34 years after his victory against Johnny Lawrence, Daniel's life couldn't be better, but the return of his hated rival and the dojo that made him threaten to upset Daniel's balanced life.

A young high schooler who lives with his mother and grandmother, Miguel meets his neighbor Johnny Lawrence and ends up becoming the first and star student at the newly reopened Cobra Kai.

* CombatPragmatist: Johnny trains him in karate to embrace this, on the fairly strong logic that neither life nor most street fights are fair. Miguel ends up getting good enough at this philosophy to defeat the entire bully gang at his school.
** We then see the dark side of this, as Miguel is fully willing to use dirty tricks and unsportsmanlike ruthlessness to defeat Robby in the tournament, and in spite of Johnny's discouragement of such things, leading to him ironically being more personally ruthless than even Johnny was when he was young.
* NiceGuy: At first, Miguel is one of the most polite and kindhearted characters in the show. This is one of the reasons why Sam [=LaRusso=] ends up dating him. But then...
* ProtagonistJourneyToVillain: Miguel's on a pretty standard heroic journey in the first half of the first season, one that resembles Daniel's, in fact. But once he successfully defeats his school bullies, he gradually begins to step into their vacated spot, and eventually his changes in attitude and philosophies lead to him losing Sam as a girlfriend and violently beating Johnny's son Robby with dirty tactics during the tournament.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Miguel winds up succumbing to the same kind of insecurities and aggression that made Johnny become a bully when he was a kid, following in his footsteps.

Daniel's daughter, Sam is dealing with the drama of high school and her new clique, eventually finding out how quickly people can turn on you when her new boyfriend starts a smear campaign against her.

* ActionGirl: She was trained by Daniel at a young age, and quickly and efficiently handles a handsy Kyler.

* PoorJudgeOfCharacter: She should have seen Yasmine and Kyler's flaws a mile away. Luckily, she learns and quickly notices when Miguel starts to change.

A victim of the lowest kinds of cyberbullying at her high school, Aisha is Sam's oldest friend, and decides to fight back against her tormentors, becoming Johnny's second student.

* ActionGirl: Aisha was already somewhat physically capable even before training, and she quickly takes to Cobra Kai training.
* TheDogBitesBack: Aisha is the target for Yasmine's bullying, and she ends up getting some pretty powerful revenge, hijacking her beach party with a preemptive party of her own, and inflicting a painful looking front wedgie on her.
* [[LikeFatherLikeSon Like Father Like Daughter]]: Her father's a powerful professional football player, and Aisha takes after him in terms of her size and strength.

Johnny's estranged son, Robby initially seeks employment under Daniel as a form of revenge towards his father out of jealousy for Johnny and Miguel's burgeoning paternal friendship. However, GoodFeelsGood is in effect, and Robby ends up ironically becoming Daniel's student in Miyagi-do karate.

* AntagonisticOffspring: Initially. Has some aggression and anger towards his dad, but fortunately, Daniel manages to impart enough forgiveness onto him that Johnny can accept his father's apology after Miguel beats him with dirty fighting in the tournament.
* BecomingTheMask: Robby only seeks to work for Daniel simply to spite his dad, but eventually grew to enjoy working under him.
* GoodFeelsGood: He finds that Daniel is a BenevolentBoss and responds very well to his lessons and encouragement, leading to him turning on his criminal colleagues and eventually becoming the newest student of Miyagi-Do karate.
* HiddenDepths: After initially seeming like a chip off the old block and like an archetypal "bad kid," we see Robby is quite capable of being charming, clever, and that he's far from stupid when he cons a man into handing over his computer and password while masquerading as a computer store worker.
* TheRival: To Miguel.
* TookALevelInKindness: Almost in exact paralell to Miguel slowly succumbing to the flaws of Cobra Kai philosophy, Robby starts to turn to the positive aspects of Miyagi-Do karate.

Yet another victim of bullying at Sam and Miguel's school thanks to a notable scar left over from surgery to remove a cleft pallate, Eli takes Johnny's advice to change his entire look, dawning a Mohawk and tattoos to become "Hawk."

* GenerationXerox: Ends up becoming one to Dutch from Johnny's childhood, even unknowingly imitating his attempt to flirt with girls by throwing stuff at them in a movie theater.
* TestosteronePoisoining: "Hawk" ultimately embraces just about every piece of Johnny's advice, almost becoming a parody of manliness that's both hilarious to see and disheartening to watch go astray.

Kreese even returns to congratulate him on such an accomplishment.
* MyGodWhatHaveIBecome: Johnny slowly starts to go through this during the tournament, seeing his students repeat his mistakes when he was under Kreese's tutelage, and even at one point sadly stares at a picture of Kreese, realizing their parallels.
