IIRC Loptyr is never explicitly mentioned as an Earth Dragon either. As far as I can tell, the terms Earth Dragon and Dark Dragon are more or less interchangeable given that Medeus is also called one.

Going back to villainous character depth, I think it's more prudent to analyze The Heavy, rather than the draconic/demonic Bigger Bad - I find they're usually the ones with depth. In this respect, I think Hardin and Gangrel have a fair amount of depth (although much of Gangrel's is in his supports), and from the sound of it, so does Lyon. Now, Gharnef and Validar don't have much depth, but Gharnef is very successful, so he has that in his favor...Validar, not so much.

Any others? What about characters like Arvis and Julius?

Oh God! Natural light!

Julius is under Loptyr's control for all the times we see him. Basically he's exactly the same as the Hierophant/Evil Robin from 13.

Alvis is considerably more complex and is worth analyzing.

[up]Arvis definitely is more complex than Julius. Arvis desired a world free of prejudice after witnessing corruption and oppression in Grannvale. A pity all that blew up in his face just because he couldn't keep it in his pants around his half-sister, resulting in her giving birth to a vessel for a racist dragon.

Julius...well, we don't really know much about Julius because by the time we see him, Loptyr basically has him on his strings.

I hear people saying Jugdral has complex villains but I'm not really seeing it. There's Arvis and Ishtar, yeah, but just about everyone else oozes slime from every pore, especially Manfroy. I think Travant is supposed to be sympathetic as well but the game does a pretty bad job at showing that IMO.

Grime's nothing special, this FE universe has actual gods. Plus Naga brought an entire team of Dragons to fight Loptyr.

[up]

Still far more developed then any villain in Awakening. It doesn't speak well that 9 games later after Genealogy, the newest Main Villain is flatter then Manfroy, who had some motivation and personality at least.

RE: Karkat The Dalek

Thats true, but I think the problem was the story was inconsistent on who The Heavy was.

Gangrel was pretty much a Caligula Wannabe, and an Ashnard Expy with no shown redeeming qualities, until you recruit him.

Walhart's Well-Intentioned Extremist Ideas were interesting, but ultimately underutilized.

Validar was a Card-Carrying Villain whose motivation didn't even make any sense, as unlike Manfroy, he doesn't even profit from Grima's resurrection.

The Grimleal as a whole were just Card Carrying Villains with no explanation why, and no sympathetic members at all, while other past evil cults at least had a few sympathetic characters. As it is, Chrom's very briefly mentioned father, had a good point trying to wipe them out.

Grima, well I think RJ Walker, and I already covered most of it, but he's pretty much previous villains with less background or personality. Grima doesn't even stand on his own as unique, the supplemental materials saying he's probably a descendant of the Earth Dragons really doesn't help stand out at all. If they wanted another Earth Dragon baddie again, why not just use Medeus or Loptyr? That way you wouldn't have to make up a character like the first Exalt to oppose him in the past.

I was confused for a moment cause I thought you were talking about Fates and its villain, but you probably meant currently for the west. Cause Fates will have DLC that goes into its backstory.

I just realized something today: Celice, spelled Serisu in kana, is officially translated as Seliph. In Shadow Dragon, Rifu is officially translated as Wrys. This makes me think that the translators just keep confusing the kana for "su" and "fu", which do look kind of similar to each other.

I think the translators like to go for more exotic name. Like Brad becames Aran.

Was thinking. Think it would have better if you had the option to play chapter to chapter, or enable free battles in both versions?

[up][up]Though another chunk might be that Celice sounds rather feminine whereas Seliph is more gender-neutral as a name.

I sure said that!

Doing more of the second part of Future Past. Had Marribelle, Kellam, and Frederick talk to Brady, Inigo, and Owain, Now doing Lissa and Owain.....

Oh man. Owain trying to do his usual justice talk, only to break down in tears is equal parts hilarious, sad, and beautiful all at once.

Edit: And now I've done all the parents and kids meeting the Future's past characters.

Time for part three, and then I'll have done everything in Awakening. After that, I beat the game again, and then restart with a female Avatar.

[up][up]Professionals, especially those who work long hours looking at spreadsheets, make stupid mistakes all the time. Like translating Tales of Phantasia and using Microsoft Office 2003's spellcheck without looking over the replacement words, resulting in "Ragnarok" becoming "Kangaroo".

Honestly, I think they'd be more likely to confuse an S and an f in English, depending on the font (or if it's handwritten).

So, having finished Blazing Sword on a No Restart run with zero deaths, I've decided to now do the same thing for the rest of the series as well (excluding Shadow Dragon, since I don't have that one nor do I have any interest in getting it).

Blazing Sword was never much of a challenge once my units got strong enough. I remember a long time ago Cog of Destiny gave me endless trouble, but this time I breezed right through it. So in the end, this run wasn't as tough as I thought it would be, but it was still fun, plus I enjoy the story and characters quite a bit.

Next up is Sacred Stones, my very first Fire Emblem. For added difficulty I'm not going to use the Tower of Valni or the ruins (can't remember what they're called). No idea how I'm going to level Amelia/Ross/Ewan without it. Maybe they'll just warm the bench.

Out of curiosity, what was everyone else's first Fire Emblem?

Mine was Sacred Stones, too.

Ross and maybe Amelia can probably manage on a no-grind run, as an aside, but Ewan's gonna have a lot of trouble.

I sure said that!

Blazing Sword. I'm kinda grateful Fire Emblem took so long to come to the US, in that respect. Because I usually like to start with the first game in a series if it has at least a medium focus on story, and I don't know if I would have been convinced if I had started with Dark Dragon.
