Interplay prez Eric Caen says that the Fallout MMO is alive and well and due 2012.

Not to close to December, we hope.

If it gets released on 12-21-12 then I will buy it just because of 1) the humor in that and 2) the balls to release it just a few days before Christmas.

Just so long as there's no elves or dwarves, and a limit of ONE talking tree (you know who.)

Where will this take place: East Coast, or West Coast?

Or will it encompass the whole damn continent?

Also, what are the weapons going to be like?

I am a proud member of the Western Federation's Anti-Japan Media Task Force. My work is very important.

I'd wet my pants if it were the entire continent of North America.

My guess would be that it'll start in the West Coast, and open up more regions expanding eastwards with expansions.

The game takes place in Finland. Suicide rates have dropped dramatically since the war and you're sent to find out why.

Spoiler: It's because everyone is dead and you're a ghost

I'm taking this as confirmation that the game will never make it to the shelves.

I don't know what Project V13 is, but I'm wary of a Fallout MMO. One of Fallout's main draws for me is the ability to make choices in a heavily branching storyline and the turn-based(or more recently, psuedo-turn-based) combat system.

If it's well done, I'd play it forever, but it would have to be absolutely perfect, else it will be ~yawn~ "just another MMO" to me.

Hmm, I guess "cautious optimism" would be the best descriptor I've got right now.

^^ Yeah, it's been unveiled as 'Fallout Online' sometimes ago and they've started the beta subscriptions. Still no new screenshots or anything like that though, just some meager concept arts and news letters. While I'd love for the project to be good and successful (they have some guys like Chris Taylor working on it), I honestly can foresee just two outcomes:

  • game goes vaporware;
  • game gets released more broken than Fallout 2 and closes after a few months.

There are a lot of things I could feel aboout that. But considering that I don't care about MM Os, the only thing I feel is indifference.

I get a feeling that it will be very mreh.

And people WILL be pissed when they can't Kill Em All.

Also, there shouldn't be a lot of people in a post-apocalypse, or oodles of pre-war tech.

But isn't the MMO market one where BIS/Troika/Obsidian's “ship an alpha and then patch it to 1.0 post-release” thing is accepted as standard operating procedure?

Even if it does release, I expect bad things. The biggest problem is conceptual: how do you have resurrection of P Cs in a gritty post apocalyptic setting? Way I see, you either:

1. Have permanent character death. This would kill sales.

2. Give every PC access to some retrotech phlebotinum like cloning chambers. Kills the gritty feel.

3. Handwave the entire issue, characters just come back no explanation, or arbitrarily never get "actually" killed. Kills the gritty feel.

Hell Fallout 2 wasn't totally gritty; there were some bits of absurdity.

Some bits? It was basically Refuge in Audacity: The Game. Which is why its personalized fanbase is larger than that of the one before and the one after combined, at least in this country.

Yeah, that's true. But I think if the Fallout MMO sticks to that principle, gritty but absurd, it'll be decent.

Since when has Fallout been gritty? Darkly humorous, yes. At times horrifying, yes. Gritty? Not really.
