Radhreni: Can Media Watchdog activity in the nineties be blamed for this trope, at least in the US? The Toyetic entry on The Other Wiki implies that the FCC's law has been around for almost 4 decades. (Also, He Man and Transformers both came out of the 80s, not the 90s.)

Medinoc:
This extends to showing real products in the show itself, which, interestingly, in Yu-Gi-Oh, led to all the text being wiped off the cards in the American version so they don't look like the real ones.
Was that the real reason ? I remember reading somewhere that this was done to avoid translating them from Japanese...

Broken Chaos: It's a favoured theory, considering the cards were translated and look much more real in The Movie. Perhaps the biggest argument for this is that the cards weren't simply wiped of text, but entirely redesigned.

Shrikesnest: Eh. Whether it's the exact reason or not, it's a real enough concern for the show's translators.
