Eyclonus: I'm guessing everyone here is fine with including stuff from the various Dune games and the alternate continuities...

Micah: I'd say that sounds reasonable. If they start taking over the page, you might want to split them off.

Can anyone explain exactly WHY the recent novels apparently haven't been taken good? I haven't been able to find a single person who actually thinks so, not counting the people who hate sci-fi(or even just books) in general. Plus, I see no difference in style between the two authors, and I definitely haven't seen a single so-called Asspull.

  • Luke The White: The problem that I found in the new ones is that they talk down to you, while the original ones dragged you to Mr. Herbert's level and made yuo understand them ( ... or not, but at least they tried). They also break continuity at certain points, and don't carry the same sense of wonder and love that Mr. Herbert put into the original.

Grimace: Question about the novels (specifically Dune and Dune Messiah) - as Arrakis is a desert planet ("No, really?!" I hear you cry), and the Fremen are so notoriously hard because the living conditions are so tough, even if the Freman can tear through Sardukar like they're made of tissue paper, how could there possibly be enough of them to conquer the Galaxy? Uniting the tribes and claiming Arrakis is one thing, but the massive jihad described in Messiah, with the Fremen causing a rucking every which-where, hits a logic wall with me. Any other tropers have an explanation I missed?

Master Ghandalf: I'd always assumed that after Shaddam was forced to abdicate his throne to Paul, Paul got the vast bulk of non-Sardaukar Imperial soldiers under his command as well, with the Fremen replacing the Sardaukar as the new elite. So most of the jihad would have been carried out by normal soldiers, with the Fremen acting as the catalyst and driving force.

grendelkhan: Re-added Mighty Whitey. The only reason explicitly given for removal was that Paul is not white. (a) He's white in every adaptation I've seen, while the Fremen are at least a little bit swarthy, and (b) it doesn't matter; in-universe, Paul is born to the nobility and ends up leading the savages. It's also explicitly mentioned in this io9 article. Objections should be a little more concrete, please.
Ripsaw: Why the negative emphasis on the, let's say, Expanded Dune Universe? I like 'em, and have heard only one bad review to several good ones (from people I know, not online). Is this just another example of GIFT in action?

To make this concrete, I think this page should be rewritten to be neutral, or split into original universe and expanded. From the tone, many people who might read and enjoy the books won't due to the overwhelming negative vibes from this page.

I know I use TV Tropes as a gauge for what people (I'm talking here about people, not reviewers) think about a game/movie/book series before taking the plunge. I imagine others do the same.
