What interesting things have you only recently learned about?

To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.

There is a conspiracy theory that Finland does not exist

Of course it exists! Those stupid conspiracy theories are from Cloudcuckoolanders.

The non-existence of Finland is a bit of a in-joke on Reddit actually.

You know, I'm starting to regret having posted that fact about the Islamic fasting plus the one about ABBA, because they led indirectly to these unnecessary political stuff about Finland/Scotland/Sweden/etc. Let's talk about less stressful things, please.

I actually found that whole "finland vs sweden" conversation to be quite interesting.

I don't think we mentioned any current political issue, IIRC, so it's not as if there's going to be an argument or anything.

Sorry for derailing everything to be about Finland, though. I do that a lot. (Someone has to keep up the facade for the conspiracy to work.)

Headcanon that Finland is actually a SUPER big home for all the people Sweden doesn't want to admit they're Swedish.

The subreddit about this posits that people who think they live in Finland are actually living in Sweden, Estonia, and Russia. That just makes me wonder why Estonia isn't made up, too, because their language and culture are very close to ours and very different from almost all of the rest of Europe. It's kind of freaky that when they decided to invent the Finnish language and culture, they made it like that of a weird country with a fifth of Finland's population, rather than making Finland resemble Sweden or Russia. Maybe that's just to make it more plausible, or something.

According to the United States Copyright Office, works created by a non-human are not subject to US copyright. Maybe if can I claim to be a sentient shade of blue when I write and publish something, people can actually make money off fanfic of it. Doubt that'll ever happen, though.

Best Of - could we not say the same for Hungary? I mean, they do speak a Finno-Ugric language... assuming they exist.

(Which is actually my thing I didn't know until recently - that Hungarian is actually part of a wider grouping, and mostly gets ignored because it is in some ways different enough it may not be)

[up]The language stuff would apply about Hungary, too, but I didn't mention it because Finland is allegedly close to Estonia and bigger than it. Hungary is much bigger and more important than Finland, so in a sense it might make more sense to fake Finland based on it than it would to create it based on little Estonia.

Colorado now produces an artisanal vodka that is fermented and distilled with hemp. This is, quite possibly, the most Coloradan thing that has ever happened.

I wonder how hemp vodka tastes? Grain vodka is good. Potato vodka is good. Rye and bison grass vodka is good. They're all good in different ways. So I'm assuming that hemp vodka would be good? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'd think three is a rather small sample size on the quality of vodka to extrapolate from, especially as none of the others involve plants that produce THC.

Jimmy Barnes's voice is even more powerful in person than on CD. It's like being sung at by a jet engine.

Also, funnel cake is a thing and it looks like...a mass of twisty pretzels? I'm not sure I understood the picture.
