TVT tries to avoid using real life examples, especially of highly pejorative concepts like this. This trope is specifically about a fandom phenomenon and thus about real life (fictional examples, the scant few this has, would probably belong on Yes-Man). Therefore, I've taken it upon myself to perform a most bloody Example Sectionectomy. If I'm being unreasonable, undo it and we can discuss it here. I might argue the page as a whole could go, but it IS a definite fandom phenomenon. I just don't think we need to make it into some kind of pillory for those accused of it.
Edited by Venatius Hide / Show RepliesOn second thought, almost nothing established here wouldn't be better served going on Fan Dumb - where it basically already exists, with a slightly different stylistic slant, in the form of the "Misplaced Champion" entry. I've sent this to the Cut List. If anyone would like to weigh in, please do so. I really cannot imagine any productive use for this or ways to fix it. Maybe that's a failure of my imagination, but...
Edited by VenatiusI agree that this page needs work and possibly cut, but this isn't really the way things are done around here. You can't make large-scale changes to a page without consensus. There is a Trope Repair Shop (TRS) in the forums that is specifically for pointing out problems with existing pages and figuring out how best to fix them.
Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.Fair enough. Is there a problem with the "make a big move, undo it if there's a problem, discuss it" model? Wikipedia calls it "BRD" (Bold, Revert, Discuss), clearly that's not how things work here. But I have no objection to discussion or to the trope repair shop approach. I'll submit it to TRS as soon as there's an opening.
Edited by LevicusYup, we don't do things quite like wikipedia. Best thing to do is bring it up in the Trope repair shop first. All of those threads have a time limit, and that way, everyone has a chance to discuss what should be done. Then the trope is repaired or sent to the cutlist. So i guess oyu could say we have a "Discuss, Repair/Destroy" process here. The reason we don't delete before discussion is because of the strong feelings of various fandoms often clouding judgement on tropes, example and the like. Causes flamewars and angst.
DoodlesMy mistake. I thought the nomination for deletion was to spur the discussion, not to come after it. Essentially I thought I was putting it on the table by adding it to the cut list, not acting as though it was already decided. I understand better now. I'll pass this on to TRS when the opportunity arises. Thanks. Sorry about the bit of "culture shock" there. The en masse deletion was done in the aforementioned "BRD" spirit, with the assumption it'd be undone if it bothered anyone - which it did, and which it was, so, hey, I guess that works out.
Edited by LevicusThis really needs to be TRS'd, I agree. Should in-universe trope rather than complaints in fandom.
"You want to see how a human dies? At ramming speed." - Emily Wong.<Moderator>
There's no need to TRS this. The page is obviously an excuse to bitch about fandoms you don't like, and as such has no business having any kind of examples. Venatius took the proper action in principle, even though it should have been discussed first, and only a moderator is allowed to approve an Example Sectionectomy without TRS.
Edited by Fighteer "It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Just one final comment: the 'don't delete' idea only has to do with whole sections or tropes. Deleting wrong examples and changing things around is perfectly fine.
DoodlesMy apologies again. I wasn't really cognizant of that policy. It wasn't specified in the Example Sectionectomy page that this is reserved for moderators, and my dramatic action was a consequence of cross-wiki culture clash. Slight clarification: I'm "Levicus" above. It looks like somehow, unnoticed by me, I got known on my home computer and my work computer as two separate identities, which was unintentional. I'll correct my login at home - this is the name and identity I intend to post under. I didn't even notice until now I was posting under two different handles. I'm an administrator on Wikipedia (under neither of these names), so I'm really trenched in some of the culture and mindsets there, as well as a very different set of duties. The aforementioned "no harm, no foul" BRD practice is what tripped me up. I now understand we don't do that on TVT.
Edited by VenatiusHow can there be no mention of Smithers, and even no Western Animation section at all? Burns even -called- him that once.
Hide / Show RepliesI don't watch "the Simpsons" but that's a close example. But some people may see him more as a hired assistant than an intense fan.
Smithers is a Yes-Man. We already have a trope for that.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I feel like this trope is just being used, and was in fact created, so people could bash fandoms they didn't like.
Am I the only one who finds this entire page to be mean-spirited, and doesn't think it should have an example section?
Hide / Show RepliesLate response, but I agree. The entire trope seems to be some sort of Real Life version of The Yes Man. I'm wondering if we really need this one tbh.
Stargate SG-1 Let's Watch. Because my ZHP thing failed. Is it appropriate to have real life esamples on this page?
Hide / Show RepliesOf what? People who we think have lickspittles or examples of lickspittles? I think the first is fair but the second less so.
