Ross N: The British drove the Turks out of Arabia and the Holy Land and decided it would be a great idea to split it up into countries like Iraq, Kuwait, Syria and Lebanon. That worked out slightly better than Gallipoli, another textbook example of military incomptence, masterminded by Churchill.

Um... it did work out: the Levant remained in Anglo-French control for over thirty years without too much bother (except for perpetually troublsome Israel/Palestine).

Feetman: Something I only discovered recently about Churchill (which raised my opinion of him considerably) is that after the Galipoli debacle he resigned from the admiralty and joined the infantry.

Valgaav:

  1. Literary example: All Quiet On the Western Front.
  2. This troper cannot believe that "All Quiet on the Western Front" has not yet been mentioned.

Meems: I really want to change the "darkest of comedies" line so that it links to Blackadder Goes Forth instead of Dead Baby Comedy, but that would probably defeat the purpose of the line somewhat. (No matter how appropriate it may be.)

Enough said.

Political Correctness Gone Mad (With Anti-German sentiment running high in the US, many things were re-named to disassociate them from German origins: Sauerkraut -> "Liberty Cabbage", Daschunds -> "Liberty Hounds", German Measles -> "Liberty Measles")

Skarmory The PG: This looks like a disgusting troll. Can someone confirm?

Eric Der Konig: I've definitely heard the same thing, at least for Sauerkraut and Daschunds. Several towns also changed their names.

Eric Der Konig: Added Sir Edward Grey's quote under the Blackadder quote. While I love Blackadder as much as the next person, I felt the page header needed a more serious, dramatic quote to go with it.
Ouroboros: Thinned out a shit ton of natter. Tried to get rid of some of the wanking while I was at it, from all sides.

Dreaming Ape: Shall I put in some info about the fact that the von Schlieffen plan was pretty much doomed from the start? Alfred von Schlieffen never got the time-tables (or the logistics) sorted out in the end and he bascially spent the rest of his life to get it right.

Das Auto: This Page needs a Nattercut in the Tropes section. Also, there is too much historical debate on the page itself.

Das Auto: Did some cutting/rewriting. Also, the Media section needs to be sorted.

Handy Harvey: Why is 'America Saves The Day' on this page? It isn't up for debate whether America won the war for the West in this case. They didn't. This is a well-established historical fact and including this trope is sort of like putting the 'Curbstomp Battle' trope on this page and using it to describe the conflict between the Entente and the Central Powers with the added caveat that it 'is up for debate'. I mean, it isn't, so why bother including it?

-Skip: America didn't win the war for the West? Maybe I'm misinterpreting you, but considering the way things changed thanks to the influx of American troops late in the war, I'd say that America Saves the Day is pretty darn applicable. Granted the US wasn't there for 95% of the fighting/dying, but coming in at the end and being the difference maker seems to be exactly what that trope is all about.
