The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Trying to rediscover a long lost show or other medium but need a little help? Head to Media Finder and try your luck there. Want to propose a new trope? You should be over at You Know, That Thing Where.
Find a Trope:
resolved Agree, Agree... Oh, Crap!
Bob keeps agreeing to whatever Alice says, and instinctively replies "yes" to the last question as well, only to realise that it was an odd one out. Basically, what's in the title.
resolved Cure Your Asexuals
There's trope about "curing" gays "back into straightness", Cure Your Gays, but what to do with similar situations regarding asexuality (i.e. "if he/she isn't interested in sex, you never tried hard enough")?
Alice's plan to seduced Bob (it didn't go as intended, if that matters, due to Bob making wrong conclusions): 1) Pretend to be asexual; 2) Bob falls for her, and tries to "cure" her; 3) Alice plays along; 4) They are dating.
resolved Happy to be Hated Web Original
A character is disliked or rejected. It seems like he'd be in hell, but he's actually happy - because the one(s) hating him do so because of a quality he's proud of.
The standard joke I'm thinking of (from Saturday Morning Breakfast Theater) is when a woman breaks up with a man because she thinks her penis is too big, and he's smiling about it.
One example that's not R-rated I remember is an episode of The Simpsons where a teacher is mean to Lisa despite them sharing academic interests, and in the end, the teacher reveals she's always been jealous of pretty girls like Lisa, so Lisa feels good about being hated "for that reason".
resolved Water is Mystical
I've been searching a bit, but nothing definitive came up - do we have one about how water often signifies something otherworldly? There's plenty of tropes about specific water - The Fair Folk or water - magic connections, like: Cannot Cross Running Water, Healing Spring, Symbolic Serene Submersion (especially Instant Oracle: Just Add Water!) and so on. But a general supertrope? Do we have one?
resolved So short, the camera misses him (SOLVED) Film
Is there a trope for when a character is depicted as comically short, so the camera pans to him, he's nowhere to be found, then the camera pans down? Can be inverted, where the camera pans up to see his face.
A variation is when all characters are standing side by side, but we can only see the short character's hat.
Edited by Mac_Rresolved Baby Talk
Is their a baby equivalent to Animal Talk, eg babies can talk to each other and understand adults but adults can't understand them eg Rugrats, Baby Geniuses, Look Who's Talking, Arthur and sometimes Family Guy
Edited by jormis29resolved Why did the chicken cross the road?
Do we have a trope for the joke format "Why did the _________ cross the road?"
resolved Touch to Activate Power
A character has to have physical contact with something in order to use their powers. Usually a brief touch is enough. For example:
Uraraka from My Hero Academia has to touch objects to use her gravity powers on them.
Shigaraki (also from MHA) has to touch people with all five of his fingers in order to disintegrate them.
Soifon from Bleach has to touch someone twice in the same spot to instantly kill them.
Jaune from Arc of the Revolution has to make physical contact in order to amplify the Aura of someone (unlike in canon where he can do this from a distance).
Matthew from Weight of the World has to touch someone in order to erase their memory. His brother has to have physical contact with technology in order to manipulate it.
Gambit has to touch objects to turn their potential energy into kinetic energy. Rogue can copy people's powers by touching them.
Is there a trope or TLP for this? I know Touch Telepathy and Touch of Death exist but there does not seem to be a trope for other touch-activated powers.
Edited by EmeraldSkyresolved Strip of light over character's eyes. Name of the technique? Film
Hey everyone, out of curiosity, what's the name of the effect when there is a strip of light over a character's eyes? For example, in the 1991 Addams's Family film and its sequel 'Values', there are many scenes where Morticia Addams eyes are accentuated (to mimic old vampire movies where this technique was used.
It was also used in the Harry Potter movie on Lucius's Malfoy, 007 with Daniel Craig and so on.
resolved Same Pose Scene Walkthrough
A character stays in the same pose while the scenery around them changes, commonly used to indicate the passing of time. Do we have this? Or should I bring this to the TLP?
resolved Fake out ending
When the credits or end sequence of a game/movie plays before it's actually over, and usually something interrupts the credits so the game/movie can continue. Example: In Rhythm Heaven Megamix, the credits play when you clear Lush Tower, showing Tibby in the background going to Heaven World, but he falls back down to Earth World and the story continues with more rhythm games.
Edited by moefoxesresolved Heavenly Concentric Circles
Is there a trope for when Heaven or its equivalents are depicted as concentric circles of stuff (like colors) or people (e.g., concentric circles of flying angels)?
I've seen it in many Renaissance paintings.
resolved Self-damaging attack Literature
Trying to find a trope for attacks that also slightly injure the attacker, a la Take Down in Pokémon. I looked at Self-Damaging Attack Backfire but that's not it.
ETA: The specific example I'm thinking of is new information about Lesedi Ingwe from Reign of the Seven Spellblades: she's a Kung-Fu Wizard Kick Chick who, it turns out, normally wears armor on her legs because otherwise she'd injure herself from the force of her kicks (apparently she lacks Required Secondary Powers). She takes them off in her fight scene in volume 10 to lose the Power Limiter, which ends with the flesh on her legs in tatters. I currently have the information listed as an inversion of Armed Legs.
Edited by StarSwordresolved Grabbing the sheets Film
A sort of discretion shot to imply sexual activity.
A character's hand, and maybe their bare forearm but no more, is shown on top of a sheet on the bed the character is lying on. The hand is palm down with the fingers spread and the character is implied to be lying supine.
As we watch, the hand grabs the sheet in its fingers and squeezes it tight. Then cut away to another scene entirely.
This doesn't seem to be listed at Hand Tropes.
Edited by marnanelresolved random words as insults
not using similar-but-less-vulgar words instead of curse words, but rather using random words in their place. best example i can think of right now is “santa chihuahua!” from the book of life. i’ve also noticed a lot of instances where the random “swears” were actually food names.
resolved One Man Show
Where most characters in a work are played by the same actor, just putting on different voices and costumes.
Puppet shows,Youtube sketches, etc.
I think South Park has a version of this going on too but with 2-3 people.
Edit: Oh I guess it's just an exaggerated version of Acting for Two.
I think it's a bit different when the entire cast is made up of one person, but good enough.
Edited by IronAnimationresolved Chain of pulling
A character grabs another to save them (from falling off a cliff), but needs someone else to grab them fast, and so on.
resolved shocked by bad language Literature
Do we have a trope for a character being shocked by another character's bad or uncouth language? I mean irrespective of whether they're a Sir Swears-a-Lot, this would be a reaction trope.
resolved Different Time Measure Tropes
Is there a trope about measuring time on earth/other places according to things like "moons", seasons, or the like? Such as a character saying they're "seven winters old".
I've seen this a lot but can't really pinpoint too many examples - stuff in the late eighties/early nineties having title cards with purple, teal, pink and yellow, with elements like swirls, triangles and squiggly line patterns in the background.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
