What interesting things have you only recently learned about?
To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.
So, what interesting things have you guys...and gals...only recently learned about?

Which I assume will just become a new name for things which aren't even vaguely obsessive compulsive.
I'm going to go with Intrusive Thoughts Ruining My Fucking Life Disorder. That way no one can misuse the term.
I'm so sorry that my avatar doesn't appear fully in the shot, but the cat was threatening the photographer.I believe the term was "euphemism treadmill"
I didn't know migraine could cause mood change and major discomfort after the pain. I wanted to flip the table at my school. Apparently this had happened before with the piano class.
On the lethal dose thingy earlier on, there's actually something similar for water. Drink too much of it and you can get "Hyponatremia" which this site here:
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/strange-but-true-drinking-too-much-water-can-kill/
defines as ""a word cobbled together from Latin and Greek roots, translates as "insufficient salt in the blood.""
I'm sticking to beer, thanks. It can still kill me, but it tastes so much better in the process.
My sister knows her booze. She has hard cider, vodka, and margaritas in her fridge.
My first thought was "didn't you used to freak out on me when I would have ONE beer?!?"
It seems that a lot of people have minor dyslexia and like to read "NASA" as "NSA"
I have the same problem, just inverted.
The thing covering an AC vent is called a "register."
Blog linkBut beer tastes a lot worse, and can kill you faster...
i think i mostly want to see what happens when this whole place breaks apartSaoirse Ronan was in Robot Chicken, of all things. This sketch, to be exact:
According to IMDB, she's Merida, Aurora and Jasmine. And yes, I checked the actual credits of the episode just to be sure.
Looking for some stories? That's not uncommon. I remember when the NSA scandal first broke out and a bunch of people were wondering why NASA was trying to collect our data to send to aliens or something.
"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerIf it wernt for the little Ice age, the world would be completely different. For starters, there would be no drought in the Low Countries, and thus less incentive for the 80 years war. This may have allowed Spain to successfully conquer England and France. And that's only Western Europe
Although if the situation with the Duke Philip the Good were different, we may have ended up with a Kingdom of England, France and Wales.

Merry-Go-Round Broken Down?
'All he needs is for somebody to throw handgrenades at him for the rest of his life...'There was a 6.1 MW earthquake near my town this morning. I felt nothing.
Marijuana is dioecious.
You in California? The 6.0 earthquake was there. And even though you may not have felt anything, it was apparently enough to topple several buildings and get people rushing outside.
Central California, to be percise. The earthquake made some empty fast food contains come crashing down on me when I open the cabinet.
I learned today why Mario stopped throwing up the V-Sign after the N64 era. Something about Miyamoto not wanting the pose to become associated with him, and thinking it looked childish.
Which is a shame, since I did associate it with Mario. It was like a trademark and gave him a bit more personality.
Weird in a Can (updated M-F)Read more about criminal laws. It is not in my area of study, but
I mentioned the whole manslaughter thing a few month back. Didn't notice this little snippet of information. Would NASA be (theoretically) charged in accordance with criminal negligence manslaughter or the cause above? Twice? Someone tried to sue them under the former charge.
Are there works with crime fighting heroes that focuses on criminal law, by any chance?
Edit: it seems that there is a paper about it and cite it as an example of NASA's corruption. They put it as white collar crime, which includes piracy, which is managed by the FBI, which is why piracy is a federal offense. This is getting interesting. I am sold.

To me it's just 'V for Vicotry' I never associated it with Mario. Though I do remember Mario doing it alot.
I mostly associate Mario with his odd twirling jumps and of course "It's a-me Mario."
Not dead, just feeling like it.So NASA was corrupt enough to avoid a verdict of manslaughter ?
A new name for OCD is being pondered because of how much OCD is associated with things which barely even resemble really being obsessive compulsive.
