I suppose it would be wrong of me to mention Now And Then Here And There?
First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win.Thank you guys, but I already know El Hazard and Now and then, Here and there (God, when I started watching the latter I thought it was a normal adventure shonen. I was wrong, the anime was gut-wrenching, especially when the poor girl was raped. I really didn't saw that coming. Still it was a series worth watching, although I can't bring myself to watch it again).

Aura Battler Dunbine would fit the bill if you like mecha, though it kinda suffers from being horribly outdated. There's a more recent OVA spinoff, but I haven't watched it yet.
Okay recommend me something I can show to my sister. She's 20, has fairly mainstream tastes, but lately has been expressing discontent with how predictable television and movies are, to the point where she is even interested in watching subtitled movies from other countries.
Also, she really doesn't seem to think guy on guy is hot and she probably doesn't have an understanding of the Animation Age Ghetto. She did like Princess Mononoke, but that was a while ago. I managed to get her to read the first Haruhi Suzumiya novel too, and she didn't seem to hate it.
An anime would be preferable, and one that isn't too long.
Opinions would be helpful.

"Nullius addictus iurare in verba magistri, quo me cumque rapit tempestas, deferor hospes."If your sister has fairly mainstream tastes, she might find the gratuitous violence in Baccano! a bit off-putting.
I might be a bad judge of mainstreamy-ness. :P
Umm. Read Or Die? Last Exile?

The Revolution Will Not Be TropeableEh, how should I say this... I haven't watched a quite a lot of anime (about 150 titles) but I think even if I did, it's a rather difficult request. Off the top of my head, the ones that are mainstream are predictable and the ones that aren't predictable are unkind to mainstreamers.
Steins;Gate, perhaps? The art is kinda wonky but it's a solid sci-fi story nonetheless.
I was honestly thinking Baccano myself too. It's really not any more gratuitously violent than 300, which my sister is a fan of. She also likes the X-men or more specifically Wolverine. I've never seen her watch a romance movie beyond Twilight, which she now snubs for being too different to the books.
So... Yeah I think the main thing would be to not have a premise that alienates newcomers to anime. Also I'm leaning towards a dub, because again, they're easier for newcomers to get into.
Steins Gate is a good idea, and I honestly think a premise like "time travel done well" could interest her, but it kinda takes a while to get there, so I suspect it's.org a good thing to start with.
"Nullius addictus iurare in verba magistri, quo me cumque rapit tempestas, deferor hospes."What kind of 'mainstream' works does your sister like? If you give some examples, I might be able to think of anime that resemble them.
First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win.Scrubs, How I Met Your Mother, The Simpsons, South Park, Avatar The Last Airbender, The Lion King, things with Hugh Jackman in them (X Men in particular), things with Hip-Hop in them, things with Johnny Depp in them (in particular Pirates Of The Caribbean), Doctor Who (possibly due to my influence), Avatar, Twilight (books only and she hates undead characters).
I honestly think she'd watch almost anything if it was good. Her standards are even lower for things airing on TV (laziness mostly).

"Nullius addictus iurare in verba magistri, quo me cumque rapit tempestas, deferor hospes."So, sounds like there's a preference for comedies
I think the default recs here are Azumanga and Ouran
If she likes things involving Hip-Hop, then why not Samurai Champloo? I can't say anything for it myself, but it has Hip-Hop and is generally well regarded, so I think that might be worth a try.
My standard Anime Theme song game variant rules: [Censored by ACTA]Give Air Gear a try. It's largely a comedy in the early stuff, and has a sort of hip hop style.
[Placeholder for something snarky]Seconding Samurai Champloo.
Maybe also Great Teacher Onizuka?
First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win.Hello Guys: Long time lurker, first-time poster.
I'm kind of new to the anime scene, but I find myself wanting to dig deeper into the art form and find a new show that really grabs me. Here's what I've seen and loved so far: Neon Genesis Evangeleon; FLCL; Cowboy Bebop; Samurai Champloo; Trigun; Berserk; Paranoia Agent; Kon's Film Work (Perfect Blue, Paprika, Millenium Actress, etc);
I've also seen and mostly enjoyed FMA and Elfen Lied.
I'm drawn to the weird, darker stuff, mostly. If anyone has any recommendations, please let me know! Thanks.

Off the tope of my head, I think you may like Madoka Magica, Haibane Renmei, Mononoke, and Bakemonogatari
Jinrui Wa Suitai Shimashita is an Anime from this season that is definetly weird (Surreal Humor type of weird) and dark as in a Crapsaccharine World.
Seconding Bakemonogatari.
Thirding Bakemonogatari.
Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni would also be a good recommendation IMO.

"Strategy? Spacing? I just keep punching until I hit something." - Sol BadguyI'll suggest Baccano. While I would not say this about much else, make sure you watch the dub if possible.
Bigotry will NEVER be welcome on TV Tropes.Seconding Mononoke and Madoka Magica, especially given the list of shows you enjoyed.
Hello everyone!
Like Stokesty, I'm a fresh green newbie to the anime scene, but some of my dorm roommates have dragged me through some shows I've really enjoyed and wouldn't mind having something to get me through the summer once I finish Deadwood and Rome. Some things to work with:
I loved, loved, loved, loved: Mouryou No Hako
I loved: Madoka Magica, Another, Ghost In The Shell
I liked: Cowboy Bebop, Bakemonogatari, Paprika
I didn't mind: Baccano!
I didn't like: Full Metal Alchemist, Samurai Champloo
Without specific regard to anime, I don't like goofy comedy, I don't particularly like being treated like a pedophile (Bakemonogatari notwithstanding), I like my stories to be on more the cynical end of the sliding scale in general, I love Film Noir and Tragedy, I enjoy (well-made) horror (HP Lovecraft is my favorite), I really like cyberpunk and science-fiction in general - I am a particular fan of William Gibson and Robert A Heinlein.
I will watch anime for the art, but not for the action. I will email a beer or a cookie (your choice) to anyone who gives me some solid recommendations!
(Edited to help minimize some serious readability issues)

Thank you, now I have some good mangas/animes to spent my time with. I understand that there are many Light Novels which would fit my description but I'm somewhat reluctant to read them due to my limited English and because they are probably difficult to find/order. But I might now give it a try later.
