Working Title: Background Dissonance: From YKTTW

glointhadark: I removed Wild Arms I, as it was a completely 2D game, I can only think it was put here by accident along with Wild Arms 2.

Pteryx: Sprite foreground/polygon background is one of my favorites!

That is all.

Medinoc: What about polygons that are "always facing the player", thus being effectively sprites ? I've seen this notably in Super Smash Bros (take a look at Zelda's all-star trophy in Melee for an example). Are they another trope entirely?

Eric DVH: Not really.

WVI: Those are sprites, but it's important to know the difference between a sprite and a polygon plane.

Eric DVH: Removed the following. Doom obviously used “real” polygons (closed figures made up of lines and corners,) the only major difference between it and Marathon was BS Ps versus portals. Oh, and “optical illusion?” Doom positioned objects based on on a system using 3D coordinates, any “3D” graphic presented on a screen is an optical illusion. Sheesh:
  • Arguably, so-called “2.5D” games (like most pre-Quake FPSs) would qualify. Notably, however, Doom and Wolfenstein 3 D do not qualify because they don't use polygonal backgrounds at all, instead relying on a clever optical illusion to provide the 3D effect. Marathon, however, used true (but rather limited) polygonal backgrounds.

Curtmack: And I removed the reference to "2.5D" because it's not an accurate use of the term. A "2.5D" game is a game with 3D graphics that represent a strictly 2D world. Super Smash Bros is 2.5D. Doom is not.
