Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
You can already scratch off Hartman Hips, because Fischl doesn't have that kind of disproportionate physique.
"They played us like a DAMN FIDDLE!" — Kazuhira Miller, Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom PainI think they should be allowed (I don't think there's anyway to police that and teen characters do get fanservice tropes a lot unfortunately) but we just have to make sure the example don't look drooly which isn't easy.
I will say though, that she's definitely not a Ms. Fanservice because many female characters dress skimpily like she is and she isn't being used as a vehicle for fanservice. I don't think there are any characters on Genshin that fit that trope to begin with really (despite it being listed under multiple characters on the Genshin character pages) but I digress.
I was ninja'd buut I agree that Hartman Hips can go as well like Ano said.
Edited by MacronNotes Macron's notesHere are some examples I had to comment out from the page.
- Ms. Fanservice: Let's see, long legs? Check. Broad hips? Check. An outfit that's little more than panties and a flowing corset that barely covers her breasts once you remove all the sheer material? Checks across the board.
- Stripperiffic: Just look at her outfit. It's a leotard with parts of it replaced with sheer material, a skirt that doesn't even go all the way around, and sheer gloves and stockings. It hardly looks like something suitable for adventuring. (NOTE: This was the original example. The current example is rewritten to be more tame.)
About Stripperiffic, her clothes don't took too revealing to me as it covers a large part of her torso and her limbs are covered by gloves and stockings. Overall it looks less "sexy" and more "edgy/dark/gothic", which fits her Chuunibyou personality.
THE GOLDEN AGE WILL RETURN AGAIN!Yeah, Fischl's outfit is only mildly racy because there's panthyhose and one garter strap involved, but really nothing revealing and more in line with her Chuuni delusions of grandeur. Besides, she's a Long-Range Fighter in a playable cast that's already mostly unarmoured.
"They played us like a DAMN FIDDLE!" — Kazuhira Miller, Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom PainAlright, if the Fanservice tropes are misuse, I'll remove them from her character profile.
Misuse of those tropes notwithstanding, the vast majority of the world (including most of the United States) has an age of consent below 18. It shouldn't be our job to Right Great Wrongs and remove/ban fanservice tropes for characters just for not being 18 when those tropes do in fact apply, just because the standards in China are different than they are in the United States.
If the character is clearly underage by the standard of the work, or is clearly intended to resemble a child (not just a teenager, but an actual child), that's one thing - but we shouldn't shy away from documenting things as they are because of cultural differences, especially considering that teenagers being used for fanservice is nothing new.
That said, the entries for Fischl seemed more like someone going on about their fantasies of her than actual effort to document the tropes (especially considering that, as mentioned, they were inapplicable to her). That sort of thing isn't in line with how we should document tropes, per No Lewdness, No Prudishness:
- Overly detailed examples. The example doesn't need to be an exact sensory account of the event. Too much of that and you end up sounding like you're writing porn. When in doubt, drop a few adjectives.
^ Understood. As long as the Fanservice examples for teenager characters are not overly excessive to the point of blatant lewdness, I have no problems with them.
Exactly - edited my comment to elaborate after your follow-up comment.
I'm just.. a guy....There's also probably some cultural parochialism regarding interpreting "Drinking age" to mean majority. In my area, legal majority comes at 18 - you can join the military, enter contracts, vote, get married, etc. However, you cannot buy alcoholic beverages until you reach 21. It's also illegal for anyone other than a parent or spouse to buy them for you. (Bars and restaurants can loose their booze licenses over this)
^Drinking age in Mondstadt (the relevant area for Fischl) is 18.
I'm just.. a guy....I've seen on and off discussions on fanservice tropes for children and perhaps unifying them in a Wiki Talk thread is due.
(Also, with all due practicality age of consent laws are about sexual intercourse, not fanservice. Child pornography laws would be a better comparison, and these are usually stricter)
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman^That is fair. It's hard to argue, however, that works seeing wide success internationally are actively promoting child pornography without significant global backlash, which is why I feel such an argument would be a huge stretch at best.
EDIT: To me (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, OP), this came off more as a question of whether it is morally acceptable for us to document the relevant (or, in this case, irrelevant) tropes, which is where different societal standards came into play. A game that is rated T by the ESRB in the United States and is hosted on app stores clearly does not violate any child pornography laws here, and simply documenting applicable tropes would not be any more illegal than the actual work itself.
Where the line might be drawn is in excessive detail, but that's already covered by No Lewdness, No Prudishness.
Edited by AGuy I'm just.. a guy....I think that even if the work itself isn't lewd and doesn't violate any laws, trope examples that sexualize children would count as lewd (and thus violate No Lewdness, No Prudishness).
Edited by GnomeTitanWhich is why trope descriptions should describe things as they are, not go on about someone's fantasies involving young characters.
I'm just.. a guy....We don't know about Fischl's age yet, but whether or not we get an offischl announcement is up to MiHoYo.note
Edited by SilverCrownI think we can close this query now. I already have the answers I was looking for, so I can just keep an eye on examples and make sure they don't go excessively lewd per No Lewdness, No Prudishness.
Before that, I think someone should PM the troper who added the entry that they should quit one-hand troping.
After reading Septimus' post, I went ahead and started a discussion about fanservice tropes and underage characters here
My troper wall
On Characters.Genshin Impact Mondstadt, I'm facing quite a conundrum. The character Fischl is being subjected to Fanservice tropes like Ms. Fanservice, Hartman Hips and Stripperiffic because of her outfit, which is quite revealing in the game indeed. However, it's heavily implied that Fischl is underaged because, despite the game never actually revealing her age, it is said that she is under the drinking age, and her claims of being Really 700 Years Old is just a lie because of her Chuunibyou side. I had to comment out a few examples because of potential No Lewdness, No Prudishness violations.
What should I do about this if the character's age isn't revealed but is still implied to be a minor?
