%* FreakLabAccident: He gets his powers when a lightning bolt strikes a tray holding every chemical in the world, soaking him in its contents.
* GeniusBruiser: Before he gained superpowers he was a brilliant CSI.
%%* HealingFactor: He recuperates faster than a normal human does.
%%* IntangibleMan: By vibrating his molecules, he can achieve intangibility for short bursts, allowing him to phase through objects.
%%* TheLabRat: His day job as a CSI.

%%* NiceGuy
* OminousMessageFromTheFuture: In Batman's "Knightmare", he gives the Caped Crusader a mysterious warning.
* OrWasItADream: It's not clear if he's actually traveled back in time or if his presence was a part of the "Knightmare". He visited Bruce ''before'' Bruce downloaded any info on him, and his appearance causes papers to fly around in the Batcave. Barry's history of meddling with time in other media adds more weight to the idea that he was not really part of the dream.
* PermaStubble: In ''Batman v Superman'', he has an unkempt appearance even in full costume. Clean-shaven in ''Justice League''.
%%* PluckyComicRelief
* PrettyBoy: Although when first seen he's a LongHairedPrettyBoy, by ''Justice League'' he's gotten a haircut.
%%* RavenHairIvorySkin: Creator/EzraMiller is known for his really dark hair and pale skin.
* RedIsHeroic: His costume is predominantly red.
* SociallyAwkwardHero: his reason for joining to league? He needs friends.
* SuperSpeed: The most well-known example.
* SuperReflexes: Has accelerated reaction time.
* TwoFirstNames: Per the Creator/DCComics norm.
* YoungerAndHipper: Is a bit younger than some of the other heroes.

* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:She manages to deflect a blast from Doomsday that would have killed Batman.]]
* BloodKnight: She sports a GrinOfAudacity during a fight with [[spoiler:Doomsday]], clearly enjoying fighting something so powerful.
* TheChick: Diana has the strength of a superhero, but at the same time, she's loving, sophisticated, and has a lot of emotional intelligence.
* ClarkKenting: Upon entering Man's World in the 1910s, she disguises herself as an ordinary civilian and adopts the name "Diana Prince", which she keeps to the present day. In ''Batman v Superman'' she presents herself as an antiquities dealer.
* CombatStilettos: Her outfit includes heeled boots.
%%* CoolPlane: One that's invisible.
* CoolSword: A magical one.
* CuteBruiser: She's one of the most attractive females in the universe, but is also one of the strongest heroes alive. [[spoiler: For long portions of the fight against Doomsday, she's the only of the three heroes actively participating, and she survives the fight without a scratch on her.]]
* CynicismCatalyst: Whatever happened in World War I caused her to hang up her sword and shield for nearly an entire century.
* {{Demigod}}: She's the demigoddess daughter of Zeus.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: She has two. As Diana she's able to steal one of Bruce Wayne's gadgets an slip through his fingers, something that [[ComicBook/{{Catwoman}} a master thief has trouble accomplishing]]. As Wonder Woman she makes her entrance rescuing Batman from almost certain death, using her indestructible bracelets and adopting her signature pose.
* FishOutOfWater: In her solo film (where she brandishes ancient weapons in public), but she has long since adjusted by ''Batman v Superman''.
* HumansAreTheRealMonsters: The reason why she retires. She saw what mortal humans were capable of in World War I, and has given up on them... [[HesBack although she relents about a century later]].
* LadyInRed: She was introduced in ''Dawn of Justice'' wearing a sexy but classy red dress.
* LadyLand: The place she's from serves as the TropeCodifier.
* LadyOfWar: Diana has mastered many forms of combat and uses her magical weaponry to great effect, all while having a regal demeanor as Princess of the Amazons.
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCHGhNteXmU "Is She With You"]], meant to symbolize an elegant and regal presence that transforms into power in the right situation.
* LightningBruiser: Being superhumanly strong and lithe, she can employ graceful maneuvers and powerful blows at high-speed.
* LivingLieDetector: She wields a magical lasso that compels anyone bound by it to speak only the absolute truth as well as obey her every command.
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: Has a nice circular shield for battle.
* MadeOfIndestructium: Her silver vambraces can withstand and deflect all manner of high-speed projectiles from bullets to laser beams. Likewise, her shield and lasso also qualify.
%%* ManicPixieDreamGirl: Becomes one to the rascally, cynical Steve Trevor.
* MsFanservice: Her first two appearances have her in revealing evening wear with imaginative decolletage and sporting some AbsoluteCleavage, which are {{Lampshaded}} by Bruce.
* NotQuiteFlight: She can jump very high and far to the point where she practically flies.
* NumberTwo: The first League member recruited by Batman in the aftermath of ''Dawn of Justice'' to help him unite the rest.
* OhNoYouDidnt: In the trailer, she definitely makes a face that communicates this when [[spoiler:Doomsday]] knocks her back.
%%* ProudWarriorRaceGal
* PrimaryColorChampion: Her iconic red and blue suit.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Since she's an [[TheAgeless Amazon]]. She hasn't visibly aged since ''UsefulNotes/WorldWarI'', and there are pictures of her that date even further back. She's actually 5,000 years old.
* RetiredBadass: Wonder Woman has been MIA between the events of her film and ''Batman v Superman'', as Diana has only been "Diana Prince".
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: She's the Princess of Themyscira, and she doesn't hesitate to help humanity again.
* ScreamingWarrior: Belts out battle cries in ''Dawn of Justice'' and her own film.
* SexyBacklessOutfit: Her cocktail dresses in ''Dawn of Justice'' shows her back prominently.
* ShesGotLegs: As part of her standard costume, emphasized by her long boots.
* ShipTease: She and Batman flirt quite a bit. It helps that their actors described their relationship as a sort of BirdsOfAFeather
* StatuesqueStunner: As is always the case. Wonder Woman is very beautiful and clocks in at 5'10" tall.
%%* WeaponizedHeadgear: Diana uses her tiara as a long-range throwing device that can be hurled like a boomerang to stop her opponents at great distances.

->''"Twenty years in [[WretchedHive Gotham]]... how many good guys are left? How many stayed that way?"''

A multi-billionaire businessman by day, and secretly a costumed crime-fighting vigilante by night. After witnessing the murder of his parents as a child, Bruce Wayne vowed to cleanse the streets in Gotham City of corruption and misdeed. Traveling the world to gain the skills he required, he returned to Gotham not as the orphaned young lad he'd once been, but as the Batman.
----
* ActionHero: [[Film/{{Batman}} Previous]] [[Film/TheDarkKnightSaga cinematic]] versions of Batman used quick, complex martial arts techniques. ''This'' Batman rejects them in favor of straightforward assault combine with surprise [[VideoGame/BatmanArkhamAsylum Arkham-style take downs.]]
* AdaptationPersonalityChange: A major difference in that this version of Bruce Wayne has become incredibly jaded and becoming somewhat ProperlyParanoid compared to previous cinematic and animated versions. When Superman and Zod have their skirmish in Metropolis which takes the lives of hundreds of people, including many of Bruce's employees, Bruce becomes a harsher, violent almost entity-like figure on a mission to end Superman. With a new kind of mean in him, Batman starts branding captured criminals with the explicit purpose of marking them for death/violent assault in prison. Even in ''ComicBook/BatmanTheDarkKnightReturns'', Batman never manifested any real desire to kill Superman, merely beat him up. Likewise, other comics had Batman make non-lethal Red-Light based countermeasures. This version of Batman practically ditches his ThouShallNotKill policy where [[spoiler:he actively wishes to kill Superman, ending up to a point where he fashions some Kryptonite into gas grenades and into a spear. He is about to kill Superman when Lois comes and pleads for his life and mentions Superman's mother being held hostage]].
* AdaptationalBadass: In [[ComicBook/BatmanTheDarkKnightReturns one of the major influences]] of ''Batman V Superman'', a not-fully recovered Batman needed the help from Green Arrow to fire a Kryptonite gas arrow and fought a weakened Superman to a draw, the fight ending by [[spoiler: Bruce faking his death.]] In ''[=BvS=]'', a healthy Batman actually manages to defeat a fully-powered Superman on his own, even firing Kryptonite gas grenades himself.
* AdaptationalVillainy: In a typical Batman vs Superman story, Batman always tries to subdue Superman in a non-lethal manner, having no desire to kill him. This version, however, makes it clear that [[spoiler: he has already premeditated to kill Superman during their fight in ''Dawn of Justice''. It's only when Superman mentions Martha does Batman realize who is the [[HeelRealization real villain of the fight]].]]
* AdoptTheDog: In light of the above AdaptationPersonalityChange, his decision to [[spoiler:spare Superman and save Martha Kent]] marks the point where he stops acting like an UnscrupulousHero and becomes fully heroic again. [[spoiler:It also inspires him to unite other metahumans to band together in Superman's absence.]]
* AnimalMotif: Bats, the symbol of one of his childhood fears and a predator of the night.
* AntiHero: [[UnscrupulousHero Type IV.]] Relies on intimidation through the frightening bat-themed mantle and isn't afraid to fight dirty (or of most things). He ranks alongside Creator/MichaelKeaton-Creator/TimBurton in being the most ruthless Batman (willing to kill mooks via collateral damage and [[spoiler:actually intending to ''kill'' Superman]]).
* TheAntiNihilist: In a scene taken directly from ''ComicBook/TheDarkKnightReturns'', he tells Clark that his parents' murder taught him "the world only makes sense when you force it to."
* ArmorIsUseless: {{Averted|Trope}}. The Batsuit can withstand knives and point-blank handgun fire with little issue.
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:At the end of ''Dawn of Justice'', he takes steps to form the Justice League as atonement for misjudging Superman.]]
* BadassBaritone: His cowl is equipped with a voice changer to mask his real voice.
* BadassBoast: "'''Tell me, do [[PhysicalGod you]] bleed? ''You will!'''''"
* BadassCape: Which imitates bat wings. It is apparently fireproof as shown when Batman [[spoiler:saves Martha Kent by making Anatoli Knyazev's flamethrower tank explode]], covering her with the cape.
* BadassNormal: Might just be the [[TropeCodifier most famous example]]. He accomplishes physical and intellectual feats far beyond the capabilities of an average man. [[spoiler:He's even able to survive Doomsday's rampage, providing cover for Superman and Wonder Woman. On top of that, if it weren't for him getting distracted by Superman saying the name "Martha" (referring to Martha Kent, but reminding Bruce of Martha Wayne), he would've '''killed Superman'''.]]
* BatmanGrabsAGun: Literally in his post-apocalyptic nightmare. [[spoiler:He also shoots a flamethrower in order to save Martha Kent's life.]]
* BenevolentBoss: Needless to say, the kind of boss who would drive through a crumbling city in the midst of an AlienInvasion to rescue you is the kind of boss you want to work for.
* TheCameo: In ''Film/SuicideSquad2016'', he gets into a car chase with Joker and Harley Quinn before apprehending them both.
* TheCasanova: ''Dawn of Justice'' shows him flirting with Diana quite a few times and bedding a different woman in one scene. He even admits that getting distracted by pretty women has been a bad habit of his.
* CharacterRerailment: In his debut during the events of ''Batman v Superman'', he's seen at his lowest and having abandoned most of his principles with his needless violence and cruelty. Come ''Justice League'', it's clear he's turned back and become the man and hero he likely used to be, without losing the edge.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Batman displays incredible strength and fighting skill, acquired through grueling training.
* ChestInsignia: A large bat silhouette.
* CrazyPrepared: One of the main reasons why he can take down gods and super-beings. In his fight with Superman, he has littered the battle field with traps for the Man of Steel.
* CreepyGood: The first glimpse of Batman in the movie is via JumpScare and various scenes emphasize how terrifying he is for criminals to fight (and how ''the cops'' are scared of him, too).
* CrimefightingWithCash: As per usual, he makes up for his lack of powers with his immense wealth.
* CoolCar: His Batmobile, of course.
* CoolGarage: The Batcave.
* CoolPlane: The Batplane that Alfred can operate remotely when necessary.
%%* TheCowl: To Clark's Cape.
* CunningLinguist: He speaks Russian briefly, Bruce in his playboy guise states that he picked it up from one of his GirlOfTheWeek but since he's ObfuscatingStupidity, he's underselling his language skills.
* CynicismCatalyst: The Battle of Metropolis made him wary of Superman. In addition, Robin's death is heavily implied to be one of the major reasons he's so jaded and more brutal.
* DaddyIssues: He comments to Alfred about how he's older than his dead dad.
* DarkIsNotEvil: He may be vengeance and the night, but he's also an enforcer of justice through and through.
* DeathGlare: He shoots a look of pure primal rage at the sky after rescuing a little girl from the destruction caused by Superman and Zod's fight.
* DentedIron: It is subtle, yet in his [[ShirtlessScene shirtless]] TrainingMontage, we see he has all the scars someone would expect from a lifetime of fighting.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: His plan to fight a PhysicalGod is to use Kryptonite gas to weaken said God enough to fight on the same level as him. Great plan...until it turns out the effects are temporary. Bruce clearly realizes how screwed he is:
-->'''Bruce:''' [[OhCrap Oh shit!]]
* DepletedPhlebotinumShells: Uses a grenade launcher loaded with Kryptonite gas canisters to fight Superman and [[spoiler:Doomsday]].
* DoesntLikeGuns: Averted. He actually uses guns a few times against Superman, the first being a trap and some handheld grenade launchers that fire Kryptonite gas.
* TheDreaded: Criminals quake just from the sound of his name, and [[spoiler:his murderous intentions even creep Superman out]].
* EgomaniacHunter: In one conversation at Wayne Manor, Bruce and Alfred discuss the Wayne ancestors with Bruce noting that his colonial ancestors traded animal skins and pelts with the French, clearly likening his obsession with Superman.
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: He may not be a bad guy (as he is definitely a case of GoodIsNotNice), but Bruce clearly has a soft spot for his mother. [[spoiler:This is the key factors in stopping him from killing Superman]].
* FantasticRacism: For most of the movie, he calls Superman "an alien" and basically keeps insulting him in their encounters and refuses to even consider his point of view. [[spoiler:It takes the coincidence of both their mothers being named "Martha" and Lois's timely arrival to makes him realize that aliens are people too.]]
* AFatherToHisMen: A non-military variety. After one of his Metropolis-based buildings is destroyed, Bruce rushes in to check on the survivors and provide some words of comfort.
* {{Foil}}: Initially one for Superman. While Superman focuses on saving as many people as possible and only resorts to violence when the need arises, Batman adopts the "scare 'em straight" approach and leaves the rescuing to the police. As a result, Superman is beloved by the masses (though not without his sceptics) while Batman is either feared or remains unknown. Superman will answer for his actions if requested, while Batman either runs or taunts.
* FriendToAllChildren: He embraces a lost little girl in the wreckage during the Battle of Metropolis, and in the tie-in comics helps one kid escape from hostage-taking thieves while still dressed as Bruce Wayne, and in another, when he finds out that a young girl caught a quick shot of him on her camera, goes and just kindly asks her to erase it.
* GadgeteerGenius: He and Alfred built the Batcave by themselves, and he develops and constructs his own devices.
* GeniusBruiser: A staple of the character. He's both a brilliant fighter as well as a GadgeteerGenius, the "World's Greatest Detective" and practically without peer when it comes to [[TheStrategist combat strategy]].
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: Via his PoweredArmor.
* GoodIsNotNice: One of the most violent and aggressive heroes out there and [[spoiler:fully willing to preemptively murder Superman because he sees him as a threat]].
* GrapplingHookPistol: Uses one to reach far distances.
* GreatDetective: Hailed as the "World's Greatest Detective" in the DC Universe.
* GuileHero: What makes him capable of going toe-to-toe with a PhysicalGod.
* GutturalGrowler: His suit and PoweredArmor are equipped with a voice changer to sound more intimidating.
* HeelRealization: [[spoiler:Upon learning that Superman's adoptive mother is named "Martha," he has PTSD remembering the death of his parents, and Lois coming to help Superman reminds him of himself when his parents died. Batman ultimately comes to the conclusion that, in spite of his immense powers, Superman is innocent and killing him would make Batman no better than the murderer who killed his parents]]. This causes the AdoptTheDog CharacterDevelopment described above.
* HeroicBuild: He is built like a heavyweight MMA fighter.
* HeWhoFightsMonsters: Batman's anger against Superman is primary fueled by witnessing the destruction of the Wayne Enterprises building and the countless deaths of his employees still inside, including the mother of a scared girl who Bruce personally comforts in the aftermath. In the next 18 months, however, the anger within slowly consumes Batman as he becomes more and more obsessed with Superman and his god-like power, growing more violent and unreasonable in the process. [[spoiler:When the fight actually comes, Batman is unwilling to listen to Superman's pleas and mercilessly attacks him. After he has Superman at his mercy, Batman mocks how [[WhatMeasureIsANonHuman Superman was never really human]] and prepares to impale him with the Kryptonite spear. It's only when Batman learns that Superman's mother, [[NamesTheSame Martha]], is being held hostage by Luthor's thugs at gunpoint does he realize how close he was to do the very thing he fought against: Harming the innocent.]]
* HiddenDepths: Surprisingly or unsurprisingly, Bruce is a fan of underground MMA fights, though it's part of his usual corporate-hack shtick.
* HighlyVisibleNinja: What does Batman do after placing a tracking device[[note]]A rather big and obviously visible one at that[[/note]] on a transport convoy carrying Kryptonite? He...chases it with his Tank-[=ATV=] hybrid Batmobile and fires military ordinance at it.
* HonestCorporateExecutive: As the CEO of [=WayneTech=], Bruce is a philanthropist who truly wants to save [[WretchedHive Gotham]]. He also gives checks to his employees who were injured during the Superman-Zod fight, and he was there to help.
* HurtingHero: He's in mourning for his deceased sidekick Robin, who was killed by the Joker.
* {{Hypocrite}}:
** Blames Superman for leading the Kryptonians to Earth and destroying half of Metropolis. [[spoiler:Batman led Doomsday to Gotham harbour, casually said that it was abandoned and seemed to just assume that Doomsday wouldn't go any further.]]
** This isn't getting into the fact that he has disturbingly few qualms about killing criminals when he considers doing so appropriate, when he himself only ever became a hero in the first place to get revenge for his parents being killed by a criminal.
* IfYouKillHimYouWillBeJustLikeHim: This version of the character tosses Batman's ThouShaltNotKill policy out the window. ''He does not seem to give a damn about the amorality of his actions and whether or not these make him any better than criminals.''
* IShallTauntYou: Threatens to make ''[[PhysicalGod Superman]]'' bleed. He goes farther by needling Clark about not being a man at all, and even [[JerkAss belittles Superman's Kryptonian parents for making Superman believe he was sent for a reason]].
* JadedWashout: He started out as an idealistic superhero but years of crimefighting, the death of Robin and finally witnessing the destruction Superman caused during Zod's invasion has led him to this end. He frequently dismisses his past accomplishments and career as a crimefighter, lamenting that in the end the old criminals he stopped were just replaced by new criminals, like weeds. For Batman, fighting Superman is a bigger quest and possesses greater meaning than all the supervillains he stopped in his past. [[spoiler:This arrogance comes to bite him hard by the end of the film]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: After two decades of fighting crime, Batman has become cynical and apathetic towards the world. He is also viciously speciesist towards Superman during their fight. His heart of gold only gets to shine in the climax, when [[spoiler:the Trinity works together to beat Doomsday. After Superman's HeroicSacrifice, Bruce is forced to admit he misjudged Superman and vows to form the Justice League in his honor.]]
* KickTheSonOfABitch:
** The "Bat-Brand" is far more brutal than anything Batman typically does to criminals (and it's a fairly recent punishment within the context of ''Dawn Of Justice''), but it's reserved for the absolute worst of the worst. The only two individuals that bear the mark are a serial rapist and a human trafficker. [[spoiler:Luthor nearly gets one, too.]]
** In the extended edition of ''Dawn of Justice'', Batman had [[spoiler: Luthor being transferred to [[BedlamHouse Arkham Asylum]] after it became clear that Luthor is invoking the InsanityDefense to avoid facing trial for his crimes.]]
* KnightTemplar: Has shades of it in his rigid belief that Superman is a potential enemy.
* LanternJawOfJustice: Par the norm, even his Batsuits leave open a window to the manly perfection it is.
* LargeAndInCharge: One of the reasons Ben Affleck was cast is because he's taller than Henry Cavill. Add the HeroicBuild and armor, and Batman is as physically imposing as possible, even next to Superman!
* TheLeader: Mastermind type. After [[spoiler:Superman's death]] he feels the need to put the League together.
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JThPsJvEDg "Men Are Still Good"]] is meant to be everything the Superman theme is not.
* LightningBruiser: For a [[BadassNormal simple human]] at least, he is impossibly strong and agile, able to toss grown men like ragdolls. This is ''despite'' the fact that he's roughly a decade older than most traditional portrayals of the character.
* MommasBoy: So hung up on his own mother's murder that [[spoiler: he uses rescuing Martha Kent as a way to save Martha Wayne]].
* MoralMyopia: At one point he says that killing Superman will be "the most important thing I'll ever do". Alfred takes offense and points out that he saved many people in Gotham from criminals over the last twenty years, but Batman dismisses it saying that anytime he stops crime, newer criminals take their place, whereas [[RoseTintedNarrative saving the world from an alien conqueror]] will be a definite victory, for himself and the human race.
* NervesOfSteel: Batman is as brave as they come. It's the reason he's able to leap off buildings and battle crazed supervillains every night.
** Played with a little bit in his interactions with Superman. He puts up an amazingly tough front against someone who could kill him with a light slap, but the signs of fear are still clearly present when they're face to face.
** [[spoiler:The final fight with Doomsday has his body-language visibly quaking in seeing Wonder Woman and Superman fighting the monster, clearly out of his league and barely escaping eye-beams]].
* NeverHurtAnInnocent: His moral code more closely follows this than a standard ThouShallNotKill belief system, as he doesn't seem to be concerned with saving criminals from collateral damage like explosions.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: As part of the whole rich playboy persona. His first reaction on meeting Clark is to wonder aloud if he owns the Daily Planet or if that's "the other guy".
* OhCrap: He actually says "Oh, '''shit'''!" upon seeing [[spoiler:Doomsday shooting his eye beam at him.]] Does so again but more expressive than verbal as he sees Doomsday charging at him and dodges by a hair's width at the very last second.
* OlderAndWiser: He's been in the crime-fighting game for a while now, and has a considerable amount of experience to show for it.
* OneManArmy: It's expected, [[spoiler: but in order to save Martha he annihilates something like ''two dozen'' of Luthor's thugs with frightening ease.]]
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: The typically non-lethal Batman is out to ''kill'' Superman.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: ''Batman'', of all people, gets hit with this in climax of ''Batman v Superman''. When [[spoiler:Doomsday]] shows up, both Superman and Wonder Woman give ''excellent'' displays of their power and skill against [[spoiler:him]], and even if they can't take [[spoiler:him]] on they still make it clear that they're ''trying''. Batman, though, is basically powerless against [[spoiler:him]] and spends the fight...running away (quite literally; the most he can do is duck when he gets shot at and leap away from attacks, then towards the end fires a single grenade at [[spoiler:him]]). It's noticeable because a few minutes before that, he got an impressive scene showing him ''destroying'' Lex's hired goons, and he won the fight with Superman (though only because Superman was only trying to disarm Batman while Batman was giving it his all), but against [[spoiler:Doomsday]] he looks pathetic.
* ParentalAbandonment: His parents were murdered when he was very young.
* PermaStubble: Sports this in ''Batman v Superman'', but appears to be clean-shaven in ''Justice League''
* PoweredArmor: Makes him formidable enough to go ''mano a mano'' with the Man of Steel himself.
* ProperlyParanoid: Averted. He ''claims'' to be this regarding Superman, but Alfred sees right through it and says Bruce is only displacing his anger at his inability of saving Gotham onto Superman. [[spoiler:This attitude comes back to bite him in the behind in the climax.]]
* RageBreakingPoint: In ''Dawn of Justice'', he is bottling up some anger issues, which are most apparently seen when he first announces his intent to destroy Superman to Alfred.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: While Bats is aware of the good that Superman does, he wonders if he'll "stay that way".[[spoiler: Subverted in the movie, as he believes it's all an act and goes ahead and fashions a Kryptonite Spear and fully intends to kill him, likening his chase to a hunt]].
* RestoredMyFaithInHumanity: In an unusual manner, Superman did this during the Zod Invasion. Batman had become bitter and disillusioned about fighting crime over 20 years but suddenly seeing a new alien threat (in his eyes) makes him believe that he's the only one who can potentially save the world from Superman. He even tells Alfred that he considers it his most important act in life. By the end [[spoiler:he transfers this to the Justice League so as to protect the world from Darkseid and honor Superman]].
* ScienceHero: He relies largely on technology and his intellect to make up for his lack of superpowers.
* SecretKeeper: Judging by his conversation with Clark Kent, it's implied that he actually found out that he was Superman before they even met.
* SharpDressedMan: Being a rich and influential businessman, Bruce has a lot of snappy suits to fit the image.
* ShipTease: He and Wonder Women flirt quite a bit, it helps there actors described there relationship as BirdsOfAFeather.
* ShootTheDog: [[spoiler:He actively kills Anatoli Knyazev in order to save Martha Kent. All the other criminals that died in their fights with him die indirectly.]]
* ShootingSuperman: [[spoiler:When BatmanGrabsAGun, he stationed them in four turrets just to do it for him.]]
* SkunkStripe: Bruce's hair has grey bands at the temples.
* SlasherSmile: Gives Superman one right before the big fight.
* SociopathicHero: He gives off this vibe in the middle part of his movie, where his obsession with taking down Superman creeps Alfred out. At one point, Batman likens himself to his hunter ancestors and sees himself as HuntingTheMostDangerousGame. It's implied that part of the reason he wants to take on Superman is the ego-stroking in taking down a Kryptonian superbeing. Likewise, [[spoiler:where Batman in the comics doesn't ''expect'' or ''intend'' to kill Superman, this one fully intends to do it]].
* TallDarkAndHandsome: Comes with the package when you're being played by Creator/BenAffleck (6'4).
* TallDarkAndSnarky: Given, since Batman is known for being a DeadpanSnarker.
* TerrorHero: The most brutal Batman ever put to film in that perspective. He scares criminals beyond measure and doesn't pull his punches. This is shown when he shackles a thug to a wall, takes his shirt, and brands the bat symbol into his chest. A cop who sees him for the first time nearly shoots him point-blank because he's that scared of him.
* ThouShaltNotKill: Decidedly not the case for Superman, [[spoiler:who he was inches from killing. Batman also has no qualms about icing Doomsday]]. As for common criminals, he doesn't actively try to kill them, but he simply doesn't have any qualms about using lethal force if the situation calls for it. Zack Snyder himself likened Batman's policy to the difference between manslaughter and murder. As for Superman [[spoiler:and Doomsday]], however, WhatMeasureIsANonHuman is in full effect.
* ThroughTheEyesOfMadness: [[spoiler: Hearing Superman say "save Martha" , made Batman flashback to the death of his mother, Martha. Worth noting is that his grip on reality wasn't very strong and he'd earlier had a nightmare about a bat-monster bursting from his mother's grave, so it wouldn't be beyond him to believe that his mother might still be alive.]]
* TookALevelInIdealism: After learning to understand Superman, Batman comes to the conclusion that in spite of every tragedy he's been through, people are still good. [[spoiler:This inspires him to team up with Wonder Woman to found the Justice League in Superman's absence.]]
* TranquilFury: Seems to be his default state of mind as Batman, although it lapses into UnstoppableRage when fighting Superman.
* TwoFirstNames: Per the Creator/DCComics norm.
* UnwittingPawn: To Lex Luthor, [[spoiler:who came closer than anyone in making Batman kill an innocent. Batman is supremely angry at Luthor for this]].
* UtilityBelt: Never leaves the Batcave without it.
* WeaponizedCar: The Batmobile, naturally. The DC Extended Universe iteration of the car makes it closer in design to to the earlier film versions, while retaining some of the Tumbler's "tank" aspects.
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: He doesn't have any objections toward trying to kill Superman, [[spoiler:and even fewer regarding Doomsday, who he discovers is an '''actual''' threat to humanity]].

A child of Krypton sent to Earth as a baby to escape the destruction of his homeworld. He is the biological son of Jor-El and Lara, the first naturally-born Kryptonian in centuries, and was adopted and raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent.
----
* ActionHero: While [[Film/SupermanTheMovie previous]] [[Series/{{Smallville}} live-action]] [[Film/SupermanReturns versions]] of Superman were not lacking in the action department, they mostly used their powers to save people and prevent disasters. ''This'' Superman finally gets to show how powerful he can be in a straight-up fight against characters of equal strength.
* AdaptationalAngstUpgrade: Oh boy, yes. From having a much less happy backstory to being generally ostracized instead of adored by the public, this Superman is much less of a cheerful boy scout than other versions.
* AdaptationPersonalityChange: Is a lot more serious and brooding than his comic incarnation.
* {{Adorkable}}: He has his moments, such as after his kiss with Lois.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: He was bullied a lot while growing up because his SuperSenses tended to leave him freaking out and made him the "weird kid."
* AmbiguousDisorder: [[PlayingWithATrope Played with]]. As a child, his first understanding of his abilities [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything comes across as a case of sensory overload]] (a symptom commonly associated with disorders on the [[UsefulNotes/HighFunctioningAutism autism]] [[UsefulNotes/AspergerSyndrome spectrum]], among others). However, he quickly learns that what he's experiencing is happening to him because he's an alien, not because he has a neurological or mental disorder.
* BadassArmfold: He calmly folds his arms while telling General Swanwick that he will not allow the military to learn his {{secret identity}}.
* BadassBaritone: As Superman, he can make his voice incredibly deep.
* BadassBeard: Sports one during the first quarter of ''Man of Steel'', when he saves an entire crew from a burning oil rig.
* BadassCape: So badass that, like the ''ComicBook/{{New 52}}'' version, the cape seems to be even ''more'' resistant than Superman himself. While he gets bruised and wounded during battles against Zod's army, the cape is unscathed.
* BadassInDistress: After entering Zod's ship, he gets weakened by the ship's atmosphere and taken prisoner. He escapes with the help of Lois and Jor-El, then saves Lois from crashing on Earth in a failing escape pod.
* BatmanCanBreatheInSpace: Superman has no problem flying to space, and staying there for long periods of time while not needing to breathe at all.
* BeardOfSorrow: The usually clean-shaven Clark grows a beard during his years WalkingTheEarth seeking his purpose in life, before becoming Superman. Arguably, [[BadassBeard he looks better with it]].
* BeneathTheMask: As Superman, he seems to really take to playing the aloof-but-benevolent alien diplomat, being very confident and flawlessly composed. Beneath it, as we've seen, he's wracked with indecision and can come off as awkward from restraining himself so much.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He's an extremely nice guy, but pissing him off isn't a good idea, as seen by the bullying trucker and [[RelativeButton Zod threatening his mother]].
* BigDamnHeroes: As is the norm, Superman gets several moments.
* BigGood: Jor-El told him that his destiny was to become this for humanity, and he works hard to reach this point in both ''Man of Steel'' and ''Dawn of Justice''. [[spoiler:Even while he's "dead," his example still inspires Batman and the rest of the Justice League.]]
* BlessedWithSuck: Growing up in an alien environment, he underwent a painful adaptation process that involved spending years being unable to control the stimuli his senses were exposed to. He could see every layer of everything at all times and he could hear everything all together to the point of having a flip-out and running away from class to hide in a closet. It was paralleled with sensory over-stimulation and reactions of children with autism. Martha eventually coached him in tuning out the excess.
%%* TheCape: To Batman's [[TheCowl Cowl]].
* CarpetOfVirility: Seen during his WalkingTheEarth time.
* ChestInsignia: A big red "S," which is the crest of his Kryptonian family and a symbol representing hope on Krypton.
* ChickMagnet: Thanks to his SamaritanSyndrome, women tend to see Clark as more of a "guardian angel" than a threat. His handsome features are definitely a plus, as well.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Clark can never leave well enough alone, even though it goes against his adoptive father's wishes for prudence. The only time he doesn't jump in is when [[spoiler:a tornado engulfs Jonathan]], and even then it was only because Jonathan insisted he stand down, despite the consequences for both of them.
* CivvieSpandex: His suit seems to be some sort of Kryptonian formal wear, either a scout uniform or, considering the ceremonial cape, some kind of diplomatic dress. The "S" symbol is the House of El crest standing for "hope." He wears it unaltered throughout ''Man of Steel''.
* ClarkKenting: Par for the course in the Superman mythos, being the TropeNamer. Clark is shown disguising himself with nothing but a pair of glasses, as he joins the crew at the ''Daily Planet'' in the conclusion to ''Man of Steel''.
** ''Dawn of Justice'' [[JustifiedTrope makes this more convincing]] by showing Clark with a different posture and demeanor (that of an aggressive, somewhat brash IntrepidReporter to contrast with Superman's GentleGiant kindness), and having him wearing loose-fitting clothing to hide his HeroicBuild.
* ClassicalAntiHero: Probably the fundamental difference between ''Film/ManOfSteel'' and previous ones starring the character is that Superman isn't an IdealHero yet, being more of this instead. From a young age, Clark has to deal with insecurity about being accepted by the world in spite of his powers. Despite this, he has a [[SamaritanSyndrome sense of duty]] to [[ComesGreatResponsibility use his powers for good]] so, as an adult, he's unable to settle down in a civilian job for long, since he skips town whenever his cover is blown. This ends when he becomes Superman and finally gets a job at the ''Daily Planet''. Earlier, this leads Clark into an "[[Franchise/SpiderMan Uncle Ben]]" situation: [[spoiler:Pa Kent dies to protect his secret and [[MyGreatestFailure he blames himself for not saving him]]]].
* ComicBookMoviesDontUseCodenames: In ''Film/ManOfSteel'', he is only called "Superman" by a few soldiers. By the time of ''Dawn of Justice'', it appears that more people have taken to referring to him by name.
* DeadpanSnarker: He is nothing if not a pleasant man, but his very straightforward and rather blunt approach to things give him an edge in this.
-->'''Dr. Hamilton''': Hello, sir, my name is--\\
'''Superman''': Dr. Emil Hamilton. I know. [[XRayVision I can see your ID tag in your breast pocket]]. Along with a half-eaten roll of [[ProductPlacement wintergreen Life Savers]].
** He also has a refined wit, such as when he interacts with [[HotScoop Lois Lane]].
--->'''Lois''': [[SuperStrength You]] let them handcuff you?\\
'''Superman''': Wouldn't be much of a surrender if I resisted.
* DestructiveSavior: In ''Man of Steel''. Though he's fighting to protect humanity, his battles with Zod's soldiers and later Zod himself cause ''lots'' of damage to nearby buildings.[[note]][[NeverLiveItDown Although it's often overstated by viewers]] - aside from crashing through an empty gas station, punching a Kryptonian into a stationary train, breaking a few windows and glass panes, melting a steel beam, and damaging a satellite when fighting Zod, he is responsible for little of the property damage in the climactic battle of ''Man of Steel'', and exponentially less than what Zod and the other Kryptonians inflicted.[[/note]] As of ''Dawn of Justice'', he's more careful about what gets damaged in combat.
* {{Determinator}}: No matter how much Kryptonite his enemies may have, Superman will never back down. He demonstrates a lot of HeroicResolve [[spoiler:while under the debilitating effects of Kryptonite poisoning, both during his battle with Batman and the subsequent battle with Doomsday]].
* DisneyDeath:
** In ''Man of Steel'', he loses consciousness and seems to be dead after destroying the World Engine. Thankfully, [[CueTheSun the Sun kicks in]].
** [[spoiler:In ''Dawn of Justice'', he has TWO of them, both in the span of minutes of each other. One is when he gets nuked whilst fighting Doomsday in space. Naturally, [[CueTheSun the Sun came out]]. The second time is when he has a near-death experience with Doomsday that leads most people to believe that he's dead. However, his heart starts beating after his funeral ends, revealing that he is, in fact, alive.]]
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: The first thing he's shown doing is saving the crew of a burning oil rig.
* ExtremityExtremist: Whenever he fights in ''Man of Steel'', Superman almost exclusively uses his fists. {{Justified|Trope}} in that he hadn't learned the full extent of his powers.
* HeroicBSOD: In ''Dawn of Justice'', the [[spoiler:Senate bombing and his inability to stop it]] hits him hard.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: [[spoiler:When Batman is about to kill him, he doesn't beg for his life at all, but simply requests that Batman save Martha Kent. It ends up saving him.]]
* FakeAmerican: InUniverse, being an alien and all. He even invoked this at the end, stating that "I'm about as American as it can get."
* FarmBoy: Raised on a farm in Kansas.
* FishOutOfWater: The main conflict of ''Man of Steel'', as Clark's abilities alienate him from society.
** ''Dawn of Justice'' takes it even further, as people either hate or revere him, but do not treat him as an equal.
* FlyingBrick: TropeCodifier.
* {{Foil}}: To Zod, another surviving member of Krypton with designs on being the messiah of their lost civilization. However, whereas Zod is a ruthless elitist, Kal-El is compassionate and altruistic. In this manner, Kal embodies all the hopes and aspirations of Krypton's people for a better future while Zod personifies the authoritarianism and Social Darwinism that drove Krypton to ruin in the first place.
* ForcedToWatch: [[spoiler:During a tornado, Jonathan refused help from Clark in order for his adopted son to hide his abilities from the people there.]] Cue ManlyTears.
* GeniusBruiser: Closer to his comics counterpart, this Clark is established as being quite intelligent, knowing how to treat wounds, maintaining a high degree of control over his powers, being a pretty good tactician, and being knowledgeable about science and a fan of the classical Greek philosophers. He may have been the first "genetic roll of the dice" in Kryptonian civilization in centuries, but those "dice" (Jor-El and Lara) were loaded towards intellectualism to begin with. Also, like in the comics, he eventually chooses a civilian career where his powers give him no special advantage over anyone else (well, typing at super-speed ''does'' help with the deadlines).
** ''Dawn of Justice'' shows him learning from his previous fights, as he immediately moves [[spoiler:the battle with Doomsday into Earth's orbit, which not only allows him to minimize property damage, but receive support from a nuclear missile]].
* AGodIAmNot: He is very uncomfortable with the thought of people revering him as, or even comparing him to, a god in any way.
* GodzillaThreshold: With a ThouShallNotKill code in full effect, he uses lethal force only as an absolute last resort against an opponent who is simply too dangerous for him to hold back against. His killing of Zod is actually what '''inspired''' said code in the first place. [[spoiler:And, true to form, Zod's reanimated corpse (Doomsday) is what causes him to cross this threshold once again.]]
* GoodIsNotSoft: He levels devastating blows on villains (who are a match for him, so it's give-and-take). As Superman, he does not visibly hold back at any point, which is usually a major facet in his combat ability.
* GoodPeopleHaveGoodSex: Implied when he slips into the bathtub with Lois.
* HappilyAdopted: As usual. Clark may be an alien, but he and his adopted parents are closer than blood. Flashbacks make the relationship more nuanced; he went through a phase of rejecting Martha and Jonathan as just the people who found him. Though he seems to have gotten over it for the most part, he does refer to Jor-El as his father pretty consistently, which hits Martha pretty hard.
* TheHero: A staple of the character. Of all the ''DCEU'' protagonists introduced so far, Superman is the best example of the standard heroic archetype.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: A number of anti-Superman protesters exist two years after the Battle of Metropolis.
* HeroesLoveDogs: He shares many affectionate moments with his dog.
* HeroesWantRedheads: Because Lois is [[AdaptationDyeJob a redhead in this adaptation]].
* HeroicBuild: {{Justified|Trope}}. Spending years and years WalkingTheEarth and working in all kinds of jobs that require great physical effort tend to do that to you. Plus, having a body that "drinks the sun" helps.
* HeroicBystander: What Clark was before he discovered his heritage: His ChronicHeroSyndrome was clashing with his adoptive father Jonathan's admonishments that the world was not ready for someone like him.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:In ''Dawn of Justice'', he kills Doomsday with the Kryptonite lance, which weakens him and allows him to die from an impalement wound of his own. But luckily, he gets better.]]
* HeroicSpirit: He's Superman, this is a given. Whether it's preventing a disaster or punching out supervillains, Superman doesn't stop fighting until people are safe.
* HiddenDepths: He displays some medical and scientific knowledge in ''Man of Steel'', which is unexpected considering the amount of time he spent as a vagabond. He's also seen reading philosophy texts as a kid.
* HopeBringer: He tells Lois that the "S" on his chest is the Kryptonian symbol for "hope." Thus, Kryptonians would see someone with this crest flying towards them as "hope is coming."
* HotScoop: Applies for the ''Daily Planet'' at the end of his inaugural movie.
* HowDoIShotWeb: He took years honing his natural gifts (with a lot of help from his adoptive parents) and even destroyed a mountain on his first attempt at flight.
* {{Hunk}}: Handsome, check. Manly, check. Jawline, check. Big arms, check. Large torso, check. Pronounced muscles, check. Body hair, check. There's no doubt that this version of Superman is a ''perfect'' example of Hunk.
* HurtingHero:
** While Superman has oftentimes been shown lifting a globe (the ''Daily Planet'''s), this is one version that shows how much just ''feeling'' one has to [[SamaritanSyndrome bear the weight of the world on one's shoulders]] [[IronWoobie can do to a guy with Superman's powers]]. Even before he finds the suit, just because he's a good person at heart.
** ''Dawn of Justice'' takes this further--while he's much closer to becoming the IdealHero he wants to be, he is scarred by what happened in Metropolis and is emotionally-damaged by the {{ungrateful|Bastard}} masses who are skeptical of him after all he's done.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Clark's reaction after finding out he's a super-powered alien. As an adult, [[WalkingTheEarth he moves from place to place]] trying to live a quiet life. But both as a child and an adult, [[SamaritanSyndrome he's compelled to be]] a HeroicBystander until he finally becomes Superman.
* IdealHero: He spends the entirety of ''Man of Steel'' striving to become this. By the time of ''Dawn of Justice'', he apparently fits the mold considerably better, but still isn't quite there. He is said to finally fully become this in ''Justice League''.
* IfIWantedYouDead: Almost completely paraphrased in his second confrontation with Batman. Superman's goal in the battle is simply to get Batman to stop fighting, and he has no interest in seeing him die (likely because of ThouShallNotKill principles).
-->'''Superman''': Stay down! If I wanted it, you'd be dead already!
* IllBoy: Martha mentions that it was hard for him to breathe as a child. Explained to be because Krypton's atmosphere is near, but not quite, Earth composition, and he needed to adjust. It also supports the KryptoniteFactor.
* InnocentBlueEyes: Of the heroic and idealistic variety.
* IntrepidReporter: As Clark Kent, he assertively and effectively looks for scoops.
* InterspeciesRomance: With the human Lois Lane (and presumably Lana Lang in his teens, assuming this follows the comics).
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler:When he stabs Doomsday through the chest with the Kryptonite lance, Doomsday returns the favor, impaling him on one of his SpikesOfVillainy]].
* LastOfHisKind: The only survivor of Krypton...until the reveal that Zod and his minions survived. And then they all die or get banished again.
* {{Leitmotif}}: Originally presented as "An Ideal of Hope," the full version of this theme appears in ''Man of Steel'' as "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFr3ih6Xu_8 What Are You Going To Do When You're Not Saving The World]]." A simple piano medley that crescendos into a full orchestra with marching drums in the background, symbolizing his purity, power, and patriotism. The motif gets a DarkReprise in ''Dawn of Justice'' as [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2O3Q98uUjlE "Day of the Dead"]] as Superman is still struggling to do the right thing despite the burden of heavy criticism from the media in an increasingly morally-gray world.
* LightningBruiser: He's not as brutally fast as Faora, but holds his own quite well against her and Nam-Ek since he has the advantage of superior strength and flight. And in the climactic battle with Zod, he flies fast and hits ''hard''.
** In ''Dawn of Justice'', he is able to stand toe-to-toe with [[TheJuggernaut Doomsday]] and even overpower him on occasion through his strength and speed.
* LivingMacGuffin: [[spoiler:Prior to launching Kal-El to Earth, Jor-El imbued his cells with the Codex, which holds the genetic potential of the entire Kryptonian species]].
* ManlyTears: Twice. First with the death of his adopted father, then his TearsOfRemorse [[spoiler:for killing Zod]].
** For the third time [[spoiler:after the Senate bombing]].
* MommasBoy: He cares very much about his mother, so attacking her when he's around probably won't end well for you.
* MrFanservice: A certified {{Hunk}} with at least one ShirtlessScene to show it off. {{Lampshade}}d when Captain Carrie Farris of the Air Force is completely DistractedByTheSexy when near him (and ''admits'' it to her commanding officer, General Swanwick).
* MyGreatestFailure: He feels guilty to some degree for the destruction that occurred in Metropolis, [[ReconstructedTrope but he is also keeping said guilt in mind as a way to make sure that nothing so drastic ever occurs again on his watch]].
* NiceGuy: Despite being met with hostility from all sides, he's [[BewareTheNiceOnes almost]] never less than courteous and helpful. At one point, he saves one of the soldiers that had been firing on him as well as on Zod's troops, and as he puts him down, he asks him sincerely and without any rancor if he's alright; this seems to dumbfound the soldier.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: After saving his fellow students from a bus accident, most of them, as well as their parents, acted like {{Ungrateful Bastard}}s and essentially labeled him a "freak."
* NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler:As revealed in the last shot of ''Dawn of Justice'', he's healing, albeit very slowly.]]
* NotSoStoic: It all goes out of the window when lives are in danger. He spent an entire lifetime holding his anger in, and then Zod threatened his mom...
* OneManArmy: {{Downplayed|Trope}}; though individually, he ''is'' much more effective against Zod's army than the human Armed Forces, he wouldn't stand any chance of stopping it by himself, without their involvement.
* TheParagon: Surprisingly, not quite. He has more than potential for it in him, that much is for sure, and both of his fathers understood this. However, throughout ''Man of Steel'', he's mostly trying to discover what direction to take his powers in, settling on being the alien mediator and representative. So while Jor-El tells him to be "an ideal to strive towards," he is not his usual IdealHero self yet. (He also doesn't have the benefit of [[ExpositionBeam 12 years' training through]] NeuralImplanting that Jor-El's avatar subjected him to in ''Film/SupermanTheMovie''. In this movie, he spends the corresponding amount of time doing odd jobs.)
* ParentalAbandonment: His biological parents died shortly after his birth and his adoptive father made a HeroicSacrifice to save their dog when he was in his late teens.
* PatrioticFervor: "I grew up in Kansas, General. I'm about as American as it ''gets''."
* PowerFloats: A very rare example of floating ''horizontally'' rather than vertically in the final battle against Zod.
* PrimaryColorChampion: In ''Man Of Steel'', it's [[MovieSuperheroesWearBlack a visually-darker example]], but still counts. In ''Dawn of Justice'', the colors on his costume are brighter.
* PunchCatch : He does it to '''Doomsday''', proceeding to overpower him via twisting his arm (albeit with two hands to counter for Doomsday's much greater mass).
* RavenHairIvorySkin: A TallDarkAndHandsome man who has a very pale skin, making him a RareMaleExample of this trope [[note]] Supes complexion in the comics varies DependingOnTheArtist. On the other hand, Cavill is the third live-action Superman with similar pale complexion after the late Creator/ChristopherReeve and Creator/BrandonRouth.[[/note]].
* SamaritanSyndrome: As a boy, he saves his classmates from drowning. As an adult WalkingTheEarth, this is what enables Lois to track him down. Lois's obsession even stems from Clark using his powers to save her when she was investigating an alien crash site. She notes that to completely disappear, Clark would have to stop helping people, and that's not an option for him.
* SaveTheVillain: [[spoiler:When Doomsday awakens, he attempts to attack Lex, ''his own creator''. Superman [[CrowningMomentOfAwesome has to intercept the blow and save him]] from almost certainly getting splattered.]]
* ScreamingWarrior: Whenever Superman is in a fight, especially after said opponent, be it man or machine, threatens his planet, he seems to scream a lot. Such as when he drags Zod through downtown Smallville for threatening his mother and when [[spoiler:he destroys part of the World Engine]]. He also lets out a scream of anger when fighting Batman and [[spoiler:Doomsday]] in ''Dawn of Justice''.
* SelfMadeOrphan: Invoked by Zod [[spoiler:when they're the only two living Kryptonians left after the rest got sent back to the Phantom Zone, as Superman destroys the last working ship (his, actually) that could have been used to breed new Kryptonians. Its Genesis Chamber is empty, though, as it needs Superman's DNA to work]]. Of course, Superman himself makes it perfectly clear that [[spoiler:his people went down their self-destructive path of their own free will]], and he doesn't want a repeat of that.
-->'''Superman''': [[spoiler:'''''KRYPTON HAD ITS CHANCE!''''']]
** Also [[spoiler:Zod himself is killed by Superman shortly after]].
* ShirtlessScene: He's had a few to show off Cavill's impressive physique. [[CarpetOfVirility And hairy chest]].
* ShootTheDog: [[spoiler:Killing Zod to save an innocent family.]] He's visibly upset that it had to come to that. So much, even, that [[spoiler:it may have caused him to adopt his familiar ThouShaltNotKill code]].
* TheStoic: Superman takes pains to control his emotions, mindful of accidentally killing people and/or exposing his powers.
* {{Superhero}}: TropeCodifier, TropeNamer and the [[Pantheon/{{Heroes}} God of Superheroes]].
* SuperheroesWearCapes: TropeCodifier.
* SuperpowerLottery: The undisputed king of the trope.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: As with all depictions of Superman (Cavill is 6'1").
* ThouShaltNotKill:
** [[spoiler:Though he always avoided killing at all costs, it's finding no other way to save a family but killing Zod that pushes Superman ''firmly'' into this rule. He ''knows'' what it feels like to take a life, all that comes with it, and that is what makes him decide, once and for all, not to do it.]]
** His fight with Batman shows this, [[spoiler:despite considering Batman to be a psychopath and warning him from returning, and knowing that his mother's life is on the line in exchange for Batman's, he is reluctant to use destructive force on Batman, even if the latter is actively trying to kill him. In other words, he's playing down his self-preservation skills to stick to his code]].
* TookALevelInIdealism: Being obliged by circumstances to kill the last of his Kryptonian brethren only results in him adopting a ThouShaltNotKill code and becoming more idealistic and [[TheFettered fettered]].
* TranquilFury: In ''Dawn Of Justice'', he keeps his composure while being thoroughly pissed at Batman. At the worst of times, he comes across like a stern parent scolding a child.
* TwoFirstNames: Per the Creator/DCComics norm.
* UnskilledButStrong: Played with. He's only unskilled in that he isn't a trained warrior compared to the ''very well-trained'' elite Kryptonian soldiers he has to face off with for his ''first'' real outing. Note, for the brief time they were on Earth, Zod manages to overcome his PowerIncontinence and need for a breather apparatus, and Faora manages to outright ''master'' SuperSpeed on second contact. All of which took Clark much longer to hone, and even then, he's never had a chance to test himself to the limits. However, since he has been exposed to the yellow sun for 33 years, he was able to match them on raw power, but it became a problem when Zod caught up. It's also shown in the fight scenes that his style of hand-to-hand combat, while understandably not on par with the soldiers, is still more advanced than other onscreen portrayals of the character, where he often relies solely on his devastating power rather than technique.
** Is further seen in ''Batman v. Superman''. [[spoiler: Superman is a better fighter than he was in the previous movie, but when his strength is brought down to normal he is no match at all for Batman's twenty+ years of fighting experience, training and skill. Although he's not so much brought down to normal as reduced to a state of debilitating pain. And once he recovers, he goes toe to toe with the ''humongous'', equally strong and much more powerful Doomsday.]]
* WhenHeSmiles: Given all the trauma he goes through, it's nice to see him when he's happy. Hell, just watch him when he achieves flight for the first time. He's like a kid in a candy store.
* WouldHitAGirl: Only because he is forced to defend his adopted homeworld against a fanatical band of Kryptonian [[SuperSoldiers super-soldiers]] whose ranks happen to include women that are just as skilled and deadly as their male counterparts.

In the DCEU, Clark Kent is in his early 30s and just started his career as Superman, Bruce Wayne is in his mid-40s and had a 20+ year career as Batman, Diana of Themyscira is thousands of years old and took part in UsefulNotes/WorldWarI, Barry Allen is in his early 20s and hadn't donned the Flash costume yet in ''Batman V Superman'', and if Jason Momoa's age is anything to go by, Arthur Curry is nearing 40.
