* {{Foil}}: To more regular coroner Lanie. Both are skilled professionals but where Lanie is naturally personable and gets on well with the detectives and Castle Perlmutter is grumpy and generally irritated by other characters (particularly Castle).

* BewareTheSillyOnes: Usually, he's pretty offbeat, laid back, and generally irreverent, but when his friends, kids, or innocents are threatened, he turns into a pretty terrifying badass.

* BrainyBrunette: Is portrayed as a serious, professional and highly intellectual person who can trade literary references with Castle and legalese with lawyers; justified by her being in pre-law before her mother's murder. Her hair changes to Stana Katic's blonde from Season 3 onward.

* UnclePennybags: This has been downplayed but in earlier seasons he was happy to use his money and connections to help move a case along. It also appeared in other ways:

* MysteryWriterDetective: The premise of the series is Castle, a mystery writer, shadowing an NYPD homicide detective and eventually helping her solve mysteries. Later series have often had the detectives introduce Castle as a "consultant" suggesting he's been formally retained by the department.

* NiceGuy: Once you scratch away the Playboy ManChild exterior, Castle is friendly and loyal through and through. He loves his mother and tolerates her quirks, giving her a place to live after her last partner robbed her blind, and is an extremely devoted father and clearly did something right there in order for Alexis to be such a remarkable young woman. He earns the loyalty of everyone at the 12th within a few weeks and even Iron Gates [[DefrostingIceQueen eventually warms up to him.]]

* MinoredInAsskicking: Castle, being a civilian, usually leaves the dirty work to his detective friends. But we ''are'' occasionally reminded that he is as good a shot as Beckett.
* MommasBoy: Raised solely by his single mother, and it shows in, among other things, his complete lack of knowledge about baseball. However, he's not the typical whipped baby, but a well rounded man who loves his mother... and happens to still live with her because her last partner stole all her money and left her destitute and Castle gave her a place to live.

* GoodParents: Whatever Castle's various personality flaws he adores his daughter and generally serves as a very fine father to her even with little to no help from her mother.

* HiddenDepths: He's usually a loving father who loves playing with his daughter and indulging her whenever possible, but it's occasionally shown that he's more than willing to lay down the law when it comes to enforcing discipline. Luckily, Alexis is usually well-behaved so he doesn't have to do it too often.

* CommitmentIssues: A [[DownplayedTrope downplayed]] example. He's not exactly afraid of committing to a romantic partner so much as actually admitting that is what he's doing, remaining faithful and loyal but ducking serious conversations about relationships. Meredith and Gina both note this as an issue in their failed marriages at different points in the show and it gets in the way of his relationship with Beckett until he manages to get past it.

* TheAllegedBoss: Of his PI business - Alexis and Hayley effectively hijack it from him treating him like an intern.

* HeroesWantRedheads: Played with in that quite a few of the women in Castle's lives are redheads, including his first ex-wife, his mother, and his daughter, but the succession of love interests he's had since are not. Kyra Blaine, Ellie Monroe and of course Beckett are all brunettes, while his second ex-wife Gina is a blonde.
** In order to play this up, Beckett's hair in the first season was ''seriously'' washed with red. Super auburn. In the second season, they let her go back to her natural coloring.

* GutturalGrowler: Not angry enough for a growl, but Hal has a smokey quality to his voice.
