  • Deadwood's very premise was a growing, lawless Wild West town inhabited by unsavory pioneers who were either various shades of grey or swallowed whole when they didn't live to the harsh life in the camp. Mob boss and pimp Al Swearengen was first envisioned as a darker shade than other characters, but Ian McShane's choice to give him a hidden softer side was acclaimed by both viewers and creators. Finally, the dialogue used some free, albeit flowery use of swearing and derogatives not seen until then in television, which was seen as hilarious and became the instant trademark of the series. All of these aspects would grow to the point of derailment in either Season 2 or 3:

I don't see how any of these are examples of the trope. I haven't heard anyone complain that Swearengen's character development was a problem with the show. The only thing people consistently complained about was that the show was prematurely canceled without a satisfying ending. That and the theater troupe, which only shows up in the third season and doesn't pay off because of the same cancellation. As for the loads of characters, they're killed off as fast as they're introduced. And as for the language, it doesn't get any more dense that it was at the start.
