Even so, someone as smart as Yue wouldn't even need to study. Arguably, she's already above high school level as she is. I have a hard time believing she wouldn't have learned most of what is taught at school (except maybe Math) by just compulsively reading around for fun.
That's a good point. It would make sense if she was below average, but one of the Baka Rangers is a bit extreme for someone who reads as much as she does.
Dunno… maybe she doesn't read the kind of books that they need to study for school. Or maybe she only sucks at Negi's subject.
Ow, that's a pity. She and Negi seem to have a cute dynamic for the little I've seen. Especially since she's the only actual girl of his age he interacts with.

Anya was annoying, and I'm glad she left the focus as quickly as she entered it.
Lyendith:
- Well, unless Touta or his parents were adopted by the Konoe's, we know he was descended from Konoka. I don't think she had any siblings. That doesn't really answer your question, though.
- If UQ Holder lasts another... forty five? years, then yes, you might see Chao.
- I get 'wind broken' when I try to translate poussif. Do you mean they're awkward and overly lengthy? Inorganically placed into the story?
- Cocone is a little special, yeah. She doesn't really matter, though. Not a robot.
- Kissing isn't the only way to make a pactio. In fact, since Albireo is a book, I'm not sure how that would really work.
- Someone as smart as Yue should not get failing grades no matter how little she studies. I'm pretty sure she's supposed to be smarter than me and suffice to say I did not get anywhere near failing grades on tests for any class without ever having studied in my life.
- Akamatsu would have to take that geography class first.
- Don't get your hopes up for Anya.

If you like fanfics, mine stars her/Shameless Self-Promotion But yeah, it's kind of a pity that she was just shoved out of the spotlight. Still, "Who's Anya?" jokes are very funny to me (speaking of which, did that ever get listed under Memetic Mutation?), so at least I got that out of it.
Well, even highly intelligent people can struggle with certain subjects. I may not be as smart as Yue, but I did study and have an M Sc and I failed French and once got minus seventy percent on an Afrikaans assignment. ... Admittedly, my school's Afrikaans department was insane, but still.
I see Yue's case as not having enough personal drive. She's definitely smart enough, but she doesn't care enough to apply the necessary effort.
...Then again, I knew a kid in one high school class who slept through every class, refused to read the book, and still got every question right in every test, so maybe I can't exactly talk.
And yeah, kissing is not the only way to Pactio, but I believe it's mentioned as the easiest way (the only other way I can vaguely remember involved some kind of blood pact).
Blood pact thing has never been confirmed. But yes, kissing's been confirmed to be the easiest.
It has been confirmed (through author's notes) that two vampires can do it using each others' blood and two nuns can do it in a ritual involving exchanging rosaries.
It's heavily implied that every method requires a demonstration of trust.

That's… technically not impossible. Since almost the entire main cast is immortal anyway. Although a 50 year time-jump would be quite brutal… or Akamatsu can Retcon Chao to be a 50 year-old immortal or something.
Err… something like that, yeah, at least for the first two. It just didn't flow very well.
A book… —'.`— I guess I shouldn't be surprised by now.
Indeed. Isn't the distinction between England/Great Britain/United Kingdom/British Isles one of the first things one learns in junior high English class, anyway?
edited 30th Jul '14 2:57:57 AM by Lyendith
Depends where you live. Here, that distinction would be taught in Geography, while English classes are purely for the language.
Then again, Igirisu (derived from Portuguese Inglez) is actually used in Japanese to refer to Great Britain / the United Kingdom, so having the Japanese characters (and the British-born character who speaks fluent Japanese) use that term in that manner is quite plausible and shouldn't be surprising. That the translators (official or unofficial) didn't understand/know that little fact and adapt their translations accordingly is honestly their fault, not Akamatsu's.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Yyyep… I suspected it was something like that… because going by the bonus pages at the end of volume 20, it's obvious Akamatsu did quite a lot of research on the region, so… yeah, it's the translator who is at fault here. My bad, Akamatsu!
Volume 19-20!
- Asuna's real name sounds like one she couldn't remember even if she got back her memories…
- By the way, it's a trivial detail, but does Asuna look Japanese? Considering her full name is very not-Japanese and she's supposed to look like the Welsh Nekane… unless Nekane is of Japanese descent herself… or everyone simply looks "Manganese" in Negima's world, which is more likely.
- Konoka and Setsuna, Les Yay level: maximum.
- Man, I really love these little spotlight chapters. It's good to see Mana's more quirky side, yet still in line with the character. 2000 yens is surprisingly cheap for age-changing pills though.
- … wait a minute, 1800 yens… 13€ for a cinema ticket? And we complain about 8€ tickets in France… ò.Ô
- Ah, Sayo meets with the other decorative character of the class, Zazie. That one is still a walking question mark, but she probably won't remain so for much longer. I hope. Actually I'm affraid she will…
- A bit surprised about Yūna's father, although I never really cared about Yūna herself.
- So Evangeline is Piccolo now? On one hand I would have liked to see more of Asuna's survival techniques, but on the other hand, I'm glad that training session didn't drag on. And Asuna taking levels in badass is always enjoyable.
- Evangeline A.K. McDowell, tsundere level: still at the maximum.
- What, we did have a few chapters focused on Anya after all. That's already fine with me. In the end she's your classical Tsundere Fiery Redhead Clingy Jealous Girl but well, I still like their relationship. She just needs to realize that it's not unusual to be flat when you're freaking 11.
- For rivals in love, Yue and Nodoka sure don't compete that much… the polygamy solution might be the right one with these two after all.
- Paru didn't really stand out to me at first, but I'm starting to really like her recently, for some reason… since she has her artifact I think.
- Super-tight security! At this rate, poor Ayaka will end up the last person in the campus to not know about Negi or magic.
- Ah Fate… I hadn't seen him for, what, 14 volumes?
- That… doesn't look like the kind of wound Konoka can heal easily… damn you, inventor of the cliffhanger.
Donet McGuiness is a traitor, I call it. Just cause.
edited 31st Jul '14 11:39:01 AM by Lyendith
Donet is never even shown or mentioned again. A fair warning, this happens to a fucking lot of characters here.
... I could've sworn we got a glimpse of Donet sometime near the end of the Magic World arc.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. You probably are thinking of Touko or Shakti.
Asuna's unusual appearance is actually a plot point, so I guess that she doesn't look Japanese.
It probably got chalked up to her having non-Japanese blood at some point in her ancestry; it's not exactly that rare in Japan, IIRC, though they usually suffer from discrimination, especially if their hair color is not the typical dark colors for a Japanese person, leading them to be often treated as if they were delinquents who bleach/dye their hair even though it's their natural color.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. Those are people who ignore a very obvious robot in their classroom. Asuna could have purple hair and red eyes and nobody would notice anything weird with it.
I don't think anyone does comment on Asuna's appearance. Not even the eyes.
I guarantee that, at the very least, Ayaka brought up the eyes at some point early on.
It's worth mentioning that when Chisame, the most lampshade-observing cast member and the only one who thinks the robot is weird, thinks about the obviously foreign students in the class, Asuna isn't amongst those she thinks about (maybe because it'd be a tacit admission she also looks foreign?)
Yeah, she could hardly mention the red hair, now could she?
Yeah, because self-incrimination and all.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. The only hair color reserved for foreigners is blond. Everything else is natural.
This.
Also, you don't have too much longer to wait for more Anya (not that you'll get as much of her as it looks like you will. It's a joke in the fandom that no one remembers who Anya is) I also rally like her since writing an AU staring her ... which I really need to get back to.
