A trollish deconstruction of the Slice of Life Webcomic

Much in the same way that My Immortal is the ultimate deconstruction of the fanfic, here is the ultimate deconstruction of the "slice of life" webcomic, personified in comics like Questionable Content, Candi, or other webcomics that generally don't have a point. With the greater allowances for explicit content on the internet, the genre has become a place where casual sex, stupidity of its protagonists, and Seinfeldian pointlessness can reach its true comedic pinnacle. It is the place where the writer can place their freudian id out into the open and imagine (through their protagonists) what the perfect life would be.

Here is that pinnacle.

I give credit to Woc Girl, the writer, for showing us that they are clever enough not to appear clever. Our protagonists are not sympathetic. No one they hate deserves the hatred- indeed, the comic goes out of its way to show that the other characters whom the protagonists hate and scorn care about them (in the case of family) and otherwise act in perfectly reasonable ways (Summer's boss at the hospital is explicitly acknowledged to be a great boss- Summer still hates him.) Finally, all the truly funny jokes are based not on what the *characters* think is funny- but on how much these people are idiots.

So you get a comic which for the most part is intensely obscene, sparsely drawn, based on the alleged writers' perfect vision of their life without fetters, and apparently hideously unfunny.

Yet it is hideously funny, once you look past it. What can be more morbidly funny than two examples of people who really shouldn't be parents- being parents? What can be more morbidly funny than two people who shun people who care about them, treat their relationship (for it is a relationship) as a pointless fuck contract, and can't even manage to have a child through something *they* share rather than random occurrences, *forming a family unit?*

It is not a co-incidence that the title of the webcomic is based on a stupid, Seinfeldian argument by the two protagonists on how to name their children. Woc Girl even lampshades it.

Moon Over June is a brilliant, trollish reflection of the darkest recesses of our psyches and those who write webcomics. It is the My Immortal of the genre.

I salute you, Woc Girl. I don't care if everything you write is in earnest- you are a brilliant deconstructionist.

I really hope you're right. If this turned out to be a serious idea rather than a deconstruction *

, I don't know what I would do.

Also, that's a bloody awesome review. Just putting that out there.

EDIT: Noticed that the characters have a number of shading and body design issues that manage to invoke Body Horror while still making them appear fundamentally human. They're covered more in detail on the So Bad Its Horrible entry.
