!!Arno Victor Dorian

-->'''Voiced By:''' Dan Jeannotte

->''"The Creed of the Assassin Brotherhood teaches us that nothing is forbidden to us. Once, I thought that meant we were free to do as we would. To pursue our ideals, no matter the cost. I understand now. Not a grant of permission. The Creed is a warning."''

The main protagonist of the Animus portion of the game, an Assassin of both French and Austrian descent. He joined the Brotherhood in 1789, the year the Revolution began.
----
* AnimalMotifs: Arno is old German for "Eagle's Strength" continuing the usual theme for {{Player Character}}s like Altaïr, Ezio, and Haytham, a notable return after Connor's wolf theme and Edward Kenway's non-theme variation.
* TheAtoner: According to promotional material, he joins the Brotherhood after he causes the accidental death of one of his parents.
* AuraVision: Has a short-lasting variant of Eagle Vision known as Eagle Pulse that allows him to tag foes like how Edward's Eagle Vision worked in ''Black Flag'', which can be upgraded to function more similarly to that of Ezio's Eagle Vision.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Though you don't have to do them as a player, the optional objectives for his missions show him meticulously scanning the city for an easy way to his targets. See GuileHero for an excellent example.
* BackToBackBadasses: With Elise in the SDCC trailer.
* BadassLongcoat: Similar to Connor's outfit -- which makes sense, when you consider that both games take place in the late 18th Century.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: Wields two Hidden Blades that also come with a ballistic knife attachment known as the Phantom Blade.
* BrokenStreak: The first player character in the main console series not to be an ancestor of Desmond Miles.
* ClassyCravat: As opposed to the red sashes of earlier Assassin protagonists and his fellow Assassin teammates, Arno wears a red cravat in his default outfit.
* ConflictingLoyalties: Not only is he in love with a Templar, his Order's sworn enemy, he was unknowingly raised by the French Templar Grandmaster before he was murdered. [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Since the latter is the former's father,]] it's got an [[TheParagonAlwaysRebels interesting twist.]]
* CulturedBadass: Is very well educated due to his noble upbringing.
* TheCharmer: Is described as very charismatic.
* DatingCatwoman: Elise, his romantic interest, happens to be a Templar.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Has a rather prominent scar on his nose.
* GuileHero: Make no mistake, he can kick your ass in a fight, but he can come up with some pretty sneaky ways to take you down. Take the place of a confessor to kill the man confessing to him, simultaneously taking out his target and gathering information? Oh yeah.
* FrameUp: He's framed for the death of his adopted father, Templar Grandmaster, François de la Serre and gets sent to the Bastille, where he meets Marquis de Sade and Pierre Bellec before escaping on 14 July, 1789.
* IconicItem: Has a pocket watch in his possession that according to Alex Amancio will be very important. It belonged to his father.
* InTheHood: Like most Assassins Arno wears a hood most of the time.
* LeParkour: Is an excellent freerunner, climbing through Paris like how Connor traversed forests.
* MoreDakka: Wields a multi-shot pistol that allows him to shoot several people at once without reloading.
* NotInThisForYourRevolution: Despite being French, he doesn't care for the political debates and partisan politics of the Revolution, leaving that to Mirabeau and others to handle.
* OddFriendship: Forms a bond with Elise, a Templar. She was his best friend as a child and his first love as well.
* SeeingThroughAnothersEyes: The third variant of Eagle Vision in Arno's possession, Communal Sense, allows his teammates to see what he sees within a limited range.
* SinisterScimitar: His pose in his character trailer shows him stretching a French cutlass aloft, in true swashbuckler fashion.
* StealthExpert: Is good at all forms of stealth.
* SwordAndGun: The requisite combination for any Assassin since Ezio is still present here.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: Was a thoroughly adorable little boy as can be seen in the trailer.

[[folder: Pierre Bellec]]
!!Pierre Bellec
-->'''Voiced By:''' Mark Bonnar

A former soldier who served in the French army during the Seven Years War, Bellec is a passionate, almost fanatical, Assassin. During the French Revolution, he had sympathies with the Jacobins.

* {{Badass}}: He's a career soldier and a Master Assassin. [[spoiler:And he gives Arno a beast of a fight]].
* ConspicuouslyPublicAssassination: He very seriously recommends this to Arno. Telling him that if he can't find a stealthy approach, there is great honour in sacrificing himself for the Assassin cause. Arno looks at him as if he's grown another head:
-->'''Arno:''' [[SarcasmMode You mean a dagger in broad daylight as I'm cut down where I stand]].
-->'''Pierre Bellec:''' [[InspirationalMartyr Sends a powerful message.]]
* {{Foil}}: [[spoiler:To Germain, who turned and betrayed his Grand Master, he wants to take the Assassin into the light of a better future, and sees himself following in the footsteps of Altair, Ezio and Connor]].
* RebelliousRebel: Is quite critical of Mirabeau's truce with the Templars. [[spoiler: Later invokes this trope as his defense for killing Mirabeau with poison]].
* ReplacementGoldfish: [[spoiler:Arno on killing him realizes that he was this for Pierre. He was good friends with Charles and saw Arno as following in his footsteps]].

* TheRevolutionWillNotBeVilified: He's a firm Jacobin partisan and believes that the Assassin cause is just, described to be a fanatic. [[spoiler:In the game proper, he believes that any peace with the Templars is folly and goes as far as to kill his Mentor, Mirabeau, to achieve his aims]].
* ViolenceIsTheOnlyOption: His view of the Templar-Assassin conflict.

* HistoricalHeroUpgrade: He's shown as a great pragmatist and a voice of reason in the Assassin Council and is shown to be the BigGood for the French Revolution. His real-life chicanery with the King, corruption and naked political ambition is not looked at much. Some historians do believe that had Mirabeau lived, France could have avoided the ReignOfTerror, others, usually critics, believe, that had he lived, he would be one of its first victims for his political corruption.
* {{Hypocrite}}: While criticizing the Royal Family in the Assembly, he also managed to get his debts paid by the Crown.
* KavorkaMan: His bio in Project Widow makes note of his considerable sexual appetite, for which he was constantly imprisoned, sometimes by his father.

* SurroundedByIdiots: How he feels about France at the time of the Revolution, a stupid King who doesn't understand the mess he's in and a bunch of politicians arguing no better than a village council. The real Mirabeau also believed himself to be the same at the time of his death.

[[quoteright:300:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/assassins_creed_unity_elise_1406641575_1004.jpg]]

The daughter of François and Julie de la Serre, Élise is a young noblewoman and rising Templar who is determined to secure her place in the Templar dynasty amidst the chaos of the French Revolution, and ends up forging an unlikely bond with her childhood friend Arno.
----
* BackToBackBadasses: With Arno in a few missions.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: She and Arno were childhood sweethearts. Her father was the same Templar Grand Master who adopted Arno. They grew up as best friends and eventually fell in love. They in fact had a SecretRomance that they had to hide from her father since Arno wasn't really of the same class as Elise and a romance between them was taboo in the Ancien Regime.
* DarkActionGirl: According to WordOfGod, she's a better swordswoman than Arno, but also decidedly differently moral in her actions.
* DatingCatwoman: Has a romantic interest in Arno, who's an Assassin. [[spoiler:Pierre Bellec immediately cottons on and tries to kill her, until Arno stops him in time]].
* FieryRedhead: Is described as "The Fiery Templar Elise.," and she's at her most fiery when trying to investigate her father's death.

* OddFriendship: Forms one with Arno, an Assassin.
* PassionateSportsgirl: Horsemanship and Fencing are others.
* {{Revenge}}: Her motivation is to find out who killed her father and for what cause.
--> '''Élise''': If you don't have the stomach for revenge then I don't need your help.
* StarCrossedLovers: How she sees her relationship with Arno.
* SwordAndGun: Her artwork has her wielding both a sword and a pistol in each hand.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: The game shows brief glimpses of the childhood of Arno and Elise. She and Arno make an adorable pair.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: François de la Serre]]
!!François de la Serre

The Templar Grand-Master before the Revolution and the father of Élise. He also fostered Arno after his parents' death.
----
* AristocratsAreEvil: How the rebel Templar faction see him, especially le Roi des Thunes.
* FriendlyEnemy: To Arno's Assassin father, he respected him so much that he fostered the orphaned Arno under his care and ''without'' indoctrinating him into the Templar vision. Comte de Mirabeau, the leader of the French Assassins, also respected him and regrets his passing.
* GoodParents: To both Arno and Elise.
* PlotTriggeringDeath: His death leads to Arno being framed and sent to the Bastille where he meets Pierre Bellec and gets involved with the Assassins. It also leads to a coup with the more bourgeois Templars instigating a revolution and it ends up threatening the brief Assassins-Templar truce.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Had a more benign approach to Templar goals than other Grand Masters. He and Mirabeau were both genuinely looking to form a truce and unity to steer the Revolution towards a constitutional monarchy.

* HistoricalDomainCharacter: The highly obscure Germain was the Royal Silversmith, who in the 1760s broke with other guilds to earn profits by collaborating with independent financiers. He died in 1791.
* HistoricalVillainUpgrade: It's unlikely the real Germain was anything more than the highly talented jewel designer that he was.
* InterfaceSpoiler: [[spoiler:After the Phoenix Project intro that plays at the end of Prologue, we get a short glimpse of the memory Arno is looking for. He sees Germain's face with a Templar Cross and Bishop tells him that the guy is a Sage. Players from ''Black Flag'' on our first glimpse can immediately pick up to his real nature as the Sage.]]

* {{Confessional}}: He uses his connections to secure a private meeting with a fellow conspirator at a Confessional, [[spoiler:only to get stabbed by Arno in return]].

[[folder: Maximilien Robespierre]]
!!UsefulNotes/MaximilienRobespierre
--> '''Voiced by:''' Bruce Dinsmore
[[quoteright:300:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maximilien_de_robespierre_acu_4506.jpg]]

One of the major leaders of the French Revolution, and a member of the Templar Order.
----
* ArtisticLicenseHistory:
** The game's portrayal of Robespierre is quite unusual needless to say. It's derived from [[http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/12/20/robespierre-death-mask-makeover-diagnosis-photo_n_4481018.html a recent reconstruction]] of his features based on his death mask by Madame Tussaud and faulty diagnosis of the state of his health. Said reconstruction is regarded as dubious and poorly researched because Tussaud's death mask of Robespierre is not considered authentic, since she was first and foremost a show-woman, and the circumstances of Robespierre's death made casting a mask a questionable event, as Antoine de Baecque and [=Peter McPhee=] point out. The mask is also missing the famous jaw injury that disfigured his face at the time of his death.
** When Danton passes by the tumbrel and shouts at Robespierre, he's shown to be standing on the street looking coolly. Not only would this kind of semi-gloating be completely uncharacteristic of Robespierre (he never attended executions) but he was at that time inside his house when Danton passed by.
* HistoricalBeautyUpdate: Averted. This is by far the ugliest version of Robespierre yet based on a rather dubious 3D reconstruction. Most earlier portrayals even villainous, while showing him being older, (he was 35 at the time of his death) at least tended to emphasize the fact that he was a flamboyantly dressed well-kept dandy, who even sported green-tinted glasses for most of his public appearances. In addition this version of the character is missing the fact that the real-life figure had really bright sea-green/blue eyes.
* HistoricalDomainCharacter: He's far and away the most notorious and controversial figure in the French Revolution.
* PetTheDog: Eseosa's Codex in ''Initiates'' mentions that [[TruthInTelevision under Robespierre's authority]], France officially abolished slavery, the first major democracy to do this by an act of law in the year 1794.
* RealMenWearPink: Just like the real-guy, he wears colourful clothes.

* ArtisticLicenseHistory:

One of the major leaders of the French Revolution, and a member of the Templar Order.
----
* ArtisticLicenseHistory:

One of the major leaders of the French Revolution, and a member of the Templar Order.
----
* ArtisticLicenseHistory:

----
* AccentAdaptation: The real Napoleon was quite famous for speaking French with a pronounced Corsican accent which he never really lost, it indeed sounded like an Italian accented French, with even Tsar Alexander noting that ''he'' spoke better French than him. With the Animus translation, this feature gets flattened to a generalized upper class accent.

He manipulated Toussaint into surrendering to the French, leading him to die in a prison in Paris.
* TheNapoleon: He's the misunderstood TropeNamer of course, but Arno's taller than him (by a few inches, this Napoleon has the real one's height and not the caricature) and he still gets in his face, with a pistol no less.
* SurroundedByIdiots:

!! King Philip IV

King of France between 1285-1314, Philip IV, "the Fair", was one of the greatest French monarchs and one of the worst enemies of the Templar Order.
----
* CoolCrown: Sports one as he watches [[spoiler:Jacques de Molay]] burn.
* HistoricalVillainUpgrade: The Templars are full of hatred for Philip IV. The real guy was a hard-ass and an anti-semite, he was also one of the first to transform French administration from a charismatic authority to a bureaucratic Kingdom and also played a significant role in weakening the secular power of the Catholic state.
* GrayEyes: Very cold gray eyes. As noted in life, "He was neither beast nor man. He is a statue."
* ThePurge: He orders the mass execution of Templars by burning them at the stake, destroying their public role for good and driving them underground.
