What interesting things have you only recently learned about?
To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.
So, what interesting things have you guys...and gals...only recently learned about?

I'm fine with art though not great, provided I'm not expected to trace (though I've gotten better at it), copy something in front of me, or use stencils, for drawing. I'm also half decent but not particularly talented at calligraphy I also only know one type. Unless I have a route memorized or clear written instructions I will get lost.
The programs put in place to take advantage of the Colorado River were done based on measurements from unusually wet years.

"We're home, Chewie."Is that pronounced like Hastings, England?

My parents refer to any English colloquialisms they can't understand as "negro English". I wish I was making this up.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotThat if I pause at "golden mean f" in the google search bar it gives the calculated result of "= -16.87887 degrees Celsius".
You must agree, my plan is sheer elegance in its simplicity! My TumblrI been on the computer for so long, apparently my type speed has sky-rocketed without me knowing it! Someone had to point it out to me!
I always find that quite cool. Just by naturally being computer-literate, my wpm has skyrocketed from about 70 wpm when I was 12, to about 110 wpm now.
A better example would be the keyboard on my phone. When I first got this phone, I typed very slowly and made many spelling errors. But now I can type very accurately and very quickly without having to look at the keys that often.

There was a shit ton of massive volcanic eruptions all across the western US a few million years ago.
I think one of those would be my preferred apocalypse if the end of the world has to come soon.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonWhen that happens, I hope I'm living on a floating house.
If that comes to pass I would just move to another continent, while checking the USGS webcams every minute or so.'
Volcanoes are cool.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonIn other words, the key to avoiding over-population and surviving natural disasters isn't to migrate to another planet. It's to invent floating homes that are just like 1000 feet above the surface or so.
I don't really see how that would work, but still a cool idea.
Still love me some big volcanoes. Just evacuate everyone first.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonIsn't Mount Saint Helens supposed to erupt sometime?
Peace is the only battle worth waging.According to the USGS website Mount Saint Helens is currently on Normal alert level. It is the most active of the major Cascade volcanoes, though. It seems to be decently quiet right now.
I was thinking of Yellowstone or higher eruptions.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonYellowstone is some time off being erupted from what we can judge - while it's had certain gaseous indicators, those are only one thing, and we likely would have about four indicators before it goes.
"Did you expect somebody else?"I know about Yellowstone. I actually find it really funny about how people are scared of Yellowstone and think it will erupt soon. All activity is normal and we are, contrary to popular belief, not overdue for an eruption, and even if we were, volcanoes don't operate on a schedule.
I think if anyone expresses how they think Yellowstone is going to blow soon with no real evidence to back them up I will link them to the YVO webpage.

My navigation is the one of the few 'visual intellects' I am good with, because I can usually find where I am easily and plan a route well enough. This has though come from experience where others have never improved from such.
You probably could make me a ship's captain after some training, but I could never do calligraphy well, or art much.
