Nippon Ichi (Disgaea, Makai Kingdom, etc.)

Heh. Ages in Nippon Ichi games. She may very well be seventeen thousand years old.

Well.

I think Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice might've become an obsession of mine.

Now, I'm brainstorming 2 things:

• 1) The possibility/feasibility of adapting Disgaea 3 as a series of anime movies a la Persona 3: The Movie.
• 2) A hypothetical compilation series of every Disgaea game (minus 5) made specifically for Nintendo Switch that can be released in separate "volumes" that are in order of chronology. The idea is that, what NIS is doing to release Disgaea 5 for the Switch, they can do with the rest of the series:
  • Volume 1: Disgaea 1, Disgaea D2, Disgaea 2
  • Volume 2: Disgaea Infinite(?), Disgaea 3, Disgaea 4

Who would you say is strongest Nippon Ichi protagonist?

• Laharl
• Mao
• Absolute Victory Unlosing Ranger
• Zetta
• Renya Kagurazaka from Guided Fate Paradox?

Maybe bump Zetta off the list since he's positioned as the "strongest" right from the start and nerfed immediately after.

And Rozalin, depending on how much of her old power she retains.

Asagi.

She managed to survive in a battle against over ten main characters in the post-game of 4.

I don't really think the power levels are at all consistent. I'm just going to say Zenon since she was getting so strong she actually started to mutate into something worse than a demon and doesn't seem to be killable.

But then I'm not sure she really counts given that she's not the protagonist, even if the story is about her.

I, personally, consider Rosaline and Zenon to be two separate characters, even if that doesn't make 100% sense.

Also, did Priere destroy her home universe, or did NI retcon that? Does anyone really know?

Over time, Flonne could become very powerful in her own right, as seen in A Brighter Darkness.

Huh, Gig isn't even in the running. That says something. Or are we only counting Revya as the protag?

My post originally mentioned him but then I remembered him being beaten fairly easily by Mao in D3 and then trashing Val's party in D4 despite his group being seemingly much stronger. So I just noted the power level inconsistencies and called it a day.

Out of all of them, I only really know about Laharl and Mao, so it'd have to be one of those two.

Anyway, on a different subject, you guys know that whistling music track that shows up during specific scenes in Disgaea 3? I can deduce it's called "Nomad's Song" since it's the only song in the credits that has a credit for whistling, but for some reason, I can't find that particular song when I look up something like "Disgaea 3 soundtrack nomad's song" on You Tube.

Am I using the wrong terms?

@Mighty Matilda: Honestly, the whole Overlord Prier thing is just one big Continuity Snarl. One moment she's threatening to flood the world in a sea of blood, the next she's worrying about Culotte's safety, and now she claims she has no loved ones left to protect.

Anyone notice that 5 has the most unambiguously heroic cast of the games? We have the clear cut good Killia (Type 2/3 Anti-Hero in the way Valla or Bat Man are) and Usalia. Lamington's inner goodness comes out after he stops being a jerk. Zeroken goes from type 1 anti hero to straight hero. Red Magnus develops into at worst the light side of neutral post character development.

Asagi's appearance doesn't discredit 5 being a prequel for the following reasons.

1. D2 establishes that humans can be affected by the effects of netherworlds on aging rates.

2. Makai Kingdom (due to Zetta's age) seems to imply that the more powerful someone is, the stronger the effect of slowed aging rate. Since real Asagi is powerful enough to hold her ground against Overlords, the effect must be pretty strong on her too.

And Seraphina is there!

But, yeah, they were really going for a traditional good VS evil story in 5.

Wait, Lamington was a playable character?

"Christo's" true name is Lamington. The epiloge spells it out without expllicitly saying it. Being a prequel 7500 years before 1 is the only way the ending makes any sense.

I found them to (barring Seraphina due to being like a mash up of the worst traits of Rozalin, Etna, and Artina minus their redeeming qualities) be quite a likeable and enjoyable cast.

Killia's tale was ultimately a redemption story with a strong Earn Your Happy Ending vibe, something that a lot of people seem to miss. Plus he represents the kind of anti hero that has been SERIOUSLY underrepresented (very heroic morality, unheroic personality) as of late in favor of the "in name only" kind of antihero, which is the kind of character that I'm frankly sick of. Killia being basically the Disgaea counterpart of Riku is Hilarious In Hind Sight given his Japanese VA.

Usalia has quickly become one of my top 3 favorites in the series. Overall likeable personality, a nice arc about confronting her inner self loathing, facing her fears, and in gameplay one of the most unique, challenging but highly rewarding approaches to a tank in any RPG. Though in her case the awesome turns to out right broken at optimal play. Then when you take Lamington's goals into account and her being a major influence in that regard, Usalia is arguably one of the most important character to the series lore.

Red Magnus was easily the funniest character in the cast. Kanji Tang nailed it with him. Him essentially becoming like Terra in motivation (pursuit of power to protect those you care about) is good character development from his old self.

Lamington's comments about it being a sin to manipulate others makes a crap ton of sense given 5 and his status as the Deuteragonist. He was talking about his past self. Several plot twists in 1 and D2 can be neatly explained by the weaknesses of Evangel of Purity

5's story works well because of strong Character Development (except Seraphina) more than anything else, and that's why I liked the game's plot.

I think you meant Fuka instead of Artina, but I think I agree. The fact that her development comes so late (what was the point of putting it right after Killia's?) and is almost treated as a joke really did her no favors.

@Ssj 3 Gojira: Christo is a code name and it's heavily implied that he's really Lamington. His epilogue mentions that many years down the line, he would play a key role in a conflict between the three worlds, most likely referring to the events of Disgaea 1. There is no official source outright stating that he is Lamington, but the implication is there (Helped by the fact that his Japanese voice actor is the same as Lamington and one of his palette swaps has Lamington's colors).

It's more than just that, one of his special attacks has an oddly-shaped effective range that matches Lamington at the end of Disgaea 1, IIRC.

They're basically beating everyone over the head with the implication.

Looks to me like a Minecraft/tactical RPG hybrid. IE, disgaea with changeable terrain.

The character models remind me of Cladun. Maybe a new Cladun or a spinoff?
