Thanks for the tips. I will probably watch at least an episode or two of all but Evangeleon; I have heard many bad things about that one.
You hear bad things about Eva because it's popular enough to irritate people, and it got to be that popular by being good. Madoka will probably end up similarly with enough time
The Big O, because it is somewhat noir-ish and one of my favorite animes of all time. The ending is very WTF though.
Wise Papa Smurf, corrupted by his own power. CAN NO LEADER GO UNTAINTED?!You'll probably like Rebuild Of Evangelion, though. The monster design in particular is much more creative in general.
The Revolution Will Not Be TropeableAlright, I should have been more specific. Somebody quite intimately familiar with what will make me not only rage-quit a show, but mutter afterwords for weeks, told me I should never watch Evangeleon. It will take some serious convincing to get me to try it at this point. I didn't hear it was *bad*, I heard that I wouldn't like it.
Keep the suggestions coming, please. I've been considering The Big O, I'll add it to the list. I appreciate everyone coming out to give me a hand here.
If you liked Ghost In The Shell, Ergo Proxy may be interesting to you.
I have to suggest you watch Darker Than Black and Steins Gate.
Both are intelligent sci fi, which tell a good story and certainly have their share of unavoidable tragedy.
You'll also definitely find Fate Zero tragic enough. It's written by the same person who wrote Madoka Magica. No familiarity with the Fate franchise is necessarily required.
"Nullius addictus iurare in verba magistri, quo me cumque rapit tempestas, deferor hospes."I'm looking for an anime that is most importantly Anime First (due to an irrational hatred of adaptations) and is fairly short. I'd also like a story that is fairly serious and decidedly not Slice of Life-ish.
I've read a lot of manga but the only anime I've seen are Code Geass, Madoka Magica, and Gurren Lagann (just because I was wondering what all the fuss was about) and I've enjoyed them all. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
That's... a surprisingly difficult set of criteria. Mononoke, Evangelion, Noein, and Serial Experiments Lain are about all I can think of
I'd say Cowboy Bebop and Big O. They're both quite good.

Wise Papa Smurf, corrupted by his own power. CAN NO LEADER GO UNTAINTED?!Let's go ahead and recommend Flag. It's Better Than It Sounds, though it is quite slow-paced (not really Slice of Life, just slow.)
Princess Tutu too, if you count 26-episode series as short. Again, Better Than It Sounds and starts pretty averagely, but gets much better as it goes on.
That's on top of what has already been recommended.

I'd say the amount of shenanigans involving Mikoto should disqualify that show. The show has lots of drama but also quite a bit of silly humor and school setting stuff probably intended to introduce some levity in an otherwise drama-filled story, though I don't think the two of them work out well.

Throwing in a recommendation for Now And Then Here And There. Also Vision Of Escaflowne, if 26 episodes isn't too long for you.

First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win.@zorbik: It's manga, not anime, but Junji Ito's work should scratch your horror itch.
What's precedent ever done for us?Could someone recommend some Tastes Like Diabetes anime intended for little girls that I can find a decent amount of episodes of on You Tube? Preferably something simple that you don't have to watch in order. I'm sorry, but recently all these creepypastas have really been getting to me.
The answers are 1123, Michael Jackson, that creepy dog downstairs, infinity, Axl Rose, keeps your pants up, and Nethaniel and Superfly.Going by the page on that demographic, my first thought would've been Hamtaro but it seems episodes are hard to find on You Tube. Kirby Of The Stars fares better in that regard.
Why You Tube specifically? You would probably get a number of additional suggestions if not for that one qualification.
Yu hav nat sein bod speeling unntil know. (cacke four undersandig tis)the cake is a lie!Okay, if not You Tube, Daily Motion, or Veoh then something that is on tv. I'm sorry but if it doesn't fit either of those I really can't watch it.

Even if he doesn't, he should have acess to Crunchyroll, and with that, acess to series like Shugo Chara and Yumeiro Patissiere.
Oh, and it seems that there's quite a bit of A Little Snow Fairy Sugar on Youtube (in English dub), so I recommend that. Even if it is technically an Otaku O'Clock shounen, it is so cute a sweet that you would hardly believe it (apart from the fact that there is a bath scene once every episode).

What's Crunchyroll and why do you say it's not allowed in the USA?
I'm about to check out A Little Snow Fairy Sugar it looks like what I'm looking for.

The answers are 1123, Michael Jackson, that creepy dog downstairs, infinity, Axl Rose, keeps your pants up, and Nethaniel and Superfly.Crunchyroll is a subscription-based video-streaming web service focused on anime and East Asian dramas. It is available and legal to use in the US. You can watch for free, but for a monthly fee, you get access to better features such as high definition video. If I'm not wrong, paying members can also get early access to certain shows which are simulcasted or uploaded faster compared to a traditional television network.
Because of licensing issues, certain countries may not have access to some of the shows on Crunchyroll, although I'm pretty sure you Americans get almost all of it, if not the entire catalogue.
