I'm not sure that paying/bribing/blackmailing Rita Skeeter to keep in line is really a case of Cut Lex Luthor a Check. My understanding of that trope is that it's about an opportunity to make money from something.

If Rita had taken the initiative and approached Harry about making such a deal, instead of pursuing her canon harassment, that might qualify, I suppose, but I don't think it works when it's all about Harry taking the initiative.

What trope would fit it better, though?

Yes, the story hasn't been updated since December 15th, 2009, but the author hasn't outright said the story has been abandoned. It's classified as a Dead Fic by that trope's definition so I put that trope up. Please don't list it as abandoned until the author says so. Thank you for your time.

Question on the Designated Hero trope. It's been a while since I've read the story but didn't Harry go about the possibility of ruining the Dursley's as an insurance to keep them at bay? He didn't do anything until after he was nearly killed. I don't see anything Designated Hero about unleashing a bit of revenge on people that abused and nearly killed you.

Edit: Ok I reread a bit of it and this is the bit why I took Designated Hero down.

"You wish him dismissed from his post for revenge?" Goldfarb asked, but it wasn't really a question.

But Harry shook his head, making the goblin raise a gnarled eyebrow. "I wish leverage, not vengeance. There have been… incidents. I want a way to end those." Harry looked thoughtful for a moment. "If they… continued… and something happened to me, my uncle's family constitutes my sole remaining relatives. Were they to gain control of my assets they would immediately withdraw them and place them in a Muggle institution."

It is clearly stated he is having this as leverage not revenge. It sounds like he doesn't intend to used it except as a last resort, and he probably never expected things to turn out as bad as they did.

  • Fridge Logic: If Occlumency is so easy to learn, why didn't Dumbledore use it during the war? Or even as an extracurricular activity? Seriously, almost all the characters learn to use it to near expert level by reading books and practicing a few hours every day. Why would Americans came to help during the Second Magician War and not the other European Communities? How could it last so much time in obscurity of Muggle radars with the insane levels of Murder and collateral damage for years? Why would Snape, a capable spy, act in such an obvious evil way to the point it gets him sacked?
    • The characters practice a few hours a day for the better portion of two years to become experts in the field, which is not a luxury you have when you’re waging a war full time. It was mentioned in his author notes that the American peace keeping force was the group Harry ran into and there were other countries involved that Harry never met. It’s likely it was either passed off as terrorists or the people that saw what happened realized no one would believe them. Snape was antagonized by Harry who escalated their rivalry to remind him too much of his father. It’s entirely possible that Snape wouldn’t have been sacked if Draco hadn’t gone to such an extreme in getting the invisibility cloak.
  • So Okay, It's Average: Is a grammatically good story, had interesting characterization, deep exploration of Magical racism and a few moments of Awesome, Funny and Heartwarming. But is also rather flat, one dimensional Villains with idiot balls glued to their backs, Derailment and Filibuster to near toxic levels and use too much angst, sometimes badly managed.
    • Now this is where your mileage may very. Some people see this, others will see a good story, and still others will be turned off from it from the beginning.

About the Occlumency and the war. If I understand well the canon (which is book canon until the divergence and book 6): The First War lasted well over a Decade and it was more of an attrition war (Terrorist attacks, splinter cell combats and the like) than full out war. That would have allowed the Order and Aurors to practice more easily and with better equipment. Second, this were all grown wizards, several of them Aurors (i.e battle mage) which mean they will be more in tune with their magic and would be easily to master it having previous training and could practice day in and day out; Third, lack of time would hardly be an issue for the fight of survival (Harry and Co do it and the Second war was by far worse). It just seem... well no offense to fans but it’s so silly that Harry was the only Wizard in history who learned that Occlumency was so easy to learn and somehow still believed to be an special ability, more so when Voldemort was feared as the greatest Legilimens ever lived. And about Snape... Yes, he was nasty and mean but the Fic put him in such One-dimensional line of being evil (a recurrent feature in S'tarkan) that it became an strawmen, and a badly bad at that. You cant simply take him seriously. If going by the tip of the fingers he was supposed to be an accomplished spy for over a Decade and he act with the self control of a 2 year old with severe sociopathic disorder just because James son call him Names. It was when he called Hermione a Mudblood and threatened to brake her wand that it passed from tolerable to cartoon idiocy.

The masquerade... Dozens of buildings razed, hundreds (may even thousands) dead, inexplicable terrorist attacks that no group take credit for years, long line of unresolved murders and quite likely far, far worse, oh and the Ministry is completely destroyed meaning that no one was there to put a wool over the incidents. I mean Muggle stupidity can only go so far; hell not even Jim Butcher would managed to get away with this and he go beyond the Impossible to justify the Masquerade.

Okay, guys:

Thank you for keeping this civil, and not personally attacking each other.

Ancient, you've proven you've got an open mind about things with other edits here as well. Your opinions here would make a great review, and I'd like Unclouded TJ to do one too. We might even need a WMG or (if we have them yet) Fridge Logic page for this.

For the record, Ancient, your points the things that niggle at me even though I like this fic. I'm just wanting to see them in the right place so they can be preserved, and not taken out in a moderator pass.

And Unclouded TJ... thank you for being reasonable, even in your disagreement. I think you've both been very polite, while still "sticking to your guns" so to speak.

Spelin erroars hont me.

Thanks for the honest opinon. So, umm, should we create a WMG or Fridge Logic Page for such discussion? The fact is I don't know how to create such a function in TV Tropes (or in what part it should be put) so I sadly wouldn't be able to help and it would be good to create one, since discussing the pro and cons of a work (be literature, movie, web etc.)is one of the best things in the medium. Specially in the Internet with so much International Point of view (Values and Moral dissonance being some of my favorite pages) to pick for.

Sorry for being of so little help.
