---The series is about an eleven year old boy named Nate (Keita in Japan) who finds a capsule machine while looking for bugs in the woods. When he opens a capsule from the machine he releases a {{Yokai}} named Whisper, who decides to become his butler out of gratitude. He later gives Nate the titular Yo-Kai Watch. The Yo-Kai Watch enables Nate to see other Yo-Kai by shining a light on them. Using Yo-Kai Medals, gained from befriending Yo-Kai, Nate can also summon Yo-Kai, to battle other Yo-Kai who are causing trouble in the neighborhood.

** Gashadokuro is an oversized skeleton (meant in mythology to be the bones of multiple famine victims melded together from a mass burial, but here he's the patron saint of ''gashapon'' machines. [[IncrediblyLamePun Geddit?]])
* BlandNameProduct: #39 has the mighly-acclaimed SpaceOpera trilogy "[[Film/StarWars Space Wars]]".

At first, he was happy at the prospect of living life as a dog, but everyone assumes he's just a very deformed human and he keeps getting arrested for acting like a dog. He is one of the only Yo-Kai that can be seen by humans.
** Whisper is also a butt monkey and the main one in the series. Nobody takes him seriously or respects him, and is often on the receiving end of violent jokes. When Jibanyan and Whisper were graded by how much they're liked by Nate, Jibanyan got an A while Whisper got an E. Perhaps a little bit justified because he pretends to be a know-it-all when he doesn't actually know anything.
* ColorFailure: When Blazion fails to motivate a Hidabat-possessed Jibanyan, except he's so HotBlooded he's merely faded instead of white.
** Happens to Jibanyan in #14, due to another Yo-Kai.
* ContrivedCoincidence: Komasan runs into ''a lot'' of these. Of special note, the girl he meets in a cafe was from a ForgottenFirstMeeting!
* CompanionCube: During Manjimutt's longest prison stay to date, he makes friends with a teddy bear that becomes the only one who'll talk to him and listen to him... except ''it actually can't''.
* CountryMouse: Komasan to a "T".
* CuteKitten: Series mascot Jibanyan is an adorable ghost kitten
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Nate usually has to defeat the Yo-Kai to befriend them. It's more necessary in the games though.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything:
** [[WeirdnessCensor Manji is usually treated as an alcoholic hobo every time they bring him in.]]
** Fidgephant, the Yo-Kai causing PottyEmergency in everyone, is a little elephant. They beat him by making him pee ''from his trunk''. And that's where his Yo-Kai Medal comes out from.
** B3-NK1 in #23 can extract the core functionality of any machine by shoving his blade roughly into it. They get Robonyan to fight him, he shoves his blade into Robonyan... and Robonyan ''[[TooKinkyToTorture likes it a little too much.]]''
** One ep has Nate unknowingly caught in between two raving virulent fandoms, one for the Yokai Noko, and one for ''pandas''. Thanks to the Yokai Pandanoko (just the Noko in black and white), Nate spends a little objective observation time with each of the two fan communities, and comes to the conclusion that they're NotSoDifferent.

* DwindlingParty: Invoked and played for laughs in #18, when Nate realizes that the fact that he can summon Jibanyan via Yokai Medal means that he can leave Jibanyan to [[YouShallNotPass hold the line]] [[BlackComedy as many times as he needs to.]]

And never seems to notice how close he is. [[spoiler:Justified as Red J really is someone else!]]

* GentleGiant: Fortunately for our heroes, humongous Yokai like Dromp and Gashadokuro turn out to be this.
* GettingCrapPastTheRadar: Manjimutt's introduction episode includes him peeing on a wall. ''This is kept in the English version.''
* GhostAmnesia: A lot of the Yo-Kai that used to be animals or people don't remember their lives that well. In particular: [[spoiler: Jibanyan forgot he sacrificed his life to save the life of his owner.]]
* GhostlyGoals: A few Yo-Kai that used to be alive have a defining purpose for a while. But completing it doesn't make them AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence, it just makes them happy.
* GratuitousEnglish:
** Whisper is fond of using English interjections.
** The parody of Steve Jobs who unveils the "[=myPhone=] 6" speaks broken English with a thick accent, and uses Japanese expletives.
* {{Hikkikomori}}: A bat Yo-Kai named Hidabat ([[PunnyName Hikikoumori]] in the Japanese version).
* HopeSpot: Manjimutt's longest prison stay to date may be shortened, after he inadvertently helps an undercover agent to (literally) dig up evidence of another inmate's [[SerialKiller serial murders.]] Then it turns out said inmate is onto him... [[spoiler:Oh, and they release the wrong guy.]]
* HotBlooded: Blazion.
* InvisibleToNormals: Most of the Yo-Kai, except for Manjimutt. Also averted by Yokai Monomanekin, as a necessity since its shtick is to impersonate Nate.
* JustEatGilligan: In TheMovie, the final battle involves both Nate and Keizou summoning every Yokai they have for an all-out war - the actual problem is solved by Tattletell ''getting the truth out of the BigBad directly.''
* KarmaHoudini: A non-villain example. Komasan's blunders in the Christmas special slow down Komajirou's efforts to deliver presents before the stores close so he can buy a present for his brother, forcing him to use a taxi. Komasan finds out and yells at him for being un-Santalike. When Komasan finds out why he had to use a taxi, rather than apologize, he treats Komajirou as if he learned a valuable lesson and Komasan gets his present while Komajirou does not get one.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: Wazzat is a Yo-Kai that specifically eats memories.
* LoadsAndLoadsofCharacters: All of the Yo-Kai are invisible citizens of Nate's town, and most can recur at any time or not show up for many episodes, except for Jibanyan and Whisper.
* {{Mon}}: Yokai are treated this way however unlike other anime they don't listen to the protagonist if they don't want to.
* MultiPartEpisode: Manjimutt has one where he tries to get a job.
* MundaneMadeAwesome: Nate, afflicted by the fart-inducing Cheeksqueek, realizes he can direct attention away from it by... acting cool, BishieSparkle and everything. It doesn't work.
** One mini-arc has Nate possessed by... ''something'' that causes him to treat the school lunch like this.
** #55. The boys of Nate's class go all out to do favors for the girls just before ValentinesDay, leading to Whisper and Komasan doing ''color commentary''.
* MundaneUtility: In the anime, Nate doesn't usually use the Yo-Kai to battle, instead he summons them [[EmotionControl to influence the emotions]] of people or other Yo-Kai.
* NobodyPoops: {{Averted}} in one episode. Nate uses the bathroom in his school and Katie notices. A yokai that makes people tell secrets latches onto her and she blabs about it in front of his class, immensely embarrassing Nate.
* NonstandardCharacterDesign: Baku in #19 looks like it snuck out of the set of ''PuellaMagiMadokaMagica.''
** Gashadokuro in #54 is a rarity as he mimics the ancient Japanese woodcuts first depicting the creature, making him way more creepy than he ought to be.
* NoodlePeople: Referred to as the "8-heads-tall" body type in #19.
* PerceptionFilter: Yo-Kai can [[TransformationTrinket appear to be humans]] if they [[{{Tanuki}} put a leaf on their heads]].
* PimpedOutDress: Nate's mom in #14 goes through one after another (Yo-Kai influence, natch).
* PokemonSpeak: Yeah, they went there. Blazion and a couple of others in this case.
* PokeThePoodle: Jibanyan's possessed form is Baddinyan, a [[JapaneseDelinquents Yankee]] cat who thinks the height of evil and rebelliousness is littering and rolling around in bed.
* PottyEmergency: An episode revolved around Fidgephant causing all the boys in the school to have this.
* PragmaticAdaptation: To distinguish itself from other {{Mons}} anime, the adaptation ''heavily'' focuses on Yo-Kai having the power to [[DemonicPossession possess humans or other Yo-Kai]] to influence emotions and behavior. Unlike the games, Yo-Kai rarely if ever directly fight each other, and hardly ever use "Yo-Kaijutsu" magic spells. One episode was even a TakeThat against fans who wanted more Yo-Kai combat.
* RealAfterAll: One season 2 mini-arc has Komasan and Komajiro talent-scouted to host a "reality program" where they track down myths all over the world. Except they don't even have the budget to ''leave the country'', much less find actual myths, but they somehow have ''just enough'' budget (read: NoBudget) to stage everything for the cameras in the most quarter-assed way possible. When the cameras are off and Komasan's alone though...
* RelaxOVision: #46 cuts from [[spoiler:the visual of Yokai Unchikuma ''eating poop'' (''unchi kui'')]] to Katie and two other girls making flowers into rings. The audio's left intact though.
* RidiculouslyAverageGuy:
** This is Nate's defining trait, with even his school record constantly being average.
** Walkappa is so simple and honest that Tattletell isn't able to get him to confess any dark secrets, defeating her.
* RunningGag: Nate blaming ''every damned thing'' on Yo-Kai, which finally gets [[LampshadeHanging called out]] by Whisper. (He's usually ''right'', but still.)
* SchrodingersPlayerCharacter: Averted in the anime adaptation where the female main character (Katie) appears as one of Nate's friends. Alluded to in #67 when Whisper dreams that [[WhatIf Katie became the main character instead of Nate.]]
* SeeminglyProfoundFool: Komasan in later episodes.
* TheSevenMysteries: Of course they have to cover this one sooner or later. #60 has one of the more widely-known ones, Hanako-san, [[AllMythsAreTrue which according to Whisper is an actual Yokai, like the other six.]]
* ShaggyDogStory: One episode has Jibanyan attending a handshake event with Next Harmeowny, of the sort that involves a five-block queue. By the time he gets to about three blocks, there's this girl who walks in front of a truck and Jibanyan must sacrifice his place to save her. Just to make matters worse, they hit the quota and end the queue altogether when he gets back. Then by some miracle of anime, the girl's older sister is in Next Harmeowny, and she rewards Jibanyan with a more personal meet session.. Which is precisely when Nate medal-summons him. Jibanyan's rage and anguish are completely justified.
** Dromp concocts a maze for our heroes by rearranging the landscape, telling our heroes they only need to find Nate's home to be restored.
* ShoutOut:
** They get the obvious one out of the way in ep. 2, with Nate holding out his Tattletell medal and yelling [[{{Pokemon}} "Getto!"]] in the Japanese version.
** There's also Jibanyan's favorite band, called [[AKB48 Nya-KB 48]] in the Japanese version and Next Harmeowny in the English version, in reference to Fifth Harmony.
** Nate's [[Videogame/InazumaEleven Burning Nate Kick]].
** Manjimutt's dream of being a movie star involves [[Franchise/{{Batman}} a bat-like suit.]] [[Film/TheDarkKnightTrilogy Bonus points for doing a]] GoombaStomp on a CarCushion.
** One for the creators when Whisper refers to fart-inducing Cheeksqueek's pollution level as "Level5!"
*** Cheeksqueek also does [[Manga/CrayonShinChan a particularly familiar dance.]]
** In the first episode, Jibanyan shouts "Eye of the Tiger!" right before getting hit by a truck in the English version.
** #19 finally has Jibanyan turn his Paws of Fury into a straight-up ''FistOfTheNorthStar'' homage.
** The end of #26 has Peckpocket filching Whisper's tablet and running for it RoadRunner style.
** The ShowWithinAShow [[Film/StarWars "Space Wars"]]. The BigBad Epockman has the prerequisite armor and breathing sounds.
** #42 mentions a popular show about "Dracula", but if the ''sheriff'' costume isn't enough of a hint, the poster art we see of the cast of the show pretty much screams ''Series/TheWalkingDead.''
** #49, the ChristmasSpecial, has Komasan and Komajiro get SantaClaus' toy-distributing duties. One of the toys in the sack is most certainly [[{{Transformers}} Optimus Prime.]][[note]]HilariousInHindsight now that {{Hasbro}} has licensed the show![[/note]]
** The army of "Red J" is made up of bootleg [[KamenRider Shocker combatants.]]
** #54. Yokai Fusafusan can grow anyone's hair to ridiculous length, while some folks like Yokai get crazy hairstyles instead - Jibanyan gets one that's straight out of ''Manga/RoseOfVersailles'' (with rose motif in case you missed it.)
** #60. The toilet-dwelling Hanako-san learns to up her game, which includes [[Film/TheRing emerging from the screen via playing a cursed DVD.]]
** In the first movie, the conveniently blue-and-white cat Fuyunyan pulls out a stone that lets the user travel through time from his belt just like how ''Anime/{{Doraemon}}'' pulls gadgets out of his pocket. Even Whisper points this out after it happens:
--->Whisper: What's with the Doraemon act?
*** Also from the movie is the BigBad, modelled after the one from ''Film/AChineseGhostStory'', and another -nyan type, [[StarWars Master Nyada.]]
** #68 has the Yokai Magasasu, which resembles Pegasus, and possessing Nate [[SaintSeiya brings up a star-filled sky and makes Keita do a familiar martial arts pose.]]
** In the online-only dub episode recaps, Nate has one that doubles as an ActorAllusion for his English VA of Johnny Yong Bosch: [[Franchise/PowerRangers It's recap time!]]
SocietyMarchesOn: A couple of eps are about the way the classic ''yokai'' of folklore aren't really all that scary anymore, even the more contemporary ones like Hanako-san of TheSevenMysteries in #60. Hanako blames this on social media, spreading the buzz too far and reducing its half-life. Nate's solution - have Hanako ignore all those obscure summon rituals and just pop up unannounced from wherever and whenever, turning into a straight-up JumpScare!
* SpiritualSuccessor: A threefer - not only the popularising of ''Yo-Kai'' by ''GeGeGeNoKitaro'' ([[IncrediblyLamePun heh heh, spiritual...]]), but fills the WidgetSeries niche left by ''KeroroGunso''. The anime is also this to the the western, ''WesternAnimation/TheRealGhostbusters''.
* StockFootage: For Yo-Kai summons of course.
* SummonMagic: Needed for the whole premise, really. PlayedForLaughs in the anime, where the distinct lack of a de-summon method means the Yokai ''literally have to walk back
* TakeThat: We finally get to hear a Next Harmeowny tune for the third ED - and it's just an outright complaint about ContractualPurity.
* TertiarySexualCharacteristics: A skeletal Yo-Kai has a bow, makeup and a dress. Bear in mind ''her head is a skull.''
* ToiletHumor:
** Cheeksqueek fills the "butt-faced" requirement for this show.
** Fidgephant's power is to make people want to pee.
* TooSpicyForYogSothoth:
** Wazzat can eat people's memories, until it goes up against Manjimutt, the ButtMonkey who's got a lifetime of ''horrid'' memories.
** One episode has the PigMan Yo-Kai Sproink forcing everyone out of the hot tub at the bathhouse by making it too hot for them... but then this [[CoolOldGuy old dude]] comes along and ''turns it even higher'', forcing Sproink out.
** Espy, a mind-reading Yo-Kai, can only be stopped by Nate imagining the grossest thing possible for her to run from. It's just Nate changing his underpants in rapid succession. [[ComicallyMissingThePoint That's healthy, right?]]
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Chocolate bars for Jibanyan and soft serve vanilla ice cream for Komasan.
* WeirdnessCensor: One major reason for Nate's ButtMonkey status is Whisper taking forever to realise it when ''Nate himself is possessed''.[[note]]It's always Nate himself getting triggerhappy with calling out Yokai for everything, remember?[[/note]] It's not till #56 that Jibanyan literally takes matters into his own hands, grabbing Nate's arm to work the Yokai UV scanner himself.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: A rare justified version with Roughraff, who's based on a lizard, and thanks to his cold-blooded nature, ''cannot'' stand hot tubs.
