If the Philippines finally appears in Axis Hetalia Powers...

Any idea what the Philippines would look like?

I think the Philippines will be the Butt-Monkey or the Chew Toy due to its history. Or maybe even the Bunny-Ears Lawyer due to its reputation of sending its citizens abroad to earn money for their families and pay the needed taxes.

What are other opinions?

I think there are a few more relevant countries that have yet to appear before the Philippines.

That wasn't a nice thing to say to the guy from the Philippines. And I'd say it out to be a really cute Filipino girl.

I don't read this manga, but does Vietnam have a character?

Historically speaking, the Philippines were important in the Pacific theater of WWII, which is what the comic is about ...Or So I Heard (WWII I mean). But at the time, they were a US protectorate. EDIT sorry, territory.

Vietnam has appeared in some sketches on the creator's blog, but she hasn't shown up in the actual series. I don't know enough about the Philipines to figure out what kind of character he or she would be.

How about Australia? Is there a list somewhere so that I can avoid suggesting duplicates?

The comic is mostly about Europe, right? Or at least the "West".

Turns out there's a wiki for it. Am I actually surprised? No, no I'm not. Edit, to not totally ignore the other part of your post: the focus is mainly on European countries. Japan (naturally) and China are the other two with major parts. Most others just have designs and no parts, or have only had one minor strip, etc.

For the lazy: Australia is in the same situation as Vietnam; he has a design but hasn't shown up yet.

The Wiki Rule. I should have known.

Well, that looks pretty encompassing, but I'm curious as to why there doesn't seem to be much emphasis on the Pacific Theater. Or do I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Hmm, I wouldn't know. I do know the focus has never been on battles except for the odd serious strip, and those always take place earlier in the timeline; random trivia and country relations

 * get more screen time. Maybe there just wasn't anything interesting enough to make gags out of? Who knows. Also, if Italy wasn't involved, chances are it isn't getting a strip, seeing as he's the main character, or the closest this series gets to one.

I'd probably say that the Philippines would be something like America's little sister or something to that effect (yeah history says America was an onii-chan to us Filipinos then he did that Heel–Face Turn in helping us get set for self-governance)

And then Japan comes along, but with the massive number of Animanga fans (such as myself) from the Philippines, that's all water under the bridge now, isn't it? smile

Well, considering the opinions I've seen of other asians' opinions of Imperial Japan. The creator really can't too put a lot of emphasis on the Imperial Japan without angering a lot of asians. Considering I had a grand uncle that survived the Bataan Death March and three months at a Japanese POW camp, I understand why the other asians might get really annoyed.

Putting non-ASCII characters in link URLs breaks them. Vanilla characters only, sorry.

uh, I'm not sure if you ever heard of the Philippine-American War. I do find the idea of being a little sister to the US a bit disquieting.

Then again how do you find a character that fits this, ''400 years in a convent, 50 years in Hollywood." Plus it was province of New Spain for about 200 years.

You can only use ASCII characters in link URLs. No accents or non-Latin characters or anything.

She could be a little sister that America is mean to. Maybe they're not actually related, but America forcibly "adopted" her. And it's a comic about the Axis, if people aren't offended by that than I don't see the problem with the Philippines thing.

Oh, but people are offended by this thing. In fact, the reason the anime didn't get on TV was because the South Koreans petitioned to keep it off the air. So it's online instead. Which is funny, because South Korea was never even going to show up (and certainly won't now).

There have been cases of countries living with another country both by choice and not, so that sort of relationship between America and the Philippines wouldn't be anything new.

Umm, I don't mean to be rude, but that's exactly why I put the words Heel–Face Turn there.

Sure, the Fil-Am War did happen, but after that, we eventually became allied to America. In fact, most of our past Presidents' actions post WW-II involved America in one way or another.

Why do you think our current President is trying to kiss Obama's ass right now so much?

In case you haven't figured it out yet, I am from the Philippines, so I know exactly what I'm talking about.

EDIT: I'm not even going to touch on the 400+ years of colonization that we were under Spain; this is purely about the potential representation of the relationship between America and the Philippines as Moe Anthropomorphisms in Hetalia.

but America forcibly "adopted" her

True that, but most of our leaders became extremely enamored with them pre-WW-II, such that it all carried over to post WW-II.

I recall one of our past Presidents insisting that Filipino soldiers be deployed in Vietnam to "help America out."

I rest my case on the forcibly adopted Imouto.

eh, don't get too offended on what I say, 'cuz I'm by nature more of a Chaotic Neutral. Being an annoying git is part of the deal.

I don't know what region you live in, but my mom jokes that my dad's side of the family has Tagalog headhunters as ancestors. So I kind of favor a more savage personification.

So am I in the minority in thinking the Philippines would be male?

I think of him as having really messy hair and a large collection of cooking utensils, for some reason.

When does a country get represented as female, anyway? Or is it pretty much random or something?

This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...

Yeah, Thailand or Brazil. tongue And both equally offensive, I suppose.

Over at Deviantart I found pics of APH characters basically doing Peter Pan as a play. I should dig up the link, if nothing else than Japan forced into the role of Tiger Lily is hilarious...

Also, funny APH anecdote.

You see, I was browsing /y/, and there was a Hetalia thread. Someone posted a Japan/France picture, and someone replied "Why is Japan topping France, is it just the artist, or is there some history I'm unaware of?"

the statement above is false
