What interesting things have you only recently learned about?
To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.
So, what interesting things have you guys...and gals...only recently learned about?

- The Baltimore CityLink has its own designated bus lanes on select streets, as well as its own office.
- There are a bunch of halal carts scattered throughout the University of Maryland campus.
- The highly popular fidget spinners were originally meant to act as a stimulant for people with ADHD.

Cat allergies can develop any time during a person's life. Learned that one the hard way when I developed a cat allergy in my late 20s. :(
In fact, all allergies can develop at any time. I once took a 911 call for a 50-something patient who had taken penicillin for infections all their life, whose throat suddenly started swelling about 30 minutes after their first dose for an infection...Oh, Crap!
(She got better. Thank goodness.)
Just the opposite for me. When I was 4, my aunt gave me a cat. The first night I had him, he slept in my bed, and I woke up with my eyes so swollen that I literally could not open them. But when I was 7, I adopted an orphaned cat that I found in my garage, and neither she nor any other cat I've had since have bothered my allergies at all.
My mom was lactose intolerant when she was a child, but she somehow developed a tolerance for it.
A protein called Sonic hedgehog (SSH) is responsible for growing fingers during the prenatal stage. Supposedly, the researcher named it as such because his kids were playing a lot of Sonic the Hedgehog at the time, and it fits in with the Theme Naming of the proteins in the mammalian signaling pathway family, the others being desert hedgehog (DHH) and Indian hedgehog (IHH) - which are named after existing species. These proteins are called hedgehogs because they were first discovered by fruit fly researchers who thought their spiky appearance looked like a hedgehog.

This account is dead. I’ve said a lot of dumb things in the past and I wish to forget them. I’m sorry if I’ve ever hurt anyone. The color orange was named for the fruit, not the other way around.
Huh. I never really thought about that until now.
No "Bowser's Fury" questions please. I haven't played it yet. They actually did find the waffle iron used to make the sole prototype for the Nike Waffle Trainer.
Why would you bury a waffle maker? At least that questionable decision had an beneficial outcome.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotThe giant otter hunts caimans & anacondas.
Peace is the only battle worth waging. My sister's cat died last night.
I'm so sorry.
Oh. Shit.
Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.I'm terribly sorry to hear that. :(
I like to keep my audience riveted.Jessica Simpson has not released any music since her failed foray into country music in 2008.
Age of Ultron has a higher Metacritic score than Deadpool.
Peace is the only battle worth waging.Today is the 31st anniversary of Deigo Maradona's "Hand of God" and "Goal of the Century" against England in the 1986 World Cup quarterfinal.
It is also the 48th anniversary of the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland being on fire.

Artist Jeff Koons let go of half of his staff.
The directors of The Matrix are trans.
"Rarity, are you okay? We gotta get you and your friends outta here soon!"Weird Al is getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!
That is still bizarre to me. What are the chances that any two siblings would both be trans? Couple that with the fact that they're celebrities, and (formerly) commonly referred to as "the Wachowski brothers", and you have one hell of a coincidence.
That's great!
Stefan Karl (aka Robbie Rotten)'s cancer has been diagnosed as terminal. :(
No "Bowser's Fury" questions please. I haven't played it yet.Other people who are getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame are Minnie Mouse, Zoe Saldana, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Never really cared for that meme, if I'm honest, but that's still sad to hear
simple asHalf this and half the History Thread. Apparently, some people say that Shakespeare wrote in Middle English.

My CD collection is so huge that I unknowingly accumulated over a hundred duplicates.
