This thread is for quick questions. A "quick question" is a question which has a relatively quick, generally factual answer; a question which is not likely to inspire an extended discussion.
e.g.
Quick Question: How tall is an average ten-year-old boy?
Not a Quick Question: Why are Americans obsessed with guns?
Quick Question: Why is ALS sometimes called Lou Gehrig's Disease? Who was Lou Gehrig?
Not a Quick Question: In Alan Dean Foster's Thranx Commonwealth series, is Pip a Mary Sue?
Get the idea?

With the launching of Xeno Nucleic Acid (which includes examples of species with DNA arranged in helices of more than two strands), and being aware of the phenomenon of polyploidy (which I've just added to the real-life folder), I've been wondering... How should I go about asking for examples of fictional races/creatures that are described as being polyploid as a way to give them Xeno Nucleic Acid-type Bizarre Alien Biology? Should I make a thread for it in Trope Talk?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. Why do people get morning breath?
Jawbreakers on sale for 99¢Wikipedia says that it's due to breakdown of proteins into amino acids, which themselves break down further into foul-smelling gaseous substances.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. What happened to "You know that thing where?"
It's now named the Trope Launch Pad. It's the same thing under a different name.
Why is Lawrence v. Texas named like this while other case name a state official as the defendant (as in Roe v. Wade, Obergefell v. Hodges)?

Worldbuilding is fun, writing is a choreBecause in that case, the state of Texas was named as the defendant, while in others specific individuals were.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThat doesn't answer my question. Why was the state itself named as a defendant when the common procedure seems to be to name an official (usually the governor) as a defendant on behalf of the state?
Worldbuilding is fun, writing is a choreDifference between suing unambiguous state law and suing someone using ambiguous law against you?
Fresh-eyed movie blogIn what context is "cannon" pluralized as "several cannons", and when is it just "several cannon"?
I would say it's when you're talking about specific cannons rather than "a whole lot of cannon".
You would talk about five hairs, but a scalp is just full of hair, not hairs.
Fresh-eyed movie blogI've never heard of "cannon" being both singular and plural.
Yes, "hair" can be a mass noun but "cannon" cannot.
Worldbuilding is fun, writing is a choreI've heard it in places like a ship's captain saying "They'll feel the sting of our cannon".
Several respectable English dictionaries would like to disagree with you on that.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.According to the usage notes for the word on Wiktionary: "The unchanged plural is preferred in Great Britain and Ireland, while North Americans and Australians tend to use the regular plural cannons."
Why is Smug Anime Wendy's a meme?
Jawbreakers on sale for 99¢Because Wendy's corporate Twitter account became popular for the snarky replies they'd give to people heckling them (this particular exchange◊ was probably the first major part of the meme), an artist tweeted these pictures and their drawing with smug anime girl Wendy with a shitton of knives being held to her spread around like wildfire. Other artists jumped on the trend and now here we are.
Oh. Cool. Thanks!

do you get taxed if you have a debit card?
MIAAt a guess, because it's defining a term. Other genres like Alternative Rock are also in main/. Individual bands go in music/.
