A Shaymin hailing from Sinnoh's Flower Paradise, and the first character introduced in the story. Serena is a very gentle, easygoing, and somewhat sensitive Pokemon who constantly worries about the well-being of those around her - especially that of her best friend, Piper, and any children who wind up in her care. Despite previously having lived a rather sedentary life, however, she is shown several times to have a strong sense of adventure, as well some particularly keen problem-solving skills. Although technically genderless, both Piper and Serena are referred to as female in the narration and by other characters.

* ActionGirl: When the time calls for it, she's more than willing to leap into the fray whenever someone's life is on the line.
* AllLovingHero: In her normal state, she looks out for and genuinely cares about everyone around her; she doesn't even seem to hate [[EvilTwin Kareena]] despite the latter's attacks on her and her friends, and only fights her out of self-defense.

Piper is very shy and extremely timid, but also kindhearted towards those who are fortunate enough to earn her trust. Prior to the start of their adventure, she lived with Serena underneath a large tree on Sinnoh's Flower Paradise. In the aftermath of their home being destroyed, however, she has since taken to wandering the world with her best friend.

A very gentle, if not slightly mischievous Zorua - and later, Zoroark - who is also Vladimir's closest friend. She's mostly passive and seems to enjoy just taking it easy whenever she and her friends aren't actively traveling. But when the time comes, she certainly doesn't mind getting her hands a little dirty to fight off whatever evils may be threatening those around her.

* ApologeticAttacker: [[spoiler: After she maims Twilight's face and nearly gouges one of her eyes out without actually meaning to, she feels horrible about doing so, silently apologizes to her, and immediately backs down from their fight.]]
* BewareTheNiceOnes: As Twilight discovers the hard way, Bella isn't easy prey to take down in a scrap. Not only does she manage to KO her evil twin, who has a type advantage over her, but is not above shifting into MamaBear mode whenever her friends (and especially the resident Zorua pair, Midnite and Lily) are threatened... and it isn't pretty.
* BerserkButton: Vladimir's experimental pills. When he pulls one out in front of her after she's been cured of the first one's effects from the beginning of the story, she uncharacteristically grabs it from him and chucks it far away before storming off.
* TeamMom: Especially towards the younger members of the group.
* ThoseTwoGuys: With Mystic. After discovering Neo aboard a cruise ship, they upgrade to being ThreeAmigos
* VagueAge: Bella's exact age bracket is blurry, though she acts like a young child up until she evolves into a Zoroark. However, while Vlad grew significantly in the time gap between their separation and eventual reunion, Bella doesn't seem to have changed a bit.

A peculiar Snivy with a partial Psychic-typing, stated to be an ex-affiliate of Team Plasma's as well as a lab experiment of some kind. She masquerades as a Garchomp (under the alias "Tsume") by traveling inside of a mechanical suit of armor made into the likeness of one - and not exactly for heroic reasons. During one such spree an unidentified number of years ago, she apparently ran into Vladimir and kicked off some bad blood between the two of them. Nowadays, however, she lives a much more honest and carefree life on board Morgana's airship cruiser with the rest of the cast, which she takes turns co-piloting with Nazuzu.

* BigEater: She can be seen stuffing her face quite often, and eats an awful lot for someone of her size. She isn't too picky, either, given how she scarfs down a helping of mystery meat just as eagerly as she would a berry.
* BrilliantButLazy: She's as smart as can be, but certainly capitalizes on the "lazy" bit.
* DeadpanSnarker: Almost anything that comes out of her mouth is guaranteed to be tinged with sarcasm.
* GadgeteerGenius: She manages the upkeep of her stolen robot Garchomp all on her own. Later on, she even becomes a co-pilot of Morgana's airship after Nazuzu teaches her the basics, and sometimes helps Tiktok and Klawkwerk with technical maintenance.
* Irony: Joins in referring to Vladimir as "the plant" despite belonging to the same evolutionary line as him.
* TheManBehindTheCurtain: A non-villainous example. Because of the way she uses her Garchomp mech, it comes as quite a surprise to the other travelers later on when it's revealed that she is, in fact, nothing more than a Snivy.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Despite her sardonic and sometimes bitter tendencies, she genuinely does care about her traveling companions.
* ShipTease: With Nazuzu.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Bluk berries and anything made from them - usually juice, as a stand-in for a cup of morning coffee.

Initially met on a cruise ship as an abandoned, nameless, and hapless Deino, Neo is a pacifistic young Hydreigon who was carefully raised by Bella and Mystic over the course of the story.

* ADogNamedDog: Before evolving into a Hydreigon, he was simply referred to as "Deino" and "Zweilous".
* DarkIsNotEvil: He's one of the nicest characters in the story despite belonging to a species with a terrifying reputation, most likely as a result of Bella's friendship rubbing off on him.
* MeaningfulRename: "Neo" means "new", of course. Fittingly for someone who had previously been blind for the entirety of his life, and as such, is still new to the sights of the world around him, as well as adjusting to his new life. The name is given a double meaning in subsequent adaptations of ''Cross Region Adventure'' or other works that he appears in, as he is also reimagined as a shiny Deino/Zweilous/Hydreigon.
* ParentalAbandonment: Or ''trainer'' abandonment in his case. When Mystic discovers a Dusk Ball while snooping around for food on a cruise ship, she finds a young Neo inside and immediately wonders how he was left all alone.
* GentleGiant: Under normal circumstances, he is tame and wouldn't hurt a fly.

An offputting Frillish who is (according to him, anyhow) the prince of an undersea kingdom. Piper and Serena are first introduced to him when his native Jellicent swarm shipwrecks a cruiser that they had been hitching a ride on, possibly killing all of the other passengers, and he develops a bit of an obsession with the two after dragging them off to his lair while they're both unconscious, where he successfully turns them both into amphibious creatures. He later integrates into the main group - ironically enough - aboard another ship after the two Shaymin escape from his clutches. When he discovers the magic of transformation, he uses it to take on the form of a Drifblim, and eventually, a Chandelure.

* BewareTheSillyOnes: He is ''definitely'' pretty silly, and difficult to take seriously later on in the story. But this is still the same 'Mon who, like Vladimir, has made what may as well be a scientific breakthrough in the biology field in just his introductory scene alone. And when he does get serious on the battlefield, he's certainly nothing to play with.
* CargoShip: With the transformation stone that winds up in his grasp a little ways into him joining up with the main crew.

A lone Gallade that the main crew picks up at a dock on their way to Unova. He has a penchant for attracting ladies, but none of them really tickle his fancy... until he meets a certain Lucario.

* ChickMagnet: Quite a few female Pokemon are enchanted by his looks, though this falls more into CursedWithAwesome from his perspective.
* RetGone / ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: In supplementary ''Cross Region Adventure'' material and later adaptations, he's simply removed from the story and never mentioned again by any of the other returning characters.
* UnresolvedSexualTension: With Rikki, who never gets a chance to confess her feelings to him.

An irritable Serperior monarch with an "empire" located in the deepest reaches of Sinnoh's Mt. Coronet. He winds up dragged into the story when his knack for pharmaceutical science leads him to create a batch of pills, one of which he successfully tests on his childhood friend and unwilling lab rat, Bella. (WIP)

* AccidentalMurder: [[spoiler: During one scene on board a ship, Flash tumbles over the railing of the deck and into the sea, where she starts to drown. Vladimir tries to get Shiver on rescue duty by tossing him in after her, but to the express horror of everyone else on the deck, the unlucky Dewott gets caught up in the ship's propellers and is puréed before their eyes. Naturally, the loss of her closest friend at his hands shakes some of Rikki's loyalty to him for the remainder of the story.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: The main reason he starts out the way he does.
* DefrostingIceKing: He does grow to be a little nicer to his companions as time goes on. Though of course, he still acts grouchy to save face.
* EmbarrassingNickname: Bella still calls him "Leafy" out of habit. He is not exactly keen on it, but allows it when coming from her.
* EvilBrit: Described as having a British edge to his voice in a few Meta discussions.
* HeelFaceTurn: He starts out as one of the story's main antagonists, but slowly turns over a new leaf[[note]](no pun intended)[[/note]] after becoming FireForgedFriends with a few of the heroes.
* MagnificentBastard
* MoralityPet: For him, Bella. She's the ultimate reason he even gets swept up into the other Mons' adventure in the first place, and seems to be the only person who's able to bring out his soft side for some time before he opens up a bit more to the rest of the crew. Mizu also becomes one to him, if his borderline fatherly interactions with the Vaporeon are anything to go by.
* NotMeThisTime: Gamil-Sin wages war on Vladimir after accusing him of being the one who invaded and destroyed his home village in the past. And while Vlad ''has'' been known to terrorize areas around his kingdom (with one his opening scenes even being an attack on Floaroma Town with his minions), he insists that he had done no such thing. [[spoiler: It later turns out that he really was telling the truth; the actual perpetrator in Gamil-Sin's background was another Serperior posing as Vladimir, and he had unknowingly been framed the entire time. Once Gamil-Sin realizes this, he and Vlad become allies instead.]]
* TheSmartGuy: He is shown to be rather intelligent from the get-go, with his personal quarters in Mt. Coronet being more closely akin to a lab or a study hall. Though his dabbling in science is never elaborated on or explored further.
* TokenEvilTeammate: To the others, before his HeelFaceTurn comes into effect.
* WickedCultured: Perhaps to be expected, being a Serperior and all.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Despite his high status, he is stated to be 21 during the events of the story. Somewhat justified, since he came into power as a ruler at a relatively young age.

* LikeBrotherAndSister: Certainly implied to be the case between him and Rikki, who is shown in flashbacks to have known Shiver since they were both young children. Making it all the more understandable that she privately takes his death very hard.
* OnlySaneMan: Among Vladimir's mooks he shares this role with Rikki, though Shiver is arguably the most level-headed of the two by a small margin.
* PunchClockVillain: As seen when he's strung along for the Time Flute journey, Shiver is a peaceful creature outside of his obligation to follow Vlad's orders. The moments where he's temporarily away from his boss reveals him to be a downright NiceGuy, with a shining example in his interactions with Princess Xylacia.

* TheGhost: His wife, quite literally since she's a Frillish herself. He offhandedly mentions her a few times, but she's never physically seen or heard from. Nero is still openly [[TheDreaded terrified of her, however.]]

! Shadow Doppelgangers

* EvilDoppelganger: All of them are dark counterparts of the characters from the main group; most of them either being polar opposites in the personality department, or extreme capitalizations on their "good" twin's negative traits.
* KillAndReplace: Some of them have this intention. Others are simply in it ForTheEvulz, or reasons of their own.
* ThePsychoRangers: As detailed under EvilDoppelganger. Not only that, but every last one of the Shadows also has an unnatural elemental advantage (i.e. Kareena and Ember are a ''Fire-type'' Shaymin/Excadrill) against the member of the main group that they're imitating, which makes them formidable opponents during the airship raid.

A tyrannical Fire-type Shaymin, serving as the Shadow counterpart to Serena and the leader of the syndicate. Kareena is a heartless shell bent on making the lives of her enemies as miserable as possible, with the ultimate goal being to eradicate each and every one of them so that she can create more Shadows to take their place.

* CombatSadomasochist: To Serena's horror, Kareena ''lives'' for being cut up and bruised in battle, as well as in general. She'll even inflict self-harm just for the sensation of it, or when she's lost in thought in her own quarters.
* FourLegsGoodTwoLegsBetter: She's very prone to walking on her hind legs in her Sky Forme, which Serena has also been guilty of a few times.
* KillAndReplace: One of her primary goals.

* WouldHurtAChild: During a Shadow raid on Morgana's airship, she beats Rururii - a young Azurill - and tries to murder him on the spot when his terrified wailing begins to annoy her. Thankfully for him, Lunari interrupts just in time.

Nevertheless, when she's called upon by Kareena, she's capable of wreaking all kinds of havoc on the main crew by tampering with the technology on board their airship. Her tech skills appear to rival - and possibly even surpass - Mystic's.

* BrattyHalfPint: Lunari is terribly lazy and spoiled, and a borderline MilesGloriosus on the battlefield who isn't above using dirty tricks or picking on the weak to save her own skin. She isn't afraid of nitpicking at her fellow Shadows from the backseat, much to their annoyance, and yet...
* BunnyEarsLawyer: She happens to be an incredibly gifted mechanic, which is one of the only reasons the others keep her around in the first place.
* GadgeteerGenius: Though given who she's based off of, that comes as no surprise.
* TheStoic: She is one of the less emotive Shadows, tending to react passively to the goings-on around her, or with DissonantSerenity at best.
* VillainousGlutton: Noted to be just as greedy as Mystic herself.

Bella's Shadow doppelganger. Twilight is, in direct contrast to her kind-hearted counterpart, extremely vicious, cynical, hateful and nasty. Keeping in theme with the trend of the Shadows each having type advantages over the main cast, she's a Fighting-type Zoroark with a couple of shady moves up her sleeve.

Kareena is a heartless shell bent on making the lives of her enemies as miserable as possible, with the ultimate goal being to eradicate each and every one of them so that she can create more Shadows to take their place.

* CombatSadomasochist: To Serena's horror, Kareena ''lives'' for being cut up and bruised in battle, as well as in general. She'll even inflict self-harm just for the sensation of it, or when she's lost in thought in her own quarters.

* SealedEvilInACan: It's implied that her very existence is closely intertwined with the mysterious, chipped red orb that she keeps in her personal quarters.

Nevertheless, when she's called upon by Kareena, she's capable of wreaking all kinds of havoc on the main crew by tampering with the technology on board their airship. Her tech skills appear to rival - and possibly even surpass - Mystic's.

* BrattyHalfPint: Lunari is terribly lazy and spoiled, and a borderline MilesGloriosus on the battlefield who isn't above using dirty tricks or picking on the weak to save her own skin. She isn't afraid of nitpicking at her fellow Shadows from the backseat, much to their annoyance, and yet...
* BunnyEarsLawyer: She happens to be an incredibly gifted mechanic, which is one of the only reasons the others keep her around in the first place.
* GadgeteerGenius: Though given who she's based off of, that comes as no surprise.
* TheStoic: She is one of the less emotive Shadows, tending to react passively to the goings-on around her, or with DissonantSerenity at best.
* VillainousGlutton: Noted to be just as greedy as Mystic herself.

Bella's Shadow doppelganger. Twilight is, in direct contrast to her kind-hearted counterpart, extremely vicious, cynical, hateful and nasty. Keeping in theme with the trend of the Shadows each having type advantages over the main cast, she's a Fighting-type Zoroark with a couple of shady moves up her sleeve.

* AllLoveIsUnrequited: In contrast to Neo's feelings for Bella, it's Twilight who harbors a crush on Nephoros. Unfortunately for her, the latter doesn't seem to notice.

An aristocratic Serperior who is introduced into the story as the hardened, yet somewhat chivalrous ruler of a Pokemon organization deep within the bowels of Sinnoh's Mt. Coronet. He is hinted to be something of a researcher, and if the descriptors of his personal study are to be believed, routinely uses his own minions as guinea pigs for unpleasant experiments whenever they aren't out doing field work for him. No one truly seems to know why and how he became the leader in the first place. But most of his subjects are afraid of him (or more appropriately, his wrath) and rarely ever question his orders due to fear of punishment. Despite ''seeming'' intimidating on the outside, however... [[HiddenDepths deep down,]] Vladimir is later revealed to be little more than a romanticist with a broken heart, and an ever-changing view of life.

* DarkAndTroubledPast: One of the main reasons why he starts out so cruel and snide.

* HeelFaceTurn: He starts out as one of the story's main antagonists, but later turns over something of a new leaf (no pun intended) after becoming FireForgedFriends with a few of the heroes.

* MoralityPet: For him, Bella. She's the ultimate reason he even gets swept up into the other Mons' adventure in the first place, and seems to be the only person who's able to bring out his soft side for some time before he eventually opens up a bit more to the rest of the crew.
* NotMeThisTime: Gamil-Sin initially wages war on Vladimir after accusing him of being the one who invaded and destroyed his home village in the past. And while he ''has'' been known to ransack areas around his kingdom (with one his opening scenes even being an attack on Floaroma Town with his minions), he insists that he had done no such thing. [[spoiler: It later turns out that he really was telling the truth; the actual perpetrator in Gamil-Sin's background was another Serperior posing as Vladimir, and he had unknowingly been framed the entire time. Once Gamil-Sin realizes this, he and Vlad become permanent allies for the rest of the tale.]]
* TheSmartGuy: He is shown to be rather intelligent from the get-go, with his personal quarters in Mt. Coronet being more closely akin to a lab or a study hall. After joining the other Pokemon on their adventures, he offers up his own ideas and advice rather often.

* YoungerThanTheyLook: Despite his high status, he comments that he's only 21 during the events of the story. Somewhat justified, since he came into power as a ruler at a relatively young age.

* BewareTheNiceOnes: As Twilight discovers the hard way, Bella isn't easy prey to take down in a scrap. Not only does she manage to KO her evil twin, who has a type advantage over her, but is most definitely prone to shifting into MamaBear mode whenever her friends are threatened... and it isn't pretty.

A peculiar Snivy with a partial Psychic-typing, stated to be an ex-affiliate of Team Plasma's as well as a lab experiment of some kind. She often masquerades as a Garchomp by traveling inside of a mechanical suit of armor made into the likeness of one.

* DeadpanSnarker: Almost anything that comes out of her mouth is guaranteed to be tinged with smarminess.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Despite her smarmy and sometimes bitter tendencies, she genuinely does care about her friends and is just as hurt as everyone else is when [[spoiler: she wakes up to find several of her friends either dead or injured after Darius attacks them.]]

A Shaymin who, due to past experimentation by human scientists, is perpetually always in her Sky Forme. Piper is very shy and extremely timid, but also kind-hearted towards those who are fortunate enough to earn her trust. Prior to the start of their adventure, she lived with Serena underneath a large tree on Sinnoh's Flower Paradise.

A very gentle, if not slightly mischievous Zorua - and later, Zoroark - who is also Vladimir's closest friend, She's mostly passive and seems to enjoy just taking it easy whenever she and her friends aren't actively traveling. But when the time comes, she certainly doesn't mind getting her hands a little dirty to fight off whatever evils may be threatening those around her.

* BewareTheNiceOnes: As Twilight discovers the hard way, Bella isn't easy prey to take down in a skirmish. Not only does she manage to KO hher evil twin, who has a type advantage over her, but is most definitely prone to shifting into MamaBear mode whenever her friends are tthreatened... and it isn't pretty.

* TheGhost: His wife, quite literally under the presumption that she's a Frillish, as well. He offhandedly mentions her a few times, and although she's never physically seen or heard from even, Nero is openly [[TheDreaded terrified of her.]]
