It dates back as early as April 23, 2012, when at the Beijjng Auto Show, Lamborghini announced their plan to launch a luxurious SUV, which was originally powered by a 5.2 litre V10 engine taken from its own Lamborghini Gallardo, and accompanied with an all-wheel-drive system. The Lamborghini Militaria series, or LM series for short, were a series of off-road utility trucks produced by automotive manufacturer Lamborghini, a radical departure for a brand primarily known for high-performance super/sports cars (and formerly tractors before that). This chassis family existed from 1977 through 1993. It was started as an attempt at entering the military light utility truck market (the "jeep" market segment), the vehicles in the series being greatly reminiscent of the FMC XR311, and in turn of the Humvee (U.S. Army HMMWV). The series expanded into the luxury sport utility market, and its primary production run was the Lamborghini [=LM002=], which sold over 300 units. It is considered the pioneer of the luxury sport utility market, all other comparable vehicles being utility rather than luxury.

The Lamborghini [=LM002=] (''LM'' is short for Lamborghini Militaria) is an off-road vehicle made by Lamborghini between 1986 and 1993. As one can see, the [=LM002=] was an unusual departure for Lamborghini, a brand primarily known for high-performance super/sports cars (and formerly tractors before the split).

The [=LM002=] traces its origins back to 1977, when Lamborghini built its first military vehicle, a prototype vehicle named the Lamborghini Cheetah, which had a rear-mounted Chrysler V8 engine, in the hopes of selling it to companies in the oil exploration and production industry. Not being successful, Lamborghini decided to develop the [=LM001=], a vehicle that was very similar to the Cheetah, but had an AMC V8 engine.

It was finally determined that the engine being mounted in the rear, while great for super/sports cars, caused too many unfavourable handling characteristics in an offroad vehicle, and the [=LM002=] was built with an entirely new chassis, moving the engine (now the V12 out of the Lamborghini Countach) to the front, and finally became a production model. The car was memorably dubbed the "Rambo Lambo" -- not just because it looked like something John Rambo would drive, but because Creator/SylvesterStallone himself was reportedly one of its celebrity owners.
