Should this article get a re-title?
Originally, it just covered The Promise trilogy, but now it's expanded to cover The Search as well, presumably Mai's upcoming free comic, and there are still unannounced comics in the pipeline. So the page's title is a misnomer at this point.
So I propose to re-title this article as something along the lines of "Avatar Expanded Universe."
Yes, we've only had AtLA comics so far, but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that we might eventually get some that crossover directly into the Korra Era. Plus, we could also include the EU stuff for the reviled live-action movie that way; Zuko's Story was actually pretty good, for instance, and this wiki does try to index everything non-pornographic.
So for the sake of future-proofing, I say we go with just "Avatar Expanded Universe."
Leaving this here for debate, as people's thoughts vary on it.
"Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Yu Dao itself turns the entire series into this. The city is not a conquered territory, but a multicultural economic powerhouse(albeit with some racial issues to sort out - and are in the process of defending the city). And as it is the oldest of all of the Fire Nation colonies, it might even be the city that caused Roku to blow his top at Sozin. And Aang choosing to protect it rather than break it up is the conception of The Legend Of Korra's United Republic Of Nations. If Roku had chosen to calmly debate Sozin's plans rather than shoot him down, not only would his death by volcano, the Air Nomad Genocide, and the Hundred Year War have been averted, but the Avatar-verse's Industrial Revolution would have occurred a hundred and fifty years earlier. All because the Avatar couldn't talk plainly with the Fire Lord. Pitch-black hilarious part? It came within seconds of happening all over again. Twice. Only Katara's intervention saved the day.
NOYB seems to think that Sozin turned completely EVUL in Roku's absence, and was basically saying, "Hey! Buddy! You're the Avatar, I'm the Fire Lord, together we'd be unstoppable! Let's Take Over the World!" Why would Sozin think that twelve years globetrotting would make Roku agree with that? It's more likely, given that the multi-ethnic Yu Dao was the first result of Sozin's original plan, that he was about to suggest that poorer cities in the Earth Kingdoms and Water Tribes be turned into British Hong Kong-style international zones. Economic expansion, not military. Roku just shot him down without even listening. And a century and a half later, Aang was listening to Zuko, but also to Roku, who wasn't listening to Zuko.

If it's going to say, it needs to be rewritten so it doesn't sound so damn excited. It's like...chill out.

That first colony? The one in "The Avatar and the Fire Lord?" No scorch marks in sight.

I don't think it's a Broken Aesop, in the sense that this was a case where there were no easy answers and it was presented as such. The Fire Nation was wrong for doing what they did, but part of the problem is that the conquered EK citizens have since been naturalized and sending the Fire Nation citizens would involve breaking up the families that had intermingled, and destroying what had been the established order.
