That sounds like a decent explanation to me. Making it harder so the Professors get less "competition", so to speak.

Than whatare the jusyificstions for nomstarters with said ratios. You cant jusy turn expkanstions on and off, you have to be consistant. Why nit use the cave of dragonflies explsnstion?

That N-1 lines share the same evolutionary gender ratio, Ability or whatever does not mean that N lines share ir for the same reason. If the temperatures average to just that right gender ratio (why would it work like that for Torchic and Cyndaquil, anyway?) then it can be half the explanation. As for the Cave of Dragonflies theory on gender determination, I personally like it, but it relies too much on the technicall implementation of the mechanic - any future generation can blast it as easy as introducing just one new mon.

Are they really rare in-universe, though?

Why would the professors have any interest in keeping them that way?

I guess as a balancing mechanism? The starters are chosen because they are ideal partners for trainers, and having too many would cheapen that.

The fire/water/grass thing works well for beginners. Bo in and out of universe.

The world is far bigger than the rather small minority of beginning trainers who get their first Pokemon from a professor (or even just according to a theme), though.

And do any canons even imply they are, in fact, especially rare?

and even if they can be caught wild, the wild ones probably don't make for as good starters as the ones raised for that purpose.

A fair point is that yes, starters delivered as Starters are bred and trained for that purpose. For that matter, they wouldn't necessarily be the 15 Fire/Water/Grass families only, but also theoretically apply to starters and mons passed down by family heritage, as at least two anime episodes (one related to Brock) suggest.

The anime and manga have wild starter lines, though they are more or less implied to be scarce, or hard to find (early Johto at least; dunno about early Unova). Or particular note, starters in the games are not delivered only as Starters but also as gifts or plot prizes.

"Oh, good. Umbramatic is about to settle this thing." Sorta appropriate.

Still busy with Real Life holiday stuff, but I'm still getting Thundurus work in, and I think the paste will be up tomorrow. For now, since nobody currently seems to have any more suggestions on it, I'm putting Tornadus on the wiki - I figure the shorter length is acceptable since there's not much we know about these guys yet.

Also, I claimed Golett, and I'm thinking about doing Poochyena and/or Shroomish soon, since I haven't done anything for Gen. 3 yet.

I finally started White, but I've totally forgotten how to evenly create and level up a balanced team, which is as weird as it is embarassing.

The Thundurus entry looks pretty good - seems like it mainly just needs links to tropes.

For the destruction of Milos Island, you might want to reference the Long Island Express

[up] References to that for Tornadus/Thundurus rampages would be cool. I'l have to find a way to edit that into both of their articles.

[up][up][up] I'm torn over whether to do the same. I like how he's Cherbanog right now, but that Skyrim reference in the article is so tempting... Damn you, Sullen. Damn you and your awesome reference.

Speaking of which, you gonna incorporate the ones I reccomended? Not that they compare to that...

EDIT: V2 of Thundurus paste: http://pastebin.tropi.us/8c . Still needs suggestions.

Though now that I think about it Dialga would probably be a closer reference to Alduin.
