The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Trying to rediscover a long lost show or other medium but need a little help? Head to Media Finder and try your luck there. Want to propose a new trope? You should be over at You Know, That Thing Where.
According to that page, this is considered covered by Cast from Hit Points. Although it definitely would make sense as it's own subtrope.
Edited by IronAnimationhuh yeah, genuinely surprised we don't have a Recoil Damage page since that's a very common video game term
^^Hesitant to use that because the actual example I'm thinking of isn't as formal as Cast from Hit Points: it's basically busting your knuckles punching somebody out, but on steroids.
v Not that much on steroids lol.
Edited by StarSwordI think the difference between "pay HP to use this move" or "lose HP as a side effect to this move" is just splitting hairs
Despite it's name, Cast From HP isn't actually specifically about HP. This isn't a video game trope trying to cover all HP losing mechanics.
It's a trope about superpowers and the like that drain the person's life energy to use, such as blood magic. Recoil damage from a punch really isn't that.
Now in a video game it can be interpreted like that, since hp is a mechanic and losing it for any reason can be interpreted as a magic resource drain. But the situation itself isn't actually fitting the trope at all. Breaking your arm punching something is not cast from your HP.
Edited by IronAnimationThere is Death or Glory Attack, except that perhaps the OP wanted something less extreme than "death"
I have definitely used Cast from Hit Points to cover attacks in games like this, but as the discussion seems to show, a game-specific sister (sub?) -trope around recoil damage seems to have some room to stand on its own.
For more information (I'll edit this into the OP), the specific example I'm thinking of is new information about Lesedi Ingwe from Reign of the Seven Spellblades: she's a Kung-Fu Wizard Kick Chick who, it turns out, normally wears armor on her legs because otherwise she'd injure herself from the force of her kicks (apparently she lacks Required Secondary Powers). I currently have the information listed as an inversion of Armed Legs.
Deku from My Hero Academia also does this if you're looking for a 3rd example for a TLP on Recoil Damage
Edited by IronAnimationRecoil Damage TLP created. Closing this.
Trying to find a trope for attacks that also slightly injure the attacker, a la Take Down in Pokémon. I looked at Self-Damaging Attack Backfire but that's not it.
ETA: The specific example I'm thinking of is new information about Lesedi Ingwe from Reign of the Seven Spellblades: she's a Kung-Fu Wizard Kick Chick who, it turns out, normally wears armor on her legs because otherwise she'd injure herself from the force of her kicks (apparently she lacks Required Secondary Powers). She takes them off in her fight scene in volume 10 to lose the Power Limiter, which ends with the flesh on her legs in tatters. I currently have the information listed as an inversion of Armed Legs.
