  • I think the red color may come from the red lights used during WWII at night. These served the dual purpose of preserving the crew's night vision and being more difficult for the enemy to spot than a white light if somone accidentally opened a door at the wrong time.
Alternatively, they could be derived from "battle lighting" on submarines of the period—dim, reddish lights which were sometimes the only thing left working in the compartment after a depth charge went off a little too close.
