API (Armor Piercing Incendiary) and APIT (Armor Piercing Incendiary, Tracer) rounds in rifle and larger calibers have been around since World War I. The Raufoss MP is an impressive bit of engineering, and the US military is rumored to purchase significant stocks of this ammunition from the manufacturer, but is not unique, only one of the better implementations of the concept in the world arms marketplace today.
